Compete by Vera Nazarian Book Summary

It’s one thing to Qualify…

But do you have what it takes to Compete?

With Earth about to be destroyed by an extinction level asteroid, teenage nerd, geek, and awkward smart girl Gwen Lark, and a few of her friends and loved ones, barely Qualified for rescue onboard one of the thousands of ark-ships headed to the ancient colony planet Atlantis.

Now faced with a year-long journey in space, life in a wondrously alien environment, and many tough life choices, Gwen must decide who or what she will become. Fleet Cadet or Civilian? Friend or lover? Average or extraordinary?

Can she make new friends? Can she trust the old ones, such as Logan Sangre, her sexy high school crush and an Earth special operative?

Time and time again, Gwen’s uncanny ability to come up with the best answer in a crisis saves her life and others. And now, her unique Logos voice makes her an extremely valuable commodity to the Atlanteans—so much so that her enigmatic commanding officer Aeson Kassiopei, who is also the Imperial Prince of Atlantis, has taken an increasingly personal interest in her.

Before the end of the journey, Gwen must convince him that she has what it takes to compete in the deadly Games of the Atlantis Grail.

It’s becoming apparent—the life of her family and all of Earth depends on it.

COMPETE is the second book in The Atlantis Grail series.

Everyone should give 5⭐️. They say that the first book is the best and then second isn't as good. That's for most series. Not for this one. Compete is equally as amazing, exciting, and intense as Qualify. Not only do I think that both books deserve 5 stars but also to be put into theaters. I could definitely see it happening.

A unexpected twist. The book is very exciting and thrilling to read!! Watch out for the end!! You will enjoy the 49 chapter book!!

Not a good read for POC. I remember reading through this series as it was being written, way back to the WattPad days, and really enjoying it! I am very much into dystopian/apocalyptic genre books and enjoyed the general premise of this series. Now that the main Atlantic Grail series is completed, I wanted to read through it again starting from the beginning. Now that I’m older I’m realizing a lot of things that bother me or just make me straight up uncomfortable. One of my biggest qualms is how little Gwen seems to be bother by the amount of death that surrounds her in the books. In the first book, she reflects on the death of her fellow peers in the Finals very briefly, only addressed once more after the fact in a nightmare and then ever mentioned again. The same thing happens in this book (I don’t want to give away too many spoilers) but when something violent and deadly happens around Gwen she is perturbed in the moment and then after the clean up is done she never mentions it again??? There’s not enough lingering trauma for her or any of the characters which is so WEIRD, especially because these are literal children that were talking about. Meanwhile, I’m books like The Hunger Games, the characters that have died in the presence of Katniss Everdeen are honored and brought up throughout the entire series. And I would say that TAG is more graphic/deadly than THG so I’m so confused how the author can spend pages explaining the science and complexities of the technology in the book but doesn’t even discuss all of the trauma that these 12 - 19 year olds have witnessed over the course of like 2 years. Another big qualm I have with this book is how a lot of the people of color are described by the author. You can tell the author is trying to introduce and maintain a very diverse cast of characters but the way she describes them physically and writes their dialogue is so hurtful. I’m a black female and I HATE seeing Laronda be perpetuated as the “sassy black best friend/side kick”. I hate that Dawn is the “super stoic and political Indigenous girl”. I hate that the people of Atlantis are supposed to based on Egyptian culture but a lot of the important figureheads that represent them are white?? I also feel like the characters that get described intricately for their beauty, grace, etc. are never the characters of color. It’s like “oh, I was standing in a room with a black girl as well as a beautifully toned, golden-locked, effortlessly confident Atlantean with a face so striking in beauty that all of the other teens with me couldn’t help but stare and drool”. And it’s like…oh, okay. Also, why is “large and bulky” the only two words that seem to be used to describe Chiyoko anytime she happens to be in the room. The author is very eloquent in her writing and it is very obvious she has done a lot of research to move forward an amazing world and storyline that she has created. But it’s evident that she never thought to research something as simple as what it would look like for someone with relaxed hair to endure this kind of journey. Black women with relaxers need it touched up every 3 months or so to maintain the “straightness” and even then, it needs to be blow dried and straightened for it to actually be straight, otherwise it’s still very kinky in texture. So how is it that after months of training and a year of traveling in space Laronda still has a “short and straight/relaxed bob”? It’s just weird for the author to have done SO much research in one department and yet so little in other things that a very simple, like hair. Even though I adored this series as a young girl, now that I’m an adult I just see way too many problematic things that make it difficult for somebody that isn’t white to be immersed in, despite the author trying to be inclusive.

