Amazing introduction to a series. This book blasts into action from the very start, setting a pace that lets you know immediately what to expect later. Jonas Valent and his crew are a diverse group of people from the outset, and they have been running training simulations for months behind the backs of the authorities. Of course, this wouldn't be a problem if they weren't beating every simulation, the academy students, and the creators of the simulations themselves. What happens in the simulations sets them up for the mission of a lifetime. It's just a pity that many of the crew from the simulations are either civilians, or retired from active service. Not that that's going to stop the authorities from putting those skills to work in the most unusual proposition any of them will ever hear.

Hook, line and sinker. I downloaded this book quite a while ago and it sat on my iPad even longer. In fact, it almost got deleted before I read it. I was usually too busy or just not interested at any given time. Then I started a long road trip and figured there is no better time then now to read it. Glad I did! I enjoyed every page of this book. The character development was fun and enjoyable. I look forward to what Jonas and company have in store through the rest of the series.

Confused genre !!. It is understood that creating a storyline isn't easy but using such lazy escape scenarios to make things happen in a magical fashion in a Sci-Fi novel is just too cheap. Too bad, the story line and writing is good and skillful. However, the suspense has been taken away by the unrealistic escape routes!!

What a frontier. This space story is like a history of space travel. The different worlds, beings and science combine in a unique flavor to tell what this life could be like. I loved reading this book and look forward to reading others in this series.

Much better than I expected. With a free book you never know what you are going to get. This one was a surprising homerun. It's not perfectly polished (some difficulty tracking who is speaking and some rough phrasing at times) it is still a riveting and enjoyable read. I hate to say this because it is kind of cheese but I really couldn't put it down. Fun book.

Omg. I read this book over three days. I have read many many books and this one was an original work that combined elements from both star trek and the foundation. I was genuinely angered when the book ended and I could not continue. The first person viewpoint is refreshing and the suspense is real as we suffer along with the captain. This book was amazing. Now I need to go catch up on sleep.

Wonderful. This author has just been moved to the top shelf for me and my family joining the other greats like John Ringo, and David Weber. Please do yourself a favor and read this book then buy and read all his other ones.

I totally Loved It. The plot structure is familiar to SF readers, but i couldn't help getting sucked into this story.. It grabs you and it doesn't let go.. I want more!! Great Read

Great Story. Best book I have read in years. Fans of David Weber's Honor Harrington will love this. The main character is well developed and his crew have enough substance to follow. Game playing group that pull together and end up flying a starship, who doesn't see humor in that

Read The Whole Series. Held my interest throughout the entire series. A solid read!

Origins. Be warned, you will want to spend $26.91 (+applicable tax) if you read this book(s) because it is so good you want to continue to find out what happens to the characters you have developed a close relationship with. This is a wonderful read, character development is rich and full of depths that you find your self starting to feel emotion for them. I recommend this for anyone who likes Sci-Fi Fiction genre style books. I really started out with the Starwars universe of books and I feel that this is as good, or in some cases, a better read then some in that universe I have encountered.

Spinward Fringe Broadcast: O Orgins. A definite series bound for the movies. Get your popcorn ready because you are going to want some as you sit back and prepare to be entertained. A Sci-Fi adventure battling spaceships with advanced weaponry and highly skilled characters who seem to mesh together with their love of technology in all the levels necessary to run a futuristic spaceship against anything in the galaxy.

Spinward Fringe Origins. Wonderful sci fi journey. Amazing foresight as to what technological marvels may exist in the future. Loved the interpersonal relationships as they evolved. A very engaging book that held my interest throughout. Randolph Lalonde’s epilogue truly shows his love for writing sci fi. I plan on reading his sequels. A talented author.

Great Character Development. I highly recommend the complete series. The characters were thoroughly developed and had many arcs throughout. As others have stated, there are spelling and grammatical errors, but none so bad that it takes you completely out of the story. Read it, you won't regret it!

I'm so glad there are more in this series!. I was hooked after four pages! The adventure, the depth of the characters, the action just drew me in like a black hole! I loved reading this ebook and overjoyed that it's just first of many. It's reminiscent of the TV show Firefly but with So much more action and interaction of heroes and bad guys. I'm grateful to read this story in exchange for honest review.

