God Is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens Book Summary

Whether you're a lifelong believer, a devout atheist, or someone who remains uncertain about the role of religion in our lives, this insightful manifesto will engage you with its provocative ideas.

With a close and studied reading of the major religious texts, Christopher Hitchens documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope's awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix.

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris's The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion.

Exhilarating. As we'd expect from Hitchens, this is an extremely well-written, clearly argued and clear-sighted discussion of the role of religion in society. His depth of knowledge, humor, humanism and his wide-roaming intellect come through on every page and make it an instructive and incredibly engaging read. A reminder to all of us that we have free minds and many opportunities to use them. Exhilarating. The focus of the book is on the three major Abrahamic religions; I would have loved more on Buddhism.

Great Book.. Haters will always hate, This book is a must from the mind of a great man who is deeply missed.

Best author of our time. Christopher Hitchens if your in hell, I can't wait to meet you down there. Great book!!!

To: #68. You had to read the title 3 times to become interested? Wow that mustve taken a long time, huh. Listen kids, i was once a christian too, but the fact remains that christianity is a sick hybrid of Judaism and ancient mythology. Just think, Paul the apostle was upset by the Jews for their disbelief. They had the right to not believe. If jesus really was the son of god he would have appeared to everyone not just 10 people or so. Thomas did not believe and supposedly had to see for himself. What happened? he saw jesus and touched him (in the fantastic story) and his doubts were pleased. You cannot expect anyone to believe something just because you think its the inspired word of god. ive been around it my whole life and i see nothing special about it. the old testament is from jewish poets and moses and perhaps prophets. the new testament is shady eyewitness accounts and letters not intended for us. all were voted upon to decide which were "divinely inspired" This religion is going to die and ill be glad to see it go

Utterly brilliant. This isn't a great book just for its argument, but Hitchens' mastery of words that makes his bluntness so effective. He walks a clever line of false modesty that shows off his intelligence, yet carries you with him. This is polemic at its absolute best. Years later, it continues to define the atheist argument against a divine creator, putting the proof back in the court of those making the assertion. The Hitch is still missed, yet we can enjoy his words and the audiobook, his voice, long after his demise. His afterlife is in his work, like this. What a legacy.

God is great!. He will know the truth, one day.

Worst book ever. I am a believer. When i read this, I almost passed out! I ran out crying and went to my bible and my tears were all over it. And I said “I will never leave you again!” And I read the bible for the rest of the year. If there was an option for a 0 star review, I would do that. Pls help! Never make a book like that again! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Brilliant. I read it and listened to the audiobook. A beautiful dismantling of religion. Get a dictionary if you must. It is well worth it.

Horrible. This book SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS! This flipping idiot put me to sleep in the dialog! I had to read the title THREE times just to even become interested. What a waste of paper....seriously dude go back to college and figure out something else to write about.

Evil. What more can you say? Brainwashed Christians? No, methinks brainwashed atheists

heresy. u are a heretic and pagan 😐

A fantastic read!. Don’t be turned off by the title. This book is factual and comprehensive -it should be required reading for every young adult, hopefully before they become indoctrinated into one way of thinking.

Who Cares?. Decent book but I honestly don't care. Obviously no one really believes in God because it's so ridiculous. But to write a book against it is wasting time because everyone that matters agrees with him.

So many Christians. are reading this book, as evidenced by the one star ratings you see below. That's fantastic! Each one serves as reinforcement to the free thinkers in the world. I do not have to tell you how inspiring this book is, the sheep have done it for you here...god is not great.

Who knows.... Whether there's God or not, no one knows. But to say that this unknown is great baffles me. I doubt rabbis during holocaust still thought God was great. In fact, many rabbis didn't and renounced their religion while in concentration camps. I doubt people in Rwanda thought God was great when they were butchered. the list can go on. Humans need someone/something to believe in. Fine. But whatever you believe in, don't use it as a threat or excuse or as an oppressive tool. Don't create fear in others, just believe to find happiness within yourself.

Superb. I first encountered this wonderful title in a quaint little bookshop in queens a while back. I plucked it off the shelf, opened it up, and was captivated. Before I had been content to tolerate religion, but Hitchens's tearing off of the tarp showed me that religion is indeed a poison to humanity. And buzz off those who give a one star because of their beliefs and not because of the actual quality of the book. There's forums for that.

