Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.

Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man’s relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother—his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life.

The stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother’s unconventional, unconditional love.

Trevor is amazing. a book that is equally entertaining and informative. it’s fascinating to hear about Trevor’s origins and the many hardships he had to overcome to get to where he is today.

Amazing Book!! Worth Reading. It’s a really good book but can be very intense at some points

Wow. Words cannot express the depth and personality in this book. Trevor’s voice and writing style are so personal, he guides his readers to not just know his story, but to view it and feel it as he does.

Loved it. I wish I’d have read this before my trip to SA. A great little history lesson with perspective from a “colored” boy. Plus, Trevor is so funny!

I went to high school in South Africa. I went to high school in South africa and can tell you not many pieces of storytelling capture the ins and outs of South Africa quite like Trevor’s book. Its nothing short of a faithful love letter to his home, his family and his initial world. Absolutely incredible

One of the greatest books of all time. This is by far one of the greatest books I have ever read. From start to finish this had me laughing and interested on each page. It is very knowledgeable on the cultures of South Africa and the hard world it is out there. Great read

I loved it!. I did not see that coming… He’s got so many great stories… stories that someone that grew up in the suburbs of California would never even imagine ㅋ ㅋ ㅋ!

Truly great book. Excellent, emotional read .

Terrible. Trevor Noah is trash

Read this book.. If you like Trevor Noah from The Daily Show or his stand up, you’ll like this book. If you’ve never heard of Trevor Noah, you’ll like this book.

A Life Story worth reading. The book was amazing. The whole story was like he was explaining the story to you. The beginning was funny, it definitely had some great parts to it. But after reading this, you really who Trevor Noah is behind the mic.. and it was beautifully put.

So much living. This book is personal and historical. It is a tale of survival and miracles. The insight that he is able to write with is stunning. The writing is so accessible. He is teaching us about the devastation of racial apartheid in South Africa and the US. It teaches that while a government can change and make change suddenly, the damage done by such a system won’t be healed so quickly and in some cases may never be repaired. He also teaches us about the unwavering love and self-determination of his mother. I was saddened, curious about some of the folks who came and went and deeply inspired by this book.

Educational and jaw dropping. Eye opening story. Very good to learn about South Africa while reading Trevor’s story. I have so much respect for Trevor and his family

Excellent Book. What an amazing story and so very well-written! Best story I’ve read in a long time.

Wow!!!. Wow what an extraordinary book. I went through all the emotions you can think of; sad, happy, inspired, angry, you name it. This book was well written. Well done Trevor! Thank you for sharing your story with us!

Couldn’t put it down. He made me laugh and cry. I loved his insight into the many situations in which he found himself. I have always been a fan and now even more so.

Motherhood. It was my second time reading this book. I loved it more than I did the first time. I teared up, again. This book contains a beautiful meaning; that meaning is the love we have for our mothers. A mother’s love is unique and indefinite. I totally recommend reading this memoir!

Hit so many nerves!. I laugh while I cried as I read this book. So well written and reminded me of my childhood in Armenia.

Great read. Lots of knowledge about South Africa, great story

Great story. Great book, really enjoyed it. Gained a new respect for Trevor Noah. Definitely recommend this book if you like autobiographies.

Great book. Written in a very entertaining format. Loved every page. The last bit had me in suspense.

Wildest book I’ve read prolly. Idk how mans is still walking among us 😳

Wow! What a life story!!. I’ve always enjoyed Trevor Noah’s intelligent comedy but I see him completely differently after reading Born a Crime. The respect & admiration I have for him has grown immeasurably. And his mama…there are no words to describe her that do her true justice. Patricia is in a class of her own among strong, intelligent, determined, and loving women. I highly recommend this wonderful book. It’s incredibly captivating!

2022&2023 World Tour. Please add Seattle or its vicinities to your World Tour. The west coast, specifically me, would love seeing such an upstanding comedian in person. Your mother is a beautiful person inside and out. She’s still the most beautiful person in your family. I’m convinced that a woman is behind every successful person. You’re so fortunate to have your mom.

