One thousand white woman. A wonderful story. a gretread.

Disappointed. When I grabbed this before hopping on the airplane, I expected an exciting adventure into the wild west through a captivating and powerful heroine. What I found instead was a trite set of journal entries that did little to convey a sense of emotional strength. The protagonist, and the characters around her, remained flat throughout. Her "transformation" within the book seemed contrived. If you want a historical fiction with fascinating, exciting characters, look somewhere else. If you just want a pleasant and fast-paced read, do the same. I only had 20 pages left and couldn't bring myself to listen to her whine anymore.

Engaging!. Loved this book. Amazing story line with wonderful characters. Eerie, suspenseful and emotional.

1000 White Women. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I just wonder how much of this story actually "is/was" the way it really was then. Seemed so real. Characters, imagery, savagery, friendships and kindness. I enjoyed the history aspect of this story...and...I do believe this "pact/trade" with the government was real.

Would have been better from a female author. I struggled with the perspective of the main character in her journal entries. Her emotions didn’t seem like they were the real emotions a woman would have had. I loved the plot and the beautiful descriptions, but I felt like a female author would have successfully portrayed a woman’s emotions in her journal.

Had Potential. The first half of this book is riveting, but the events that follow are so fantastical and historically implausible that all immersion is lost. Also, the narrator is entirely difficult to relate to, as she skates through impossible circumstances with "Mary-Sue"-esque panache. Every character is impossibly full up with love for the insincere, unlikable protagonist----they are nearly as infatuated with the narrator as she is with herself, but not quite. I would have liked to enjoy this read, and had high hopes for it after I had devoured its very promising introductory pages. Unfortunately, the author did not follow through with the potential this plot idea contained, or with accurate research of the era in which this piece was meant to have occurred in.

Did not want it to end. Loved this book. The kind of book you can't wait to get back to each day but at the same time, you hate to rush through because you don't really want to finish.

One Thousand White Women. This book was very exciting. It was so real at times I couldn't put it down. Well written and researched. The connection to a real family out of Chicago and the occurrences of the day could very well have happened in so many families. A must read to all who enjoy the old West stories A White Woman

Fluid and Elevated w/characters you come to love. So nice to read a book that I can't put down. His writing is beautiful and his characters bring you in so much that you worry about them, cry for them, and love them. Can't wait for the sequel this Sept!

One of my favorite books!. This was one of my favorite reads. However because I had searched for historical fiction I thought it was mostly true the whole time I was reading it. I told all my friends about this unbelievable part of history and then discovered the only part that was true was that the chief had asked the president for 100 white women but was declined. So I had to humble myself and retract my story to my friends. But I still loved the book, just wish it had been true.

Men shouldn't write as women. The character depth just isn't there, I so wanted it to be. Wonderful idea for a story, but falls flat in world building and charater development. This what a man thinks a woman thinks. Explains a lot about the mind of a man...

Excellent read but.... What a disappointment to find it to be complete fiction! I guess I should have read the epilogue first! :-(

One thousand white women. Excellent book. The book gets better with Every page turned. Characters are fully developed and come alive during this tale. All the through the book I had to keep reminding myself that this is not a true story. The writing is that good!

Great but needed more emotions. Loved the history aspect of it, what it would feel like to live with the Native Americans. The only thing is that I wish there was more feeling from May. It felt like she was a man where she didn’t express any emotion. Any woman would have cared to have two other sister wives, being separated from her children, and feelings for the men she was with? If this was written more as a romance, I would’ve loved it!

Captivating. Find yourself lost in the 1870's, thinking how easily you yourself could have been May Dodd had you lived in that era. Get swept away in Native American culture and saddened by the loss of it. Be shocked, appalled, blown away, fascinated, humored, and in love all at the same time. Beautifully crafted, believable, fast paced, love and action filled and gut wrenching!

May Dodd. I was truly sad to find out that this book was one of fiction. So totally did I believe, that I have told May Dodd's story to many friends and loved ones. If there is a disclaimer at the beginning of the book,I missed it. Coming from a mixed heritage of Indian and whites, I totally believed the author. Sad to say, I probably will never read a book if his again.

Amazing. This was definitely one of the most captivating stories I've ever read. It was almost painful for it to end.