God gets Hitchslapped.... If the value of one's life is determined by his contributions to the debates and discussions about what is true and what is just then whatever side of the religious fence one falls on it would be hard to not recognize how huge a contribution was made by Mr. Hitchens with this manuscript to that very discussion. I was often in opposition to Hitchens on issues so this review or opinion is not the product of a Hitchens groupie but rather a reader who was made to consider all sides of an issue by an extraordinary author who often shocked his readership by taking the often not so popular or expected side of the issues our culture and society today face.... A great read.

Exceptional. Well spoken, well cited and well argued, Hitchens hits a home run with this book. My only fear is that I will now have too much information to use in arguments.

One of the best books of our time!. One of the best books of our time!

Utterly convincing. The work of a remarkable wit. The project of the work attempts a great deal—seemingly too much for a short read—and accomplishes all of it.

Mere Christianity. I'm currently read Mere Christianity, which is the logical argument CS Lewis developed as he went from being atheist to becoming Christian. If you really want to be opened minded I encourage you to read this become with a truly opened mind. I tried read the sampler with an opened mine and nothing I read stirred me to think that God isn't real, but convinced me even more how much we all need Jesus. Love you guys.

Jesus the all powerful saves. The sun does not exist. I do not see it currently therefore it does not exist

Religion?. Interesting that this book is in the religion and spirituality section since its message is clearly quite the opposite. Also interesting that atheists fight so hard to disprove the One and Only God that they say doesn't exist. It makes my heart sad to read the good reviews of this book. It speaks no truth.

Beware Christians. Logic is required.. Christopher Hitchens was one of the greatest minds of our time and I was sad to hear of his passing. Growing up with many pastors in my family I was raised a Christian but I found it hard to blindly believe in this morally corrupt framework. As long as you are willing to set aside your preconceived notions about religion you will greatly enjoy this read.

Wonderfully inspiring!. The best book I have read in a long time. Christopher Hitchens was an extremely well spoken and intelligent debater- and an even better writer. True to himself to the very end. He is dearly missed in the atheist - and freethinker community. I am hooked and cannot wait to read all o his publications. Inspirational!

Thought provoking. “God is not Great” is thought provoking and erudite, rich with humor and insight, and beautifully written with a very light touch. Reading Hitchens will make a better person out of you.

Great Book! Just confirms the obvious.. Thank "god" for Christopher Hitchens! This book puts religion into perspective and really confirms how I've felt for years. I have a problem with people who refuse to question anything and really put their faith to the test. It seems that common sense, intelligence, and self reliance have no place in any religion. The best thing we humans can do for our future, is let our children think for themselves and not perpetuate the fairy tales. The sad thing is, If I lived in another country or even a few hundred years ago, I could be put to death for what I've said above. QUESTION EVERYTHING!

Hurts. Why did you put the title with a picture of Mother Theresa... That the kind of audience you want to attract? You couldn't find another way to do it?

Horrible. Horrible! Provides no evidence whatsoever. Dr. William Lane Craig has way better proof/evidence that actually makes sense!

Awesome. This book has all great reasons to not be religious and how it is terrible.

A free citizen of the World. A free citizen of the world is an eternal citizen of Hell. I am 23, I have researched God from all aspects. To prove/disprove Him is useless with books alone. It wasn't until I searched for Him that I found Him. My life has been changed. God is amazing. He has been answering my prayers and guiding my life. It has been an awesome ride to find Him and trust Him. God is real. No man or book can explain Him away. Take a minute and truly seek Him through prayer. Seek Him and you will find Him.

Superb and incisive.. I bought this book in physical and electronic formats. The brutally deft edge with which Hitchens cleaves faith from any semblance of logic is more of a standard and a necessity every day. At least in The United States. We’re not all lunatics.

My new favorite book. believers and non-believers alike should read this book all the way through. Most critical reviews did not even read the book! but you should read this through with an open mind

Who are the real barbarians?. Hitch elucidates on his atheism and makes a strong case for it using humor, intelligence, frankness, peerless research, and a rich lexicon that had me reaching for a dictionary more than once! This was my first, but by no means final, experience of the writing of the late lamented Christopher Hitchens. I enthusiastically recommend it to all of like-mind, and to the Faithful who wish to explore another perspective (or to test their convictions against the cool reasoning of an enlightened but thoroughly God-less mind.) A very satisfying and thought-provoking read.

God is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens. Absolutely great content -- for that I would recommend it to all. However, I bought the audiobook and discovered that Mr. Hitchens should stick to the writing and hire an accomplished narrator to deliver his genius. Mr. Hitchens speech was too fast in parts, totally unintelligble in some; in general, it was a sub-par spoken performance. Hire someone, Mr. Hitchens. The content was so wonderful, I would have paid more because I just want to understand it All!

