Before the Fall by Noah Hawley Book Summary

On a foggy summer night, eleven people--ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter--depart Martha's Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are the painter Scott Burroughs and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul's family.

Was it by chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something more sinister at work? A storm of media attention brings Scott fame that quickly morphs into notoriety and accusations, and he scrambles to salvage truth from the wreckage. Amid trauma and chaos, the fragile relationship between Scott and the young boy grows and glows at the heart of this stunning novel, raising questions of fate, morality, and the inextricable ties that bind us together.

Kristin Hannah raves, "Noah Hawley really knows how to keep a reader turning the pages... a complex, compulsively readable thrill ride of a novel."

Winner of the 2017 Edgar Award for Best Novel and the 2017 International Thriller Writers Award For Best Novel

Drawn out, yet good read!. This is the first book I've read by this author and I thought it was good. A lot of passages got too wordy and philosophical for my taste for this type of fiction, and parts of the storyline would go on and on, metaphor after metaphor, to set the emotional stage, it seemed. I found those parts to be descriptive overkill, so I just scanned and skipped through them without missing anything important. The author revealed the story and characters through the perspective of each person involved, jumping around in time, past to present, from one person to the next. I don't mind that as a storytelling style, and I stayed on track with the storyline for the most part, only occasionally getting lost. If you don't care for that style, though, you may not enjoy this. Otherwise it was a good story, keeping the reader engaged while getting you thinking about the human condition, cause, effect and coincidence.

Before the fall. Very average. Great start, good middle innings, then a stumble to the finish. No feeling for main characters or story. Weak.

Before the Fall. Excellent! A sad but true perspective on the media and how the truth is irrelevant. Great story and a realistic ending.

Before the fall. Overwrought. Story line was not well developed.

Before the Fall. Pretty disappointing. You lost my vote.

Before the fall. Worst. Book. Ever.

I don't read a lot, but this book was worth it.. What a well written book. From the beginning I was intrigued. I am not a big reader, and it takes me a lot to finish a book, most of the time I start and stop a couple chapters in. This book had me interested throughout the entirety of it. I will definitely read another one of the authors books.

Hated it…... Made it all the way to the end and thought “what”?? Why did I waste my time? I really hated this book. Unrealistic characters and the main character is not likeable. Story lines that didn’t make sense. A jummble of unrealistic plots that end with a thud. Don’t waste your time.

Disappointing. The first 80% of the book was very good. The ending completely ruined it. The author spun an intriguing tale that implied so much more, then all of a sudden the reader is hit over the head with a bland and undeserved ending leaving all the intrigue behind. This is by no means a "suspenseful thriller."

Good book, stupid ending. Enjoyed the writing and the book overall, but the ending was terrible.

Don't bother. After reading the glowing reviews for "After the Fall" I couldn't wait to start reading it. I am not a fan of alternating chapters especially with so many different characters. I find it a cheap trick an author uses to maintain interest and build suspense where there isn't any. The cast of characters were paper board cutout caricatures . The loving but neglected wife, the uber rich husband who takes his family for granted, the evil banker, his loving but naive wife, the adorable children, the single good looking man with a troubled past, the young unhappily wife who needs rescuing. They are all there following a predictable path. Please! And the climax. Huh? I did not realize the book had ended until I turned the final page and that was it. Another monotonous feature is having every single character run an interior monologue. Every character sounded the same. No different voice among them. This book was nothing more than an opportunity for the author to babble on about existentialism.

Page turner!!. I was hooked in the first chapter. Very well written!

Will it ever end.. The sample caught me. It was good. Then it went downhill. This book was heavy with detail. Does the reader really need all this information about the supporting characters. Hardly worth 13.99

Great read!. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Forgot to write ending. I was intrigued by this book. I enjoyed it until the last chapter. There was no closure to this story. Left me shaking my head- like he forget to finish the story...weird!

Before the Fall. The author is extremely verbose. Chapters rambled with useless background of characters and occurrences which have little or nothing to do with the main story line. While the general story line is in tact, the extra few hundred pages of verbosity makes for a read that constantly calls for "the light at the end of the tunnel." There is no real mystery or suspense in the book, just a story about tragic occurrence and the boring lives of the people involved.

