WAR by Sebastian Junger Book Summary

In his breakout bestseller, The Perfect Storm, Sebastian Junger created "a wild ride that brilliantly captures the awesome power of the raging sea and the often futile attempts of humans to withstand it" (Los Angeles Times Book Review).

Now, Junger turns his brilliant and empathetic eye to the reality of combat--the fear, the honor, and the trust among men in an extreme situation whose survival depends on their absolute commitment to one another. His on-the-ground account follows a single platoon through a 15-month tour of duty in the most dangerous outpost in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley. Through the experiences of these young men at war, he shows what it means to fight, to serve, and to face down mortal danger on a daily basis.

Thanks for writing this!. First off, I am not much of a reader, but I zipped through this book in less than a week on my tiny iPhone 4 screen. I have lots of family and friends that have served and are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, reading this book will open your eyes to what these guys really go through for our safety and freedom. This book is BEAUTIFULLY written and engaging from start to finish. This is MUST BUY! Thanks for sharing the story of these brave men that so many of us seldom hear.

Well done. Sebastian Junger has done an amazing job with his latest book, "War". What makes the book so amazing is that the book is written from the standpoint of someone who was there, as opposed to a history book based upon first hand interviews, etc. I recommend it.

Great Book. Really expands your horizons of just the general knowledge of the war on terror.

Must read.... As a veteran of Iraq, my experiences were very different from the men of Battle Co. However, this book captures exactly the brotherhood of combat and the strange groundhog day of war. Read it and you will understand why deployment is the best-worst thing in the world... Thank you, Mr. Junger for writing what needed to be written.

Amazing. Amazing. I could have stopped there. It doesn't matter who you are or how old you are this is such an interesting subject with such involvement and insane recklessness on the authors part you cant help but be glued to the pages. It's entertaining and important. Everyone who lives in America should read this and I don't mean that in a patronizing way. It's just important to know what the military goes through and why they are so good. Trust me this book will stick with you long after you finish reading it and you will have a well rounded view of today's current events.

War. A wonderful book that covers the harshness and emotional tolls of fighting a war in Afghanistan and any war in general.

Politics not important. A wonderful voice and perspective.

War. Great 1st hand insight into the psychology of soldiers on the front line in a war and how the journalist could not and would not take on a weapon to fight.

Good write. Good first hand information about the front lines. I didn't care so much for the psychology background information. Waiting to see the movie "Restrepo".

Awesome. One of the very best stories about brotherhood amongst those who serve our nation.

Absolutely mesmerizing. Reporting at its very best, this book explains with truth and even poetry the awful and awesome effect of war on young men, and leads you to wonder what effect this war will have on those of us who sit at home while it continues.

WAR. This is an outstanding book. As a combat veteran with the 25th Division in Vietnam it rings true 100 percent. Every member of the Congress of the United States should be required to read this book. Our Army needs to come home. They have done everything this nation has asked them to do and more. Now bring them home.

Great insight and perspective. The author does a great job of conveying a sense of purpose and brotherhood that few can...I really enjoyed the analysis he did and the linkage to outside studies and facts.

Wonderful on all fronts!. Self absorbed author!?!? Are you kidding? This book provides an honest look at what "war" was in this instance... Sebastian did that very well. Having grown up next to Medal of Honor Recipient Staff Sergeant Sal Giunta's cousins and knowing him as a young boy, I surely had vested interest in this book, but aside from that I honestly feel that this book is very well written and is an excellent read from page 1. I feel that Sebastian's mix of objectivity and his friendships with the men really kept things real. I highly recommend the enhanced e-version of the book as well as the award winning documentary "Restrepo" to really tie the whole story together. Bravo Sebastian and Tim!

An honest assessment of war. Junger has succeeded in capturing the gritty essence of an existence that most of us can only imagine through a Hollywood lens. His narrative is purely apolitical and delves into the most primal human emotions that drive these young men. This is an eye opener, even for those of us veterans of a peacetime military.

Restrepo rocks. Wonderful account of personal experience in one of the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan, written with compassion and deep knowledge. Very sad to know that Tim Hetherington, the author of photos, was killed recently. What a loss of a talented person.