Christianity. God is real no matter what anybody says. He sent His only son Jesus Christ to die for our sins. The truth is that no matter how far away you try to run from God you can never escape His over whelming love for us. If you confess with you mouth and believe Jesus is Lord you WILL be saved. Your name will be placed in the Lambs book of life and you will be able to go to Heaven forever and ever.

God isn't great, but this book is. Eloquent, sharp, intelligent, and full of that charming Hitchens wit. I loved this book for its unapologetic view of religion and the men that created it. A must read for anyone; especially those who are new to atheism / freethinking or those who are questioning their faith or just reality in general.

Right on point if thinking is the name of the game.. The book is well written with each argument being backed up by solid examples and blinding COMMON SENSE. Reading an opinion of a thought provoking free thinking well spoken man and then comparing that to people mindlessly repeating "God is great because the Bible told me" is really no comparison at all. If you consider yourself a "thinker" this a must have title.

Perposterous!. God is alive and living inside of us! God loves you and is not a religion.

Will read this book!. Listen I’m a Christian based on my own research and not on “blind faith”. ( that means I read books other than the Bible for evidence!) However since you guys are really avid about me reading this and giving as much unbiase as possible. However, I dont think a man that worships himself as well as other atheists should be bashing religion and questioning all of morality. But that’s just my opinion.

this book makes me sad. i am fourteen years and have been a christian since i was nine years old. my faith and view of the world has only been growing since then. when i heard about this book, it made me sad, because it’s wrong. it’s so wrong! what really gets me is, how can anyone look at the world we live in, look at how complex the human body is, and think that there isn’t a good creator?

The truth. To all of you that say there's no God. But then you say there's a hell. God created lucifer known as the angel of light. When he betrayed God, God made hell for him as his kingdom. So if there's a hell, theres a Heaven too!!! Think about this, when people are in a predicament, the first thing that comes out there mouth is help me God... Think about that!! Jesus said " Father forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing" To all you none believers God bless you!!

Amazing. In the middle of reading this book I just so happened to get a news alert text telling me of Hitchens passing. It seemed to make his words more poignant. He seems to crush every and any argument that religion is a good force in the world and backs it up with ample examples. His style of writing and amazing grasp of the English language is also another great reason to pick this book up!

Enlightening and Honest. Hitchens throws light on the ugly and illogical aspects of religion in this provocative work. I was myself brought up the victim of brutish indoctrination, forced to sit through passionate sermons of fire and brimstone - threatened with the notion of hell almost daily. It is child abuse to tell a child that the world works this way. I escaped those chains long ago, but Hitchens (also Dawkins and Harris) are among the few who successfully illustrate the ridiculousness of religious dogma. In reading this book, it becomes clear that religion is a morally bankrupt enterprise. Is it not morally contemptible to perform a good deed merely because you think some creator will reward you with eternal bliss? This seems to undermine genuine concern for others. Adults don't need to be threatened or rewarded for doing the right thing and it's an insult to our humanity to be thought of in this way. Do you really believe that there is a God that would create us sick, and command us to be well on threat of eternal damnation? Also, if a God is the lawgiver, the judge and jury, then why did there have to be blood sacrifice to forgive sins? This is incoherence at its best. Ladies and gentlemen, consider the possibility that perhaps your parents simply recommended you a poor and outdated book. Life can still be beautiful and have a deep meaning without religious madness. I encourage you to read this book!

Yes yes yes. This book should be read in classrooms across the world...

Horrible. Upsetting

Awesome read. This book is awesome. A great read. Hitchen's breaks down his arguments into several major topics that organized religion affects humans. Topics like: human sexuality, health, diet, murder, religious organization pursuit for temporal power, religions pursuit for proof (when doing so counters the basis that religion is based on FAITH - so it shouldn't be searching/needing proof), and many more. They say that no good argument is good is sound without knowing the other side's argument. If you are one o the faithful read this. If you aren't one of the 'faithful' read this anyway and know how religion has played a role in human history. This book... 5 stars.

Great!!!. If you have your reservations about religion and like to hold on to them, then this book is not for you! It makes you question everything you've come to know about religion, all regions, and then takes you to a place where the saying "ignorance is bliss" is invaluable, if of course you value THAT "ignorance"

Horrible. Isn't well written and doesn't really accept the other side of religious. Should at least make a counter argument.

Inspired by the negative reviews!. I thought about buying this book because of the great reviews, but actually bought this because of the negative reviews! The stupid religious reviews that had no argument - just God is alive, or whatever...LOL