Before the fall. A very good read, lots of build up, and tension. But the end is a let down as it is too simple for the story. Before The Fall left me wanting to know more about the lives of all who died. Too bad it had a trite ending.

Juvenile and anticlimactic. I have to think that the positive reviews for this book were mostly paid or in exchange for a free product. It really is that bad. The author clearly represents himself through the main character, who has little to no impact on the plot in the end. He just rambles through the story aimlessly, becoming increasingly more unlikable until you really can’t stand to hear what he has to say anymore. After finally deciding to give up and just skim my way through the last 50 pages or so, I have to laugh because the ending has nothing to do with the buildup, but at the same time, it’s also not a twist or a surprise. In that, the book is truly original. I feel like I’ve just read someone’s journal of miscellaneous, unedited ponderings and high school-level “story” ideas. I’m not usually so mean, but I feel insulted that I was lead to believe this would be a good read and wasted my money and time on it, and that apparently ratings can’t be trusted at all anymore.

Simply BORING AND TRITE. Misogynistic and anti conservative. Flash backs merely used because the author could not tie characters to the plot. Pure rubbish. Forced myself to finish it but will never read another piece written by this unimaginative author who needs to pluck his stories from true tragedies.

Couldn’t put it down. Got this recommendation from the ladies of My Favorite Murder podcast. They were right- page turner, phenomenal writing and interesting story line that makes you think about life and the sequence of events. The ending was a twist and I was a little let down, however, I ended satisfied and glad the mystery was solved!

What a pleasant surprise. I have always had my favorite authors and it's not often that I try someone new, even though I read 5 books a week on average. What a pleasant surprise!! I love the writing style of the author. I found it most difficult to put this book down. I will definitely be following up on his other books. Thank you so much for a wonderful read.

Totally Over-rated!. OK, I got through about 50 pages before saying “I just don’t care…” Sloppy prose, not really believable dialogue…I honestly don’t get all the rave reviews…even as an easy summer read, it just didn’t hold my interest...

Suspense at its best. This is a great story, not to be missed by those who love a mystery and try to solve it before the reveal!

Great Book!. Intense, suspenseful, creative, satisfying thriller. Couldn’t put it down!

Before the Fall. Terrible cheesy ending...I am sorry I bought this book! Two stars for one character in the book.

Ended Too Soon. I loved the twist, turns, and thrills. But the story ended with a lot of loose ends the reader deserved to see tied up. Of course we can assume what the future holds but a little justice would have been nice to see.

Before the Fall. Well written, fast paced, fun read!!!

Generally good, but begged for a seasoned copy editor.. Many annoying and distracting errors that should have been caught in the editing process. i.e. A funeral takes place in a Jewish cemetery (Mount Zion), complete with a rabbi presiding, as the reader is instructed to notice the many statues of the Madonna, as well as a large Friar wielding a cross, all occupying the same space. Just a lot of small errors of characters contradicting themselves or behaving in ways that seemed arbitrary. I found myself paging back too many times to see if I might have misread, only to find otherwise. Other times I felt, as many others have noted, that the author fell in love with the sound of own voice (metaphorically speaking), writing ponderous descriptions of relatively minor subjects or scenes. This is a very good book. It could have easily have been a great one.

Well written, but.... The book was well written. The author constructed some great ideas that brought situations to life. However, most of the book was unnecessary and boring. The mystery dragged with very little payoff. Too many characters as well.

Awesome. I bought this book because it sounded like an interesting story. I thought it would be the typical plan crash book where it talks about all the people were suriving for weeks in the ocean, blah, blah, blah. But to my surprise the book focuses on the characters before and after the fall not really on the accident itself. The ending will blow your mind. Couldn’t put it down and would highy recommend!!

Before The Fall. Not what you I've come to expect from an Edgar winner. It lacked originality, suspense, and plot twists. Disappointed.

An incredible read. I have never read a book by this author, but Noah Hawley’s writing had me mesmerized. Yes, it’s a “who-done-it,” along with a “how” and “why” but it’s also a fascinating exploration of how different people react to heroism and jealousy. I can’t wait to read another book by Hawley.

