Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith Book Summary

In a country ruled by fear, no one is innocent.

Stalin's Soviet Union is an official paradise, where citizens live free from crime and fear only one thing: the all-powerful state. Defending this system is idealistic security officer Leo Demidov, a war hero who believes in the iron fist of the law. But when a murderer starts to kill at will and Leo dares to investigate, the State's obedient servant finds himself demoted and exiled. Now, with only his wife at his side, Leo must fight to uncover shocking truths about a killer-and a country where "crime" doesn't exist.

Compelling. Smith conveys the chilling reality of living in a state of constant mistrust. One misstatement and your life could be turned into a living hell. Even worse you would be forced to endanger others to save yourself...all to glorify the State and perpetuate its myth. . The darkness of the Soviet experience would seem to make for a dismal read were it not for the intriguing mystery surrounding the deaths of so many young children In spite of all the darkness, hope emerges. It is a compelling read that gives one pause about the direction country is taking

Stays interesting. The author is good at raising the stakes and keeping all the thread interesting. The serial kill plot line isn't as front and center as you might think it would be, but it's to the writer's credit that I couldn't stop reading anyway. Pick this one up

Mind bending. Not for the faint of heart by any means. It’s a tough story, and I haven’t educated myself enough on Stalin’s reign to speak on the validity of what happens in this story, but WOW. There is something to be said for fighting for a just cause but this book takes to to a whole other level. If you’re looking for characters that are willing to lay everything they have, no matter how little, on the line in the pursuit of a government that operates on integrity, look no further because this book is phenomenal

Terrific book!. Read half of this book one night, could not WAIT to get home the next day and finish it! Amazing and horrible details about Stalin's Russia, and a gripping mystery as well. I'd recommend this book to anyone and everyone, absolutely thrilling!

Exceptional. Mesmerizing. Smith takes the reader to a place and time - post-stalinist Russia - and makes it seem so vivid that I felt I had lived there.

Fun :). Shows how scary the thought of Communism can be. Great novel and keeps you swiping pages constantly. Interesting intro in how he uses microcosms to introduce the bigger picture.

Fast read. Got this book based of other reviews. Great read.

Anyone who values freedom should read Child 44!. There are those in the West who have romanticized totalitarianism and even fantasized about living in such a society. Child 44 will destroy that notion. Fear, terror and paranoia dominated life in Nazi Germany and communist Russia for everyone. Freedom is our greatest gift in America, and Child 44 will never let you forget it. Great read!

Child 44. Great view into Stalinist russia through the lens of fiction.

Very Well Done. First and foremost, the story works. It moves along at a good pace, and I found myself wanting more at the end of each chapter (a good thing!) There's enough description to get a good feel for the environments and characters, but not too much which gets distracting and tiresome. So...strong plot, well-developed characters, good pacing, and a good ending.

A Great Read, If a Little Hard to Stomach. This book was absolutely worth the read, and 4 years after reading it I still reflect back on the plot. It handles many somewhat taboo subjects, especially for suburban Americans, with grace and tact… but never looses its thrillar roots—anything BUT! I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys thrillars which are not just blood and gore, although there will be some of this too.

Child44. Loved this book. Great story, very well developed. Learned so much about post war Russia.

A Good, if not uniformly great, First Novel. Fans of (unrelated) Martin Cruz Smith will see a prototypical Arkady Renko in the form of Leo Demidov, respected rising star of Stalin's fearsome MGD. Like Renko, a series of grisly murders, coupled with official incompetence and malevalence, conspire to turn a paragon of Soviet Manhood into a reluctant. and persecuted, hero. Tom Rob Smith's plot is full of the sort of twists and turns that characterize the best thrillers. But this novel falls slightly short in some important areas: We are given no motive for the implacable hatred of Demidov's office rival. Some of the escapes seem somewhat implausible. And, in some minor areas, the author's relatively scant research shows through: A subway station uses a name it wasn't given until 1990 - some thirty seven years after the events in the plot. The protagonist's wristwatch uses a brand name unknown at the time.. Details add to the richness of the story - but they need to be right. Minor stylistic complaints: Most of the dialog seems stilted. Too many characters share last names with famous Russian historical figures (I could have accepted a Zhukov. But a Zinoviev too? This is the sort of laziness I expect from Tom Clancy.) Tom Rob Smith's Demidov lacks the dry wit of Martin Cruz Smith's Renko, and in some ways this is the books greatest failing. We can accept fictional monsters, but there must be some human spark beneath the Stalinist skin, no matter what horrors the character has endured. Tom Rob Smith's plotting, pacing, and story are outstanding. A rivetting story that will keep you guessing until the last chapter is indeed a pearl beyond price in today's thriller market. One hopes that Mr Smith will continue to improve as a writer, improving the mechnics and details, the sort of polishing that turns promise and story into literary greatness.

