Predictably Irrational, Revised and Expanded Edition by Dr. Dan Ariely Book Summary

The groundbreaking bestseller from iconic behavioral psychologist Dan Ariely, now the inspiration for the Fall 2023 NBC show The Irrational

“A marvelous book that is both thought provoking and highly entertaining, ranging from the power of placebos to the pleasures of Pepsi. Ariely unmasks the subtle but powerful tricks that our minds play on us, and shows us how we can prevent being fooled.” — Jerome Groopman, New York Times bestselling author of How Doctors Think

“Ariely is a genius at understanding human behavior: no economist does a better job of uncovering and explaining the hidden reasons for the weird ways we act, in the marketplace and out. Predictably Irrational will reshape the way you see the world, and yourself, for good.” — James Surowiecki, author of The Wisdom of Crowds

Why do our headaches persist after we take a one-cent aspirin but disappear when we take a fifty-cent aspirin? Why do we splurge on a lavish meal but cut coupons to save twenty-five cents on a can of soup?

When it comes to making decisions in our lives, we think we're making smart, rational choices. But are we? In this revised and expanded edition of the groundbreaking New York Times bestseller, Dan Ariely refutes the common assumption that we behave in fundamentally rational ways. From drinking coffee to losing weight, from buying a car to choosing a romantic partner, we consistently overpay, underestimate, and procrastinate. Yet these misguided behaviors are neither random nor senseless. They're systematic and predictable—making us predictably irrational.

Amazing!!!. I've read it 3 times such a great book!

Great read!. I love studying people and this book touched on a lot of subjects that I've thought about.

Predictably Irrational. Wow - A definite MUST READ! Excellent insight supported by real world research in an easy to read format. I read a lot and Predictably Irrational is my pick of the year.

Amazing. Eye opening book. Enjoyed every word

Summer Reading. I was required to read this book for my summer reading at my high school. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! I would (and have) recommend this book to anyone. 

For curious and business executives alike. Review: Predictably Irrational I myself am a walking contradiction. I'm a business major with an art-based constitution who has a more than mild interest in psychology and sociology. So, naturally, after seeing the free excerpts thoughtfully entitled, A Taste of Irrationality, I was hooked. I burned through the five chapters quickly and moved on to this book, Predictably Irrational. While I do think a lot of his research is extraordinarily attune to how so many people are overlooking ethics in their own lives, I also thought that some chapters may not always apply the way he thinks. However, I think his overall goal is just to make people think about themselves and take notice of the fact that we are constantly making excuses for ourselves. I think anyone who has an interest in psychology or sociology, would like to learn concepts to help their company grow, would like to grow as a person, or would just enjoy a different view than their own; should spend their hard-earned money for the hours of satisfaction you'll get from the following pages. If you're not ready for that commitment, go check out the free excerpts and decide for yourself.

HK. A book filled with interesting yet simple experiments supporting the claim of our irrational behavior. Definitely gives a better insight of how we make decisions all the time......... Warning: The insight probably won't be something that most of us will feel proud of!

Brilliant!!. One of The best books I have ever read I love his writing style

Stop right here! You need to read this book!. You have 3 choices: 1. Buy another book that may not be that interesting or informative. 2. Buy this book that is full of amazing insights and knowledge. Even if you never read it. You’ll always have it available. Or 3. Buy this book that is full of amazing insights and knowledge. Read and learn these insights. Then use that knowledge to make informed decisions on just about everything you do. I purchased this book from a suggested reading list for copywriters. But only three chapters in and the realization that — this information is invaluable to everyone is overwhelming. If you have ever wondered why we we make the decisions we do — get this book!

Practically iratioanl. Excellent book

Kindle version cheaper. As of right now, this book is $2.99 in the kindle store.

Love it. Great eye opener

Predictably outstanding. Ariely has a talent of presenting human behavior in the most simplistic and clear manner, which helps drive the point home. I enjoyed reading the various behavioral cases outlined in the book and I highly recommend it to anyone. Although I agree with Ariely that consumer behavior is predictable, I would argue that the behavior is rational because there is always a reason behind every decision we make. In my book, Money Anxiety – how financial anxiety impacts consumer behavior and the economy, I show how consumer behavior is influenced by their level of financial anxiety, and that there is always a reason (rationality) to each decision.

Un libro que te asombrará página x página.. Me encanto entender mas sobre las formas de actuar de personas educadas, y no faltas de recursos y cómo pueden cometer errores q afectan a todos por causa de los detalles que manejan nuestra percepción!

Predictably irrational. In spite of other rave reviews and my personal affection for Gladwell books, I found this book labored with obvious and poorly executed "experiments" which were more like self fulfilling prophesies. The author's conclusions and interpretations plus his philosophical discussions on how he envisions rationality were often devoid of real life influences. Clearly many real life situations are influenced by more than "rational" thinking, but life is never simply heads or tails. Similarly, this book certainly contains some interesting observations about human nature. Do people lie and cheat sometimes?? Sure. Are there outside forces that temper these outcomes? Of course. Do people expect and consider that others lie and cheat? Sure. Are these revelations shocking or even surprising? I don't think so. For these reasons, namely the lack of new insights, I found the book disappointing. For the courage however to compile and publish these results I must congratulate the author.

Great book. This book helps explain why we do what we do. It gives us great insight into how we think and why we behave the way we do.
