The Lying Game by Ruth Ware Book Summary

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES, USA TODAY, AND LOS ANGELES TIMES BESTSELLER!

“So many questions...Until the very last page! Needless to say, I could not put this book down!” —Reese Witherspoon

“Once again the author of The Woman in Cabin 10 delivers mega-chills.” —People

“Missing Big Little Lies? Dig into this psychological thriller about whether you can really trust your nearest and dearest.” —Cosmopolitan

From the instant New York Times bestselling author of blockbuster thrillers In a Dark, Dark Wood and The Woman in Cabin 10 comes a chilling new novel of friendship, secrets, and the dangerous games teenaged girls play.

On a cool June morning, a woman is walking her dog in the idyllic coastal village of Salten, along a tidal estuary known as the Reach. Before she can stop him, the dog charges into the water to retrieve what first appears to be a wayward stick, but to her horror, turns out to be something much more sinister.

The next morning, three women in and around London—Fatima, Thea, and Isa—receive the text they had always hoped would never come, from the fourth in their formerly inseparable clique, Kate, that says only, “I need you.”

The four girls were best friends at Salten, a second-rate boarding school set near the cliffs of the English Channel. Each different in their own way, the four became inseparable and were notorious for playing the Lying Game, telling lies at every turn to both fellow boarders and faculty. But their little game had consequences, and as the four converge in present-day Salten, they realize their shared past was not as safely buried as they had once hoped.

Atmospheric, twisty, and with just the right amount of chill to keep you wrong-footed, The Lying Game is told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, lending itself to becoming another unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

Not that good. Took me weeks to finish. :(

It’s was just ok. Honestly, compared to other Ware books, this one was ok. I felt that the story was very much so dragged out. The book did not need to be nearly as long as it was. The actual plot wasn’t terrible however the ending was really anti-climactic. I will still enjoy reading Ruth’s books but this one was again just an ok read for me.

What i did not know about breast feeding. I dont quit books but i could not wait to finish this one. Back and fourth over and over. Please tell me what the last line in the book meant. Was Owen not Freyas dad? A waste of my tiny brain. HELP

Not her best…. I’ll start by saying I really love her books. I’ve read all or almost all of them, and I was expecting this to be great as well. And then…it just wasn’t. I always enjoy her writing style, so it wasn’t a completely awful experience the whole way through, but it took me FOREVER to finish it, and that’s saying something. The premise of the story I definitely liked—old friends from a creepy boarding school that have a deep, dark secret & have to return as adults? Awesome, sign me up. But then it just dragged & dragged…and dragged some more. I was bored with the story, the characters, the setting (I really thought there’d be more actual danger than there was), all of it. There were twists, sure, but nothing very interesting to me. If it had ended with a bang or some thrilling, crazy action, I’d have forgiven this book, but even the “climax” was dull to me. Like I said, I really tried to like it but I just couldn’t get into it.

Sooooo. Slow. Wordy beyond belief. I couldn't wait for it to end!! Just finished. I will never read another of her books!

I really didn’t enjoy this. I hate giving up on a book but I just couldn’t take it anymore. I didn’t enjoy a single page of this

The lying game. I have no idea how this author is getting so high reviews! The plot is so easy to guess, it’s predictable and the story is so flawed,so why anyone wants to continue reading and yet she gets to publish again and again!

Love, Love, Loved It!!!!!. This book was my first Ruth Ware book and I totally recommend it. Besides the cursing it was really good. I would love to see Salten if it really was a place in England. But it’s not. I loved the twists and turns this book gave me chills as I read it.

The lying game. It was a fun read, I was distracted with the bit about the girls texting 17 years ago, texting was years away from being a popular form of communication in 1999, 2000 so that did take me out of the book.

Could be better. The story isn't bad, but the book wasn't too excited as the previous one (the woman in cabin 10). It was just an "okay" book.

So so boring.. Skip this one. Terrible.