Spinward Fringe 0. Great book, had a hard time putting it down, didn't expect it to end the way that it did. Very believable future. Now I have to continue reading the rest of the series.

Repetitive corporate report?. Mr. Lalonde adopts his Spinward milieu, originally a novella serial into this long-form trilogy format. Unfortunately, instead of crafting a new and cohesive novel, Origins reads like he stacked the novellas in order and shipped it off. The story restarts itself seemingly with each chapter. For example, the leader, Jonas, is amazed that his crew has learned to work together so quickly. Then he is the same amount of amazed again. Then again, and again. He's too young to be loosing his memory. Lalonde also likes to have his characters describe the inner workings of technology in excruciating detail. Often to someone who should already know. This is not only an unwieldy if not handled judiciously, but it can robs the story of its momentum which it does. Then there is Lalonde's choice of writing in the first person. I suspect that it is supposed to sound like a Captain's Log. But in this case it is device that probably works better in his short work than it does in a full-length novel, let alone a trilogy. His writing style, coupled with everything else reminds me of an annual departmental report submitted by a self-indulgent mid level corporate manager. Dry, perfunctory, verbose, meandering. It is a shame, too, because Mr. Lalonde introduces some interesting stuff in Origins, particularly with the AI, "Alice". Unfortunately, The book is way too much work to make them worth while.

So inward Fringe. A good space opera. The author achieved his goals. This compliments the old horse operas of the old west, but with the spaceship instead of horse. Good job.

An incredible start to a terrific journey. This book was my saving grace on an ever extended flight delay stay at an airport one evening. I gave it a shot and have never looked back with regret, as the story continues to unfold and entertain. If you're interested in scifi adventure, this is the start to a great one. It's self published, and that's another great plus in my opinion.

Spinward Fringe - Origins. Love the technical language. Story flows well. Action and human interest keep the reader interested.

Entertaining. I really enjoyed the story. Even with a lot dialogue, I never got bored. It kept things going reasonably well.

Wow. I truly loved this book, it was right on the line of things I thoroughly enjoy - space opera with a meaningful story, believable characters and plausible events. The imagery is very good and I found myself immersed in the ship and environments as we journeyed. Very well done! Don't stop now - I'm on Broadcast 7 and have loved every book I've read.

Spin ward fringe origins. Good sci fi story and characters

Spinward Fringe Origins. Best Sci-Fi take I’ve read in awhile. Highly recommend.

Fast paced!. Really enjoyed the storytelling, even though the character development and dialogue wasn't great. The only well rounded character in the book was the ship itself. Found myself caring more about her damage than human character injuries. Disappointed the Alice storyline wasn't explored further, since it had such potential. Hopeful it's picked up in later books, which I will definitely be reading. Altogether an engaging read.

Much better than expected!. I don't usually like science fiction, and rarely pay for an electronic book. However, I liked this omnibus so much I will buy all the other!

Totally captivating to read. I loved this epic and look forward to reading more. I read this straight through and with much anticipation. The ending is ?cliffhanger?harsh? Saddening?......however to say it, it definitely makes you want to read the next book. Oddly, book 1 & 2 I had to separate search for as it doesn’t show up in the series. IBooks does have it you just need to type in the title spinward broadcast 1 & 2 will pull it up. Enjoy.

Well done!. As a long time scifi reader I'd enjoyed many books but found there to be an unspoken dichotomy with hard science fiction, which is heavy on the science and often ponderous for the layman reader, and the more adolescent, simple minded space opera. A regular story dressed up in a futuristic costume. Though I've just read this first installment, I think the author has bridged the gap between the two styles to create a compelling read. Already purchased the next installment .

Whoa!. As a fan of SciFi movies and tv this is actually my first book-- and I'm totally blown away! Such great characters and storyline. Every page made me want to hurry along, and yet as I neared the end I could feel anxiety creep up that this journey would be ending. Completely, utterly fantastic! I'm a lifelong fan now :)

Spinward Fringe. This book was fun to read and explored the limits of science and fiction. Would defiantly recommend to science fiction/space (the final frontier) fans.

