Life by Keith Richards & James Fox Book Summary

The long-awaited autobiography of Keith Richards, guitarist, songwriter, singer, and founding member of the Rolling Stones.

With The Rolling Stones, Keith Richards created the songs that roused the world, and he lived the original rock and roll life.

Now, at last, the man himself tells his story of life in the crossfire hurricane. Listening obsessively to Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records, learning guitar and forming a band with Mick Jagger and Brian Jones. The Rolling Stones's first fame and the notorious drug busts that led to his enduring image as an outlaw folk hero. Creating immortal riffs like the ones in "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Honky Tonk Women." His relationship with Anita Pallenberg and the death of Brian Jones. Tax exile in France, wildfire tours of the U.S., isolation and addiction. Falling in love with Patti Hansen. Estrangement from Jagger and subsequent reconciliation. Marriage, family, solo albums and Xpensive Winos, and the road that goes on forever.

With his trademark disarming honesty, Keith Richard brings us the story of a life we have all longed to know more of, unfettered, fearless, and true.

Keef...Oh Keef, unguarded and mind blowingly open.. The best book I've read this year....one of the few memoirs that surpassed my expectations and a roller coaster from start to finish. After reading the first few chapters I had the feeling that maybe the stories would get less crazy as Keef aged and matured.......ah,......not so much!!! Loved it and reread it ....it would make a great movie.

Life. Interesting biography but could use some serious editing. Too wordy.

Great book. Good read

Behind the guitar. A riveting combination of introspection and egotism. Drug addict, family man, violent, dedicated friend, careless and careful. He keeps your head spinning.

Awesome!. Not a big Rolling Stones fan, but don’t need to be to love this book! Entertaining, fun and some really touching/inspiring words in there as well. Loved it!

A treasure of a life adventure. this is what you are supposed to do during your life. Pass along awesome stories of perseverance, triumph, tragedy, and joy. Every life is filled with them and we all grow richer from their telling. Thank you Keith, the brother from another mother that I have never met. You have enlightened, entertained, warned, and even gave me a good recipe to enhance my journey in the phunk! Whether you are a Stones fan, a Richards fan, or just a curious reader, this is a well written insight to the absurdities of human nature and how a blessed troubadour navigated his way through a cut throat business, bigotry, drug addiction, the tragedy of the loss of a child, to still become the patriarch of a wonderful family and an example of a man that stands by his family and friends. thank you Keef P.M. Eaton (phunkyman)

Life. I have loved Keith Richards since the beginning and after reading his book, I know why I love him even more. He is a great songwriter/storyteller!

Good about the band, but then .... "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me" ... but wait, what if you didn't? You'd be the subject of "Life." If you ever played in a rock band, took it on the road, enjoyed some regional popularity, played a stadium, or spent hours dialing back records to figure out who's playing what (especially if it never crossed your mind that the guitar wasn't in standard tuning), you'll like this book for the parts about the band. Then there's the parts, seemingly endless narratives about drugs and other stuff. It gets tedious. Yet another person addicted to fame writing about addiction to drugs and especially with so little insight to the havoc in the lives of others. Skimming helps, but you have to watch for a nugget slipped in here and there.

Life. If you are a fan of rock-n-roll in general and/or The Stones in particular, you MUST read this book!

I want to rock n' roll!. Very interesting read. I enjoyed it! One of my favourite reads at the moment well it's not quite as good as Strange Tales of a Cotswold Town (the best Halloween/ horror book on the iBookstore) but it is most enjoyable. Never realised how hectic the Stones were.

My Life in the Bland. Honest autobiography detailing the trials and exploits of Mr. Richard's. What comes through to the reader is the straightforward and clear accounts of his memoir. He is unflinching in his assessment if the music business and the Rolling Stones. Whole I did enjoy the book,it fell kind of flat, too much detail not enough exploit. It does give fans of The Rolling Stones rare insight behind the scenes and was worth the read.

Life. Not compellingly written but interesting with just the right amount of shock value. Really, what does one expect from this Rock GOD. He just put it out there. I'm pretty sure he doesn't care if we fancy it or not. That's how Rock Gods work - right?

No truer words were ever.... If you love the man you will love him even more. The myths the legends the lies and the truths. A great read !

Great!. A really good biography of the legend himself. I really recommend the book to everyone to see that Keith isn't this figure everyone sees him as.

Music will save you. A great storyteller letting you know his extraordinary journey through life, full of brilliant insights about his understandings of facts and developments surrounding him but mostly about music, pure and fantastic music stronger than anything else including drugs.

Rock's Best Memoir. It's an engaging story behind one of the biggest rock & roll bands in history. Unlike some other rock memoirs, it's well written without losing his own voice. I learned things about Keith I never knew, and it helps me understand him better, why he made some of his choices, and how it affected his music. I love this book.

Couldn't put it down - a must read. Keith holds nothing back in this telling of his remarkable life. I worked with the Stones as an assistant engineer in 1979-1980 and found Keith to be a soulful, kind man with a terrific sense of humor, all of which comes out in this book. I particularly enjoyed reading about the trips to exotic places and how he immersed himself in the cultures. I read this in a just a few days because I found it that fascinating.

