First Comes Love by Emily Giffin Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A pair of sisters find themselves at a crossroads in this dazzling new novel from the author of Something Borrowed, Where We Belong, and The One & Only. First Comes Love is a story about family, friendship, and the courage to follow your own heart—wherever that may lead.

Growing up, Josie and Meredith Garland shared a loving, if sometimes contentious, relationship. Josie was impulsive, spirited, and outgoing, Meredith hardworking, thoughtful, and reserved. When tragedy strikes, their delicate bond splinters.

Fifteen years later, Josie and Meredith are in their late thirties, following very different paths. Josie, a first grade teacher, is single—and this close to swearing off dating for good. What she wants more than the right guy, however, is to become a mother—a feeling that is heightened when her ex-boyfriend’s daughter is assigned to her class. Determined to have the future she’s always wanted, Josie decides to take matters into her own hands.

On the outside, Meredith is the model daughter with the perfect life. A successful attorney, she’s married to a wonderful man, and together they’re raising a beautiful four-year-old daughter. Yet lately Meredith feels dissatisfied and restless, secretly wondering if she chose the life that was expected of her rather than the one she truly desired.

As the anniversary of their tragedy looms, and painful secrets from the past begin to surface, Josie and Meredith must not only confront the issues that divide them but also come to terms with their own choices. In their journey toward understanding and forgiveness, both sisters discover that they need each other more than they knew—and that in the search for true happiness, love always comes first.

...and then comes marriage....and then. [ I received this book last summer as part of a Read It Forward giveaway promotion from Ballantine Books, and am way behind in this read/review which I do voluntarily. How I received it has no influence on what I have written] "Grief is a mystery to be lived through, not a problem to be solved" Two sisters, Josephine and Meredith live in Atlanta where they grew up. Everything was so good until their brother Daniel is killed on his birthday in a car accident. It becomes a tragically defining moment, changing absolutely everything in the family as they all drift apart. Josie becomes a primary schoolteacher, Meredith a lawyer and after divorcing, Mom becomes a real estate agent and Dad goes deeper into alcoholism. Everybody loses. Maybe not loses. Maybe just live up to different expectations. They each mourn in their own ways, some good, some not so much. But their choices have brought others into their lives: husband, children, different couplings along the way, for better and for worse. Meredith comes to crossroads in her marriage. Josie makes decisions and finally follows through with them. The dance of maturity brings pain and joy as they deal with not being stuck. This book has begun its second big push as it goes into paperback and I really don't want to give any more of the plot away. I felt this, my first Griffin book, was a very satisfyingly read that kept me wondering what might happen next. It also felt real, it really could, or maybe even has happened. This will not be my last book by this author. Four 1/2 stars

Wishfully hoping it was as good as other Griffin books. Normally, Griffin writes with twists and turns that make you wanting more and keep you reading." First Comes Love" was a fine read just not the normal heart bumping drama that come from her other girly reads. Still a fan of Griffin and will continue reading her work.

Not a satisfying ending. I enjoyed this book and learning about the main characters (although I had a hard time with Josie - she drove me crazy) but the ending left too many questions unanswered. I'm okay with a few aspects of an ending being left to the imagination but the ending to this was abrupt and had a lot of loose ends.

Love this author, but didn't like these characters. I buy Emily Giffin books even before I know the subject because she is a wonderful writer and her characters are well drawn. I usually finish her books in 2-3 days. It took me 3 weeks to read this book because I found the characters to be totally unlikable. Although I sympathize with the loss of a sibling, the selfish, finger-pointing characters didn't make me enthusiastic to find out how their story would end. Still an Emily Giffin fan!

Awful. Waste of time and money.

Amazing. This book was more than good! I love Emily, I have read all her books! I hope there is a squeal to this one ! Would love to know what happens with Josie, Gabe, Meredith, Nolan and Pete!!! Xoxo

Simply bummed.... Emily Griffin is one of my favorite authors but this book missed the boat. Not an enjoyable read at all. Characters were unlikeable. The story dragged with no real high points. And the ending was terrible. Just a bummed out reading experience.

Schmaltzy but intimate. Not sure I would like this from the sample but this book unraveled in an interesting and unique way and was a compelling read in the end. I liked the writing style which emphasized the dichotomy of two sisters’ challenging relationship .