*jaw drops*. Oh. My. God. I don't know how to say it any other way. I LOVE LOVE LOVED this book!!!! I would legitimately read this over and over. Thank you so much *insert authors name here bc I have forgotten it but I know that it's Vera something* for writing such an amazing book!!!!

Unique, creative, awesome!. The second book in the Atlantis Grail Series, Compete, is amazing! It focuses mostly on character building and description of Atlantis culture. I can not wait until the next book comes out!!

LOVEE ITTT. I absolutely loved this book! The writing style was amazing along with all of the details ugh I cannot WAIT FOR THE THIRD BOOK!!!!! AMazinggggg

Addicting. I got the first book in this series for free, and wasn't sure what to expect once I started reading it. It has a perfect mix of competition and romance. Once I finished reading the first book, I hoped that there was more than just a sequel. So I was relieved to find out that there are 4 books in the series. This second part of the story was beyond addicting. I may have enjoyed it more than the first book, because of how much I had grown to love the characters. Now that I have finished the second book, I am no longer thrilled that there are 4 books in the series because now I have to wait until next year to find out what happens. The second book ends at a major cliff hanger! Read these books! You won't regret it.

Waiting for next in series. "Conflict" is the second in the series, and I loved reading both books. The second book is really a romance, with two people holding in their true feelings about each other in a space ship journey. Nothing steamy or erotic, not even a kiss. But you can feel the electricity between them. The setting is pure science fiction, but it seems so plausible and real. In essence, this is a love story. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series!

Qualify. Ingenious action and unexpectedly cool competitions. You can feel your own muscles ache at the training of the Candidates as well as share the wonder at the imaginative Atlantean tech. Little bit of romance for ones who like that, and the science fiction is intriguing too. I could not stop until I read both books. These would make great movies!

Fantastic. It flows fluidly from the first book to the second, I loved all the twists and turns that happen throughout the book it kept me wanting to read it even when I should've been sleeping. I can not wait for the next two books if they are as good as the first two you won't be disappointed.

Wow!. I could not put this book down! Completely unexpected jaw dropping twist at the end, I'm still recalling from it! I am beyond excited for the next installment! Please don't keep us waiting too long!

Simply wonderful. I fell in love with this series after reading Qualify and I finished Compete in 2 days. I’d say that these books (dare I say it?) even surpass The Hunger Games. I can’t wait to sink into Win, but I have to wait until I have a stretch of time, since I know I won’t set it down til I finish. Bravo

Love!!. Totally obsessed with this book. Impatiently waiting for Win to come out, what a cliffhanger! Just fantastic writing and plot, love the characters so much. If you haven't read the series I would say hold off until the last two are written to forgo the pain of waiting! But just a fabulous series :)

Definitely Read IT!!!!. By far one of the best books I have ever read. It sends you on a wild ride. Definitely a page turner. I read the first book in 2 days and the second in a day and half.

Hooked. This book has pulled me in from start to finish. The emotions of the main character had me feeling them as if I was her instead. If you enjoyed the first book, this one is a must-have read. You will for sure enjoy it from beginning to end.

Wonderful!. This series is both imaginative and brilliantly written. It is complex enough to keep one engrossed, but simple enough to avoid the headache that comes with reading overly detailed science fiction (and fantasy) books. I loved the concept and the imagination that went into making these books come alive. A great read!

Amazing. I love this series. I cannot wait until book 3 is released!

Wow...just wow. Absolutely amazing book...I wish it would never end and the thought of having to wait until February for Win to come out is devastating. I'll be counting the days.

Cinderella in Space. Book 1 (Qualify) was interesting, so I bought book 2 (Compete). It morphed into Cinderella. Don't think I'll bother with Book 3.

