Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah Book Summary

Can a woman ever really know herself if she doesn't know her mother?

From the author of the smash-hit bestseller Firefly Lane and True Colors comes Kristin Hannah's powerful, heartbreaking novel that illuminates the intricate mother-daughter bond and explores the enduring links between the present and the past

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters. As children, the only connection between them was the Russian fairy tale Anya sometimes told the girls at night. On his deathbed, their father extracts a promise from the women in his life: the fairy tale will be told one last time—and all the way to the end. Thus begins an unexpected journey into the truth of Anya's life in war-torn Leningrad, more than five decades ago. Alternating between the past and present, Meredith and Nina will finally hear the singular, harrowing story of their mother's life, and what they learn is a secret so terrible and terrifying that it will shake the very foundation of their family and change who they believe they are.

Tears often. Splendid telling of sorrow, love, pain, laughter…and the story of life.

WOW. A book to savor… I am a fast reader and often rush through fabulously written novels because I can’t put them down. Yet with this story I found myself drawing it out and reading it in a way that would allow me to immerse myself in the story and draw out the last beautifully written sentences as long as possible. The author’s best work I’m my humble opinion. I want this not just as an e-book but also hardcover to cherish as well.

Just stick to the fairytale. I loved the historical fiction in this book and the fairytale had me hooked. However the story of the mom and her daughters fell completely flat and was a total waste to me.

The winter garden. The most beautiful book I have ever read. Could not put it down. The story and the way the author writes will leave you spellbound.

Wonderful. Very surprised at the negative reviews. It took me a bit to get into it but I ended up loving it

Gripping historical account. Gripping historical account of Leningrad during WWII woven into a very moving family story

Russian Siege, WWll , and The Effects on Human Life. An outstanding novel about family, love, and forgiveness. The historical knowledge in this novel brings the sheer horror people went through during Stalin’s regime, as well as the destruction and human sacrifice of WWll. I could not put this book down and read it in two days. The characters and storyline will stay with me I am know. They and the story is, in one word, unforgettable.

Winter Garden. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read! I often think of the characters and the unimaginable hardships of WW2 ! This author has written a beautiful book I will never forget!

A must read!. I loved the story within the story. Also how she describes every scene. You can almost hear the planes and bombs. Riveting

Appropriate. Depressing a repetitive. I keep waiting for something new to happen.

Hard to put down, hard to read, but this is a wonderful book.. This is an amazing book. I had to stop reading at times, to take a break from the sadness and horror of the story told within the story. I love historical novels- learning something while having a fun read is one of my favorite things to do. This book tells of the Siege of Leningrad, through the tortured story told by one of the main characters, the mother. She is emotionally estranged from her two adult American/Russian daughters, who have tried throughout their entire lives to break through the icy emotionless exterior of their Russian- born mother. It’s beautifully written (as expected of any book by this talented author), worth reading and worth the emotional investment you’ll make while enjoying the book. Put it down if you need a break. As I did, but make your way through it- it’s worth it. And learn some history.

A winter Garden. Awesome. A touching beautiful magical book

Excellent read. Love reading about the people during the war times.

Five stars!. I couldn’t put this book down. Had me “ugly crying”. The last book to do that to me was The Nightingale, by the same author. She is an amazing story teller and did not disappoint with this book. Would highly recommend to anyone who loves historical fiction. Officially one of my favorites now.

Keep Going! The Fairy Tale that emerges into Truth is mesmerizing!. I thought the book got off to a slow start....but I kept going, and am so glad I did! I learned a lot about this period of Russian history that was heartbreaking. The story here is heartbreaking, but at the same time resolved in a beautiful way!

Great Read. I enjoyed the book

Truly one of the most poignant stories I have ever read.. The strength of these women was truly amazing. I will forever be in awe. To complain about the slightest discomfort pales in comparison to what they endured for years and years.

Love it!. Beautiful story! I’ll admit I cried! This is the 4th of this authors book that I’ve read!

Great book must read. I like the historical aspect of the story, creating a believable family tragedy

Winter Garden. I ended this book with tears running down my face. I love history and have read many books (fiction and nonfiction) about WWII and and the atrocities during that period. The Author does an excellent job of depicting the effect of the horrors on a personal level. I would think this was a hard book to write. Thank you for doing so. How soon we forget the horrors of war and how crucial it is for us to remember. I have read and enjoyed several of Hannah’s books. Will continue to do so.

Loved. Beautiful! Sad, but beautiful

Loads of typos. Spell check would be a worthwhile investment for this publisher. At least a dozen typos that I found. Great book otherwise.

Mothers daughters. Interesting mother child interaction on many levels. Interesting Russian history involved.

Wth?. I fell in love with this author after reading The Nightingale! Her writing is amazing! I felt for every character! This one is a much different story. The characters are not relatable. The fairy tales are just unemotional. Hard to make a connection to any event in the book. Book totally falls flat to the writer’s potential. I do suggest her books “The Great Alone,” and “Firefly Lane.”

A tedious read…. The book built too slowly.

Simply Amazing. This is my third book written by Kristin Hannah and it does not disappoint. A story about family, love and forgiveness that truly speaks to the heart.

