1927-1929 годы Сент-Экзюпери провел в Африке, работая начальником промежуточного аэродрома Кап-Джуби на южной границе Марокко (этот аэродром описан в «Южном почтовом»); там он и закончил свою первую книгу, начатую еще несколькими годами раньше. Впервые она была издана в 1929 году.Первая повесть Сент-Экзюпери во многом еще несовершенна. В частности, неорганичной для творчества этого писателя оказалась любовная линия ее сюжета; вообще, сюжетное построение книги скорее препятствует свободному выражению идей и проблем, волновавших ее автора. Тем не менее здесь уже звучат многие важные содержательные мотивы – мотив человеческих связей, соединяющих рассказчика с его другом Жаком Бернисом, мысль о порядке, который человек вносит в мир своей деятельностью. Напряженная (порой еще недостаточно ясная) стилистика повести предвещает стиль зрелой философской прозы Сент-Экзюпери.
