CHAOS

From the Ancient Greek (χάος or kháos)

A vast chasm or void. Anarchy. The science of unpredictability.

On a late summer evening in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dr. Kay Scarpetta and her investigative partner, Pete Marino, respond to a call about a dead bicyclist near the Kennedy School of Government. It appears that a young woman has been attacked with almost superhuman force.

Even before Scarpetta’s headquarters has been officially notified about the case, Marino and Scarpetta’s FBI agent husband, Benton Wesley, receive suspicious calls, allegedly from someone at Interpol. But it makes no sense. Why would the elite international police agency know about the case or be interested? It soon becomes apparent that an onslaught of harassment might be the work of an anonymous cyberbully named Tailend Charlie, who has been sending cryptic communications to Scarpetta for over a week.

Even Lucy, her brilliant tech-savvy niece, can’t trace who it is or how this person could have access to intimate information. When a second death shocks Scarpetta to her core, it becomes apparent she and those close to her are confronted with something far bigger and more dangerous than they’d ever imagined.

Chaos. Liz32905. Always the best read.one of my top ten favorite authors! Always hungry for more.

Disappointing. Most of the book felt like it was laying groundwork for the drama to begin-and then it was over.

Read!. Really good one!

Chaos. To much non-important information. Just not up to the Scarpeta standard. Almost like just filling up pages with stuff. Very disappointed with this book

Very Disappointing. This book felt rushed, as if she put it out just for the sake of selling another Scarpetta book. I usually love these books, and this one centered around a single day with no character development or suspense. The final takedown of Carrie Gretchen was written in 3 pages. This is the first time I ever felt cheated by a story.

Chaos. It was good

The worst. My first book review: I gave up and quit reading just past page 200.

Chaos. Impossible to read Goes nowhere....very slowly A waste of time Could not even get halfway .can I get my money back

Too wordy. Lost interest…

Chaos. I usually really enjoy Patricia Cornwall, but I feel like she phoned this one in. Disappointed.

Slow, but I couldn't put it down. While I love Carrie Grethen as the villain, I would love it if at some point Lucy and she duke it out. I man like world war 3 and one of them finally dies. This book was good, but predictable and maybe a bit of a stretch. Ending was pretty cool. Temple Gault lives on!!

Chaos. What a waste of money! Ms. Cornwell spent almost the entire book describing the difficulty in securing the scene! And I got that Boston is hot and humid! Also, PC might want to find another villain - Carrie is so overused. I will not spend a dime if she is featured in the next Scarpetta novel. Actually, think I may skip the next one, as the author just rehashes old story lines - ad nauseam.

Chaos. I gave up on PC three books ago though I read one or two of them. Not even going to buy this one since reading reviews. Her books spin their wheels, belaboring old stale unresolved issues that I am weary of. KS is neurotically flawed and reading her emotional paralysis again is more than I can do. She frustrates me. I'm not paying to feel frustrated. She needs therapy and good meds! Rebecca Ward, MSW, LCSW

Chaos. I read everything from start to finish no matter how great or not. This will be the first of thousands of books I have quit, utterly boring.

CHAOS. I couldn't believe the ending...SHOCKER! As always Patricia Cornwell has me waiting for her next book! Just when you think it's over......

Chaos. I never thought this would happen but I find I couldn't get through this latest book of the torturous rivalry of Benton and Marino. Give me a break! This series is finally over for me. I made it through 102 pages and called it quits.

Awful. So boring. Gave up at page 147. Waste of time and money. Tedious, boring, no plot, goes on forever about the smallest thing and drags it out for pages. Never again.

Just OK... definitely hoped for more. I am a long time fan of Patricia Cornwell & purchased this new book the day it was released. Though I love her writings, I must say, this one was disappointing. The plot built extremely SLOWLY with little progress for 3/4 of the book. No suspense at all the majority of the book. Then we have 1 suspenseful (but very short) scene (one similar to many other scenes in past books) that was over in the blink of an eye. That's all, folks! These Carrie Grethen plots got old a long time ago, yet here we go again. This one made me feel that Cornwell may be really reaching to come up with new material. I would love to have the next new book move into some uncharted territory & build suspense like the older Scarpetta books!

Kind of a bore. I usually love the Scarpetta series books. This one was almost boring, too descriptive of things that just didn’t matter. It seemed like a long way to go to get to the heart of the matter, DNA

Chaos by Patricia Cornwell. Not Cornwell's best. The first 300 or so pages are repetitive and boring and very difficult to get through. It is like a pedantic, very boring movie with the real action taking place in the last few minutes.

Chaos. Took me a while to get through it , because I kept nodding off. No action.

Chaos. Just finished the newest Patricia Cornwell book. Once again, she never fails to write a story that keeps the reader wanting more. I'm already looking forward to the next edition of Doctor Scarpetta & company's crime-solving mystery.

Chaos. I like the prose style she uses in this book, but it makes for much more words without saying any thing of significant value. I prefer a lot of her other novels more because this book does not have enough action for me! I did read through the entire book. I was intrigued by the ending or how this story was to end. John V.

Worst Scarpetta book ever!. Save your money and don’t buy this book. The story line drags on forever and the plot line is weak. 500 pages into this book I almost stopped reading it because I was so bored.

Chaos (or... the lack thereof). As a longtime fan, I'm very sad to say that this was the worst novel in the Scarpetta series to date. After several books worth of buildup to bring back the old arch-nemesis Carrie, I was intrigued. Then this book drags along with a few hundred pages of predictable and disconnected events, with the majority of the actual plot and action literally taking place elsewhere - only to finish out the dramatic climax in just a few rushed pages, almost like an afterthought. Even the final "big plot twist" at the very end wasn't all that surprising. Lucy barely even makes an appearance throughout the entire book, which I found rather lame since this story is apparently the big finale to Carrie's "return from the dead". I've read quite a few very negative reviews of the past several Scarpetta novels, yet even when Cornwell made the regrettable switch from first person to third person narration awhile back, I still stuck around and gave her a chance. I was thrilled when she switched back to first person, and even though some of the the books that followed didn't quite measure up to her original style, there was at least a somewhat interesting and fairly suspenseful storyline. This is was the first Scarpetta book where I actually put it down several times to go do something else... not because I was busy or had to get some sleep, but because I was actually bored with the story! Hopefully next time around Cornwell will devote the time needed to develop a great story instead of rushing to publish a new book every year. She would do well to remember that quality is far more important than quantity.

Chaos. Another dud from Cornwell. Pass!

Chaos. I just love all of her books. Can't wait for the next one !!!

Don't waste your money. I've been a big fan of PC ever since her very first book...but the last 4 or 5 have been mediocre at best. 90% of "Chaos" covers a 24 hour period with 1/3 of the story dedicated to the trouble KS' staff has tenting a crime scene & describing how hot and humid the Boston weather is. The ending is rushed with the most important "scene" described in a scant 3-4 pages. I've never felt compelled to write a book review before but PC's lack of effort with this book is an insult to her fans, and the characters she has spent years developing. If this is what we can expect from her, she should stop writing and stop taking our money. I used to wait months/years waiting for the next KS book to come out as i knew it would provide hours of escape with wonderful writing and storytelling..."Chaos" might only be worth the $1 or $2 it'll be sold for at your library's book sale in a couple of years.

Awful!. How I used to love these books. How I used to wait for them! No more. They have become terribly boring - so much ado about nothing. I don't care about your ridiculous musings! I don't care! It's always a conspiracy - the people who work for you. Please, please, just give me a character to care about!!!