Life. While reading " Life " I felt like I got to know "Keef". My preconceived ideas regarding his character were incorrect. I like Keith Richards, although I've never met him, I now consider him to be a friend. Aubrey Paul Cullen

An Interesting Story Poorly Told. Book goes into tedious detail about musical composition which might be interesting to a musician but I found it to be incomprehensible. Strangely Richards shies away from discussing his relationship with Jagger and the other band members which he only addresses indirectly. I found this omission to be very disappointing. In general I found the story to be poorly told and hard to follow. I only stayed the course because the material was intrinsically interesting and every now and then the story came out notwithstanding the book's shortcomings.

Great Ride. Surprisingly literate with great pacing and the turn of more than a few great phrases. A detailed retelling of a life considerably outside of "normal experiences". I found the musical references, detail and storytelling to be wonderfully interesting and enjoyable! The last page, like much of the rest of the book, was pitch perfect.

Great collection of stories and I can only hear it read in Keith’s raspy voice.. I’d read another book by Keith Richards no matter the subject!

Life. Incredible to be able to get the personal side of a life you saw, and heard, for your ( my ) whole adult life. The Stones music is beyond amazing (which I listened to via headphones while reading!) To be able to read what was going on during the creation of their music- from Keith's perspective- is worth every word of this book! I want more-( Mick's input )! Keith did a great job of getting other's input when he could. I want to know more, to read on....

Very engaging and raucously charming!. It was fun to read about this bad boy with all his gifts and faults. I can't judge him in any way except to say thank you for his music, this book and his brand of wisdom.

Solid. Great window into the amazing world of Keith Richards. An insane life, lived to the hilt by a true original, musical genius. I feel that his honest description of drug use let us all know just how evil hard drugs can be. Glad he kicked...and survived. I came away with new respect for his musicianship and creativity. The only boring part was about his dogs...but hey...the rest was fascinating.

Life. Totally up front, provocative, and honest, that's Keith. A great read!

Reading This Will Make You 'Happy'. A truly spectacular, heartfelt, gripping read. I couldn't put it down. 'Keef' is truly one-of-a-kind. Fantastic.

Keiths life became part of my life. The most sincere, down to earth, funniest and most remarkable book I've ever read about a famous person. Honestly it was like being allowed access to the inner sanctum where reside the myths and mysteries of The Rolling Stones. You only think you've heard the stories until you hear them from Keith. I always figured Keith was ultimately given a pass because he is a rich famous person. I had no clue how close Keith and the Stones came to real peril. Of course everyone knows the price Brian Jones paid. I don't think it's common knowledge how hard Keith and the band had to fight to survive and prevail.

Accurate. Simply an amazing rock and roll memoir.

Worth it!. Great story, well written. Haven't been pulled in like this by a book in a long time.

Gets old. At some point you have heard enough clever stories to absorb the central point..... Keith lived an edgy, clever, and often dangerous life which many would conclude is loaded with positively crazy behavior. It's fun to a point, but is about 100 pages too long. On the bright side is the examination of how the music evolved, and the roles of the various band members in this creative process.

Good, solid read.. The stories are great, and the prose moves along briskly. If you’re a Stones fan, you should check this out.

Writes as good as he plays.. I'd half expected a simple rhyme on "sex, drugs and R &R", but not so. At half way through the reading of it, this book works as well as Mr. Richard's playing, and that's pretty good in a stylistic way. He seems to work well with a back and forth with others, so i'm not sure which of the authors is responsible for what, but the book was more than i expected, both in terms of insightful stories told with a nice conversational tone, some decent self reflection and insightful perspectives. Great passages on music, society, personal journeys, enough else. "Good show", at least if you've any interest in the topic of rock as a subject of prose. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that he/they write so informatively, since, from the reading, it seems Mr. Richards kept "journals" throughout his life and, as with music, writing "demands practice".

life is something Keith knows!. I am surprised at how articulate and insightful Mr Richards writing is! A wonderful, no holds barred, autobiography! I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the Stones. I was sorry to see it end. I am sure there is at least another book that could be written. But of course, I am a guitar player and spent many trips to the same mountain in Jamaica where his home is. A beautiful place, but I have quit going there also. A wonderful read. Take the time to enjoy it! He lived everyone's rock 'n' roll fantasy!

Life. If Life is can be corroborated and shown to be historically accurate then I believe this to be a fantastic eye opening read. A very worthy book Keith. Thank you.

A good ride. Good book to get an insiders view of world of rock and roll, well written, funny sad entertaining. Never a Keith fan, I came away actually liking the guy. Would love to meet him!

Life. Keith takes his life and snares its readers through the good, the bad, and the ugly! Brillantly conversational! By Silver Swan

:). Great to know

Great. Must read for any Stones fan

A great book if you love the stones.. Keith has had a life worth hearing about. I enjoyed this book even though the writing was at times very simplistic.

Excellent Book!. This is a fascinating account of the history of the Rolling Stones. Every word rings true. I read the whole thing in a day and a half, couldn't put it down!