Poor editing, predictable, ho-hum sort of book.. Reading this book while vacationing in Montauk, NY made this book quite problematic for me. So many basic facts are wrong, inconsistent with reality and make a reader wonder if the author even bothered to go to Montauk before choosing this location. How can significant events take place in a remote trendy resort town that has in reality no hospital and no places even remotely resembling places in the story line's past or current time lines. I found many of the characters quite unbelievable and contrived. Honestly felt that this was a poorly written work by an author who can do better. Perhaps the fact that I'd just read The Underground Railroad and the new Harry Potter play made this novel even worse. This is a mediocre effort that I found a complete waste of time.

Absolutely Riveting. Couldn't have hoped for a more satisfying read. Five stars.

WOW, EXCITING SAMPLE.... ....and a lot of really interesting reading. And then, filler, filler, filler. Skip, read...filler, filler, skip, skip, skip...well, you get the picture. The premise of the book was really interesting and a lot of the back stories were engaging, but the book would've been half as long if the unnecessary descriptive fillers had been omitted. Of course, if I set out to write a book, it would end up being a short story so if you run across one by me, look me up and I'll give you 5 bucks😉

A bit too mysogynistic. Overall this was a good read, following the main survivor of the plane crash. Written with unfolding tales of passengers and crew. However, can't give it more than 3 stars because I found the sexual commentary and some of the characterizations way too mysogynistic. Even if some of the male characters were mysogynists, the rough commentary did not add anything to the story and was extremely distracting. The quick wrap up at the end also took a bit away from the investment in the story but did not bother me overall. Just be prepared for a lot of completely unnecessary mysogynistic sexual comments by characters.

Boring snippets. A whole book of boring snippets around a plane crash. Really awful and a waste of time and money.

Favorites. Noah Hawley is one of my favorites: suspense, a deep understanding of human foibles, and plenty of action.

Do Not Waste Your Time. Read all the bad reviews. They describe it quite well. Wordy, superficial, slow and unbelieveable. Unfortunately, I did not read them before I bought it.

Before The Fall. This was a book in the book club I belong to. I read it for that. I didn’t enjoy it at all! Way too many words and not enough substance. It took forever to find out what was going on.

Good storyline. It was a compelling story but the writer is at times hard to follow. His characters all spoke in fragmented thoughts and sentences. ALL the time. It became a distraction for me.

Worse book. A waste of my time and money. Don't bother!

Zzzzz. Worst book I’ve ever read. Extremely weak storyline, too many useless words, details, and descriptions of characters that were not relevant to the story. Terrible ending. I FORCED myself to finish the book simply to finish the book.

Wasted time. Too long-winded, boring actually.

Fun Read. Hard to stop reading…compelling plot that mixes enough real life events into the story to make it seemed real. So glad that the hero continues to be hero as new challenges are put in front of him.

Loved it, read it. I recognized the strong writing in this book immediately. From the very first page you're pulled into this cast of characters who just live in your brain until its end. I specifically liked how we were introduced to the catastrophic event before we knew the characters. Most writers would have adopted the opposite flow but because Hawley's choice in my opinion really made the book more interesting. I never guessed "who did it" even though there were a limited amount of characters to choose from. I now want to read all of Noah Hawley's novels. Thank you for the entertainment Mr. Hawley!

Strong start, then dies a slow boring death.... Enjoyed the beginning fine, but the middle was absolutely mind numbingly boring... chapter after chapter of irrelevant insight, background and musings with as much appeal as reading the phone book... maybe it finishes with a bang, but I'll never know, because I simply couldn't finish it... and, importantly, I couldnt care less... because the characters were boring.

Loved the book! ...right up until the last couple of pages..... Great story. Very well written. I really liked the structure of the book too: intertwining current events and past events. I was emotionally invested in the main character. If you want a well-written whodunnit with social commentary on our current news/media then this is for you. My only gripe is that the end felt unrealistic to me and not up to the standard of the rest of the book. It also feels like the end is rushed and incomplete. But read the book anyway. It's a smart page-turner.

Very enjoyable. Well written. Good story. Enjoyable to read. I recommend it. Great characters.

Nice Read. I would’ve given 5 stars if the ending was better. It just kinda ended. Great character development!

Before the Fall. I liked this book quite a bit. Great characters. Thought provoking story. Middle slows just a bit but not too badly. Noah Hawley is a compelling story teller.
