Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson Book Summary

The #1 New York Times bestselling sequel to Words of Radiance, from epic fantasy author Brandon Sanderson at the top of his game.

In Oathbringer, the third volume of the New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive, humanity faces a new Desolation with the return of the Voidbringers, a foe with numbers as great as their thirst for vengeance.

Dalinar Kholin’s Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible cost: The enemy Parshendi summoned the violent Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction, and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a desperate flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may be wholly justified.

Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower city of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was too narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar can put aside Dalinar’s blood-soaked past and stand together—and unless Dalinar himself can confront that past—even the restoration of the Knights Radiant will not prevent the end of civilization.

Incredible book. This book weaves together sanderson’s classic style with a whole new level of twists and turns that will amaze the reader. Highly recommend.

Sic series AGAIN!. Thank you!

Waaaay too long but loved it.. Besides being a very big book (1,248 pages), this isn’t the end of the ‘trilogy’. I enjoy Brandon’s books very much as I also did this one. I was ready for the series to end because it takes up a great deal of my time plus I now have to wait another 2 years or so before finding how the story ends, if it does with the next book. Overall I loved it and would do it again.

Amazing and Epic. What do you look for in a book? Weak characters, simple plot lines, obvious endings; if this is what you seek, move along. Mr Sanderson crushes the typical fantasy genre story line and replaces it with engaging characters, identifiable weakness, gripping heroism, and a superbly satisfying story. Leave your expectations with lesser world builders because Brandon will create in you a desire to leave your mundane and normal human life and become something much more!

Loved it!. Best series I’ve ever read. Love the characters and the world building in this series is mind blowing.

Amazing!. This book lived up to the rest of the series phenomenally, just cant get enough of his work!

I love this series and this was awful. What a rambling shame. The other books are outstanding. Expensive and huge disappointment.

So freaking awesome.. The review title says it all.

Best Stormlight book. With their whopping page counts, the Stormlight archive books can definitely be intimidating and daunting to read. While I did find myself feeling that prior and during my reading of this book, this book has become one of my favorites. This book made me laugh, cheer, and cry. Dalinar’s character and his story has got to be one of the best journeys in fantasy. I grew to love each and (almost) every character in this series. With each book the world of Roshar gets deeper and deeper and more complex, but it always keeps you interested. Recommend to all fantasy fans.

🤯🤯🤯 WOW! Simply WOW!. Oathbringer is the largest book I’ve ever read, over 1200 pages, and somehow it wasn’t enough. I absolutely love The Way of Kings, and immediately jumped into Words of Radiance. But after finishing the first 2 books, I was still on the fence about committing myself to what I know is going to be a 10 book series (especially when each book is 1000+ pages). Well, that all changed with Oathbringer. With character defining moments that make you fall in love with everybody, world building on a scale I never thought possible, and battle set pieces far beyond any Hollywood movie, Oathbringer has solidified my commitment to the Stormlight series. “Epic” does NOT do this book justice.

Astounding. These books just get better and better as I continue to read. Simply mind blowing

Yooooooo. Favorite series ever. Stormin fantastic.

Epic tale of loss and redemption. Engrossing from start to finish fleshing our mankind’s place in the Cosmere that Brandon Sanderson has created. I normally don’t have to reread books but the previous novels are littered with subtle details that provide a detailed foundation for this book. No spoilers here other to say I found this a great read and look forward to the future.

Amazing ending. I can’t believe I have to keep waiting after that ending I need to finish the books ASAP

It’s fine, I guess.. I feel like this might not be a popular opinion but I’m looking for something that fills the void left by ASOIAF until TWOW comes out. This just wasn’t it. The characters lack the depth of Martin’s characters. The story is fairly predictable. The novels are long and I just can’t bring myself to finish this because I just don’t care about the characters.

Fantastic. Well done. I loved every page.

Extremely long read. The plot of this book/series moved way too slow for me in this installment. After reading what would be more than 1000 printed pages, the progress of the ongoing story line has not moved enough for me. I won’t be reading another book in the series.

Best one yet. Seriously though, I can’t wait tell no 4

Oathbringer. I loved the first two and waited patiently for the third. I’m greatly disappointed. It a bit of a mess: disjointed, uninspiring, and barely readable. “Journey before destination” ... with the first two, I enjoyed the journey. With Oathbringer, I skimmed large sections just to get to the destination. A pity ... I’m done.

A Masterful Mess. First, I think Brandon Sanderson is the greatest fantasy author going. He has great characters, entertaining stories and a mind-blowing ability to create worlds. And the Cosmere is awesome. But truth be told, this book is a boring slog. Editing! We could have shaved off a good 300-400 pages and this would have been a masterpiece. The best book ever! But it’s not. Sadly.

My first born son is named Kaladin!. That’s how much I liked this series. The only complaint I have(which really isn’t a complaint)... now I have to ready Warbreaker to try and figure out the story behind Vasher and Sword-Nimi. In fact I need to read all the cosmere books because I can see them all bleeding into this series.

A triumph. Sanderson and once again shows that the wait was worth it by producing not only a story that has characters and story as rich as the first book, but manages to move the plot along at a steady pace, resolving plot lines and giving you the overall experience every book reader wants from their reading. All the while leaving you hungry for more.

