Cat Killed A Rat by ReGina Welling & Erin Lynn Book Summary

Nothing bad ever happens in Ponderosa Pines

That's what anonymous gossip columnist Chloe LaRue and her best friend, town matriarch EV Torrence thought. But then, Luther Plunkett, a handyman with aspirations, raises a stink over building regulations, and promptly turns up dead.

Small-town mysteries have a way of snowballing out of control for someone who has been seen arguing with the now-deceased in front of the entire town.

Before the body gets cold, EV becomes suspect #1 in the murder, and not even Chloe can stop the rumor mill from churning. Not since the founders argued over naming it Ponderosa Valley after a ranch on an old TV show, or Whispering Pines for the trees surrounding it have the residents of Ponderosa Pines been so divided.

Against Detective Nate Harper and Deputy Dalton Burnsoll's orders, Chloe and EV mount their own investigation—but what they uncover might just rock the community to its very core. Could one of their own beloved citizens really be a killer?

If you like humorous cozy mysteries set in Maine, and quirky characters, Ponderosa Pines is the place for you!

dont waste your time. drags on for way too long with unnecessary blabber.

Cat killed a rat.. Great read. What a charming community. Can I move in? The authors handle their characters with ease and skill. Co-authorship always begs the question of who wrote what. These ladies spin a good yarn.

Mystery good-geography bad. The story line is good and I enjoyed it thoroughly, but having lived all over the US, including New England and the west coast and being married to a Unitarian Universalist minister, nearly every page took me away from the story and screamed impossible...this author did not do any research! The story is set in New England, but Ponderosa Pines are strictly a western tree. They do not grow East of the Mississippi River. Clematis is not a native eastern plant either. Lilacs, however are abundant in New England, and the further north you go (NH, VT, ME) the more variety in color you get. South has white and "lilac" or light purple. North has those, but also very dark purple. Trees, not bushes...lilac bushes are strictly southwest...very hot and dry climates. In the first chapter it is established that EV is 53, and presumably Dalton is about the same age, however, he and his wife were in love when they were 17, and she reconnected with the woman she left Dalton for at her 20th class reunion. He’s been divorced for a year. Even if that was a college reunion she and Dalton would only be 45 at the oldest now. Bad timeline. It’s not "the chapel proper," it’s the sanctuary. EV and Dalton had dinner at Little Bill's but all other references are to Little Bob...bad proofreaders. And fog in New England isn’t really a summer thing. It’s an early spring event. The fog described happens when the air is warm and there is snow on the ground. The temperature difference causes the heavy mist that lies low, close to the ground so that only a church steeple or two can be seen peeking through the top, and you can barely see the hood of your car. Your description is very accurate, your season is just wrong. Again bad timeline, or research. I did not go back into the book and look these up...it’s just what I remember from reading the book. Too many things kept interrupting the story for me to really get into it. I guess the worst of all is Ponderosa Pines. It’s on nearly every page, and every time it yanked me right out of the story. Tommie O'Sullivan

A cat killed a rat. A short story - enjoyed but could have read more - thanks for your writing!

Keeps you wondering. It keeps you wondering about who’s the killer.

The Cat Killed a Rat. Fun book! Nice little twists!

Cat Killed a Rat. What a delightful escape from the monotony of recovery from an injury! Once I had picked this book out on my tablet, I literally couldn’t put it down until the tablet battery went dead. Finished it the following morning. Riveting. Can’t wait to read the next one.
