The Trespasser by Tana French Book Summary

The New York Times bestselling novel by Tana French, author of the forthcoming novel The Hunter, is “required reading for anyone who appreciates tough, unflinching intelligence and ingenious plotting” (The New York Times). She “inspires cultic devotion in readers” (The New Yorker) and is “the most important crime novelist to emerge in the past 10 years” (The Washington Post).

“Atmospheric and unputdownable.” —People

In bestselling author Tana French’s newest “tour de force” (The New York Times), being on the Murder Squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she’s there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she’s getting close to the breaking point.

Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers’ quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed-to-a-shine, and dead in her catalog-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner. There’s nothing unusual about her—except that Antoinette’s seen her somewhere before.

And that her death won’t stay in its neat by-numbers box. Other detectives are trying to push Antoinette and Steve into arresting Aislinn’s boyfriend, fast. There’s a shadowy figure at the end of Antoinetteʼs road. Aislinnʼs friend is hinting that she knew Aislinn was in danger. And everything they find out about Aislinn takes her further from the glossy, passive doll she seemed to be.

Antoinette knows the harassment has turned her paranoid, but she can’t tell just how far gone she is. Is this case another step in the campaign to force her off the squad, or are there darker currents flowing beneath its polished surface?

Hard to finish. I seem to be in the minority but I could not get into this book. I was very excited about this book because it's in my wheelhouse with an exciting mystery and a tough female lead but I was quickly let down. I couldn't connect with Antoinette at all, I was very rarely invested in what happened to her. I think the most interesting character in this book is her partner and in the grand scheme of things we see him very little. It just didn't pull me in and I think the ending was a bit dull!

The Trespasser. Brilliant Five Star read with Ms. French once again demonstrating outstanding character and plot construction which hold the reader to each turn of the page. Waiting for the next Tana French release already!

The trespasser. My god I can't believe I bought and read 300 pages of this book. The author goes into extreme elaboration over every single detail. I felt water boarded. I'm relieved for not forcing myself to finish it.

The Trepasser. I love the detail that Tara French puts in her stories.

So. Much. DIALOGUE. The plot was good enough to keep me hooked, but I got so annoyed at the incessant, overly detailed conversations. The characters all had the same way of talking which made the endless paragraphs of dialogue blur together. The last few chapters are great, but the first 3/4 of the book are sluggish and suffocating.

Phenominal!. I have just completed reading all of Tana French’s books, in chronological order. And while I like all of her books, some are better than others. This sixth book, the Tresspasser, was phenomal! Trying to solve the crime while seeing everything through the psychological weaknesses of the lead character, kept me thinking and trying to figure out what was really happening and what was just imagined. It really challenged me, and I couldn’t put it down. Loved the storyline, and all the characters. I highly recommend it.

Just Wow!. Tana French is my favorite writer, just a few notches above Jo Nesbo. Her ear for dialogue is amazing. Her storylines unfold in unforeseen fashion. Each book is related in some way, mostly characters, to the previous- although the characters shift and move on and off stage. Her books are like your kids, it's hard to choose a favorite. "The Trespasser" fits the mould with twists and turns of plot and people that are hard not to either love or dislike. You don't ever figure out until the end how things are going to work out - the last few pages are always an "Aha!" moment. Tana French's only flaw is that her next novel isn't ready as soon as you finish the one you've just been reading. Fair play to you, Tana.

The Trespasser. I enjoyed this book. It was well written and kept me engrossed. The characters were well thought out. It gave me some perspective on how police solve crime. Didn’t realize how many blind alleys are involved until the truth is uncovered if it ever is.

Not my favorite of her books. This book felt, to me, bogged down with so much irrelevant information and emotional tribulation—it was a bit of a journey to just get through it. The main character wasn’t super likable and I often felt bad for her partner, however, Tana French is so freaking good at what she does. Her characters are incredibly believable and realistic, and though I’ve appreciated all her books—including this one—I just think The Trespasser was my least favorite. Perhaps duller and more predictable than her others?

Smartly written. Before The Trespasser, I have never been into Detective novels. Conway is simply a strong likable character that I read in a long time. The plot, on the other hand, is intensely suspenseful that you won't be able to resist. Just, extraordinary work.

Tresspasser by Tana French. In this, her third or fourth novel that I have read, she, or rather I ket myself to be to be led, sometimes nudged, into dead ends with slippery floors. By the time I found the light and the right oath to the solving of this mystery, i felt a bit foolish while at the same time feeling comfortable about staying the course to enlightenment and not simply gobsmacked with uncertainty about following her main characters trail of crumbs. She does an excellent job of getting the reader involved in the mystery and T the same time not using cheap tricks to confound you though confound you she does in spurts. She, Tamara French, doesn’t let me down and i am grateful for that. She provides well crafted stories with really good characters. Looking forward to reading the next one. Reading about crime outside of Chicago and the states lets me know we are not alone in being immersed in all the bad stuff that hits the nightly news. Peace out John

Amazing. Haven't enjoyed a book this much in years. It's a complex work and has interesting emotional swordplay. It's spellbinding.

The Trespasser. It was good but very slow at times, almost like full scenes of a movie being written out.

Another great one!. I have enjoyed all of Tana French's books and this one is one of my favorites. I find myself fixating on the characters to try to guess who will be the main character in her next one. Here's hoping we see Fleas next.

A Police Procedural. This book is told from the first person point of view of Detective Antoinette Conway who is partnered with Detective Stephen Moran. The Secret Place was told, in part, from his point of view. Conway is a somewhat less sympathetic narrator. The story has multiple twists and turns. I enjoyed it.

Not her best. Hugely disappointing, sluggish, totally predictable plot and unsympathetic, unlikable characters. I've read all of tana french's books and this one just isn't worthy of her

Finally!. The book was so well written. Ms.French's writing was more than just a well crafted story. I loved the dialogue, and banter of the characters. She gave them more depth than I've seen from any other author. This was also the first time in a few decades, that I haven't been able to solve the mystery halfway through the book. Satisfying until the end!

The Trespasser. Outstanding book!! I enjoyed reading this and could visualize the scenes so well. The ending was especially good as the protagonist understood a very important lesson and realized that her perceptions of reality were not always accurate, that her boss actually thought she was especially competent and honest, her boss had integrity, and compared herself to the victim's tunnel vision and fierce tenacity in pursuing a twisted and distorted desire for revenge to the exclusion of a happy life. The victim suffered from the murderer's selfish and arrogant decision, but she missed a great chance for a great life with love and happiness! Loved this book!

Awful. Soooooo needlessly long and a strong female detective is an awesome thing. One that’s just bitter and mean and says “@#%&” her about her victim is another. I shut down after that. The main character is awful. Wasted a few hours on this

The Trespasser. Tana French is one of my favorites but she missed on this novel. It was boring, went on forever about the same thing over and over and over!

The Trespasser. I guess I’m too American for Tana French. I find her books (I’ve read 3 others) to be sluggish and predictable, like a lot of British crime mystery movies and TV shows. Her characters and plots unfold rather monotonously.

Trespasser. Another winner from Tana French. Complex characters dealing with complicated issues. Deeply satisfying.

The Trespasser. Amazing book I could not put down! Gritty, believable characters and a tough female detective telling her story. Rich with authentic dialogue and the odd flash of Irish humour. So many twists and turns and so many possible suspects - who is the actual murderer? I've loved all of Tana French's books but this one is the most addictive. A great read!

There is an inconsistency in Chapter 12.. In chapter 12 the the author has Rory ordering tea with a little milk. Further on in the chapter the author has Rory drinking coffee. This is in the same interview.
