Why obesity? Read this book.. For at least fifty years we’ve all heard so many conflicting ideas of what we should do to eat “healthy food” and not gain weight. Gary Taubes presents the evidence for why so much of that has been wrong, and exactly “Why We Get Fat.” Read this book.

Life Changing. Except for the Holy Bible this book has helped change my life direction. I am so glad my doctor suggested it to me. The medical gurus of today are lying to us in conjunction with the drug companies. This guy shows it and backs it up with data.

Articulate breakdown of food consumption. My new favorite. A must read for anyone who wants the truth about food myths propagated by the agricultural industry.

Life-Changing. I read this book in a day. I am an avid reader, but I hope you realize that reading a three hundred page book in a day means that this book is that interesting. It is an invesigative journalism slash science book, more than a diet book. No, it is not a diet book at all. You will learn how fat is created in your body, and what the necessary raw materials for it are. You will learn why carbohydrate is absolutely required for a person to store any amount of fat at all. You will learn about the viscious spiral of glucose, insulin, and triglycerides. You will learn how we came to get such bad advice from the government and so many health related organizations. You will learn what causes scurvy, and (spoiler) it’s not only a lack of vitamin C. I blog about this topic daily, and I mention this book several times a week. I quote from it extensively on FB posts. There are other books about it, one by Taubes and one by Nina Teicholz that lay out the entire case for dietary fats and condemning dietary carbohydrate. Get this book if you don’t believe it when people tell you that you are fat because you are lazy or because you eat more calories than you expend. Neither of those things are true. Find out for your self why we all get fat, after all two out of three americans are now in the same boat.

It's all about insulin. The best, and most exhaustive, explanations for how insulin works, what it does and how to avoid having it cause us irreparable harm. The research is fascinating.

One idea and too many details.. Honestly this book of almost 300 pages discusses just one idea, even though it is not a new discovery in the field of diet and nutrition this insight of how and why we accumulate fat never been explained in a way that makes it sound logical and rather necessary for a long term weight management.

Solid Science. With all the mumbo jumbo out there regarding nutrition and health, it's refreshing to read this scientific report based in facts. No political, moral or ethical agendas. Well done! Highly recommended.

This book is amazing!. I've been following the eating plan that is laid out in the book and I'm pleasantly surprised. I've lost 20 pounds and more than 5 inches off my waist in about 4 weeks. I don't feel hungry and I love that there is no counting calories or worrying about portions. I feel better, I'm having fewer headaches and less joint pain. It's completely worth the lifestyle change to me.

A help. A helpful and insightful read. Well documented and verifiable. Can be a bit repetitious at times. Not all questions answered (I guess they all can't be), but what about all of the effects of going into ketosis? I'm not sure they're all addressed- bad breath for example. Eating leafy vegetables and vegetables in general is not clear and seems confusing at times. As does the eating of hard cheeses (later in the book told to limit), even though they don't contain carbs. Lastly, this book is written from an evolutionary presupposition. Something we don't all presuppose.

This. Is. Genius.. Turns out that restricting calories and increasing exercise to lose weight, the orthodoxy of the government the last several decades, is nothing more than religion. Here are the facts, here is the evidence. Great read, and now, armed with INFORMATION backed by SCIENCE, I can make informed choices. I couldn't agree more that the medical establishment needs to get up to speed on this. The country depends on it.

100%. 100% right... the law of thermodynamics has been abused and misunderstood but the authors answer to why we get fat is 100% disappointing, I want my money back...

Amazing Information. I never subscribed to low carb diets as anything but bunk. I gave a low carb diet after again filing on another low fat high carb diet and easily lost 20 pounds in a month. I am a believer.

Excellent book. Highly recommended to understand the impact of foods we eat on our bodies. Takes a very empirical and scientific approach, and explains how food works on our biology. I learned quite a bit about what to eat and what not to. An excellent book, and it has given me an unforgettable perspective on nutrition. Thank you for writing this, and debunking many myths.

Life Changing. One of the best books I've ever read! After reading this book and Tim Ferriss's book the Four Hour Body, I've dropped 30 lbs in three months. The only problem w the book is how pissed it's going to make you about how wrong everything you were taught eating healthy is.

