Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman Book Summary

NOW A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES • #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

With a career, a boyfriend, and a loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the reckless young woman who delivered a suitcase of drug money ten years before. But that past has caught up with her. Convicted and sentenced to fifteen months at the infamous federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, the well-heeled Smith College alumna is now inmate #11187–424—one of the millions of people who disappear “down the rabbit hole” of the American penal system. From her first strip search to her final release, Kerman learns to navigate this strange world with its strictly enforced codes of behavior and arbitrary rules. She meets women from all walks of life, who surprise her with small tokens of generosity, hard words of wisdom, and simple acts of acceptance. Heartbreaking, hilarious, and at times enraging, Kerman’s story offers a rare look into the lives of women in prison—why it is we lock so many away and what happens to them when they’re there.

Praise for Orange Is the New Black

“Fascinating . . . The true subject of this unforgettable book is female bonding and the ties that even bars can’t unbind.”—People (four stars)

“I loved this book. It’s a story rich with humor, pathos, and redemption. What I did not expect from this memoir was the affection, compassion, and even reverence that Piper Kerman demonstrates for all the women she encountered while she was locked away in jail. I will never forget it.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love

“This book is impossible to put down because [Kerman] could be you. Or your best friend. Or your daughter.”—Los Angeles Times

“Moving . . . transcends the memoir genre’s usual self-centeredness to explore how human beings can always surprise you.”—USA Today

“It’s a compelling awakening, and a harrowing one—both for the reader and for Kerman.”—Newsweek.com

You can watch the show. I love this webisode in neflix I watched the first season in two days I was sucked in from the first thing she said. It amazes me as to what these women go through in prison. If the how is amazing I'm guessing the book is as well praise for piper.

Orange is the New Black. I admit that I saw the movie first which greatly deviates from the book. I enjoyed the honesty of the book and its' message. Facing one's own folly, previously viewed as strength is a passage of maturation. Looking at the prison system as a form of plantation encampment is not an idea I've ever entertained. Thank you for awakening a less prejudicial view of crime, criminals and those who spend time in prison.

Not that great. I felt the writing and story was very flat and boring. Her experiences, I think, could have been better written/edited. It seemed all over the place and I found myself skimming to finish it. I've seen the previews of the show, and I think the looks to be entertaining and enjoyable than this book.

This is one of the best I have read in a while!. It's addictive. You won't be able to put it down!

Best book I have read. It's amazing it's like you're in prison with her. It's like you're experiencing those things, and I just couldn't put this book down.

Ehhhh. I had high expectations as I loved the TV series. However it was hard to get past pipers cocky tune throughout the book as she continually reminded us she wasn't better than anyone else, in effect constantly saying just that. There were some good stories but it mostly seemed like a way for her to talk about herself.

Prison Zen.. This book is quite subdued compared to the series. I was hoping to see the same characters. They're in there but much less dramatic. I found this an okay read. It was sad to hear about all the women and the struggles of parenting in prison.

Not as good as the tv show :(. I typically always watch the movie (based on a best selling or otherwise popular book) prior to reading the same story, otherwise I'm usually left disappointed. As we all know, customarily books are better than most movies given the descriptive details contained therein, and therefore it often "ruins" the movie for readers when the film version doesn't live up to the vivid imagery the author has already pre-painted in the reader's mind. However, this is the one and only instance I can recall whereby the opposite occurred for me...the BOOK was actually disappointing in comparison to the television series.

Dabbb. This book is dope. I hate reading ...but good job Kerman

Great read!. Very insightful look into prison life as it really is. Interesting to read the inmate's perspective for a surprising change.

Orange is the new black. Could not stop reading this book or watching the series. Highly recommend!

Orange is the new black. Great book. Hopefully the prison systems have been overhauled.

Amazing. I am in love with this book.

Orange is the New Black. I really enjoyed this book! It is way different than the Netflix Original Series which is based on the book however I believe I enjoyed the book more seeing as how I know it's true!!!

Great book. Excellent. Worth the read.

Orange is the new black. This book was insightful and carried a strong message. As my grandfather, a retired chief of police in NY always said, "no matter what you do that is wrong, you will always get caught." piper got involved in something she didnt realize was illegal until it was too late. Hopefully young people will read it and consider their choices. It was a painful experience for Piper, but a true account of the justice system and a message that when you break the law you lose your right. Good read.

