The Lost Gate by Orson Scott Card Book Summary

Orson Scott Card's The Lost Gate is the first book in the Mithermages series from the New York Times bestselling author of Ender's Game.

Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different, and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself.

He grew up in the rambling old house, filled with dozens of cousins, and aunts and uncles, all ruled by his father. Their home was isolated in the mountains of western Virginia, far from town, far from schools, far from other people.

There are many secrets in the House, and many rules that Danny must follow. There is a secret library with only a few dozen books, and none of them in English โ€” but Danny and his cousins are expected to become fluent in the language of the books. While Danny's cousins are free to create magic whenever they like, they must never do it where outsiders might see.

Unfortunately, there are some secrets kept from Danny as well. And that will lead to disaster for the North family.

The Lost Gate. As usual - Card takes us on a trip worth taking!

The Lost Gate. Every book I read by Card never disappoints. This book proves again and again why I keep coming back.

They should make this into movie. Yea

I'm obsessed!. I read it in two sittings and was anxious to start The Gate Thief, but it seems I can't get it on my iPad yet. This is the first fantasy I've read in years and I was blown away.

Good story. Good story

Where's the rest?. Over too soon. I gots me a hankering for more.

Brilliant read!. Can't wait for the next one

Yet another unfinished story. I'm frustrated by the habit of "cliff hangers". Multi-part stories are fine but they should be complete with in them selves. "Ender's Game" had a resolution. I read the subsequent books not because the story is left largely unresolved but because I liked the character and the later novels went new places with it. This story does not resolve any of the main questions. We're just supposed to buy the next exciting installment to find out. I'm tired of always being trated like a consumer who just exists to be pumped by authors and publishers for more money. It's rather ironic since the character in this story is supposed to be learning about integrity and not using people. Whatever. I'm frustrated and disappointed.

Sequel PLEEEEEZE!!!. Loved this book! I have dreamed the things in this book!!!! Oh so hopeful a sequel will continue this never ending story!

Amazing. I've read many many books by Scott Card and this is probably the best one so far.Highly recommend it.

Great. Great book I loved it I hope they make another

To: yet another unfinished story reviewer. You ARE a consumer. You aren't producing books. You aren't selling books. You are buying books. Not sure why consumer is a bad word for you, that's what you are. Next an author is creating as any other artist would. He is creating a body of work. If you want to experience it, then buy it. If you don't, then don't. But don't buy it and then complain that he didn't create it to your specifications. Because you didn't hire him to write a book to your specifications. The author took it upon himself to write a story and hope that people would enjoy it enough to pay him some money for a chance to read it. Do you make the same complaints whenever you see a HBO or Showtime drama? Do you curse them for treating you like a consumer for making you renew your subscription to the premium service so that catch the next season of Californication or Sopranos or whatever is on now? You're free to review the writing, even review the choice of creating a serial rather than a single enclosed book, but to take it as a personal affront because you feel like the author is doing it in this manner just to get your money is an embarrassing position to take on your part. For one thing, the author might feel the story is better told in this manner. For another, maybe the author is doing it for the money. Why is this a bad thing? Shouldn't a person be free to create and offer any product he wishes and if there are people willing to buy it, then so much the better for him. Just because YOU aren't willing to buy it (well you are but you'll complain later) doesn't mean the product is any less good or valuable. Review the writing, review the characters, review the manner in which the story is told. But don't complain about the price. It's tacky and belittles your own intelligence.

Not bad. And not worth 12 bucks. The story feels like it stops at the end of a chapter instead of the end of the book. I really got into the book but it just didn't feel like it was crafted by a master. I think they should lower the price.

Why a new series???. I wish Card would stop writing these books, why can't he just finish the Enders series

Where. Where is the second one?

One of my favorites. A great book definitely worth reading. Can't wait until the next book.

