Night School by Lee Child Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The incomparable hero of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back takes readers to school in his most explosive novel yet. After eleven straight global #1 bestsellers, discover the thrillers that The New York Times calls “utterly addictive.”

It’s 1996, and Reacher is still in the army. In the morning they give him a medal, and in the afternoon they send him back to school. That night he’s off the grid. Out of sight, out of mind.

Two other men are in the classroom—an FBI agent and a CIA analyst. Each is a first-rate operator, each is fresh off a big win, and each is wondering what the hell they are doing there.

Then they find out: A Jihadist sleeper cell in Hamburg, Germany, has received an unexpected visitor—a Saudi courier, seeking safe haven while waiting to rendezvous with persons unknown. A CIA asset, undercover inside the cell, has overheard the courier whisper a chilling message: “The American wants a hundred million dollars.”

For what? And who from? Reacher and his two new friends are told to find the American. Reacher recruits the best soldier he has ever worked with: Sergeant Frances Neagley. Their mission heats up in more ways than one, while always keeping their eyes on the prize: If they don’t get their man, the world will suffer an epic act of terrorism.

From Langley to Hamburg, Jalalabad to Kiev, Night School moves like a bullet through a treacherous landscape of double crosses, faked identities, and new and terrible enemies, as Reacher maneuvers inside the game and outside the law.

Praise for Night School

“The prose is crisp and clean, and the fighting is realistic. . . . This latest installment has all the classic ingredients: a great setting (Hamburg), a good villain, and a mystery that draws you in efficiently, escalates unpredictably, and has a satisfying resolution.”—The New Yorker

“As gripping as ever.”—The Florida Times-Union

Night School. Not bad, a prequel, as I guess the sequel game has run its course? But back to basics is nice!

Riveting. Very riveting and well written.

A Passing grade at Night School.. Not one of my favorites in the series. The story had some good moments, the ancillary characters shallow and predictable. And yet Reacher and Neagly shine. The bar has been set high in this series and overall Child's meets it, though some of it derivative. A worthy effort.

Night school. Sort of an homage to Len Deighton, loved it!

Slow story. I kept waiting for the typically fast paced, high energy excitement I've grown to enjoy in the Jack Reacher story series. Well, even Babe Ruth struck out some time. This book was worth reading but don't expect it to be up to the same standards we readers have grown to love and enjoy. It's still well written and the dialogue and romance are there. It's just, well, slow paced. Maybe next time...

Not bad. Reacher doesn’t have clear directions because he is not alone. Working with a team limits the action. But I enjoyed the journey. Thanks.

Horrible. I have read all of the Reacher books, and this one was so far different than the others, it seems it was written by someone else. It was boring, repetitive and downright awful. I'm a voracious reader, but no more Reacher. I'll stick with Lucas Davenport!

A Reacher Fan! I loved this book!. Great story telling by master. Lee Child has once again penned a real page turner!

Reacher. Good book though not as good as some of the Reacher books to me

This book was boring. I really like reacher books but this one is drawn out and boring I like when they're more action-packed and unrealistic. I say read it if you have nothing else to read.

Another Back Story. We go back in time. I do not keep up with the official “Reacher Timeline” but this takes place prior to him leaving the Army. I liked the story. The intimacy scenes are “new” as in Child does not write them this way previously. Kinda scary this could have happened. All due to a clerical error.

Night School. Reacher is the Man. Smart, tough and calculating. He uses the above in his deduction of the problem and he gets positive solutions.

Night School. As always, a great Jack Reacher book.

WOW!. What can I say? Just finished reading Night School and Lee did it again- cleverly written, every detail perfect, enthralling, impossible to put down. Can't wait for the next one!

Good for insomnia. I love Jack Reacher books, having read most of them. This one, however, just drags on and on. The story is weak and all the over-written descriptions are maddening.

Night school. Terrible book, boring, all kinds of names to remember bad story line

Not the best of the Reacher books. Too much detail and hard to imagine the descriptions of the surrounding areas described. Also, the gratuitous sex with beastiality was so unlike Reacher books and totally unnecessary. It added nothing to the plot. Very disappointing of the authors.

