Same Beach, Next Year by Dorothea Benton Frank Book Summary

New York Times bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank returns to her magical Lowcountry of South Carolina in this bewitching story of marriage, love, family, and friendship that is infused with her warm and engaging earthy humor and generous heart.

One enchanted summer, two couples begin a friendship that will last more than twenty years and transform their lives.

A chance meeting on the Isle of Palms, one of Charleston’s most stunning barrier islands, brings former sweethearts, Adam Stanley and Eve Landers together again. Their respective spouses, Eliza and Carl, fight sparks of jealousy flaring from their imagined rekindling of old flames. As Adam and Eve get caught up on their lives, their partners strike up a deep friendship—and flirt with an unexpected attraction—of their own.

Year after year, Adam, Eliza, Eve, and Carl eagerly await their reunion at Wild Dunes, a condominium complex at the island’s tip end, where they grow closer with each passing day, building a friendship that will withstand financial catastrophe, family tragedy, and devastating heartbreak. The devotion and love they share will help them weather the vagaries of time and enrich their lives as circumstances change, their children grow up and leave home, and their twilight years approach.

Bursting with the intoxicating richness of Dorothea Benton Frank’s beloved Lowcountry—the sultry sunshine, cool ocean breezes, icy cocktails, and starry velvet skies—Same Beach, Next Year is a dazzling celebration of the infrangible power of friendship, the enduring promise of summer, and the indelible bonds of love.

Disappointed. I love this author. I really do. That being said, this book was a huge disappointment. The story felt contrived and worse, quite predictable. I love the Low Country, which is why I read Frank’s books. They usually take me there in my mind as she weaves her story, making it seem like one of the main characters. This book, however, did nothing of the sort. I stuck with it till the end in hopes of finding some redeeming factor, but to no avail. My advice, skip this one for sure.

Same beach next year. Great story. Feel good book. I love happy endings.

Check the facts please. I really liked this book until 70 percent through. One of the characters gets hepatitis c and let's just say there was no fact checking going on. Then it just got sappy.

Same Beach, Next Year. Dorothea Benton Frank's best since "the Last Original Wife". Her characterizations are incredible and bring each and every character alive as someone we have all known. Her stories about relationships ring true and bold, and always make the reader dig deep into the story. This is a jewel. Don't mistake it for a quick summer read.

Same Beach Next Year. Eliza’s thoughts- Hilarious! Loved the characters.

Chatty!!!. I usually love books by this author, I've read everything she's written. This time I can't say I hated the story, it was fun. But for some reason the author felt like she needed to describe every little detail to the extreme. It really got annoying, at least a the third of the book could have been cut out. I mean I'm all about painting a picture for the reader but I found myself getting really frustrated! I'm not saying don't read it but don't say you weren't warned...

Cute story. Happy ending and roller coaster all the way through

Not Usual Standard. I usually like this author, but this is her worst so far. Plot is weak and sometimes absurd. Don't bother.

Same beach, next year. Very corny book. I was ready for it to end way before the ending. Not a big fan of this book.

Just okay. I usually like this author. I found this book to be boring and didn't really care for the characters. I only finished it because I spent good money on it. Skip it.

Same beach, next year.. I wish I had read the reviews before buying this book!

A little tedious. Usually I enjoy Dorothea Benton's books, but this one was very wordy. It was a good idea to write each chapter from the point of view of each character, but it wound up that you were reading the same thing over & over. All the musings & thinking of the characters got tedious after awhile; you started to not care. The descriptions of the surroundings and food were too much, I found myself skipping paragraphs just to get through it. I usually enjoy stories like this, but I found this story...well, tedious.

Movie copy. There is a movie Same Time Next Year circa 1978 with Alan Alda & Ellen Burnstyn. Author and publisher should be ashamed for copying premise. Soon as I read few pages, I knew I had already seen the movie. Don't bother with the book.