Fun story - nothing incredible - however.... At times the writing of action and the progression of the story feels rushed and secondary to the long discussion of the magical lore. Time is taken to explain the sort of physics the magical gates and the history of lore. However as one reviewer wrote, I agree that the conclusion of the novel was abrupt and left me feeling kind of cheated. As I saw the end of the book approaching, saw the pages remaining number approaching conclusion, I grew kind of startled. It didn't see how it was possible this great story could be come to an end so quickly, I really thought it was just getting started. So it was an unfulfilling ending. I don't know if the story was so compelling as to encourage me to pick up the next installment, if there is one. It definitely didn't feel like a book that took 30 years to finish.

A nonstop page turner. This has to be one of the greatest modern fantasy novels I've read. For those of you who have a preference for sci-fi stories, such as I do, this is a magnificent departure from your comfort zone. What started as an excerpt trailering the afterward in the "Ender's Game" ebook, quickly became a truly enticing story. Unlike what I read before in other reviews, I'd argue this isn't a huge cliffhanger. Admittedly, I wait with bated breath for the next installment of this sure to be amazing series, I felt it concluded amazingly, and on a perfect note. If you are a fan Orson Scott Card's work, you'll feel right at home. I have read the entire Ender universe and some of them repeatedly. Even after having just completed Ender's Game for maybe the fifth or sixth time just a week ago, and hoping evermore for another splinter series to mirror what the Bean/Shadow series, I'm hoping even more strongly for more about Danny.

An enjoyable read. My wife and I were drawn in from the beginning. Danny is a wonderful new character and I look forward to seeing what Orson Scott Card does with this world he has created. I enjoyed reading about this system of magic and seeing Danny progress from an irresponsible child into... Who knows? I'm immensely glad at least one more book is coming. Would that it were a series. But please Mr. Card don't die, as Robert Jordan did (some things are unavoidable), before completing this great story. Those that will attempt to complete your work may do a credible job, but they won't be you. In fact do the world a courtesy and eat healthfully and don't smoke. My days are so much better when I have one of your books to read. I'll be rereading Ender until your next Mithermage book!

Awesome book. I bought this book after I read the first ender book and that was around 4:00 one afternoon and forgot to sleep and finished it some time between 5:00 & 6:00 in the morning I literally couldn't put it down haha.

Super read. Another great story by this author. Hard to put down; obviously very engaging for me. Looking forward to continuing the story but I do not feel unsatisfied at where the story finishes. I feel it's a nice semi-conclusion in a larger story arc. Can't wait until we hear what happens next!

The Lost Gate. Excellent Entertainment!!!

Wheres the second one?!?!. It took me about a day to read this book start to finish. Totally adicting! I could Not put my iphone down, amd I ended up finishing it in a resteraunt. It's an epic fantasy, and i loved every word of it. But i have one question for card, wheres tje second one?!?! :D

Fun and enjoyable!. Don't be bothered by the elitist attitudes of some reviewers or the agenda of others. If you want to enjoy a book, read this one. All those who give it a bad review are just here to impress themselves with their own words.

Loved it!. I really enjoyed this book. It introduces a completely different idea for the presence of ancient "gods" in all Earthly cultures. It was greatly intriguing, as many OSC books are, due to this genius connection between fiction and the hint of the real modern world. Once I got rolling in this book I couldn't stop. I really appreciated how the story just jumps right in instead of wasting several chapters explaining the back story. At the beginning you are suddenly and irreversibly immersed into OSC's world of modern "gods" among men. I loved this book and am anxiously awaiting a second along these lines!

Amazing story!. Was my first OSC book and I couldn't put it down! When I heard the 2nd one was coming out I had to have it! He's an amazing writer!

Couldn't put it down!. At the risk of sounding like I'm trying to be funny, I'd say this book was spellbinding. What a phenomenally well thought out novel. I was sorely disappointed only that there was not more, and I now have to wait anxiously for the next book. I love how well thought out his characters and the background of this story were. No matter how much he tells you, there's always more there - whether you learn about it it not, it still makes for a better story.

Where's The Gate Thief?. Why did Apple take down The Gate thief from the store??

Lost Gate. Interesting and compelling enough that I will order the next book today