My Favorite Stormlight Book. This sweeping saga is a wonderful series that I wholeheartedly recommend reading. Don't be daunted by the length of the books (this one especially). The longer they are, the longer it'll take to read them, which is a very good thing. It gives you all the more time to savor the detail of this elaborately planned high epic fantasy. This book was so satisfying to read and I guarantee it will bend and expand your mind in a way you’d hardly expect. I can hardly wait for the next seven books!

Boring. So much time spent talking about Kaladin just to end up surpassed by other characters I thought he was going to end up being the strongest or something really special, nope. Kinda like what happened with Jon snow from GoT. They talked about his bloodline then at the end he ends up being nothing so why even waste so much time talking about him. The going back in time parts were so boring I almost quit reading the book, instead I just skipped ahead whenever it started talking about the past. Then theres the jumping around between characters every other page, i dont know how I managed to finish the book. The first two books were really good but this one was boring and disappointing i wont be reading the next one, im out.

The best. He will go down as the greatest fantasy writer

Amazing book. I loved this book! This book was SOOOOOO amazing. I loved the recurrent theme of be yourself.

Love the book. I wish the action was better distributed. This would also make a great show. I’m looking at you Netflix.

Better and Better. This series just keeps picking up steam. As soon as one mystery is cleared another one pops up. The characters remain engaging and interesting. Definitely a landmark in the world of epic fantasy.

Blew my mind. This was just so creative. Great ending. Can’t wait until the next installment.

Amazing as always!. So excellent! Absolutely love Brandon Sanderson and this book does not disappoint!

Great. Great

10 +++ stars. Amazing and profound, Sanderson does such a great job at making this epic fantasy relatable!!!

Good, but slow. I am love this series and have absolutely devoured every one of the books…until this one. I’m not sure if the setting was the problem, the focus on the ever-indecisive King as the main character, or just fatigue from reading nearly 4500 pages of content. Either way, this one didn’t hold up as well for me.

Simply Stunning. Today marks a dismal day, for today, I finished Oathbringer and now am subject to nearly a whole year of waiting for Stormlight 4. Part of me worries ‘will Sanderson be able to top Oathbringer?’ Yet part of me believes, or rather knows, that like Bridge 4 believes in Kaladin’s resolve, I believe in Sanderson Stormblessed. So for the next year, I can rest easy knowing the next book will be another masterpiece, as is Oathbringer. Oathbringer is everything Stormlight fans would want in the next-in-series. The story is extremely well-crafted, and quite simply, a required read for anyone claiming to be a fan of epic fantasy, or anyone who just likes an incredible story.

Unparalleled. Brandon Sanderson is the best world builder our world has! His stories and charters and worlds are phenomenal! This book, all 1200 hardback pages of it (even if read partly on iPhone) are enjoyable!

Amazing. I was totally swept away!!!

Wow. Amazing epic.

Awesome book.. I loved this book so much! It’s amazing! Totally recommend! I especially love the world building and characters. (Kaladin and Lift are my favorites. 😁)

Didn't Come Together. Read three of the books, and this last one was a mistake. There were too many disjointed sequences which made for confusion. Usually, going back in time can be interesting, but in this book it mainly served to sidetrack the reader away from a story that needed a more consistent path.

Wish I had bought something else.. Not Sanderson best work. Very rumbly. Sort of like a girls

Slow start solid finish. The other 2 were much better but still a solid book.

Oathbringer. Everything you want in a novel. Brandon Sanderson delivers, I have all of my coworkers reading and listening to his books. You will not be disappointed.

This series.... Not quite done with Oathbringer. So I’ll say more later. But good lord this is good.

I, for one, actually read it. Not enough quality to justify the quantity for me. I have read both books before this and feel that this is still the best one by far. Pros: Incredibly detailed world Can be fun to read Cos: Chapters that drone on and on and on Unrealistic and uninteresting characters and situations that somehow strain your very high suspension of belief There’s TOO MUCH girth to this book for how much it actually delivers Would give it 2.5 stars or so but this will do just fine. Some genuinely interesting and engaging moments, sprinkled into a a whole bunch of “blah.”

Oathbringer. Twists turns and great action. Can’t wait for book 4. Re-reading immediately!

Cosmeric Celebration. Brandon Sanderson’s masterpiece immerses the reader into a gripping tale. The dramatic, political and religious elements create a well-balanced adventure of fantasy. This work is a page-turner that will take the reader through a gamut of emotions.

Oathbringer is sensational!. Book 3 builds to a storm of action that will leave you breathless. Please don't make us wait years for the next installment.

Another great read. Although this book could have been quite a bit shorter without losing any of its potency it was still a terrific story. Lots of questions answered early on. A bit slow in the middle and a furious pace at the end. For a Branderson fan it is a must read.

Amazing. Brandon Sanderson is a Lightweaver, a master craftsmen if words. His words trigger the Stormlight in the mind of the reader, forming wonderfully imaginative scenes and scenarios. The cosmere that he has created feels like a home which I have become exceptionally fond of.

Great read. Action packed and awesome lore.