First comes love. Really? Spoilers!!! I hated the ending. The writing was great as always, you feel like you're right there. Story moves along at a nice clip but really? No epilogue? No did they stay together , did Gabe love Josie? What was the baby, a boy or girl? Ugh I like a tidy ending, a satisfying one. Maybe it's just me. But I want answers- not cliff hangers.

2.5 stars. Big fan of Emily's writing but really not her best work. Characters were unlikeable. Ending left you unsatisfied, but also not wanting more. Relationships were underdeveloped. Hope her next is better!

Disappointing. I have read all of Emily Giffin and was very disappointed with this book. To begin, none of the characters are likeable. All her past books had great characters. The plot is really boring, nothing is really resolved at the end of the book. Don' waste you money on this book!!

Relationships. This novel showcases so many relationships that a person goes through or has seen with friends and family. Emily Giffin does it again, a great novel!

Don't wast your time. Boring. Pointless. Characters that are completely unrelated le. Such a waste I can't believe I even held on to the end.

Unlikeable characters; unresolved ending. I found these characters shallow and unlikeable. I liked Emily Giffen's early books, but I've found that as time goes on they all just read similarly - upper middle class white ladies who create their own crises due to their lack of self awareness and general lack of life experience outside of sorority to mommy hood. I can't relate to these people in any way. This particular book also has a sort of unresolved ending, but there was a lack of story to begin with so I suppose it makes sense that the ending was flat. Not my favorite book

So disappointed. I am a huge Emily Giffin fan and was so excited that she had a new book coming out. Unfortunately, this book was so boring and pointless. It was so hard to get through, and still, so many questions at the end.

First Comes Love. Most of Griffin's books are fun and funny! This one was dark and I have enough to family drama to deal with to pay money to read about it. So disappointed. Don't waste your $ unless you need a good dose of depression.

Love Giffin.... But. Hate to say it... But this was just awful... Long and tedious story with no "punchline" whatsoever to create interest..... Characters were unlikeable and storyline just weird. Virtually no ending... Just stopped.

Not your best, Emily!. It was, at times, a page turner, I'll give her that. But, there is so much back and forth, and some things dragged on when she could have dedicated more time to other characters, situations, histories and/or a better ending. I'm a huge fan of hers, but this book seems like it was made because she was under contract and had writers block or something.

Great emotional read. Great story about a complicated sibling relationship and how a family tragedy affects their lives. I loved the characters, especially Gabe! The ambiguity of the relationships made the story feel more relatable and real. The dialogue was so great and I laughed out loud quite a few times. I recommend it.

First Comes Love. Great story about siblings similar to my daughters. At the moment they are at odds , but I pray that love wins out in the end .

Enjoyable.. I love all her books and this one did not disappoint.

If I could give less I would!!. What was I thinking, buying this? The worst compilation, of whiny, self-centered writing I've read- I could not even finish it. The characters are shallow, one dimensional and down right boring. They complain about everything and there is no story line. If you are into white supremacy, and first world problems, this is your book. Yes- I am also wondering how this ended up on my reading list. Oh by the way the way she devalues rescue dogs is despicable.

Time wasted. Waste of your money and time. Pointless Senseless and leaves you hanging...

Must read!!. Touching story about family and the sometimes difficult sisterly bond.

First Comes Love. I have read all of Emily Giffin's novels and this is the first one that I have been a bit disappointed with. This novel did not captivate my attention and desire to continue reading like the other novels did. I would not discourage anybody from reading this novel, but do not hold it to the same expectation that you may have received from the other novels that she has written.

Good, quick read. Kept my attention. Didn't care for Meredith's character but I guess it's part of the story. Ending could've been better but overall kept me turning the pages and feeling for the characters.

First comes love. I couldn't wait until this book came out because I am such a fan but I was horribly disappointed in this book. I feel like there was no point to the story. I absolutely loathed the sister Meredith and just really did not like Josie either. I feel like a wasted my money and more importantly my time. I will wait until other reviews come in next time before I purchase another one of her books.

Love Comes First. Boring. Just boring. Don't waste your money.

Sad. It felt like the book was slow and then ended abruptly with a lot of questions left to be answered.

I love this book!. I just love the way she writes her books and makes the reader fall in love with the characters and the story. Every time I read one of her books, I can not put it down. What a great book! What a great tragic, inspiring story about loss, love, family and individuality. A++
