One of my favorites. I can read this book so many times and never tire of it. Her metaphors, similes, analogies are all brilliant. Definitely recommend this novel & the movie. (Michelle Pfeiffer being a great reason to watch!)

Milk of the poisonous stem. A teenager girl, Astrid, grows up in bohemian Los Angeles without knowing her father. White Oleander begins as Astrid's mother is arrested for the murder of a writer friend. Her mother, played by Michelle Pfeiffer in the movie, believes she and her daughter are too good for the unimaginative and the unknowing. The author, Janet Fitch, captures much about recent Los Angeles as does Joan Didion '70's Southern Cal. Read the book before you see the movie.

Great read!. This book holds a special place in my heart. I originally read this book from the Oprah's list -book club. So this read marks my second go-at-it. It was then that I encountered this books' greatness. I feel in reflection of the story, Astrid represents the painful adolescence that is often felt in real life. Also, I believe that this book addresses our deepest fears of having a parent go to jail and the due process of law that comes to children. The state isn't where children belong because they will grow up fast and loose the elements of furthering their education and be pulled into a survival mode. Parents of teens need their families and siblings to grow into functioning adults. I am glad that Janet Fitch adresses the growing and often silent epidemic facing teens who are dealing with areas of temptation of pre-marital sex, drugs and small criminal acts. All and all, this book was a wonderful yet bittersweet compilation of a teen's life and the silent epidemic of of those who's life spells t-e-e-n-a-g-e-r of our day and age.

Read before seeing movie. This book is amazing, and as always, more descriptive than the movie. The movie leaves out a lot of details, but was also great.

Disturbing. I thought this sounded like an interesting book- something different. I read the sample and thought it’d be good...boy I was wrong. I couldn’t get more than 1/5 of the way through before stopping. Reading about a 14 year old girl and a 50 year old man together- no thanks! It could take a different turn, sure, but I refuse to read through that to see. Waste of my money.

Favorite book ever!. This was my favorite book ever. it's a long book, but it is so good that it seems not long enough!

Modern Jane Eyre. No it's not the story of a governess who falls in love with her employer. Not even close. It actually feels more like David Copperfield than Jane Eyre but its a girl's story of losing her mother and then having to fend for herself in a world where people use her and throw her away time after time. I'm a guy and I don't consider this a girlie book. It's just a book about a girl. And a very good one at that.

One of my all times favorites. I have read this book three times over the years and I’ve watched the movie many times. If you haven’t read this, do it now! I have a paper copy with all my favorite parts underlined.. this book touches my soul. Will read again, I’m sure.
