Daemon by Daniel Suarez Book Summary

Daniel Suarez’s New York Times bestselling debut high-tech thriller is “so frightening even the government has taken note” (Entertainment Weekly).

Daemons: computer programs that silently run in the background, waiting for a specific event or time to execute. They power almost every service. They make our networked world possible. But they also make it vulnerable...

When the obituary of legendary computer game architect Matthew Sobol appears online, a previously dormant daemon activates, initiating a chain of events that begins to unravel our interconnected world. This daemon reads news headlines, recruits human followers, and orders assassinations. With Sobol’s secrets buried with him, and as new layers of his daemon are unleashed, it’s up to Detective Peter Sebeck to stop a self-replicating virtual killer before it achieves its ultimate purpose—one that goes far beyond anything Sebeck could have imagined...

Apple re-release strikes again.. So tired of Apple putting out re-releases under the guise of new releases. They MUST clearly supply the original as well as the new.

Outstanding!!!. The perfect blend of tech, mystery and morality! Keep ‘em coming!!

A Must Read for Everyone!. This book, and the follow-up "Freedom" is a great story of the unseen force that technology has on our world. A great read for IT and non-IT folks. I hope Mr. Suarez continues to write many books with this style and energy. To the negative reviewer who states the book was not finished, please go read "Freedom" and amend your review. I think you'll be quite satisfied.

Excellent Techno-Thriller. A good fast read that technology, game buffs, and law enforcement (yes, the PoPo) will enjoy. Tells a story of just how interconnected and vulnerable finance, industry, and government really are when faced with a powerful megalomaniacal adversary. Good book... you will enjoy it!

Sharp writing. Story moves very quickly, hard to put it down. Great characters. Suarez is brilliant.

Great Thriller. I wasn't able to put the book (iPad) down. The story kept my thoughts running as I tried to guess what Sobol's daemon was going to do next. It's a must read for all tech enthusiasts.

Daemon. Good book, especially considering the tech exists today. Beautiful vision of augmented reality! You can tell it is his first book but that made it even more fun to read.

Amazing!!!. This book is amazing! For the reviewer who was disappointed in the ending and thought that it left many questions unanswered, there is a sequel titled "Freedom".

This is book ONE of a two book series!. Excellent book!! The target audience for this is definitely gamers, computer programmers, and techies but anyone who likes a fast paced action thriller will enjoy this. Please keep in mind that this is a two book series. After you finish reading Daemon, go pick up Freedom-TM for the conclusion!

Perfect Sci-fi Thriller. One of my all time favorite sci-fi thrillers. Awesome tech writing!

I have re-read this book at least 5 times by now.. And it is excellent every time.

Loved this book.. Very fun book.

Great book. I would recommend this book to anyone, it is a thrilling story that both I as a IT person, and my not so tech savvy mum can enjoy.

A great read. Think Google Glass is cool? Wait until you dive into this well written tale of the near future. A gripping story line where you realize just how much technology is around you and the potential for abuse and/or societal change.

Wow!. With 25 plus years in IT this story should not be believable to me... yet sleep eludes me!

Fantastic book. I loved it and am looking forward to the sequel - purchasing it now! And I am in no way a bot written to compose good reviews for this book.

Thriller sci-fi. My favorite thriller of all times. If you like technology and twisting thrillers this book is it. Think of this book as reading something comparable to seeing The Matrix for the first time. F!

Favorite sci-fi novel of all time. I’m a sci-fi junkie. This is my favorite novel. Creative use of tech, spooky predictive elements (although perhaps outdated now), excellent character development, brilliant human + tech evolution.

Great book. Very interesting book.

Fantastic. As a software engineer and gamer myself this book hit its mark in so many ways. Daniel Suarez doesn't pull punches when employing his, verbose, technical prowess. Where many authors rely on the readers' the suspension of disbelief, even those educated in the field of technology will find that Mr. Suarez rarely takes that route. Instead he somehow scales that suspension of disbelief for those who don't understand the concepts and explains concepts in detail for those who do. Many times this is done through character development. As the world he describes is our own, those who don't understand need to have the situation described to them by those who do, in story. One of the best books I've read I a long time.

Massively entertaining while frighteningly plausible.. Daemon is a masterfully constructed tale of a possible future that hits brilliantly on many levels... socio-economic, technological, gamer culture, and even manages to grab you emotionally without going overboard or being cheesy. This guy is hip, smart, technically savvy, and most importantly wildly entertaining. It's been a while since I have been totally engulfed in a new world with new concepts and a new style like Suarez's. I'm going to dive into the sequel immediately!

Outstanding Potential...Awful Follow-Through. The Good: The plot has an excellent premise, the background elements and description are solid, and the technical references and concepts are both accurate and intriguing. There are enough subplots and intertwined events to make it a real page-turner. And, most gratifyingly, unlike many novels over the past decade, both the character development and dialog are strong and believable. I was really drawn into the story. The Bad: The book is only 80 percent complete! At the end of the book there are so many unanswered questions, loose threads and dangling subplots that you're left gasping for a sequel---or at least a two paragraph epilogue. It's like the writer reached the last chapter and decided that he'd done enough to get it published so he gave it a limp, half-hearted last minute wrap-up. I almost wish that the whole book had been poorly written so that I wasn't left so empty handed at the end. Daemon is worth reading, so long as you keep your expectations low as you move through it. You WILL be left unfulfilled.

Unbelievably good. I read that this is his first book. I can't believe that. This book is so good, so real, so well written, that he must have Sobol's help. Even if you don't understand all the computer language, it's fantastic.

Well, someone touched on reality in their fiction. Many of the ideas outlined in this book are now becoming reality. Great book.