WT??. Reacher left the army in 1996. This book was very un-Reacher like. Slow and boring. Skip this book, and read John Puller instead.

NIGHT SCHOOL. Certainly not his best work. The plot is slow and difficult to believe.

Weak. Way too eager to create situations where Reacher can be Reacher with too little time spent on plausibility.

Gone Hollywood. I have read every Reacher book but this will probably be my last. The perverted, explicit sex was so unnecessary and gratuitous that it was sickening. If he is writing for future screenplays he really needs to stop. The book actually managed to make Recher look bumbling. I can't believe this is the same author. Perhaps he should stop trying to pump one out every year and give more thought to the plot and not try to fill in with sex.

Lame. It seems that Lee Child has run out of gas… This book lacked everything.

Child is obviously out of ideas. Unlike all the other Reacher books - which I thoroughly enjoyed and read multiple times - I couldn't wait to finish this one so I could move on to a book that was actually entertaining. I kept thinking it would get better but I was wrong. The writing was muddled and directionless. The plot boring. The action so typical of the prior books was simply missing. I think Child is tired of Reacher and his writing in Night School definitely reflects it. If you really want to read this one, wait until the price is half of what it was when released and you will still be doing yourself a disservice by buying it. I gave it two stars because I was able to finish it but otherwise would have given it only one.

Boring. I've read all the Reacher books and this one is so boring and unlike any other of Child's Reacher series that it makes me wonder if someone ghost wrote this boring piece. If you like Reacher don't waste your time with this one.

Night school. Not up to club standards. Boring with a capital “B”. Struggled through first half and gave up. Waist of $$.

BEST REACHER BOOK YET!. I thoroughly enjoyed “Night School”! Didn’t want to stop reading it. I’ve read all the Reacher books and I think this one is the best!

Okay. Ok

Has Reacher gone Hollywood?. I was captivated by 61 Hours several years ago; quick result- I caught up quickly. "MakeMe" left a nasty taste in my mouth...good book, less the final reveal. Night School seemed soulless. Sorry, Mr. Child. Just wondering where the animal instinct went~ certainly not on to your editor. As I am certain the author has more to say, I'll keep reading. Hopeful as always- Hannah K.

Night School. Far from Childs best Reacher escapades. Somewhat difficult to hold my interest JHansen

Disappointed. This was the most boring Reacher book I've ever read, and I've read them all. I didn't get the sense that this was Jack Reacher at all. I feel it was written with Tom Cruise in mind. Not a good thing.

Night School. I absolutely love Lee Child's Jack Reacher character and his books!! I have read everyone of them!! I am a huge fan but was SO disappointed when they cast someone as small as Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher! What happened to 6 foot 5 inches of pure muscle!! Just saying............

Maybe the best ever. Loved this one. Reacher as a younger man, still in the Army, was great.

Night School. Terrific story

ZZZZZZ!. I'm listening to this book on tape and I'm bored beyond all reason. I can't even follow this ridiculous plot. It is a snoozer for sure. I was a Lee Child/Jack Reacher fan, read every book until the last 3 books. Seems like Jack Reacher got swallowed up by Tom Cruise and will never return. So sad.

Series needs to end. This was by far the least action ever in a Jack Reacher book. Calling it a thriller is a stretch. I finished it only out of respect for previous good books. In the end it continued to disappoint. Too bad.

Didn’t read yet. My friend is obsessed can’t wait to read it...

Night School. Boring, zero action. One of the worst books I have read. What has happened to Jack Reacher? Or more importantly Lee Childs??

Jacks back. Typical Jack Reacher. Sittin alone drinking coffee one minute and up to his eyebrows in beautiful women and bad guys. Sometimes a guy just can’t catch a break.

Night School was not the best. I love the Reacher stories but this one was long on detail and short on drama. It seemed to drag on and generally I couldn’t wait to put it down and go to sleep. The concluding chapters were fun but the lead up to it was sluggish.

Very disappointed again. So... This and also the last book both left me disappointed in the efforts of Mr. Child. If I could have returned this book for a refund, I would have done so. I am officially done with Jack Reacher as this is definitely not the same caliber of writing that I used to be a fan of from the author.