Child 44. Forget your typical thriller. This book takes you into postWWII Russia where everything is good---unless you disagree with the state. Great book! Very thought-provoking. Is Utopia possible?

Very well put together. I'll admit that I did not have high expectations when I bought this novel. I don't usually use word of mouth with books because it depends on the person, but when my friend told me that this was a amazing book I gave it a try. I was thoroughly amazed how good this book was! At first, the story doesn't seem to mesh all that well, but as you progress other things come into play and everything clicks. When that happens the story becomes incredibly engrossing and you can't help but get sucked in to it. I gave this book a 5 because overall the characters seem so lifelike and real that you can't help but fall in love with them. The final sequence seems like it belongs on a drama rather than a page of a novel. I am starting the next book in the series the secret speech with high hes.

Simply awesome!. The most interesting and unique story I've read in a long time. Makes you thankful to live in the US.

Amazing read!. There are so many surprising twists and turns in this book, I simply couldn't put it down. Vivid, intriguing characters, all set in a Soviet backdrop unfamiliar to a Western reader, making it even more engaging! I highly enjoyed it...

Wow. Might be my favorite book of the last 20 years. Spectacular. I even cried twice which is unheard of. Well done!

Pick this up.. A gripping tale that is worthy of your time. If you’ve just been considering it, stop and pick this one up.

Child 44. I have the actual book in hardcover. This is a great book. Amazing. Nothing else can describe this glorious thriller.

Incredible!!. Although the book starts out a bit confusing at the beginning, the book is a must read! Instantly became my favorite book I have ever put my hands on. I'm not a big reader but this book may have changed that. The way all the stories tie together at the end is incredible. I can't say enough about this book other than thank you Tom Rob Smith!!!

Great book with a questionable ending. Child 44 is a fantastic book. It is a dark story with exciting suspense. I loved it until the ending. This was one of the strongest novels I have read in awhile, but the last 50 pages failed to meet my expectations. I won't give anything away, but it is a strangely happy ending for a dark story. Still READ it!

Wow. I usually don't write reviews for books but this book was a complete change of pace. I wish there was more, because my mind kept wondering what happens next. Well done author.

Excellent and different.. A great thriller with real characters. Read it.

Child 44. This book gives a glimpse into the unknown world of Russia in the fifties. I could not stop reading, it just stuck to my heart and mind. Child 44 is easy to follow, full of interesting scenes, and very hard to pit down. This is a sad story of life run by the state. Read, learn, beware.

Regret. regert didnt manage to get the ibook when it was 2.99.... was considering to buy, later forgot abt it... now the price went up so much... really regert it when saw so many positive reviews tat this is a really good book... hopefully the price will go down again soon...

Child 44. This is my absolute favorite book. I have read it more than once and it never disappoints. I highly recommend it.

Great, walk away if you're looking for a beach read. I enjoyed this novel more and more as I read on. The way everything started to connect wasn't forced but nice and smooth, unexpected at times. I do wish Vasili's motives were explained further.

Great. Great story, sense of period

Fantastic. Same as most other reviews...engrossing from cover to cover. Background details are as riveting as the central plot.

Took a chance loved it. Outside of my usual genre. But WOW. Getting the secret speech now. Literally read this in 3 days with my normal life.

Heavy reading. I read a couple of chapters. Not my kind of books but the story seems very interesting for its kind.

Child 44. Couldn't put this book down!

Fantastic read!. I loved this book. I found myself reading well into the night I couldn't put it down. Stalinist Russia is so intriguing and Leo is a character you both love and hate. I enjoyed this book so much I had to read "the Speech" also by Tom Rob Smith where Leo's story continues! The price is a steal too!

Child 44. Very good storyline. Absolutely chilling in parts.

Amazing book, very well written. Great book, the whole story is really mysterious and suspenseful, with great character development.

Great!!. A must read!!!

Surprised it's free would pay for this book.. It is a well written. You feel for the characters very quickly. I couldn't put it down.

Child 44. One of the best books that I have read in a while. You really feel the environment, the dynamics, and are pulled into the time and the characters. I feel for them. Gripping!

Excellent read. Reads very well and has an original setting and protagonist for a mystery novel.