Better than the show. I actually enjoyed the book more than the show and I love the show!

Good stuff but ending blows. The book rocks but the ending blows!!!!

An Important Book Written with A Big Heart. Piper has written a very personal memoir that will open your eyes about our country’s prisons and the individuals who are incarcerated. She has written her story with honesty, grace, and humor. Orange is The New Black is an excellent book filled with sad, anxious, and downright funny occurrences in the daily life of a prisoner.

Engrossing. Best true life work I've read since Cheryl Strayed's "Wild". Fascinating. Highly recommended!

No flow to this read. I was excited to read this book since it was such an interesting topic and since it was a first hand account of prison survival. Unfortunately I found the read disjointed and at many points boring. There were some really great relationships formed during the authors experience, just think the snippets of these stories could have been better written to allow the reader to feel more of an emotional connection to the people involved.

So good, so different from the show. Read it. Before or after the show...doesn't matter. Both are great and totally different from one another.

Insightful and compelling!. A worthwhile read, offering a glimpse of what life is like behind bars.

TV series way better. The TV Series is way better :) my point of view

Excellent!!!. This is a must read; there is no other book like it.

Not really a person who reads much. However, I watched the show and then started wondering what was real and what wasn't! So I decided to read this book. I am not ignorant, but I have probably only read one other book that wasn't required by school or college. This was so worth the read! It left me wanting more details about each prisoner! Mid way you start wondering all these things about each prisoner she encounters!! It is a must read!

Thought provoking and reveals sisterhood among prisoners. This was a great book. I am a huge fan of the Netflix show Orange is the New Black and I decided to give this book a try. Piper Kerman reveals the major flaws in our justice system and makes you question why punishment should comprise of stripping humanity from an individual (especially over petty non violent offenses). Also, Kerman takes you on a journey of compassion among complete strangers and shows the importance of having each other’s backs. This book shares a resemblance to the Netflix series but it’s not identical to the series. The characters were definitely more mellow compared to the animated characters we see in the show. I recommend this book!

Interesting. Brings to light a little bit more of the unknown of Womans prisons

Orange is the new black. This is the second time for reading this book. I am reading it for discussion in book club....to gain greater insight into a woman's life in prison.I found the book truthful and genuinely caring for the women that were part of Piper's time there . It provides for excellent discussion, but more than that an appreciation of what some women must endure. We never know but that we could be one of those women. I thank her for sharing this life story. Cynthia Jackson

Interesting. Incredibly interesting. A unique perspective of the women's prison system. Highly recommend.

In love. I read this book a few years ago when it first came out and I still think about it. I was so excited that a new show was based on it - I binge-watched the show in a few days. Very good read. Read the book then watch the show. Caution: adult content (especially in the show!!!).

captivating. Really interesting book. Much tamer than the Netflix series, which is a bit racy. Was inspired to donate to the prison book projects listed at the end of the book.

Great read!. A fun and easy read.

Orange is the new black. Very long read

Very interesting and entertaining. Definitely one of the best memoirs that I have read. It really got me thinking about the shortcomings of our prison system.

Orange is the new black. Its so fun to find a book you cant put down. Kerman is fresh, insightful and truthful about her life experiences. The book 's narrative made me walk beside her in prison life. How we learn and what we do with our knowlege of our mistakes are certaintly key to our personal development. Helen krug

Truth. After hearing about this book from my daughter who is now in Alderson (where Martha Stewart did her time) I had to get this book. Once I started reading I realized that what my daughter had been telling me was the truth. So much of what she said and what happened to Piper was the same - in 2011. Thanks Piper for all the info that you provided even though it made me sad to read about it knowing that my daughter is going through all that now. My heart is heavy for many of those women in Federal prison for minor drug offenses separated from children, friends and family. Reentry to life is so hard for everyone. As I stand in line to vivid my daughter families discuss how the family does the same time with the prisoner. Great book!

Great to read. Hi

Orange is the new black. Great read, amazing story of life in a woman's prison.

Orange Is the New Black. Not at all what I expected, so much more. Not the horror show but a look inside a women's prison that humanizes the inmates realistically and kindly. Fascinating details of the life inside and how women share and care for each other. educated me about a whole new world. highrecommend thi boo

Worth It!!. Every chapter keep me wanting to read more. I love this book

Not for Me. In the first 5 pages I'm In formed of Pipers low opinion of The Bush administration & , she mentions shes experimented sexual a lot with both boys and girls. This book is not for me. Glad I only sampled.