Spinward Fringe: Origins. Very compelling sci-fi. Left me guessing where it was going until the end. Great book.

This book almost got me fired. Once I started reading this book, I could not stop. He has a solid writing style that keeps the action moving and the reader involved. This book is a solid beginning to a space opera series.

Great book!!. I really liked this book, not only for the plot, but also for the detail that is included in the story. In a lot of science fiction books, it mentions the technology but doesn't go into depth about how they work. I really liked that in this book, it mentions a lot about medical and engineering technology, like the vacsuits and the wormhole generators, not to mention all the animatter cannons and torpedoes. The detail about the AI was pretty neat as well. This explanation of technology really made the story more interesting and realistic for me. Also, I enjoy the books where you can never guess what's coming. That's also why I liked this book: it has a lot of plot twists, and is not boring and predictable. I gave this 4 stars, though, because I was dissatisfied with a couple of minor things. The characters were good, though I felt like they were too perfect, and did everything the right way, but it was tolerable and wasn't too irritating. The ending was also kind of uncomfortable. It just happened so fast, and it was such a surprise. I feel like the character involved should have talked to the others or thought about it more. However, since this book is a start to a series, I'm willing to forgive this. Nevertheless, this book was very enjoyable to read! I liked it a lot. So if you like a more realistic sci-fi world, or if you're willing to read through some technology explanations, you should definitely check out this book!!

100/10 ❤️❤️. So I found this book when I was 15 looking for a free science fiction book, because well I was 15 and broke u know. And this was 2015. After reading this book I was hooked. And I read and waited for every book after that. This book has by far been my favorite. And the best part for me is the characters. How well u know the characters and how you just feel like you’ve been with them the whole time through their struggles. And second part I Love is the deep science fiction it brings. I know all books have to end eventually but I hope this book doesn’t end for a very very long time. Gives me something to truly love to read. Thanks Randolph

Fantastic. Fantastic book and I got it for free! The only disappointment is the end, however I don't see much other alternative to ending it. I so look forward to more adventures with captain Valent.

Spinward Fringe. Exceptional space opera filled with mind blowing future tech, social commentary and a great story line. A full stand alone epic with dozens of hints for follow on readings.

Freeground. I just started reading Freeground. I love it so far. The imagery is fantastic

Great Science Fiction with Characters You Care About. Wonderful story that makes you feel you are part of the action. Written in fist person was no easy job and the story is a wonderful tale!

Omg. Yes. This, to me, ranks right up there with The Greats... Heinlein, Weber, Orson Scott Card. Holy Cow, I don't even know what to say. I read the first four in the series in two nights. I am completely hooked and am currently adjusting my household budget to buy all the rest. Having to wait to find out what happens next to the captain and crew of the First Light is tantamount to having to wait to find out if a beloved family member is going to survive a horrible accident; I'm that invested in these characters. The tech in these series is fascinating and I was actually interested in the fight scenes. All in all, this is a phenomenal series and I can't wait to continue reading!

Amazing. I love this series and all the books

Great Space Opera. I've read several really good space operas by new authors recently, but this three novella set by far is the best. I would have rated it at a 5, but it really needs a lot of editing. Generally not a problem, but it created some difficulty with dialogue and some sentence structure that was very confusing. I often found myself re-reading sentences and whole paragraphs before they made sense.

This author is a true science fiction artist!. An incredible story with amazing characters set in a fantastically advanced universe. The plot moves along perfectly through thick and thin. The characters are enjoyable and their interactions make you feel like one of them. I am now a fan, and I will be getting the next book in 45 seconds!

Excellent Reading. The best space series since Honor Harrington. Well writt, high action. Great characters and well thought plot and storytelling. Well done!

Great read. Don't miss the rest of the series. I've read the whole series, and loved every bit of it.

Amazing Series. I read this over a year ago and was hooked immediately. I'm already on Broadcast 5. The characters are well developed and their stories, individually and collectively, stir up a roller coaster of emotions. A MUST read.

Captivating. I had a difficult time putting the book down. The pace and intensity doesn’t allow it. It’s a sifi masterpiece that is truly riveting.

