For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway Book Summary

Ernest Hemingway's masterpiece on war, love, loyalty, and honor tells the story of Robert Jordan, an antifascist American fighting in the Spanish Civil War.

In 1937 Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war there for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from “the good fight” and one of the foremost classics of war literature.

For Whom the Bell Tolls tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades, is attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain. In his portrayal of Jordan’s love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of a guerilla leader’s last stand, Hemingway creates a work at once rare and beautiful, strong and brutal, compassionate, moving, and wise. Greater in power, broader in scope, and more intensely emotional than any of the author’s previous works, For Whom the Bell Tolls stands as one of the best war novels ever written.

It rings for war.. Read this book, as America cavalierly flirts with a second civil war. We’ve forgotten, as a people, the horrors of war.

For Whom the Bells Toll. A classic.

how am i the first to write a review for this classic!. This book is amazing. All of the characters are flawlessly written and the ending is heart pounding. Love Hemingway.

Good book. Great ending!. This is the only Hemingway book I have read and it was great! I spent 4 hours finishing this book because of the anticipation of how the ending was going to play out. The end of this book was amazing. It starts out very good and slows down only to bring out the much suspense at the end. Some of the characters are so dynamic that you begin to feel for them.

For Whom. the Bell Tolls. An inspiring work that got me to thinking on several levels, not only on location but also into the minds of all of the players who make up this story. I could empathize with each one in various ways. This is a complex story but told with absolute clarity. I highly recommend.

SELF-SACRIFICE. I enjoyed the characters, especially Robert Jordan, the patriot. If you like classic novels with valiant characters, you will not be disappointed by this Hemingway classic.

Loved it. The only thing I have to say is the ending had me all choked up.

It must be me.. Who am I to criticize the mighty? But I don't get it. It seems to me that he was struggling to fill pages with words so that a fairly simple plot could be stretched to meet some sort of page quota.