Haven’t Read It!!!!. I haven’t read it but I know for a FACT that this book is going to be epic!!!!! I STAN AESON!!!!!

Wow. I love the series thus far and can’t wait for the movie/tv show. The flow and rhythm of the book makes it impossible to put down. Thank you for sharing your talents!

Amazing !!. I can not wait for the 3rd book.. It will keep you off your sit and you will never know what will happen next.. :)

Stunned! Exhilarated! Impatiently waiting for "win". Aghhh! Please don't make us wait too long for the third book in this series You are so awesome Every word is like poetry To come up with a new language, world, everything is no easy task but you make it look goooood girl! Yes! Crushing so hard on Aeson

Compete. Like the first book, imaginative in many ways, with compelling characters. Perhaps a little to much gravitation towards a 'teen girl' audience, but nonetheless entertaining. Hopefully, the next book will evolve, and the excessive use of the word "snort" will dissipate. Needs to borrow less from existing themes, as has the potential for originality.

Good read. After finishing the first book I was really excited for the second book, and it was not a let down! I definitely recommend to any lovers of teenage fiction.😊

Qualify. Was a page turner, from the 1st chapter till the last page.

Compete. What a wonderful work of art! The characters are painted into my mind with the talent of a true artist. I will be watching for the next two novels, waiting impatiently, while I ponder the possibilities that are to come. I'm sure I will re-read the entire series when all the books are released!

Wow #2 !. As I said on book #1’s review, this story is so good. The characters all have their own depth. The love story that the reader can see happening but the characters can’t realize. I’ve cried, I’ve laughed out loud, and I’ve held my breath with stress hoping Gwen finds another solution to whatever problem she has deal with next. I can’t wait to see what happens is book #3

Wow. Just wow!!!!. I have fallen in love with this series. And cannot wait to see what happens in book three. I do like how Gwen grows as the year passes- even while on stage! Complete was a great sequel to Qualify. Usually the second book is not as captivating as the first book- and I cannot even begin to express which is better. All I know is that I have been enjoying re-reading books one and two on repeat for the past month. Can we get another chapter of Win please? Pretty please? With a wee amount of begging on top?

Amazing!. I cannot fathom how amazing this book is! To be honest, I usually don't read these types book, but vera has me hooked to her series. I desperately wait for the 3rd book to arrive, I will read it as soon as it comes, can't wait! If you give this book a chance you will love it, and also thank me later.

Win. I was hooked hooked hooked! Can’t wait to read the next book! The author does a great job of going into detail about the main character, Gwen, emotions’ and how she handles tough situations she is put through. I like that we are constantly looking forward to the next big event to happen and informed about what is happening each step of the way. Super cool futuristic ideas that make Atlantis so very unique. A must read!!!

AMAZING!. This is one of the best series i have ever read!

Speechless..... What can I say other than that I absolutely loved this book!

Weak Characters. Romance is an important part of many book series, and this one is no different. But most books are able to incorporate it somewhat seamlessly, or just focus entirely on it. But when you take a sequel to a book with a strong protagonist and turn them into a pathetic one that swaps between performing incredible feats of ingenuity and some one that drools over half the male characters in the book in some sick love pentagon it doesn’t make any sense. Inconsistent characters, mediocre story, and way too much time describing conspicuous bulges, it was really a let down from the incredible start of the series.

Atlantans book one and two. Best read I have have had for years looking forward to book three . Wen will it be available soon I hope

“The Atlantis Grail, Book 2. Wow thought book one was good, book two even better they really need to make this into a film series, love all the characters, writing keeps you on the edge with wonderful twists, can't wait for book three please hurry!

Now I'm hooked. 2nd book and I already can't wait for the 3rd!!!!! Still as well written as the first book. I can really imagine being there, living through everything myself.

A gripping read. Having enjoyed the first book in this series so much, I immediately bought this second book to find out what happens next! It is just as gripping and beautiful to read as the first, if not more so. I applaud the author and wait in excitement and impatience for the third book next year!