Lots of fluffy fun, and moving.... A great popcorn space opera, a little romance and a lot of action. Sometimes the invoked technology gets a little too magical, but it's an absorbing read. There are enough loose ends left that I want to read the next in the series. The captain's care for his crew is really pretty moving, especially at the end. Nothing really deep here, but good fun.

Starfree. The plot were so well done, I had a hard time pulling the book Down. Being a Ebook was a good CALL!

wow. It was my first ebook...and i would have paid more!! got hooked on the series and have all of them now...if you like science fiction drama you will like this

My first time!. This is the first book I have read by this author....but it is not the last! I can see that there are quite a few more books for me to download. While I was reading the book, I kept trying to imagine how the author could ever keep up with the number of characters and the various plots going on. I was devastated at the end and quickly realized it was not the end but the beginning! I heartily encourage you to read this book! Now I have to go and purchase a few more books by this author!

Origins. Good story, likeable characters that you care about, nearly put off at first because it was too much like a management manual, either the author was trying to show he had researched it, or his editor was not strong enough. Glad I persevered, interesting story line and I'll be buying the next in the series.

Can't get enough of this author. At last an author that had me yelling out for more. I couldn't put this book down once I started to read. If you like a book with characters you grow to love, adventure, suspense, comedy, and yes, even a bit of romance, then this book is for you. You just can't wait to read the next one in the series. Thankfully there are 7 more, including The Expendable Few, which I would recommend you read between books 6 and 7 to enrich your whole reading enjoyment of this series. Randy is a true story telling wizard.

Great read. One of the most enjoyable sf books I've read in a while.

Thoroughly excellent!. A brilliantly well executed space opera. Well written, well paced and full of believable characters you really feel for. And it's free! I found this through a search for Iain M Banks' Look to Windward and downloaded it on a whim. I'm glad I did. the plot is gripping, the tech and dystopian social context thought provoking; I'll definitely be buying the rest of the series. A great example of how giving something away for free can increase you profile, fanbase and earnings as a writer. Futuristic in every way.

Fantastic read!!. Great book, hard to put down. A must read for any science fiction fan.

Great book, great series. Picked this up on a whim and now consider myself lucky as I almost missed out on a very good book, so good in fact I brought the rest of the series and have just finished reading the last book this morning and I can't honestly get enough, full of characters that you'll learn to love as they grow and mature and it has plenty of highs and lows that keeps you reading until you see it's 5am and you really should go to sleep but its always a case of one more page, one more chapter! so stop reading the reviews and get the book and buy the rest of them as its an amazing adventure.

Edge of your seat stuff. I first read this book a number of years ago and I have read it and the following series a number of times now. Spinward Fringe: Origins is a fantastic baseline to gain an understanding and an insight into the world of the characters. This book is truly set apart by the authors style of writing and how characters are introduced. You really get to know each one but not in the boring, fact based point system many authors use. You connect with each one on a different level. The storyline itself is enthralling as it is nail biting and emotional. There are chapters within that could have used a little more editing and perhaps a bit more information on what we were reading. Other than this minor criticism this book and the following series are an absolute must read for any Sci Fi / Fantasy / Space Opera fan. Spaceships, space battles, planets, stations, exploration, romantic entanglements and so much more. The Spinward Fringe series and indeed Randolph Lalonde has become my favourite all time book series and Author.

Sdhil. An excellent, enjoyable read.

Fantastic. So good! Just sorry I didn't pick this up sooner.

Awesome. Such a great story, read it!

Jaw dropping. Stunning, spectacular and pure genius. This book awed me and expanded my expectations to the point where I cannot stop reading this trilogy. A must get trilogy and, as so many like I have been, if you are gripped by this books like I have been then buy the rest of the series!

Can't put it down. A great free start to a great series of books.

Origins. Simply brilliant, I couldn't stop reading it!

Great sci-fi. Really enjoying this series. Now up to "Triton", but started with this for free :-) Some great concepts and characters. Highly recommend.

Not bad. Not a bad book. A few plot lines left unfinished and felt quite naive. The prose was sometimes a little simplistic and obvious; but overall it was a good concept that could be developed into something quite good. Stephen Baxter, Peter F Hamilton: watch out.