No depth.. While the plot is interesting, Child just seems to plod along, exchanging depth for progression. At way less than 400 pages, why not develop the characters? Stripped of personal depth, his characters are just that: characters that only serve the plot. At times I kept asking, "Is he even trying?"

I figured it out.. Since I am of a later version of that era, I figured out what the “Treasure” was about 60% thru the book. The scary part is, it was a very realistic possibility for this to happen. Happy for the bullet to the head. Maybe this needs to happen in todays world. Too many people wanting power. Thank you Lee.

Night School. Better than last year's lame offering, but still weak compared to all that built the brand in the early years. Great thrillers build tension; this one doesn't. The antagonists are too thinly sketched to really despise. The trio of 'cooperatives' barely talk, so why use that as a foundation? The twists and turns as the sketch evolves are interesting. The final act is weak. Oh, and pistol cartridges don't shoot holes in things when they 'cook' off; there is no controlled pressure to send them on a high velocity trajectory. That may seem petty, but Lee Childs is known for well researched detail. A lack of believability in a key scene has no place in his work. And what's with the America is better/smarter than Germany vein? Maybe next year will start to sing again.

Reacher is no more. The Reacher I've used to enjoy in earlier novels is no where to be found, having read every reacher novel, I can safely say that the last two novels were a waste of time and money, I think Lee Child is milking the reacher "brand" and stopped putting the effort he used to exert in previous books. What a shame!

I always wanted to read this book!. I’m glad I finally took the plunge!

Great book. Not his best...but still worth it

Disappointed. The overall story was good. However, as other disillusioned readers have pointed out, there were horrendous, vulgar scenes that were completely unnecessary. The nightclub descriptions were reprehensible. They added less than nothing to the story and were the most off-putting things I have ever read in any book. I have recently begun making my way through the entire Reacher series. I am grossly disappointed by these scenes. I hope this is a singular incident. The Reacher books I had read to this point all had the same formula where Reacher slept with a new female character he just met while saving the world in his unbeatable way. There have always been mercifully bare details about this part of the books’ formulas. This particular book took the frequency and descriptions entirely too far. These are supposed to be action books, not porn.

Not good. I am surprised at how bad this book was. I have read all the Reacher novels and used to love them. This book makes me want to stop reading Lee Child all together.

Night school. Very good

Ok. Big fan of the Reacher series. This was a good read but just ok.

Night school. Lee Child has met all expectations with this book, keep up the good work Lee I look forward to your next novel in this series

Intriguing premise. Working my way through the series and this was as distracting and as light a reading as the last dozen. Continuity issue re Neagley but that's just nitpicking :) The usual pithy jabs at things deserving jabbing. :) Enjoy!

Night School. Becoming increasingly formulaic but Reacher still worthwhile.

Was this written by Lee Childs?. Ok, so it wasn't exactly a train wreck but I had to go back and look at the cover a few times to see if Lee Child actually wrote this. I've read every Reacher book in the series and I have to say, this one lacks the same high quality work. For example, a healthy sex life is ok, but this time it went a little over the top. A couple of X rated scenes so be careful not to leave it on your chair with the kids around. Long stretches of dialogue punctuated by a couple of fist and fire fights. I gotta say, I was glad when I got to the end.

A good read.. Enjoyed this book along with all of Child's previous books. What I missed a bit was Reachers usual physical pounding of the bad guys. There were one or two weak moments in an otherwise great story line. For example after finding Wiley's apartment with his possessions and a statement that he had not yet left town, no one was smart enough to say "let's leave someone here should Wiley return," which he did. Someone should have picked this out and reworded that scene. Also no need for Jack to have sex. Doesn't work into the story or ad to the story in fact it detracts from the story. This is an action adventure story not a love story. Child did a great job of coming up with a plausible reason for what's worth a $100 million. I know I was hard pressed to come up with what it might be. Would highly recommend this book to all Reacher fans and all who want an entertaining read. Thanks again Lee Child.

Early Reacher - great writing. Ah, such a nice read. Jack is back or actually it is early Reacher, before Jack's main adventures. And one of Lee Child's better written books about Reacher and I've read them all. Now what do I do till the next one comes around in a year or so.