Great book!. My doctor recommended this book to me. It does a very good job of explaining what makes us fat. The reason I gave it a 4 though is because the first half of the book "beats a dead horse dead" debunking different theories and common misconceptions... Felt like the author was just trying to fill pages... All in all a good book though!

Wonderfully Informative!!!. I wish I had read this book years ago before I spent years trying fad diets. This book is not about dieting, it's a way of eating right to live long and healthy. I recommend this book to anyone, lean/fat/obese...we all can value from the factual evidence about our eating habits provided in this outstanding book!!!

Fantastic!. I recently lost 53 pounds in six months and kept it off for a year on a carbohydrate restricted diet. This book explains what happened to me. In the course of the year not only has my body transformed into the lean me starving to get out, but I have more energy than I've ever had in my adult life.

Everyone Living Needs this book!. TRUST ME! THIS BOOK WORKS! I could never maintain my weight, but after reading and following Mr. Taubes instructions I have lost 25LBS. I keep the weight off. I read through the reviews, and anyone saying this book dosen't work is WRONG!! People just want to eat carbohydrate foods! That is the only way you can disagree with this book. Trust me I love carbs!!! I love carbs! Giving them up took this book! I recommend it to everyone I know! If you are looking for a gift for a love one, this book is it! For those suffering with cravings, just try a tablespoon of salt. It works! Mr Taubes has changed my life! Everyone at work has noticed the weight I have lost. None of them will try it though. My boss is trying, but it hard. We love carbs, and giving them up is a challenge. I would suggest you start with sweets! Use those zero carb sugars and drink diet sodas. Read every review here on the itunes site! YOU DON"T NEED EXERCISE! Trust me I have slowed my work outs and have NO problem maintaining my weight. I eat when I want even before going to bed!! Freedom. After reading the book from cover-to-cover I feel freedom for the first time in 30 years. His writing style is inviting, open, and fact based in your face logical. He walks us through the myths of fat with clear direction and humor. This book needs to be read by all who are concerned about the growing numbers of obese people around the world. Thank you for writing this history of fat.

The only 'diet' book you'll ever need.. This book logically explains why people get fat and what must be done to become or stay lean. The author is very detail-oriented and masterfully covers the science behind human biochemistry with regards to fat accumulation. The book is well-researched and riddled with a lengthy references section showcasing good scientific practices. Taubes carefully examines the medical literature of the past 150 years and shows the reader the facts with insightful commentary as to why conventional wisdom is completely wrong. All in all, a great read if you wish to truly understand the causal factors of obesity and leanness. Highly recommended.

Now I know why.... I of course, have struggled with my weight all of my life. There have been times that I have starved myself to the point of passing out while mowing the lawn or taking a shower. Even then I would not eat more than a lettuce leaf and a cracker (now knowing this is one of the bad carbs) per day. Even after waking from passing out and a stay in the hospital for dehydration I still would not eat more than the lettuce leaf and cracker because I knew I would gain weight if I did. I lost weight, a lot of weight actually and fast. The problem was that as soon as I would eat more than a lettuce leaf and a cracker I would start to gain the weight back. People around me thought I was hiding and eating. I knew I wasn't but there was no convincing them and I still could not figure out what or how the 'healthy foods' I was eating was making me gain weight so fast not to mention the starving feeling all day. I gave up. My highest weight was 285.6 lbs. Since I have started this new life after reading this book, I have already lost 35 lbs and feel great. With that being said, it's still not easy for me. I'm still wanting fruit especially and will eat a little here and there (berries mostly). Milk has me torn apart every day because I have drank a glass every morning since I can remember....I have started drinking almond milk from Trader Joe's and it's helping. I even froze some with strawberries in it because this brings me to my next weakness, ice cream! I struggle no less and hope that I can get past cravings and remain on this way of living. What has out weighed the cravings is that I'm not feeling like I'm starving myself and I don't ever seem to get hungry (unless I completely skip a meal or not eat anything after breakfast). In short, this book and research makes sense to me and answers so many questions for me. Thank you to the author and scientists.

Galvanizing science. Only a few chapters in and I realized I had to give the low carb lifestyle a chance. After reading this book, I get the feeling that our existing healthcare systems have blinders on. Our healthcare providers owe it to us to stop following all the low-fat dogma and start seriously studying the benefits of a carb restricted diet.
