The Lost Order by Steve Berry Book Summary

The Lost Order continues renowned New York Times bestseller Steve Berry’s Cotton Malone series with another riveting, history-based thriller.

The Knights of the Golden Circle was the largest and most dangerous clandestine organization in American history. It amassed billions in stolen gold and silver, all buried in hidden caches across the United States. Since 1865 treasure hunters have searched, but little of that immense wealth has ever been found.

Now, one hundred and sixty years later, two factions of what remains of the Knights of the Golden Circle want that lost treasure—one to spend it for their own ends, the other to preserve it.

Thrust into this battle is former Justice Department agent Cotton Malone, whose connection to the knights is far deeper than he ever imagined. At the center is the Smithsonian Institution—linked to the knights, its treasure, and Malone himself through an ancestor, a Confederate spy named Angus “Cotton” Adams, whose story holds the key to everything. Complicating matters are the political ambitions of a reckless Speaker of the House and the bitter widow of a United States Senator, who together are planning radical changes to the country. And while Malone and Cassiopeia Vitt face the past, ex-president Danny Daniels and Stephanie Nelle confront a new and unexpected challenge, a threat that may cost one of them their life.

From the backrooms of the Smithsonian to the deepest woods in rural Arkansas, and finally up into the rugged mountains of northern New Mexico, The Lost Order by Steve Berry is a perilous adventure into our country’s dark past, and a potentially even darker future.

Disappointed. I really love many of Berry's books but this one was very disjointed. I liked the premise (or it would have been 2 stars) but the delivery was uncoordinated. Bummed me out.

AWESOME!!!!!. This book is, as are all Mr. Berry's books, fascinating! I love history and being able vicariously be at these locations is incredible ! Thank you and I can't wait for the next adventure!

The Lost Order. Another great book from the past, mixed in the present. I have an interest in the Knights of the Golden Circle and have seen several TV programs on this subject. This book is fiction, but to me it felt real.

Well done..... I thought this book was very well written and I was able to read easily at a good pace. The story is actually somewhat believable adding to one of Steve Berrys best work.

Will help you fall asleep. I have always enjoyed Steve Berry's books, but not this one. There are four related sets of people and the book jumps from one group to the other right after you forgot the earlier group's story. The book rambles, never rewarding your attention to the story. It was a bad editing job. And speaking of bad editing, neither the author nor the editor know how pronouns work. 'He" and "She" are used without a clue of who is talking. That is one more thing that makes the book very difficult to read. I'm only about half way through the book. I fall into a nap about every third page. I doubt, however, that the book will get much better. Steve Berry needs a new editor.

The Lost Order. I have read everything Steve Berry has written and loved everyone. Sorry I can't say the same on "lost order". To much reading to finally get to where you knew it was going.

Awful. Worst of the Cotton Malone series. Multiple (5-7) sub-plots going simultaneously, changing every 2-4 pages. Very distracting. Gave up 3/4 of the way through.

No. So Berry knows a lot about what he writes about and just can't help himself from telling us all about it. The back stories are numerous and endless and take us totally away from the main story. In this case the plot was thin and the main characters kept getting into trouble through sheer stupidity and then miraculously surviving. Couldn't wait for the whole thing to be over. I'm sure he fancies himself to be another Dan Brown and he is not.

The Lost Order. Compelling. Full of actual historical information and captivating intrigue. A great read. Anxious for the next Cotton Malone novel. Dr Joseph Dean

The Lost Order. Once again the author exceeds expectations with a novel which blends history and fiction into a novel that captures the imagination.