Amazing. Amazing is about all I can say. Great way to get a better view of the war and what was happening there with the soldiers. Very hard to put down.

Very good book. I don't normally read books but this book I could not put down you have to get it

War. War gives a great account of the conditions that our soldiers are having to adapt to in the Korengal Valley. This first hand account puts you in the action and you leave questioning the military decision makers for creating these outposts that seem as though they could be over run by insurgents at any moment. The book puts you in the bunkers and in the firefights. I finished the book wanting more.

Book to add to your general knowledge of the Afghan war. This is a great read and really puts you into the middle of everything on a day to day basis in Afghanistan. It's definitely a book you have a hard time putting down after a few chapters. These types of accounts are critical for people to full understand the dynamics of what is going on in the war overseas. Adds to the depth of understanding

War. I found this book interesting, but not as well written as "The Perfect Storm". Very fragmented and open ended.

A great read.... ...for those who live under the blanket if security our men & women provide. I find it to be a better read for those of us who have not experienced war & all its human consequence.

Hard to put down. This book is a page-turner. If you enjoyed the story of Joker One check this out; and vice versa. I am eager to see Restrepo. It looks powerful too.

War is the nature of men. And it always will be,, a lil taste of the huge sacrifices men do and go through so the rest don't have to.

Excellent. Great read. Changed my view of this war. As a veteran it should be required reading for all citizens. God bless our outstanding men and women who protect this country .

First book I've read on my iPad. Can't put this down. If you like military stories this won't disappoint I cant put this book down, a pleasure to read.

Gripping. What s gripping book with a non-political stance. I was very impressed with the book. It helps me in my everyday job to understand combat vets just a little bit better.

Amazing. Junger captures the war experience and brotherhood right on the button. The psychology and research added are tremendously relevant and mind boggling as he links his story telling.

Return of the Junger. Excellent book. Bad title, but great read. A gazillion books have been written on the subject, but few capture the "this is how it really is" essence. Read this.

Excellent. I could not put this book down. I was surprised to find the background of a current country leader a the dangers he faced early in his career. The Army troops were very impressive and the characters were very real. It made me very proud to read about how well our military is trained and the quality of the individuals soldiers.

One of the best. It's hard to find a book that you can not put it down, this book is THAT book. It tells a story of what real war is like. The reality of war, not the glamour of war as often described in the main stream media, is told honestly without reservation. Must read.

I figured out how to review just because of this book. I couldn't believe the detail and realism junger was able to use to paint the picture of what it's like to be a soldier. Im going to buy a paperback so that i can hand it out as a gift. Great first hand account and I couldn't tell what his politics were by his book (that was refreshing). Must read.

Spare me.... Junger is a typical self-absorbed journalist….and that’s what his writing is all about. Sorry, Junger, it’s not all about you, and your silly agenda. It’s a shame he doesn’t respect the warriors enough to get it right.

10 stars. Having been in Afghanistan as an 11b I can say this is the first book that doesn't sugar coat things or fluff things to make the book better. If you want first person accounts then this is book for you. If you think the war is like what you see on the t.v. show Army than this isn't the book for you.

Spot on.. From a vet of both wars he's spot on.

Amazing book!. This book keeps you constantly focused on the battles and ordeals the men must face. Great book!

Raw and engaging. Crist. Clean. Beautiful and horrifying at once. Junger sheds light on the many nuances of war, belonging, and brotherhood. Perhaps everyone should read this book to better understand what our modern soldiers go through.

Great book!. Watched the movie Restrepo and had to read the book. I could not put this book down. Absolutely amazing!

Chris. Unbelievable book! You don't get this story watching news. Whether you are for war or against it, got to read it! A movie doc is coming out as well. Can't wait to see it.

Great Book. Five Star

Top Notch. From start to finish, an absolutely fantastic account of the war in Afghanistan. Top notch work.

Wow!. Junger puts you right in the action. The lengths he went to get he story are unbelievable. I mean who actually goes to the most dangerous place on earth just to get the unedited version? Well done!

Great book. This was a really great book. It put the reader right in the battles.