Excellent if you're a Stones fan. Being a Stones fan since the late 60's this review might be a bit biased. The only downside for me was at times the writing was a little confusing. Going in and out of stories. But the substance was there. The fact that he can write and remember some of that time is remarkable with the aid of a diary. One thing i found particularly interesting was the way some songs came about. From the ideas to the lyrics. I can see why Mick would be upset at some of the things said but like Keith explains it was his perspective. And most of what he said was probably true. And the fact of the matter is Mick would be a nobody without Keith and vice versa. He admits some non flattering things about himself as well. Which is oddly commendable. Explaining why he survived heroin and his love affair with the stuff and his anger problems. His stormy relationship with Mick. But he didn't talk too much about Mick's womanizing and family life so Mick should be happy about that. He's a one of a kind which is not a particularly a good thing but an interesting one. Definitely worth a read.

Fascinating read from a fascinating guy. One must admire Keith Richard for his ability to survive amidst incredible, often self inflicted, turmoil and confusion that never seems to subside. But what, IMO, is more admirable is Richard's candor about the ups and downs of life as a member of one of modern history's baddest of all rock n roll bands. We've all heard the myriad urban legends about the Stones (Swiss blood replacement is my personal fave) and to have Keith confirm many and share others makes this book a truly great read. If you're a rock n roll fan, no matter whether you like or dislike the band, you'll love this book.

What a book. WOW

I was. Disappointed ... And bored =[

Life. This book is mostly about the creative process around song writing and making music, the lengths to which Keith creates a life that allows him to make the music, what is a band and what it is like to be a Rolling Stone. Shockingly insightful at times, but uneven in candor and self-understanding which obviously reflects the man he is, a very regular guy with an unerring desire to be the best musician he can be.

Life. What a joy to read. Keith Richard's....wish I knew you personally after reading your bio.

Life by Keith Richards. I have to admit my knowledge of Keith Richards was limited. I knew of the drug busts, the look, but never aware of how self effacing and talented he was and is. He is a true minstrel. This book is both hysterical yet sad. His drug use is well documented but his relationship with his son Marlin was not. Not until this book. There are so many rocks (stones?) being overturned in this book, so many interesting stories.... All vetted by witnesses and or friends. I must also admit that I have a much different opinion of Mr. Richards. I like him, I really do......

Life is what you make it. Reading this book feels like you're being told the story by Keef himself. The words about the process of songwriting ring so true, and elevate the Stones by the very descriptions and images they invoke. It's hard to imagine a better telling of the story of a great rock 'n roll band, and Mr. Richard's already iconic stature goes up a notch or two. Reading on the iPad was a joy too for the fact I went right to the Stones collection and played the songs I was reading about while I was reading! What a great enhancement. Long live Keith Richards - an amazing musician, songwriter, and storyteller, and to a great, adventurous Life.

Loved it. I began reading this book as neither a huge Keith Richards fan nor a huge Stones fan. There is a lot of interesting detail in the story that shows just how meticulous KR was with his notes over the years - the detail on the music itself, particularly the influence of blues and the interaction between the Stones and other artists was fascinating. The self deprecating tone some makes the reader like KR despite the wild excesses that always surrounded him. Would recommend this book to long time fans as well as those just getting started with the stones.

Life. I grew up with the Stones.....saw them live in Chicago early 70's. I found the book fascinating. It was so awesome to read how a rock star lives, and the journey to stardom! I like the candor and honesty portrayed in the book. You'd never know how much a musician has to go through by seeing them on stage at a concert. Keith is very hard working and passionate about his music. After all he went through, he is still writing and playing music. So cool...

Loved it!. I could not put this book down. A really nice love story.

Life- keith Richards. Great read. Thought i was listening to Keith tell stories over a beer and a toke. What a life. Great insight. Makes ya wanna spin some old records and watch the stars

Life. If you play guitar it's a must read. If you don't it's still a story worth taking the time to learn what the fast paced life of rock and roll superstardom is all about.

Life. Could have been sub-titled "The Further Adventures of Nigel Molesworth."

What a book!. I am an avid reader of bio's and mainly rock musician bios. This one is without a doubt amongst the best and turned me into a Rolling Stones addict. Great stories about the Stones rise and the relationships between them all. Keef talks in depth of his thoughts of Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, battles with drugs and police. Really just an awesome must read all round!

A great life. A great romp through the years with Keith as narrator. I am not sure how he survived. I am sure he sanitized many of the stories. I noticed Mick is always around but there are few actual accounts of his actions. He knows where his bread is buttered. The most disturbing part is when Keith talks about when his 7 year old Son was on tour with the band.

Boring. First chapter was about the rock and roll life style, and a good read. The rest of the book was boring. I could only get half way through it.

Life by Keith Richards. Buddha said "It's always something with you people". Thanks Keith for another piece of your puzzle. Doris made my day.

I love "Life". This had to be one of the most interesting, humorous, passionate autobiography I have ever read. After reading it I wish I could get together with Kieth for a visit as I feel like he is a long lost friend. An excellent read, well done King Richard IV :)
