Columbine by Dave Cullen Book Summary

Ten years in the works, a masterpiece of reportage, this is the definitive account of the Columbine massacre, its aftermath, and its significance, from the acclaimed journalist who followed the story from the outset.
"The tragedies keep coming. As we reel from the latest horror . . ."

So begins a new epilogue, illustrating how Columbine became the template for nearly two decades of "spectacle murders." It is a false script, seized upon by a generation of new killers. In the wake of Newtown, Aurora, and Virginia Tech, the imperative to understand the crime that sparked this plague grows more urgent every year.

What really happened April 20, 1999? The horror left an indelible stamp on the American psyche, but most of what we "know" is wrong. It wasn't about jocks, Goths, or the Trench Coat Mafia. Dave Cullen was one of the first reporters on scene, and spent ten years on this book-widely recognized as the definitive account. With a keen investigative eye and psychological acumen, he draws on mountains of evidence, insight from the world's leading forensic psychologists, and the killers' own words and drawings-several reproduced in a new appendix. Cullen paints raw portraits of two polar opposite killers. They contrast starkly with the flashes of resilience and redemption among the survivors.

Expanded with a New Epilogue

Great novel. Easy to digest and very thorough. 👍🏼🤓👍🏼

-420 stars. this is fiction. fake. a mistake. misinformed. misinterpreted. you don't understand or know enough about columbine to write a book about it. half this books is just simply lies. tragic.

Captivating. Growing up in Littleton, Colorado, I felt like I had a good grasp of the events that took place during and after the shootings. This book opened my eyes. In the ten years since the shootings, the dozens of parallel investigations, coverups and the families' recovery has become the real story. Columbine presents a thoroughly researched, detailed account of the events in a captivating way, as well as a very detailed examination of how two boys from a suburban community could have gone virtually unnoticed while planning and executing such a horrible act. A highly recommended read.

He knows nothing true about this case.. One of the worst interpretations of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. This book is awful.

Bullets, Bombs, and Biggotry. David Cullen's book is a collection of fallacies and conjecture. Anyone who's studied Columbine can tell that this book is not what you want to go off of for information on the massacre and events surrounding it, he repeatedly makes things up to cover for his lack of information. If you want an honest account of Columbine, Harris & Klebold, and the events surrounding it, read Brooks Brown (A Columbine survivor)'s book "No Easy Answers"

WOW!. I am 3/4 of the way through this book and I just need to clear my head. I remember the Columbine incident, but like everyone else not directly affected, it slipped out of my mind. I downloaded a sample of the book and after reading it, immediately bought it. This book reads like a horror novel. The time it took to research it shows in the detailed descriptions of everything and everyone involved. The definitive book on this tragedy. I will not forget Columbine again.

There will never be an answer to “why?”.... and the author acknowledges that early and often. Instead, we get a well researched “how?” that draws on a variety of perspectives to piece together the timeline of events leading up to and following the tragedy. The blame is placed squarely on the killers, where it belongs, without glossing over the warning signs that were missed and/or misunderstood.

Shocking. Great storytelling and emotions are conveyed well. Some of the killers POV entires or thoughts are jarring and horrifying while also mystifying. A longer read, but worth it nonetheless.

Bounce around too much!!. Book was interesting but I found it very hard to follow at times..

Amazing.. *****

Columbine. As a high school social worker I found this comprehensive look at the Columbine massacre to be moving and eye opening. The amount of details, gathered over the past 10+ years, bring the reader into an intimate understanding of this awful day.

Must Read. Some colleagues recommended this book to me. It was hard to read but well worth it. A beautifully constructed biography of a terrible event, portraying the mind of a psychopath. Anyone who wants to know more about the tragedy that occurred April 20, '99 should read this.

Heartbreaking. Very moving account. Powerful look at the shooters & their victims.

Incredible. Dave Cullen did an incredible job. I also read Brooks Brown book, and I would describe it as having extreme tunnel vision compared to Cullen’s book. Extremely thorough and well written. I was shocked to learn ‘Active Shooter Protocol’ was enacted following Columbine 20 years ago. There was absolute no reason for the cops at Uvalde to do nothing for over an hour. Disgusting!

Very real. The writing is so real and sad that you feel like it happened in your own hometown. I will never look at a High School when I enter it the same way.

Years of investigative research is apparent. Insightful and enlightening. Over twelve years later and the myth and incorrect information created the media was all I knew of this tragedy. This book was eye opening and informative and was written in a way that made it hard to put down. I highly recommend this book.

Riveting. I thought I knew the Columbine story, but as the author points out, most of us only knew the superficial media version of outcasts persecuted by jocks. This book showed me that that was not the case. I also didn’t know about the community of Littleton and all of the evangelical Christian influence. That was incredibly fascinating. There is a lot of detail in the book, but the writer keeps it interesting. Overall, it’s quite riveting. Sadly so.

My review. I really like how the book gives a deeper insight into what happened and it was a very interesting book to read especially since I wasn’t alive when columbine happened.