Ease of reading Vera’s Style… by Bruce Grant. I picked up Book 1 and started reading, believing that it might well reveal simple non-complex situations. By the time I had finished Book 1 and now the first 100 pages of Book 2, Vera has captured my interest, not only to impatiently finish the “Atlantis” series, but to look forward to her new books as a favourite author. I also write books and stories. I am and have been an avid Sci-Fi reader for the past 45 years, having ammased an extensive library. Vera’s sense of humour is well-embedded into the text she writes, as well as her sense of adventure! She undstands suspense and how to deliver it!

No more surprised than I.. Being a snob when it comes to books I must say that I always buy a book. Nothing beats the smell and feel of a book. During those times that I am waiting for my core group of authors to churn out their next best I often try out an iBook. Atlantis Grail popped up and needed to waste a few days I thought I would give it a go. Big mistake. Vera Nazabrian has captured my imagine and heart; her first book was wonderfully rich in text and provided the reader with plenty of detail to furnish the imagination. As such I have no choice but to purchase my first ever iBook so I can read the sequel. Very highly recommended by this book worm

Compete. Noooo, you can't end it there, I so need to read the next book. The first two books have been really compelling to read and I am now desperate to read the next one and find out what happens

Can't get enough. This really is a great series. I can't wait for the following books.

Awesome. SO. GOOD.

Loved it!!. OMG!! Best book I have ever read. The first book was just as amazing as the second and I can't wait till the third one comes out. It's killing me not knowing what happens.👍👏💕

Awesome book. Great read

I couldn’t put it down!. It drew me in, well written emotions expressed made my heart race with Gwen and my breathing hitch as though we were one. Just the right amount of descriptive text, with out superfluous fluffing made this a real page turner and kept pulling me back for just one more page.. looking forward to reading the next chapter of their lives on Atlantida

Ok. I feel like this was a filler book. I gave the first one 5 stars but was disappointed reading this.

Amazing. This book is amazing, dynamic and engaging with so many diverse characters. This series has become my new favourite, beating Harry Potter and would highly recommend to everyone.

My new favourite book. 100% would recommend, the best book I have read in ages. If you liked "red rising" or "the hunger games" you'll love this.

So good. Really amazing, can't wait for more 😊✨

Perfect. This series is so good! The idea is so original, the characters are the kind you love with all of your heart, the action leaves you on the edge of your seat and it has the tiniest bit of romance, not so that the plot seems useless but enough to satisfy the fairytale kind of ending.

more, i want more!!!. PLEASE give me the third book already im in agony! i honestly can't wait to see how this series ends, ahhhh~ highly recommend this book especially if you've read 'Qualify' because gurl. my ship needs to sail! 😍

Compete. Excellent series so far. Loved it. Couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next book.

I can't even.. I can't. I just can't. This is the best book I have read all my life, this is the book that has you in an obsessed trans throughout the entire book each page makes you want to scream and laugh and just DIE it is so good I can't even, I am not a fan girl but now I am a fan girl about this book and I will be waiting each day for book three!! Aaaaaaaaarhh! This is the best book you will ever read in your life!!

Excellent series. Fans of the hunger games or divergent should check out these books. Excellent dystopian world with creative challenges for our heroes. Learning to work together and find ways to use their unique abilities.

Hooked!. Dying for book 3 & 4!!! My husband keeps hearing..."this should be a Movie!" It's THAT fantastic!!!!

short, but good. much faster paced than the first book. still great, i just would've liked to see more focus on life on the arc, and less on the dances lol.

Awesome!!!. Loved this series! Great main character and side characters. Plot kept you enthralled through out and her writing just made the story come to life! Very exciting story with action and romantic tension to last you till the next book in the series comes out! (I've read them at least twice already)

Amazing!! Love Love Love This Series. Only bad thing is I'm too impatient for book 3!!! I loved this concept, couldn't put it down. Thank you to the author for bringing a fresh take on the end of the world ;)

Compete. Held me spell bound and could not wait to read what happened next. My only problem is now I have to wait for the next book in the series . Would recommend this author to anyone who loves this form of writing and story structure. While there are somethings that become a predictable process there are many more that take you off guard at unexpected points in the book. I would say it is safe to say I will read this set of books again especially while waiting for the next instalment.