Origins. An excellent sci-fi novel in the EE 'doc' Smith vogue; a very good storyline and enthralling development. Well written. Well worth the read.

Brilliant piece of writing.. This has got to be the best sci-fi I've read. I've never been this hooked to a series and I can't put it down. Can't praise the author enough. Now I've read origin, I've got to read the rest.

Spinwood fringe. I really enjoyed this, I downloaded it for free out of curiosity and am pleased I did. This is much 'harder' science fiction than I would usually read now, though I read a lot of sci fi at one time. I still find the techno babble a bit much but was carried away by the space opera itself. It reminds me a little of the Lensmen series. Have bought the next book and am looking foreword to more adventures, hopefully finding out what became of Alice. The book has strong female characters though does wander into stereotypes. Would make an amazing film.

Compelling. A compelling, compulsive novel and a thoroughly good read!

Origins. Wow! what an exciting book. This is the best internet book I have ever read and I look forward to reading others in the series. It was even better because it was written in proper English with English spellings. This would make a great movie. One very small point I noted was that the proof reader missed a change of character name in 2 chapters to Walker. An excellent read. Thank you.

Space Yarn. The book improves as it goes on and the main characters are interesting and likeable. The light-speed development of the ship and the technology is rather optimistic, but it does allow the battle scenes an extra credibility.

Vee. Loved it loved it loved it will be continuing the journey

Fantastic Read.. Looking forward to the next book, if it's as good as the first I'll not be disappointed.

Broadcast 0 frikkin awesome. What do I need to say that hasn't already been said This is so good a plot line it has depth and substance this is no flash in the pan Roll on the next book ( just wish I could get them at a knock down price as I'm just between jobs at the mo )

Great book!. I am Ian M Banks fan and was looking for something to fill the gap, but I think I have now found a new favourite author, and this books free... I will definitely be buying the next ones, I am loving this book.

Be ready to get hooked.... I got this free book thinking it would be a rubbish read but quickly got hooked. It is the first in the series and is a really good book with some turns that the reader will not see coming. For any sci fi fans this is a must have book and it's free - what more could we ask for!

No Spoilers.... This book was a rare find. It's been quite sometime since I've felt the urge to put pen to paper as it were, and review a book. Don't get me wrong, I've read a lot, just nothing that I believe was worth sharing at all. I think the problem for me has been that when you write, nine times out of ten you can actually see where the storyline is heading. Which seriously takes the fun out of reading your average book. Spinward Fringe, Broadcast 0: Origins is the book that gave me the urge to review once more. Quite simply, This. Book. Is. Spectacular. And it's far from your 'average' book. Yes, I do realise I just broke so many rules of the written word - suck it up and stay with me here so I can get to the point. Author Randolph Lalonde is in a class of his very own making. This book had more than your average sci-fi story going. Yes, there's a plot, but it's a damn fine plot with some fantastic plot twists. That's right, PLOT TWISTS! In a science fiction book, and not just one, but several. The first one that hit me had me reading a sentence twice! Seriously, one minute I was travelling down the path of the story, happily reading when BAM, I was hit in the back of the head by a plot twist. It happened so fast I had no time to brace myself. It almost gave me whiplash. To say that I couldn't see where the storyline was going is obvious. I was just a passenger along for the ride, and what a ride it was. You'll find Mr Lalondes writing is seamless. I didn't stumble once whilst reading books one through to three. Which reminds me, Spinward Fringe, Broadcast 0: Origins is an omnibus of three books. There's some serious swoon going on too, not to mention hero and heroine worshipping happening. You can't read it and not fall in love with some of these characters. Mr Lalonde brings them to the fore in all their diversity and gritty glory. Further, everything I read I believed. There were no silly names, or aliens that just couldn't possibly exist. Everything that was in there was feasible; put all of the above together into the seamless package it is and you can understand why I found it so thoroughly enjoyable. For those of you pedantic about such things, I found no grammatical errors, no spelling mistakes and only half a dozen typo's. (At one point it looked like my cat had done her usual tiptoe across the keyboard, as is her want - which makes me wonder, does Mr Lalonde have a cat?) Yet those few typo's still didn't manage to drag me away from my reading, because the storyline was just too strong. I was totally in the grasp of a master writer, and the book wasn't going to let me go till it was finished with me. Now that it has finished with me, I find myself drained of emotions - yet ready for more. Hope, love, fast paced action, joy, fear, camaraderie, innovation, adventure - it's all found within the 813 pages of this omnibus. Do yourself a HUGE favour, go to your favourite online bookstore and grab a copy. Go on, lose yourself for awhile. There are more books to follow, and what's more they're all available now. I love finding a complete series. NB: I found this review difficult to write without giving you spoilers, but if you've read any of my past reviews, you'll know that I do love to keep you in the dark; I want you to be able to open up that book cover and find the joy I found, without my slant on it for you. I want YOU to enjoy it as much as I did, and if I start handing out spoilers, well, where's the fun in that? I'd much rather you went into Goodreads, after you've read the book, and join in a discussion with me there. Then we can chat about it after the fact, okay? See you there. Oh, links below as ever. Enjoy! 10/10