Heartbreaking. One of the most riveting books I’ve read in a long long time! Heart wrenchingly sad yet a beautiful love story as well.

Love, love, love!!!!. Absolutely loved this book... made me “need” my sisters.

Could. Not. Put. It. Down.. I just love Kristin Hannah, her writing and story telling is so beautiful. Just when you think you have it figured out she takes your heart for another turn. Winter Garden was an amazing story of love, bravery, dreams and perseverance, I couldn’t put it down. I finished it moments ago at my sons basketball practice and was crying in the lobby. I will forever hold these characters in my heart, I’m going to miss them.

Winter Garden. Beautiful story! The way she writes makes you feel you are there and part of it.

Overwhelming strength.... I’m speechless with tears rolling down my cheeks. This is the story of a women with such great strength fueled by the love of her family. It’s an amazing human story given the real life events of the horrific time.

Another Masterpiece. Kristin Hannah’s writing never disappoints me. There is something so very special and delicate about the way she unfolds and reveals truths of women’s lives through her exquisite use of historical fiction. She encourages her readers to think about the past in a way that so seamlessly unites it’s importance to both, the present and the future. This novel delves into yet another chapter of history so often overlooked in regard to the obstacles faced by women in wartime.

Worth reading. A Heartbreaking but wonderful story.

Devastating and breathtaking. This book is painstakingly beautiful. Well developed characters and a story you grow to genuinely care about. I usually always pick up a Kristin Hannah book when I have the chance and this one did not disappoint, one of my favorites of hers overall. Incredibly well done. Pulls on your heart strings and may leave you teary eyed but it is so worth it.

From boring to amazing. I had a very difficult time getting through the first chapters and almost gave up on the Winter Garden! If I begin a book I never stop until the end, but Winter Garden challenged me for sure as I found it repetitive and dragging for many chapters. However, it all changed midway and the second half of this amazing story is worth the wait!! You will become completely enthralled and will stay up way past your bedtime to get to the end of Winter Garden! Highly recommended!!

Just awful. Terrible writing and insufferable , one dimensional characters

Fantastic. What a beautiful book! Couldn’t put it down. This is a story that will stay with its readers. Loved it!

Winter Garden. Another great story by a terrific story teller. At times difficult to read and so, so painful, but in the end uplifting and encouraging about the human spirit.

Heartbreaking and beautiful. I love the story of Leningrad, St . Petersburg, during WWI. The character development is exceptional and the story intricate, heartbreaking, and inspiring. One of my favorite Kristen Hannah novels.

Could not put this book down!. I have read almost all of Kristin Hannah’s books and it’s so hard to pick a favorite. Each book is better than the last! I really loved this book and would highly recommend it!

Beautiful. A little slow at first….. but the end hold so much meaning. So glad I made it to the end of this book and it’s profound beauty.

Simply amazing!. Incredibly sad but it’s a well written story!!!

Loved it!. I could not put this book down. I didn’t think I would love another book as much as I love The Nightengale but this book is my new favorite!!

Was it my fav, not sure. This is the 3rd book I’ve read by this author, I still say The Nightingale was THE best book I read in a long time. This one was interesting when it talked about Leningrad, but I have issues when I read books where the main characters never seem to actually speak up for themselves or behavior nobody in this day and age would just not stick up for themselves or ask questions to their family member who treated you like you were barely their own daughter. So did I like this book, it was a quick read and it is historically important to know the suffering people went thru during the war, but still my fav was The Nightingale book.

Lovely story. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I absolutely recommend it.

Another great story. As with all of the author’s books, I cry. And I also learn new truths about life, about myself, about those I love. Thank you, Kristen Hannah, however you do it!

Beautifully written. This is such a captivating, beautiful work of art. One of the best stories I’ve read in many years.

ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. I was so immersed in this book from the very beginning that I couldn’t put it down and I read it for hours from beginning to end with no interruptions throughout the night and in the same spot from which I’d begun it. Absolutely riveting heartbreaking and truly lovely.

Provoking in a good way. I really liked this book, it made me cry. Just takes a long time to get going in my opinion.

Couldn’t finish. Too boring.. 200 pages in and it’s a drawn out saga of two boring sisters. I thought it was a book of World War Two but maybe it takes a very long time to get here.

Heart wrenching. This is a fantastic story. Well worth the read

Amazing book. I feel changed after reading this book. I could not stop reading.

Winter garden. I read the Great Alone also, this woman is one of the best story tellers I have read, and I have been reading for fifty years. Stories that really grab you, very profound and you know they have been lived for real by someone. Tears run down your cheeks as you read. Thank you Hannah, I will read more of your books

Well done once again.. This book is absolutely beautiful. What an amazing story and such a fantastic way to tell it. Kristin Hannah is a master at crafting beautiful and believable characters. They are so real and human that suffer with them, laugh with them and you're sure to miss them when you close the book for the last time. This book had me in tears more than once. A wonderfully crafted work of art.

The Winter Garden. I am absolutely speechless. There are no words to describe this. Amazing work, again, Kristin!
