My Stroke of Insight by Jill Bolte Taylor Book Summary

"Transformative...[Taylor's] experience...will shatter [your] own perception of the world."—ABC News

The astonishing New York Times bestseller that chronicles how a brain scientist's own stroke led to enlightenment

On December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven- year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist experienced a massive stroke in the left hemisphere of her brain. As she observed her mind deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life-all within four hours-Taylor alternated between the euphoria of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace, and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized she was having a stroke and enabled her to seek help before she was completely lost. It would take her eight years to fully recover.

For Taylor, her stroke was a blessing and a revelation. It taught her that by "stepping to the right" of our left brains, we can uncover feelings of well-being that are often sidelined by "brain chatter." Reaching wide audiences through her talk at the Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference and her appearance on Oprah's online Soul Series, Taylor provides a valuable recovery guide for those touched by brain injury and an inspiring testimony that inner peace is accessible to anyone.

Excellent. I read this book and help me to understand my brain and how it works. Jill Bolte Taylor transport me to feel all that she pass through the stroke. love the book.

Mr.. Great book, as I struggle with MS, this book provides ideas on how to utilize my brain to help me cope. It also provides hope that I can heal and improve!!! Thank you Jill Sincerely, Jeff

Wow. I barely read the first chapter and it had me wanting to write a review about the book. I'm currently at Barne's and I was intrigued and wanting to read more, already. I'm definitely leaving with this book tonight.

Powerful. Just amazing and wonderful book!

Life changer. I have unknowingly been a left brain thinker all my life. Since this book I have been living in a different world by trying to use just right brain thinking. I can now do things that I could never do before, because of fear. My right brain does not understand what fear is, And I love it!

this book is life changing.. One of the best books I have ever read . A must read for all that want to be healthy

Must read for spiritual journey. my stroke of insight provides a scientific basis for how the human brain processes in an understandable manner. in doing so, the book reinforces experiences in meditation and similar spiritual experiences by explaining how they may occur physiologically.

What a gift Dr. Taylor has given us!. I'm so glad I read this book for many reasons. The first is that both my parents are 85 years old and heaven forbid that one of them would have a stroke, but I feel I would be equipped to understand quite a bit of what is going on and hopefully help them out. Also, I'm now totally fascinated how our two hemispheres work separately and together -- what an incredible organ this brain of ours is! I think my favorite aspect of the book is the realization that we really do have control over our thoughts and the energy we send out in the world. This book has made a huge impact on me and I'm already practicing her instructions for controlling my willful left hemisphere. I'm sorry Dr. Taylor had to experience a stroke, but what an incredible gift she's given the medical world, patients and their families, and the rest of us. If you make the wise decision to read this book, make sure you read Chapters 2 & 3. You'll find out why.

Great personal account. I am a college student pursuing occupational therapy. I thought this book was well-written because it not only touched on the physiological mechanisms behind the author’s stroke and recovery, but also the psychological side. I found the author’s perspective about the left and right hemispheres to be interesting, considering she is founded in “hard science.” A great read!

My Stroke of Insight. Just the word "stroke" sends chills up my spine. My heart races at the thought of having a stroke or thinking about someone I know who has had a stroke and what they went through. But Dr. Jill Taylor literally walks us through her stroke, educating us along the way and teaching us how to help others and ourselves. Taylor's knowledge of the brains, both left and right, helps the reader better understand the roles our brains play and how to utilize ours more effectively to live our own lives more joyously. Although this book is certainly serious, it is also uplifting. After reading it, my own fear of death lessened, and a sense of calm enveloped me. My views of life were reaffirmed by Dr.Taylor's explanations, leaving me with a sense that all is right with the world...and joy and peace are possible after all.

Helpful Insights. As a caregiver for a family member who had a hemorrhagic stroke on the right side, this book did provide some helpful insights into the process of healing. It also suggested approaches to reduce fear and anxiety and to properly sequence the learning tasks.

WOW. Amazing book. I had a very minor stroke at 37 and this book was fascinating to me. I could definitely relate to some of the experiences Dr. Taylor related. I also appreciated learning more about our amazing brains and how they work. I have recommended this book to numerous friends and family members.

Great insight on the brain and thoughts. Great book.

Stroke of Insight. An amazing story of a world we can only imagine...the mind inside of a stroke survivor, and not just any survivor, a neuroscientist who studied brains. Everyone should read this book, for themselves, and for their friends and loved ones.

Loving My Brain. I am so amaze how powerful my brain can be. In this manner, I want to love it more with all my heart. Thanks a lot, Jill! Kharen

Absolutely Wonderful!!!. I had a stroke a year and a half ago. So many things were going on that I didn't understand, and still don't, and a friend recommended this book. Now so many things make sense and are falling into place. I've read this book from cover to cover and it has helped me understand the changes in my brain a lot better. This book should be read by anybody who has a brain! This book is written so that it is easy and inspiring to read, especially for those of us who've had a stroke. It should be required reading for anyone who works on the rehab ward with patients who have brain injury. I was on acute rehab for nearly a month, and only one person treated me like a baby. It was humiliating, but she was removed when my doctor found out. If she had read this book, she'd know that we were just injured and not stupid. Thank you, Jill Bolte Taylor for writing this book. I'm telling everyone who will listen that they need to read It. I am overcome with great emotion from your compassion to the readers of this book.

Wonderful book. Stroke victim or not, anybody who reads this book can benefit from the positive, peaceful and compassionate outlook Dr. Jill Taylor so masterfully describes in this intimate journey into her recovering brain.

Story. Powerful story. As a caregiver whom specializes in bringing hope to hopeless, it gave me great insight on how better care for my people. Thank you for inspirational story.

Too text booky. I am a Physical Therapist and read this book for the patient perspective aspect. The relatively brief account of the acute stroke was absolutely the best part of the book and I am so glad that she was willing to relive these details in print. As a clinician who treats stroke survivors and their families, I appreciated the appendices as well. The story would best be told as a short story in a magazine like Reader's Digest. At the beginning of the book I found myself saying, "get to the morning of the stroke already". By the end of the book, I felt like the author was perseverating on the right hemisphere concept, saying the same thing over and over again. I did not even bother to read the last 20 pages for this reason as every spot check revealed repitition of her fascination with the right hemisphere. I was looking for more detail about her acute stroke deficits. While the book was clear that her main issues were language and memory, there was some indication that she initially had motor deficit as well. However, she was discharged home after only 5 days. Also curious why the surgery was not done immediately. I would only recommend the middle of this book.

What a read, life changing!. This is an amazing book, real life experience confirming the role of the right brain. You get to see if from the inside out. Well written and fun to read. Believe it or not, it's a page turner!

Insights into the Brain. Excellent presentation. I know now more about how my son is feeling! Makes me sad that I had not read this sooner, so I could help him more. He was age forty, when he had 2 massive strokes within 10 days. Today at forty three he makes the most of what he has with government subsidies.

Meh…. Redundant, redundant… not hworth a book, reads like a padded People magazine article.

Similar Story. I read this book because I too suffered a hemorrhagic stroke due to an undetected Cerebral AVM. I was interested in Dr. Taylor's recovery journey and how she shares her story with other stroke survivors. For me, there was some very useful information, but too much time devoted to her efforts of reinventing her brain.

My stroke of insight. Nice balance between science and personal experience. Very engaging

My Stroke of Insight. This is a must read for anyone or family that has a stroke survivor. We have been both blessed and inspired by this book. We are using the 40 things that you should know. It is helping us understated why understanding the stroke is important .

My stroke of Insight. Magnificent!!! A life- changer indeed.
