The Book Club Murders by Leslie Nagel Book Summary

USA TODAY BESTSELLER • In a charming cozy mystery series debut, Leslie Nagel’s irrepressible small-town heroine finds that her fellow book club members may be taking their Agatha Christie a bit too literally—and murder a bit too lightly.

Charley Carpenter has poured heart and soul into her clothing store, Old Hat Vintage Fashions. She’ll do anything to make it a success—even join the stuffy Agathas Book Club in order to cultivate customers among the wealthy elite of Oakwood, Ohio.

Although mixing with the most influential women in town has its advantages, Charley finds the endless gossip a high price to pay. But after two women with close ties to the Agathas are brutally murdered, everyone falls under threat—and suspicion. When key evidence indicates that both murders are the work of the same hand, Charley realizes that the killer has arranged each corpse in perfect imitation of crime scenes from the Club’s murder mystery reading list. She uses her membership in the Club to convince Detective Marcus Trenault to use her as an inside informant. Not that he could stop her anyway.

Intelligent, fearless, and every bit as stubborn as Marc is, Charley soon learns the Agathas aren’t the only ones with secrets to protect. Passions explode as she and Marc must race against time to prevent another murder. And if Charley’s not careful, she may find herself becoming the killer’s next plot twist.

“A good mystery with a solid dose of romance.”—The Ninja Librarian

“I found the book to have an interesting pace; it was like an adventure ride. Twists and turns, sometimes a quick chapter. other times the chapters are full and winding. . . . This book is a great start to a new and exciting series.”—Bibliophile Reviews

“The premise for this story is great, the plot is well developed, and I can’t wait to get to know the characters better as the series continues. I had no idea who the murderer was until the moment of the reveal, which is just the way I love it.”—Book Babble

Intriguing mystery, enjoyable characters. I did not want to put this book down. Between the whodunit and the romance between Charley and Marcus, I had to turn the page. Charley wanted to help the police after the first murder because she knew the people involved. Her past with Marcus, the lead cop, almost kept her from passing on information. I cheered for both Charley and Marcus as they realized the past was just that and that they were attracted to each other. The mystery was compelling with several suspects to choose from, and I found the "theme" behind the murders intriguing. I highly recommend this book. I received a copy of this story through Netgalley.

Book Themed Murders. The Book Club Murder is the first book by Leslie Nagel so I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found was a wonderful story that was cozy mystery mixed with romantic suspense. This is the first book in a new series The Oakwood Mystery series. This is a standalone with no cliffhanger, though it is open-ended for future books in the series. There is described violence, this is a murder mystery after all. The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that all of that info here. The author did a great job of explaining and describing the characters and the town. I loved the idea of the theme staged murder scenes and the aptly named book club. There are a lot of clues in the storyline that keep you guessing what twists and turns will be revealed next. And they continue to keep coming until the end of the book. It definitely kept me riveted. I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. I look forward to reading more of Leslie Nagel's books. I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Book Club Murders. I loved this book. Kept me so engrossed with characters and different murders following themes of mystery books I have read I did not go in back to see how it ended. Would recommend it to every mystery reader especially Agatha Christy fans.

Great start to the series. What started out as a normal, charming cozy mystery, quickly morphed into a very well written murder mystery with so many twists and turns to keep you guessing up until the very end. The author has created well crafted and believable characters with such unique personalities...not too quirky, or with over the top silliness. I was quite impressed with just how unique each character was, and their individual roles in the cadence of the story. Charley is not your typical snooping cozy mystery, meddling heroine...she actually demonstrates high intelligence and common sense at the same time. She not irritatingly rushing head long into situations that leave other characters TSTL, she, Frankie, Dmitri and Marc are well thought out characters who play intricate parts in the success of the stories believability. I look forward to the continuance of the series as I can only see good things coming from Charley, et al. This book was provided by the Publisher and Netgalley for my honest review.

First book in a new series!. The Book Club Murders by Leslie Nagel is the debut novel in The Oakwood Mystery series. Charlotte “Charley” Carpenter owns Old Hat Vintage Fashions in Oakwood, Ohio (wonderful state). Charley is joining the Agathas Book Club to garner more customers (a higher end clientele) for her shop. But Charley does not enjoy the ladies in the group or their endless gossip. It seems someone else shares Charley’s opinion. Serena Wyndham is found on a mattress under a bridge. The killer staged the scene, but why? Charley is curious about the murder and does some snooping around. Then a second victim, Lisa Summerfield is found. She is also from the Agathas and her murder is reminiscent of a book the club read recently. Whoever is murdering these women knows the Agathas Book Club members and the books on their reading list. What does the killer have against the Agathas? Charley is determined to get answers and make sure the culprit pays for his crimes. The Book Club Murders is easy to read and has a nice small town setting. I had high hopes for this book (a mystery about mysteries), but I was not entertained. The Book Club Murders, unlike regular cozy mysteries, contains foul language and sex (neither of which are needed). Ms. Nagel overplayed the sexual attraction between Detective Marcus Trenault and Charley (steamy, sizzling). It was over-the-top and annoying. I wrote down “We get it. She dislikes Marc but is attracted to him.” This book was turning into a “bodice ripper”. An example is “attraction burned as bright as ever” (cliché and not the only one in book). The first murder occurs in chapter one which makes for a long book. I wish authors would lead into the murder. If it happens too early in the book, the readers quickly loses interest (and skips to the end to see if they correctly identified the killer). The author is a descriptive writer and provides minute detail on what seems like every little thing. Charley was not a likeable character. She is extremely nosy, determined, and has attitude issues. It is Charley’s way and get out of the way if you do not approve. I give The Book Club Murders 2.5 out of 5 stars (I did not like it). The mystery may seem complicated, but it can easily be solved. There is a good twist, but, if you are a regular mystery reader, you will see it forthcoming. The idea was good, but I was not partial to the finished product. There is an excerpt for The Antique House Murders at the end of the book.

Loved it. I don’t remember how I stumbled on this mystery but I’m so glad I did! I loved the main character, nosy Oakwood shop owner Charley (Charlotte) Carpenter, her BFF, Frankie, and her wheelchair bound dad and his caregiver, Lawrence. She’s bright, inquisitive and — dare I say? — spunky. When members of the Agatha Book Club that she and Frankie belong to start dying, Charley is like a dog looking for a buried bone, tireless and determined to solve the mystery. And she does, but not before getting in the way of a hunky Oakwood detective and annoying and angering a lot of people. If you like cozy mysteries you will like this book which has a lot to recommend it. It’s well written, its characters are three dimensional, they have believable emotions and there’s even a nice little romance blossoming amidst the murders!