The best SF novel I have read in 30 years!. Superlatively written. Made me feel as if I was one of the crew. Fast paced and the story line is very believable. Incredible attention to detail and formidable imagination make this book a pleasure to read.

Very enjoyable read. I don't usually read quite this type of book, and it took me a couple of chapters before I could get into it, but then I couldn't put it down. Very entertaining read and kept me interested.

Spinward Fringe. Outstanding story.. Up there with the like's of John Ringo & Orson Scott Card

Slow. Slow read, lengthy drawn out drama.

Worthy!. Wow, what can I say? I had to force myself to stop at Framework: Broadcast 7 in order to come back to Origins to leave this review. I so absolutely love this series! The richness and incredible detail of the universe and the beautiful characters that Mr Lalonde has given us to peruse has completely captivated and delighted me to no end. There are few authors out there that have managed to keep me so engrossed in their stories, and this series seems to just keep getting better and better. I dare say I will be totally heartbroken when Mr Lalonde decides that enough is enough and brings it all crashing to and! May there be many Broadcasts to come!

Outstanding. This entire series is just outstanding, i have read through it twice and it just keeps getting better! Great Job!

Greggy. Excellent, I hope this is made into a movie or tv series.

Good. I really enjoyed it, but the first book especially was a little rough. I feel the plot more than makes up for it.

Captivating Science Fiction. Finally, a book that had me reading late into the night. I was hoping it wouldn't end! The author develops the characters in a quick but believable way, this is great science fiction. Reading his description of the writing process included at the end of the book really helped me appreciate the final result. I'm off to buy the next two in the series!

Among the stars. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I'll be continuing the series!

I'll be back for more.. I'm a big science fiction fan. I've read the greats: Heinlein, Asimov, etc. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I opened this ebook. The plot is well thought out and has no holes I could notice, and the characters are engaging and relatable. This book kept me distracted from college courses for a week, and I'm still getting over the lack of sleep from late nights turning it's virtual pages. I look forward to reading the rest of his author's works, and hope for many more sleepless nights spent in the world of Spinward Fringe.

Great read!. Can't believe I picked up this gem as my first read on my iPhone. As much as the wife hated loosing me while I was immersed it was worth it!

Spinward Fringe Broadcast O: Origins. Best sifi I've read in a long time getting the rest of series soon good reading

Just read it. This was a most excellent read. As others have said I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the writing in a free book. I would change one thing; the title. In the authors note at the end he mentioned that this was the First Light Chronicles, a much grander and more suitable setup for our expectations. Keep Writing! I have bought the next in series already.

Enjoyed this book a lot. It’s hard to believe that a book of this quality was free and because of that, I didn’t expect much from it. Boy was I surprised. This book takes place in a well described, brilliantly envisioned far future with likable characters and well written interactions. I don’t want to say too much about it so I don’t spoil anything - but be forewarned that this book is not as “free” as the price tag might indicate since this one will get you hooked - and then you’ll have to buy all of the many sequels! But if the sequels are even half as good as Origins - they’ll be worth every penny!