An amazing book. Dave Cullen is an amazing author. This book was so well written and very informative, it covered everything about columbine. I'd like to see more from Dave Cullen and I recently read his article on the Colorado theatre shooting.

GREAT. This is a Great but very Good book about Columbine, great details about the events and insights on what happend that day! I would give it 1000 stars !!

What a scare.... Felt the writer conveys the victims and survivors with much care and pieces the killer's actions, motives, and remains with acute consideration. To know the difference between the media's portrayal and the reality of this horrific incident spawned a lot of google-searches because you have to see what you are reading. After a while I had to take breaks to visually match up what The words meant because the atmosphere surrounding this event is so senseless and sucked out of emotions. This book makes me what to know what the smallest signs of a psychopath are to stay as far away as possible.

Well researched, well written. My only complaint would be that the author chose to not tell the story chronologically, which makes it a bit confusing from time to time. On the other hand - it breaks up some of the tougher sections that way and gives you a moment of respite after some of the gruesome details.

A great book about an awful day in history.. This book was an amazing chronicle of the tragic events surrounding the Columbine massacre. Mr. Cullen's investigative reporting was objective and fact based. I simply could not put this book down. I'm not sure what exactly led me to download this book but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I would strongly recommend it to anyone interested in learning what happened in the lives of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold that led up to that awful day in April 1999. Well done Mr. Cullen. Well done.

Incredibly fascinating read!!!. Absolutely loved this book. Couldn't put it down!

Great read!. This book was informative, eye-opening, and touched my heart. I have repeatedly recommended this book.

What?!. How can anyone actually like this book..? For someone who actually studied this, one could easily tell that most of these facts are WRONG. Not even gonna go into the creepy obsession he seemed to have with Eric...

Great Book. This book was excellent. It brought to light many untruths surrounding the killers and their motives. It also uncovered one of the biggest cover-ups in Jefferson County. It was a lot more to that tragedy than the general public knew. Very insightful.

Thorough, gripping & unsensational. Cullen's book is an exhaustive, clinical look at the Columbine shooting. He cuts through the media hype, debunks commonly accepted myth and details the factual events leading up to, during and after the shooting. Cullen clearly pored over thousands of pages of released evidence, hours of video, and conducted years worth of interviews to arrive at what seems to be the single holistic study of the not only the "who," but the "why" in the Columbine tragedy. ...and the book cover is absolute perfection.

Love this book. Best book ever

Amazing. With such a terrible tragedy that occurred, I am honored to have been able to have read this. I'm from charleston, SC and we recently had a terrible tragedy of our own with the mass church shooting. Prayers are still going up for every family, including the two shooters families.

Worthy. Definitely worth the read. This did not glorify or point fingers. A book of thoroughly researched facts. May the 13 victims rest peaceful and the survivors be able to move in faith.

Columbine. Profoundly disturbing and sad, but thorough, balanced and very well written. Highly recommend.

An excellent read. This book has filled in many gaps that I have wondered about since the terrible incident. Well written, with so much information to take in. This tragic event is better understood with the insight of the author. A must have indeed.

Columbine. This was I good to great objective look at a horrible part if modern society. I thought the viewpoint of the book was great and very balanced. I would gladly write more but I'm on a ipad. Sadly this book offers great data and information but no true answers. A modern addendum as to current solutions or suggestions to make kids safer in schools since then would have been great.

Fiction at it's finest. Shame on Cullen for selling out for 15 mins of fame. THIS IS NOT THE DEFINITIVE BOOK ON COLUMBINE. Cullen sold out to mainstream media to hush up the bullying rumors, period. He claims the killers were not bullied because they didn't write it in their journal, of course they didn't they knew their journals would be read and they wanted to portray a certain image and I resent that he makes light of this fact. They were not popular and were picked on, also the assessment that Eric was some Casanova and got laid is a joke he and Dylan died virgins, for the truth about Columbine read Brooks Brown's book. Simply put in a court of law do you believe people who had first hand knowledge ( Brooks Brown & many others that actually knew both boys ) or some fiction author who makes things up and wasn't even there? There are soo many lies told in this book it is unfortunate that Cullen is a coward and decided for a little fame he would lie about these boys in death, so disgusting. Anyone interested in reading the truth don't buy this book, educate yourself before you buy and research. I also strongly disagree with the portrayal of Eric as a psychopath he was angry yes, very angry but he felt emotion and psychopaths have no emotion. Dylan was the one that fooled everyone because he hid his emotions and it also angers me that he places most of the blame on Eric portraying Dylan as some hapless follower unable to think for himself give me a break! Both are equally responsible. April 20, 1999 was a tragic day in history and there were 15 victims. I blame the school and the people that bullied these two, there is never a time it is ok to look the other way when someone is being bullied and CHS can make believe it didn't happen and so can Cullen with his fictional tale but the friends of Eric & Dylan told the truth.

Wow. Excellent book! Sometimes very drawn out but otherwise excellent information.

Repetitious. This book could have been considerably shorter. There was a lot of repetition of facts and events that could have been condensed into a shorter account. The book is basically a factual account of events at Columbine between the event and today. I was hoping for more discussion on the mindset of Eric and Dylan.
