The Murder at Sissingham Hall by Clara Benson Book Summary

"It's absolutely delightful, and I would recommend it to anyone who's a fan of Sarah Caudwell, or Agatha Christie, or anyone who loves really clever British murder mysteries set in the '20s." - Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl.

On his return from South Africa, Charles Knox is invited to spend the weekend at the country home of Sir Neville Strickland, whose beautiful wife Rosamund was once Knox's fiancee. But in the dead of night Sir Neville is murdered. Who did it? As suspicion falls on each of the house guests in turn, Knox finds himself faced with deception and betrayal on all sides, and only the enigmatic Angela Marchmont seems to offer a solution to the mystery. This 1920s whodunit will delight all fans of traditional country house murder stories.

Pass on this one. Horribly predictable and a very boring read.

Enjoyed. Cute book

Great book!. This is a great story! I loved it! I had me guessing with each page! I ended up fallowing each character closely and begging for more when I finished it! I binge read for 3 hours because of all the turns! I highly recommend this to mystery lovers out there!

Amazing book, so many plot twists. It had so many twists and turns

The Murder at Sissingham Hall. Really enjoyed your book. Love a good mystery and of course the ins and outs of how the it was solved.

Loved it!. Great characters and a fun read!

Too Predictable. I knew very early on who the killer would be before the murder even occurred. Ending felt very thrown together.

Fun Read. Such a fun who done it. From start to finish great book.

The murder at Sissingsham Hall. Very good mystery. Kept my interest

Great title for a great book. The best thing about this book is that it’s never a dull moment. This is the first book I’ve started and actually finished in the past 10 years. I do not read at all, but this book had my mind locked in. Totally worth every minute of reading.

Loved it. Read it in one go, couldn’t put it down

Sissingham Hall. It took me a while to read this. The story seemed to drag on a bit but overall, I enjoyed the book. Interesting characters and quite the ending!

Very good. Draws you in and keeps you guessing. Very good read.

Okay. A by the book book. Run of the mill with a little something missing. Clara benson’s other series started off more interesting.

The best book I’ve ever read. As I look at the diverse comments, I cannot believe my eyes! This book wasn’t predictable for me, and I watch, read, and listen to crime every day! Wonderfull series!

Sissingham Hall - predictable, but not bad. Light read - not bad, but not unexpected. By page 45, I knew the victim, the killer, and the motive. And then, 2 chapters later, the murder actually happened. Whole plot throughout very predictable. Decent character development, but do they all have to be involved in discussing the clues? Definitely a case of too many cooks. Needs more Angela Marchmont involvement, instead of sitting idly by on the sidelines watching people die. Plot so light, clues stand out like neon billboards. No surprises here, folks. Having said that, I’ll probably read more Angela - fun, light read.

Not your best British mystery. This book was very predictable. I knew who did it before they even announced that someone had died. It also had a very similar storyline to an episode of the old Hercule Poirot series on PBS. There was an over abundance of British jargon, which was tedious.

The Murder at Sissingham Hall. Well written, engaging, character driven mystery.

A Great Read. Unexpectedly an enjoyable book. Written like an Agatha Christie novel, I loved it. Old English charm, believable characters and a compelling mystery. Can’t wait to read more of this author’s work.

Sissingham Hall. Rate 3 out of 5

Absolutely Painful to Read. The book seemed to drag on and on. The main character was NOT Mrs. Marchmont as the “Angela Marchmont Mysteries” has you to believe but an absolute idiot that you want to take and shake. The killer was obvious from pretty much the beginning and the only reason this got two stars from me is that how the killer did it was still a mystery. The ending was just kinda dumb and not believable.

Good for a quick read. It was a classic British detective and well-written. The plot was a little predictable, but still suspenseful enough for the majority of the book to make it enjoyable.

Weak Mystery. I didn’t much need Angela to solve the mystery for me, as it was too obvious that Sir Neville was already a goner when Roamund urged her ridiculously inept “friend” to accompany her to the study, pretending to converse through the door with her husband. From there, the “mystery” was utterly transparent. None of the main characters is particularly well drawn, though Sylvia and Joan are not as improbable as the others. If this was a first novel, I guess there might be some hope that things may improve in future attempts at the genre, but I’m not sure I’ll devote much energy to find out.

The Murder at Sissingham Hall. Good story. Surprised by the ending.

A good English murder mystery. I have always enjoyed English mysteries. This was no exception. It had twists and turns, and surprises. I would recommend it.

Great setup, a bit obvious in the conclusion. Loved the characters and the set up! Enjoyed the secrets that got unfolded, but wish a bit more mystery remained at the end

Me. Good enough

Agatha Christie-esque. Very fun novel, Benson is a comparable author to Christie

Very good read!. This story in written in such a way that your drawn to want to know more about the characters. The read is easy and enjoyable and the plot is well written.

Can’t wait to read the others. I knew who the killer was right away but it did not take away from a good book. I wanted to found out exactly how they did it the moment I knew. Can’t wait to read the rest of the books.

Don’t even start this series. I love historical mystery series, and I read many. I cannot believe this series made it past the first entry. There is very limited character development beyond stereotypes, and the main character is simply too silly and stupid to make the reader care about his plight.

Long and boring.. Too much needless talk, very slow and too long. Could have been 50 pages less.

A great read. Refreshing and unputdownable. If you’re looking for a break from intensive reading or studying this is perfect. Easy to read period murder - for anyone who likes period dramas that move along quickly. Left me wanting to read more by the author.

Review of Murder at Sissingham Hall. This Book is a must for fans of AGatha Christie

So terribly British.... And how marvellous is that....a joyous and enticing read.

Fantastic. I absolutely loved this first book in an amazing series. First time author for me but definitely plan to read more. JackieT

Murder at Sissingham Hall. Excellent story. Set in different times in England with gentry, ridiculous standards and behaviour, murder and deceit. Well done.

Fun Romp. This story was very enjoyable the entire way, if not somewhat predictable. This was exactly what I signed up for. Character development is solid for a short-length story, and the characters are relatable in the sense that they feel like they could be real people (in a completely surreal situation).
