The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The fifth book in Diana Gabaldon’s acclaimed Outlander saga, the basis for the Starz original series.

“A grand adventure written on a canvas that probes the heart, weighs the soul and measures the human spirit across [centuries].”—CNN

The year is 1771, and war is coming. Jamie Fraser’s wife tells him so. Little as he wishes to, he must believe it, for hers is a gift of dreadful prophecy—a time-traveler’s certain knowledge.

Born in the year of Our Lord 1918, Claire Randall served England as a nurse on the battlefields of World War II, and in the aftermath of peace found fresh conflicts when she walked through a cleftstone on the Scottish Highlands and found herself an outlander, an English lady in a place where no lady should be, in a time—1743—when the only English in Scotland were the officers and men of King George’s army.

Now wife, mother, and surgeon, Claire is still an outlander, out of place, and out of time, but now, by choice, linked by love to her only anchor—Jamie Fraser. Her unique view of the future has brought him both danger and deliverance in the past; her knowledge of the oncoming revolution is a flickering torch that may light his way through the perilous years ahead—or ignite a conflagration that will leave their lives in ashes.

Loved this one too. I just love these characters

Best in series so far!. Epic, emotional, and exciting.

The Fiery Cross. I fell back in love with Claire and Jamie! Roger's getting there too, and Bree way to go on your aim.

In a nut shell-first time read through. It’s great when the story line is moving but a lot of it will be pretty stagnant. And you just have to wade yourself before you find something in the book you enjoy. Wether it be the romantic aspects or the historical parts of even the medical parts. A lot of it could have been cut from this book and it would have been a great book!! But no this was worse than my first read through of Dragonfly in Amber.

The Firey Cross. Masterfully written this stands as one of the best works in the series. Gabaldon is at the top of her storytelling game.

Sassanach 4 life❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. Some spoilers! Words cannot describe how much I love this series and this book. I was reluctant to continue the series after the 20 year thing. It left me heartbroken. So many years lost that will never be gained again, but I'm glad I continued. I love how Jamie, Claire and their family have finally gotten to live their life together. I love Bree, Roger and especially little Jemmy. Some parts of the novel tend to ramble on so and that does get a bit annoying but it still doesn't take away from the story. That's how Diana writes. Outlander has forever spoiled me. No matter how many books I read nothing ever tops these.

Fantastic !! I couldn’t put the book down !. Fantastic read I couldn’t put the book down ! I’ve read the book twice and it’s fascinating and thrilling to read such a story .. Love and Family is all that truly matters...

The Best Book in One of My Favorite Series. Huzzah!

Love the History!. Waited awhile to read Gabaldon books so I could get ahead of the series..... she can truly touch your heart with just a few words and storylines, just look for them....

If it's possible to fall more in love.... It got off to a slow start at the gathering but in true outlander fashion it was to lay the groundwork for so many things to come. Loved this one so much!

Very enjoyable!. Can't wait to read Book 7

Most boring book EVER. I have never given up on a book I've started until now. I got to chapter 63 & couldn't stomach anymore. I loved the first 4 books; where is that author?! I would love to have her back. This version of her just loves the sound of her own writing so much that she thinks everything she thinks about her characters has to be written in the books. It's all filler! Everything from coughing, bathroom breaks, & breastfeeding to lengthy musings on food preparations, & medical procedures for characters which likely won't ever make a reappearance in the books or be relevant to anything later. Every important thing that happened in this book could have been summed up in a quarter of the pages, perhaps less. There is no need for 111 chapters. Save yourself the trouble and just google this one & move on to the 6th one. I am so frustrated and disappointed.

Soooooooo boring!. I made it through the first three books in a reading frenzy. LOVED them! The fourth (Drums of Autumn) was harder to finish but I persevered. This one; ugh! I give up! Please let the next book take me back to the chemistry, emotion and adventure of the first!

Love this series!!!. So glad a friend told me about this epic series. If you like historical romance it doesn't get any better. The author's descriptive style (including smells!) makes you feel like you're living Claire and Jamie's life.

Absolutely loved this book!. A lot of people have said they had problems getting through this book, but I did not. I enjoyed this book immensely! Diana is a wonderful writer, I’m enjoying reading the series for the first time!

Best ever. Amazingly intelligent, best page turner ever read. Keep tantalizing us!

Stultifying. Dreadful. Done with this series.. At this point, it's like watching paint dry. None of the fun, adventure or interest of the first few books. The book gets worse as it goes on, as does the series. Apparently the author's new intent is to eschew plotting or any attempt to create a story in favor of simply writing thousands and thousands (AND THOUSANDS) of pages of random events and minutiae. Ever hear of actually moving a story to a climax? My 8 year old niece's tales actually go somewhere, lady. And the untranslatable Gaelic -- may as well just write "blah blah blah blah" throughout the book. This was one of the most pointless and unbearably boring books I have ever ever ever read.

Great. Awesome book, books now. They have all kept me engaged with the story. It’s just too good..

Is there a point to this book?. I usually don't write reviews but I must for this one. The first few books ranged from great to enjoyable. This one is almost unbearable. There is no real coherent storyline but just a bunch of events that seem entirely unrelated. I am writing this with 300 e-pages left and I am debating whether to finish it. I am assuming that things will come together in these last pages but the only thing the first 2000 pages managed to accomplish was me no longer caring.

Excellent Read. Great continuation of the story and really enjoyed the different character arcs. Highly recommend.

Just keeps getting better. I love it.

Hooked Line and Sinker. I have reach the first four books 3 times. The first time through I fell so in love with the characters I wanted to quickly find out if they made it through the drama. Some of it was painful to read. But I love these characters so much. Now I'm ready for this one. I'm totally in their world albeit very late for the party as others read these books a decade ago. Having the STARZ original series really helps. They got the characters 100% in the series. I'm traveling to Scotland in a couple of months and making a detour to Inverness as I just have to see where these events were filmed. Love love love this series.

The Fiery Cross. I’m really disappointed in this book. I am about done with it, By pure deturmination I have made it through this. I find nothing of any redeeming value in this story. I hate it when a good series is taken advantage by the author for the pure purpose of adding just another book to the series without spending time in story development. I can’t imagine that the television series will have anything to do with this book. It would be a five minute blip in the televison story line. I really hope that Diana Gabaldon has spent more time with the next book in the series or I’m probably going to move to another series.

Part of the Best. Without question, this is the best series I've ever read; I highly recommend it for anyone who likes time travel, history, and romance. However, do start at the beginning and read "Outlander," continuing in order that the books were written. And then just sit back, get comfy, and savor every word.