Wow…. It was just beautiful. The comedy, the seriousness and the last chapter had me sobbing.

Excellent work Trevor!!!. I loved this book! The read was easy, clear, funny, sad, real, inspirational, and informative! Thank you for sharing your story ❤️

Wow!. What a great writer! I did not expect this book to be as well written as it was, or as captivating as it was. It was completely worth my time and I wish I could tell Trevor how much I appreciated it.

Incredible autobiography. What an incredible life story! The things you never knew that you really should have known about South Africa: the people’s lives, the apartheid history - It’s a magical land that endured, as did its people. Trevor Noah imbued his story with so many deep emotions that I could literally see the stories he told. Five fabulous stars!

Holy S what a book!. Riveting. Well written. Amazing

Fantastic. Well written and easy to read.

Absolutely boring and reaching. It’s clear he’s just reaching for a money grab, and this book was written with generating income only, not actually creating a good book. Plus, I think some of the stories are obviously fake/made up for the book. I’d give it less stars if I could.

Deeply Touched. Trevor, what a life. What a journey. I hate all the attempts by Abel to steal joy, love, family and all good things from you and your mom. In the end he didn’t win. Your mom wins. You win. Your brothers win by seeing the tenacity of yourselves and your loyalty to all that’s good and true. God Bless you.

Absolutely fantastic. I could not put this book down. I didn’t know much of anything about apartheid before reading this and am now very intrigued to learn more. The difference in experiences between races and being born a crime because he is mixed are so tragic, and Noah tells his own story in a very captivating manner. Now I’d love to listen to the audiobook to hear it in his own words. Highly recommend.

Outstanding!. Profoundly sad, funny and inspiring all at the same time.

Great!. Made me laugh, cry and think.

Great, great book!. A very eye opening experience from Trevor Noah, along with humor to lighten the situation/story.

Heartfelt tribute to a mother. An absorbing story of love, life lessons and the tragedy of apartheid told with sensitivity, humor, and brutal honesty.

Oh Mighty Patricia. I laughed, I cried and even found myself becoming angry. The education I received from reading this book is absolutely unmatched. You hear about racism and segregation but you never read or learn of what is was like being on the inside. The mind is a powerful tool and for humans to abuse the sensitivity of thought for hate....it’s so shameful. Thank you for sharing this with the world and thank you for sharing your incredible Mother with us all. She is the assurance I needed to stand proud of my independence

Highly recommend. Well written and very entertaining. I learned a lot about Trevor Noah and how growing up in a post Apartheid SA shaped the man he is today.

Audio book request. I would really like an audio book version of this because I am dyslexic, but love books! So pls, if available, have an audio book when ready.

A great book. I relate to his book on many levels. Everyone should read it, seriously.

Awesome read!. I am a fan!

Magnificent. I finished reading this book in 5 days I laughed, I cried, I laughed and cried. Best book I’ve read in years.

Never disappoints. Thank you…that’s all

Great book.. Very good and matter of fact. I enjoyed reading every page!!

W Book. Saul Goodman Approves 👍🏻

Great book. One of the deepest books that I’ve read. Far beyond my expectations.

Infectious writing. This book was very compelling and interesting. I gained quite alot of insight into apartheid and the culture at the time. I also heard that F W declerk just passed away recently.

book. was a great book overall, but tbh not a fan if the writing style lots of unneeded sentences also all the names in the book are confusing and annoying to say

Great Book. I really enjoyed this book. It’s always good to find out what a person has lived through & how it can shape who they become & their views about the world. I will not, however, understand or embrace prejudices or racism because of someone’s skin color or if they’re mixed. Heck, most of us, especially in America, are mixed. Sometimes we have to laugh thru the pain & injustices. I appreciate that he shared so much of himself & his story.
