Soooooo real!. I have taught in Oklahoma public schools for 28 years, and have witnessed exactly the kinds of travesties this book is about! I have kiddingly said a thousand times "When I buy my own school ........." The author takes a real life topic, mixes it with just the right amount of humor, sarcasm, realism, hope, and love to make a great read! I am retiring this year knowing that I did the best I could for the kids I taught. They knew that even though I was one of the toughest, I also cared about them and their futures! I will definitely look for and read more books by this author! Read this book! Teachers will love it, administrators will know it is true (even though the truth sometimes hurts), and parents will get a glimpse of reality!

For teachers only. This book is true to form in what teachers have to deal with on s daily basis but can't say the truth. The romance part could have been left out; otherwise, a very good read.

A Terrible Beauty is well worth the read!. Dave St John has chosen a surprising subject in Terrible Beauty and written with insight and humor, and so well the main characters seem like friends. Dai, the main character, is a brilliant teacher, who lost his wife and daughter in an accident, and his only remaining passion is teaching. Solange is sent to investigate his teaching methods since her district wants to terminate him, despite his obvious love of teaching and constant dedication to his students. Dai is a man with little left to lose and Solange could lose everything if she doesnt fire him. Her career is riding on Dai's pending termination, so she has to shadow him and follow him for several days to evaluate his work. Through a series of events such as selfish parents who want to blame the teachers for their parental failings, other embattled and disgruntled employees of the school systems, as well as angry and violent students, Solange evaluates Dai and begins to look deeper at why the school wants him terminated and how she will live with herself for being the instrument of his destruction. Excellent novel, with a great story and ending...well worth your time. Thanks for the entertaining and thought provoking read Dave!

I give it a B -. If you are a teacher in a public school setting, you will truly appreciate this. If not, it probably won't hit home.

What teachers know but seldom tell outside the staff room. Very cleverly written! As a mother of five, one being a primary school teacher, I feel every school administrator should read this! Very informative and beautifully voiced. Thank you very much!

A terrible beauty: teacher novella. This is a very well written piece. It is an eye opener into the field of education and speaks of how even though life may be hard... there are always rewards to be reaped, sometimes popping up when you least expect them too. This feels as if it's a true story and it was hard to put down as I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I recommend this read... but this sort of novel is only for a certain type of crowd...
