Fail.. Im a 20 year old who loves a great book.I jumped into this expecting a book i could 'get lost in,'with all the good reviews on the cover I was assured this was a good choice. This is SO slow, I thought that it would pick up and it hasn't. Good details, but that attention should have been put into the story line. WILL NOT RECOMMEND.

Magnificent!. This is a magnificent novel, flawlessly written, a suspenseful smart story. I would give it a 10 even if five stars means excellent.

A spectacular book!. I love everything Ann Patchett has written and this book is one of her very best. You are immersed in Marina's mission...you are there and you understand how and what she is thinking, what she is feeling, the physical discomforts, the longings, the conflicted emotions that plague her every decision. You must experience this book which is so very aptly named and it will stay with you forever.

State of Wonder. Except for an annoying reliance on stereotypes of Minnesotans (Patchett is seemingly unaware of the diversity of culture and ethnicity in the Twin Cities, not to mention, we're also perfectly at home with the plentiful trees in our rather leafy urban and suburban landscapes...perhaps she confused Minnesota with South Dakota?), this was an engaging and entertaining read. The story compels the reader to think critically about our society's collective sense of entitlement when it comes to the business of fertility.

100 Words or Less. This is a novel that grows on you, the deeper you read. The beginning seems trite, though it tries so hard to be emotional. It’s just that I’ve read this set-up a dozen times before. However, once you get past the first couple of chapters, the characters, setting, and plot take off. There’s a lot of detail to love in this story. The sort of unusual environment that takes talent to make realistic. Patchett does a great job of developing her characters beyond the surface, and that helps with the ending. It’s a good, fun, interesting read.

State of wonder. Was thrilled to get involved in this book. . But extremely disappointed at the end. ...... A lot of questions were never answered the scientific reason for the book never got resolved. I felt that the amount of pages were done ad the book ....just left in the air.

A Great Read. An extremely entertaining and evoking story. Loved the characters, the plot and all the imaginative facts in there that make you believe as if they were actual true facts. She's a great writer, and I reallt enjoyed this novel. I recommend it!

Great read. I so enjoyed reading this book. I was sad to reach the end, while also satisfied at how Patchett wrapped up all the loose ends. I couldn't wait for uninterrupted blocks of time in my day to bury my nose in it's pages. I give it 5 stars!!

Simply breathtaking!. This is my first time reading a book by this author, and I absolutely loved it. I read the sample first and I knew I had to read the rest to see what happens next. The author keeps you guessing and takes you beyond the character's perspective. She takes you along a three dimensional ride with so many possibilities. I definitely want to read more books by this author!

A special savored delight. I wait anxiously for a Ann Patchett to write. I bought this book as soon as it was available and saved it like a treasure to be unwrapped at just the perfect time. Yum!

State of wonder. I found this book unresolved in it's story line, for one thing. I read for over 400 pages, hoping this tail was leading somewhere, and then the climax just fizzled, leaving many loose ends. It was disappointing. I apologized to a friend whom I'd recommended it to, as she is a local Nasville author, and we both had a similar experience-- just screening our heads in "wonder".

State of wonder. Hands down this book is in my top ! The writing, oh the story telling this is the best. As you can see I’m not writer ! But I love to read , this was good you try to slow down ,your reading so you can make it last.

Beautifully crafted and enthrallingly captivating. Ms Padgett has managed to capture the awe; with the fear and marvel that encompasses of being in a totally foreign and compelling new environment. The title could not be more appropriate. She mixes just the right amount of medical fact and imagery with human kindness, frailty and the diversity present in real life. While not devoid of romance she handled it with controlled enthusiasm letting the tension and excitement of the drama move the tenderness forward. A thoroughly great read!

Left me wanting more. Great book. Great characters. Lots of emotions throughout and not to wordy or to much information. Not sure how I feel about the ending, but not sure what else there was to say. I just wanted more I guess.

Addictive read. Consistently strong Ann Patchett story telling. I bought this book after reading the brilliant Dutch House and this one was just as satisfying though the characters and setting couldn’t have been more different.

Wonderful. Gorgeous and beautifully written, this book was my first introduction to Patchett's work. The story itself moved me to turn the pages, and I found myself desperate to read more of her work.

State of Wonder. An emotinally engaging novel that indiscriminatively embraces distant cultures; disregards scientific boundaries and social conventions in a tasteful fashion.. Yet, as the plot thickens, the strength of the story lessens; the characters become mere stereotypes trying to find their authenticity in an unfortunate and unispired unfolding of the story. All the literary magic eventualy drowns , way before those " rapp " mushrooms down the muddy waters of the Rio Negro. Serendipitously, I read Wade Davis ' book: " One River " , just before reading this one... Now Wade's book inspired a state of wonder I can still breathe .. in and out the gates of heaven

State of wonder. very interesting, although I liked her other books, "Bel Canto" and "The Magician's Assistant" a lot better.

Mystery amid diverse cultures. A well written mystery entwined in two very different cultural settings. The female protagonist takes a fascinating journey from corporate life in Minnesota to the deepest jungles of South America.

Great Read. State of wonder is an amazing read and I highly recommend this work of modern prose.

State of wonder. This book transported me to another world, one in which I could not imagine residing and simultaneously wanted to visit. I couldn't wait to get to the conclusion but as the pages turned quickly in that direction I didn't want the book to end. Such was the impact of this novel and the opposing feelings that it wrought in this reader. Belief and disbelief. Hope and futility. Reality and fantasy. Trust and mistrust. Truth and lies. Morality and immorality. Innocence, naivety, possibility, fact. The end.

Loved it!. I loved this book. It combined deep jungle adventure with this really dry sense of humour and lots of heart. I finished it yesterday and it is still lingering with me so much that I hate to start another book. I want more of THIS book!

State of Wonder. Ms. Patchett weaves a tale that has all the elements of a mysterious death, a Lewis and Clark expedition, a tepid love story and a Florence Nightingale saga all wrapped into one. I never felt bored reading this book, for Patchett is an extremely accomplished writer, but I did find the tale a little far fetched when it began to pick up elements of science fiction. The reader will enjoy being put deep in the Brazilian jungle with this book-her narrative is very enlightening.