The Lying Game. Took me a couple chapters to get into this book. Once I did I couldn’t put it down!

The Lying Game. Ruth Ware is the Agatha Christie of our time? I don’t friggin think so. That was dreamed up by a desperate staff reviewer who drank too much Starbuck’s trying to stay awake after reading this snoozer. This is my second Ruth Ware book. I expect it be my last. Slow, not enough of a story to fill the pages.

Yup you ty. The TGIF

The Lying Game. Not as brilliant as her first two.

Lying Game. Loved it!!

The Lying Game. I loved her other books from star to finish, but this one was hard for me to get into, once I got into it got me guessing who did what to who!

Gave up. I really enjoyed another book by this author but this was just boring.

You can skip this one. I hate implying to anyone to skip a book by one of their favorite authors or in their favorite genre, as they might find something or feel something more than I did, but that's the nature of reviews, I suppose. I'm a bit of a suspense/thriller novel junkie and The Lying Game didn't cut it for me in that aspect. The imagery is beautiful and RW truly creates an interesting world for the reader, but it was very easy to understand what the "twist/ending" would be. I was imagining the scenarios as I was reading it and I was correct. Perhaps she just gave too much away or limited the scope of the book to where it was nearly impossible to draw a different conclusion. But, other readers may feel differently about it. Maybe just reframe expectations--a drama, a fiction piece, not a thriller and that will change the level of satisfaction. The novel she wrote after this one, The Death of Mrs. Hathaway, IMO, is much better. I wish I'd paid better attention to the other reviews and just bypassed this one or had started it with different expectations.

Long-winded but a good story. A good story but long-winded

Well crafted thriller. I loved this book! Great twists and turns as you’d expect with any great thriller; but more than anything it was the authors style and voice that I loved. The book flowed so smoothly and brought about so many emotions. Truly titillating! Bought all her other books because of this one alone.

Ending Lacking. Although the author’s books doesn’t truly have shocking endings and may be easy to figure out early on (it’s always at least one of the conclusions I guess before hand) she still writes in a very enjoyable way to me. Just have to working on ending the story better!

Weak women!. Dull, thought-it-would-never-end book. I don't know how it got so many stars with so many bad reviews.

Good idea... Just was very redundant and not that thrilling. Was hoping for more and never got it.

Not as captivating as I had hoped. A long yarn! Slow getting to the meat of the story!

Great Summer Read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I read it at the beach while on vacation. I thought it was the perfect combination of Pretty Little Liars and I Know What You Did Last Summer. After I finished reading it, my sister and both parents wanted to read it.

Thrilling! Twists and turns alight!. A story of 4 friends who met at a boarding school in HS at 15. They become a very tight knit and play a game with lying to ppl to make them think and believe outrageous things. One the girls fathers works at their school as an art teacher and he allows them to stay at his home on weekends. They aren’t given limitations and allowed to drink smoke etc but soon they find themselves burying the Dad- their friend said he commits suicide but bc she isn’t 16 until another month her decision to bury him and say he is missing after she turns 16 is why she tells her 3 friends she needs help burying him. For 17 years after they committed that act and subsequently got expelled from their school shortly after they haven’t seen one another. They communicate sporadically throughout the years until the girl who’s dad was buried sends for the 3 of them bc his bones had washed ashore. What happens.agter is nothing you’d imagine and there’s murder and lies alight

I just want. I I'm trying my new best to get

Meh. It was okay. After reading her two other books, the twists are becoming a bit predictable.

Not very good. The writing was good, but the subject material is of Mean Girls type.

ToooooooWordyyyyyy. She needed an editor for this book big time

Meh. Not great not awful just meh.

The Lying Game. Quick read and a true page turner.

The lying game. Good but I got a little tired of reading about Freya’s every little sneeze- I’m a devoted mother but Isa is neurotic

Stupid!. Boring, silly plot not expected from Ruth Ware.