Don’t come here expecting the show… informative read if you read between the lines!. First of all, if you come to this book thinking it's anything like the amazing Netflix series - stop. It's a good read but an entirely different animal. As this reads, Piper had it fairly good as far as being deprived of freedom & basic human rights goes of course, being white, upper class, etc. However please don't miss the bigger picture. That she and her prison-mates are in large part NOT a danger to society and are locked away for doing things that should be decriminalized. Meanwhile harder criminals get released due to "over-crowding". Piper does alright, making it in with the 'popular' crowd & keeping her nose clean, so to speak. Reading about her experience was interesting enough to keep the pages turning. Reading between the lines, I feel like some of the drama that was made up for the Netflix Series might be more true-to-life in prison life, especially the funding part, as politicians are involved. Overall interesting from many perspectives and I do recommend.

Orange is the New Black. Boring

Best story I've ever read .. This book / show is awesome !

Don't judge a book by its cover!. I thought this book was going to be a comedic look at life behind bars. Oh boy, was I wrong. There is nothing funny about it! I was horrified and mesmerized by what I read. Like a bad car accident I just couldn't look away and put this book down! I had no idea how badly broken and ineffectual our justice and prison systems have become. Thank God Piper Kerman had (and still has) a strong loving family that supported her throughout her ordeal. I felt terrible for these women in prison, they are human beings that we as a society have given up on. I felt better when I read about the advocacy groups out there fighting for change but honestly this book, although very disturbing and distressing, was very good and informative and really opened my eyes to a pervasive problem I did not know existed.

Stumped by all the 5-star ratings. I've tried reading the book - twice and both times couldn't stand it. I even tried the TV series. Not my cup of tea and piper's arrogance over her greatness really put me off. Obviously, I'm in the minority with my rating, but I know what I like and I don't like this book.

Pipes for President!!!. To open one's self up and share this traumatic and intimate experience with the world, takes a brave soul. Piper is just that. We have all done stupid things in our younger years, unfortunately she had to pay the consequences. It was nice to take the journey with her and be enlightened of things you don't hear about concerning the BOP. I, for one, appreciated all the extra info on how to participate in programs from the outside. Apparently this overcrowding nonsense is taking a toll and could be easily avoided. We could take a little time and spend a few dollars to make this experience a little more comfortable for inmates. You never know...it could be me or you being locked up sometime.

Orange is The New Black. Completely raw, entertaining and truth. Great read to pass the time and actually know the reality of U.S prisons. Yes, the book is almost different from the series (drama) but it is also a good read and know what Piper has actually gone through.

Great read!. Such a fantastic book with a great view on our prison systems.

LOVE. I fell in love with the TV series on Netflix, and I absolutely love the book too… The show's only into its first season, but it's phenomenal. In my top 3 favorite shows ever for sure. No second guessing.

What a waste of time!. I bought this book because I enjoyed the Netflix series. It may have inspired the show but it is nothing like it. I kept waiting for something to happen. It doesn't. Don't waste your time. W

God this book is boring. Absolutely nothing interesting happens in this book. What a completely boring account of women's prison. Likely totally realistic in the portrayal of women's prison life in minimum security - the best this book manages is to brush up against something interesting happening.. Waste of time..

Not like the show, but great. I must warn you, if you are looking for a similar story line to the show, then you may be disappointed. The story is not nearly as dramatic, but it is still an amazing story. The show is also amazing, such a great concept

Great great book can't put down. Just worth reading. No words could say how great the story is.

Orange is the New Black. Not enthralling, rather boring; I kept waiting for something to happen but it didn't. Interesting as a memoir and expose of the prison system but this wasn't what I though it would be (and I haven't seen the TV series)

A definite must read for all students....... A real page turner which I devoured in 2 short days. Never having run afoul of the law it was interesting to learn how easily one could find themselves serving time. This book would be very beneficial to our younger generation, the ones who consider themselves to be fire proof. If only one changes their ways because of what they learned by reading this account of the penal system then it will have been a success. One seems to forget that there are women in the prison system, we seem to focus on the men. Very informative and I will definitely recommend this book to all my friends and acquaintances. Thank you Piper for sharing your story.
