Gabriella by Brenda Hiatt Book Summary

He lost a wager . . . but won a treasure.
Due to a lost wager, the Duke of Ravenham is obliged to bring a pretty little nobody from the country into fashion among the high-sticklers of London Society. Ravenham would never refuse a debt of honor, no matter how unorthodox, so he overlooks Miss Gordon’s vulgar relations to do what is necessary, escorting the unsophisticated chit to balls, etc. But what he expects to be an irksome duty turns out to be something quite different as he falls under the spell of his protege’s innocent charm. When he lost that wager, he definitely never counted on losing his heart as well!
First impressions can be deceiving.
Miss Gabriella Gordon only came to London at her mother’s and sister’s insistence, for she’d much rather assist in running her father’s veterinary practice than attempt to fit into fashionable society. No sooner has she arrived in London than the exalted (and exceedingly handsome) Duke of Ravenham comes to call. The reason is less than flattering, however: due to a lost wager, the Duke is forced to bring Gabriella into fashion, a “favor” she would certainly refuse if her family would let her. But the more time she spends in the dashing Duke’s company, the more conflicted she feels— particularly when she discovers they have more in common than she ever dared dream.

Went in with low expectations. I’ve read better and I’ve read worse. If you are on the fence about this book, just know that if you pass, you aren’t missing much. It’s an OK PG story where feelings aren’t openly revealed to their intended until the final chapters. The married sister is annoying and immature, but that’s what you get when you’re married at 19, have insecurities, and the need for approval and validity from others. If this were set in present day, she’d had an instagram account filled with selfies and risqué scantily-clad photos. Brie is a naive country bumpkin that wins over people with her honest charm and personality. The Duke is a knockoff Darcy with less discretion, as he visits on the regular. Overall, it didn’t captivate my attention, was a bit snoozeville, but not a torture to read.

Really enjoyed this book!. Very well written plot with interesting, if somewhat predictable, characters.

Delightful!. These engaging romances remind me of the early books of Mary Balogh, and that is meant as high praise!

Wonderful!. This book was a joy to read and I loved the characters! Bravo

Beautiful. You were able to feel the fondness between main characters. More affection between them tho, would have given this 5 stars!

Good, clean romance. Good, fast read. Clean romance.

Good read.. The book was good. I admit that the main characters were not very clear with their feeings, and that the author could have made it more obvious. However, I find that the Duke’s interest in Gabriela, and the way he goes about his love, reminded me of Mr. Darcy with a bit more passion. Overall a good read.

Fun quick read. Really enjoy this sweet romance

Gabriela. What a beautiful story. The characters were awesome. Great love story.

Boring. The story dragged on and there was no spark between the main characters. How did they fall in love? They barely interacted with each other. The writing is terrible too, the author needed an editor for this clunky mess. How does one "rise smilingly?" Please do not even attempt to venture into this meandering snooze fest.

Eh. Just eh.. While I can appreciate the cleanliness of the story, I’m seriously questioning how the two main characters could possibly have fallen in love. They barely interacted with each other, and when they did, it was all very formal and impersonal. The writing was also not very good, though that might just be my personal taste — there was little insight into the characters or their thoughts, Gabriella’s especially, so it felt like reading a bunch of summaries of a plot rather than being involved in a story. I wanted to understand what was going on in their heads and hearts, and I didn’t get that, unfortunately.

Ok. It was ok not the best tho 😐

Wayyyy better than the cover appears. I though this would be a book because of how *ugly* the cover is, however after being in my suggested books for two months, I decided to try it. Man was I surprised! This is such a good book, really enjoyed all the characters and felt it was believable. Everyone got their happily ever after (even Angela whom I still don’t like).

Great.. I quit liked this story plot. Regency novels are my absolute favorite. An enjoyable read worth your time!

Gabriellla. A charming story.

The book is well written the plot is where it lacks.. I am unsure whether this is a fast paced romance or slow. The MC has like four interactions with the love interest and i’m supposed to want them to end up together? The book is well written the plot is where it lacks.

Short. Actually a short story, or the first chapter of a book

Clean regency romance. The heroine is young, but grows in maturity and confidence as the story progresses. I appreciated her love of animals and competence in healing them.

Good Book. I enjoyed reading this book. It ended to abruptly. I like the stories that continue on in the facts.

Gabriella. A very nice, clean story. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Gabriella. Nice little story. Predictable but entertaining.

Sweet, clean regency romance. An enjoyable read and no less romantic for the omission of lusty, graphic scenes. If you’re a fan of regency romance and appreciate a clean, but still passionate storyline, this book may be for you! While it wasn’t the most outstanding book I’ve read, I’m happy to include it in my library.

How can u not love this book!. I read this book and adored It how anyone dislikes it is beyond me its amazing great work to author!

Gabriella. Great historical romance. Loved the story, the characters and the HEA.

Good Book. Enjoyable book. Loved it!

A nobody and the Duke. I loved reading this story about a country woman raised to be a veterinarian and the Duke who squires the beginning of her first season. The way they first meet and how this squiring comes about is a dream of a situation.

Loved this book. Very nice clean romance. I was glad to read to see that the love bloomed without the detailed sex scenes. This would be a very good romance for older teens.

Good Read. Interesting storyline and characters.

Brenda Hiatt, “Gabriella”. Page turner romantic historical romance. Endearing characters, great plot. Did not want it to end.

Mean sister. Just loved it!

Gabriella. Like as not, as good as Georgette Heyer!

Gabriella. A lovely romantic story

Gabriella. This was a clean sweet romance, which I enjoyed very much. There were a few grammatical errors, which I found a little annoying.

Gabriella. Lovely written and interesting. Thank you

Sweet. A pleasant story well written with good characters . It lacks a certain air of romance and chemistry which makes the reading somewhat insipid.

Lovely story. I love Brie's character. She's feisty and smart, a modern woman in her period. Enjoyable story.

Enjoyed this story. The excitement of a London season, a lovely heroine, misunderstandings and intrigue; but in the end love and common sense prevail and we have an enjoyable story with a happy ever after.

Gabriella. Very enjoyable read. Thank you Brenda.

Gabriella. Wow!I couldn't put down this book, I could read it over and over and over again!!

Gabriella. Interesting as usual as to how women were to be beautiful but have no merits on their own. The rake was shown as a true dad which I am sure was what they were and still are. Good story.
