The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon Book Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic—both poignant and funny—about a boy with autism who sets out to solve the murder of a neighbor's dog and discovers unexpected truths about himself and the world.

“Disorienting and reorienting the reader to devastating effect.... Suspenseful and harrowing.” —The New York Times Book Review

Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow.

This improbable story of Christopher's quest to investigate the suspicious death of a neighborhood dog makes for one of the most captivating, unusual, and widely heralded novels in recent years.

Curious review. This book reveals a mystery involving a dog that was murdered and the suspects tend to be an autistic child, his family members, his friends, and the next door neighbors. Through this book there are a lot of interesting events that occur and a surprise ending that is definitely worth reading about.

A Little Dishonest. While the protagonist, Christopher, is a bit of a cookie-cutter, stereotypical depiction of an autistic child, the book is still very good. Pathetic prose has rhythm and character, and the use of repetition well highlights Christopher's view of the world around him and how it differs from that of a neurotypical reader. The vignettes fit like puzzle pieces- disorganized and random, but as the story goes on, each unconnected piece (numbered in exclusively prime numbers) slowly clicks into place. I wholeheartedly recommend this book, but caution readers to read critically, and educate yourself on the subject matter before you read.

Made my brain hurt. I am an avid reader, I will read just about anything. I attempted to read this book several times over several months but have finally given up. I understand that the book is written from the viewpoint of an autistic child (that was my initial interest in the book)... However, the way it is written makes it feel... Unorganized, I guess is the best way to word it. I found myself thinking "just get on with it already!" And "what's the point?" Several times throughout the portion of the book that I did read. It seriously made my brain hurt to try to read this.

Excellent. Amazing

Great read. I finished the book in one day and I greatly enjoyed the narrator of the story. He made complex scientific terms somewhat easy to understand.

Not my favorite. I wasn't a huge fan of the book. The author would skew into some other topic in a paragraph, and it was kind of hard to follow. I understand that it from an Autistic point of view but it was just kinda hard to understand what the heck they were talking about in some parts. I found the plot a bit boring too. This book was a little too weird for me. I think "thinkers",and those who enjoy weird and unique books would like this one.

Touching. This story is is a touching tale about a young autistic boy and his journey through life as he is growing and adjusting to the outside, unsheltered world. This book allows you to have insight on the the logical and socially inept mind of an autistic person. Throughout the book the young boy struggles to gain independence and find himself considering an onslaught of "Peyton place"-like drama. A good read for a good laugh and a touching story.

Amazing book. I started this book because I had to read it for summer reading at my high school. With in a few chapters in this book I found myself not wanting to put it away, I could relate to this character so much. Besides the autism I could see so much of myself within the character. I just really started loving a book I wasn't sure I would like because it's still summer but it was a well written novel. ^-^

The curious incident of the night time dog. It was great and pretty interesting

One Disabled Person’s Perspective. I, as a person with a physical disability found the book infuriating and upsetting! I have lived through situations described in this novel. I understand it is supposed to raise awareness for our daily struggle but for me, it only brought back painful memories! I use reading to escape my stress and calm my mind. I will not be finishing the book! Would give 0 stars if I could! I can’t believe my school made this required reading for the summer.

rate of the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime. s'good book. Should read it.

very good book filled with mystery. still one of my favorites!

Great book to get back into reading!!. First book I’ve read in a while, loved it!

Amazing. Honestly I got this book given to me for a school project I thought it would be boring and uninteresting by the title but when I got to reading o couldn't put it down 😌😌

Fine. Childish

My Name is Serenity B.. This is my all-time favorite book. I am a mere age of thirteen years, and have read this book eight and a half times. Not all love it, but I as an individual have gotten lost in the story multiple times.

Beautiful, touching, insightful. Makes you appreciate a fully different perspective. Period. Amazing work and a story of a different mind.

Interesting point of view. The Autistic point of view in this story is one that I can only relate to the movie “Rainman” with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. The Curious Incident… however, like most books does a smashing job of it, MUCH better than any film. I especially liked the train station scene when the policeman says Christopher had been sitting in a transe-like state for hours (when we were reading about the grid game he was playing in his head to calm himself down). I have a new perspective on autism.

Cute Story. If you want an easy read, than this is the book for you. Really cute story. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants a casual weekend read. Quirky little book, and unconventional. Unlike anything I have read before!

I loved it!. This is a great book to read if you want to understand children with autism a little bit better. It gives you a look into the mind of a boy with autism and you can't help but sympathize with him. A couple of times I wanted to hop into this book and help him! Great story!

I loved it!!. The writing made clear images in my head and I was able to understand better through these, the plot is amazing and gets fast paced; which I love. Everything from the plot to the characters is just perfect, I recommend this to any teenagers!

Must read!! 📚. I had to read this book for my English class this coming year. I have to say, the book was amazing!!! If your love murder mysteries or you are okay, I can read it, go for it! The ending is good too. 📚📘 The book has a lot of meaning to it.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. This book honestly was not worth the time I spent reading it. I understand that the author is writing the book from the point of view from an Autistic child, that much he got right. The book would be so much better if he didn't skew into an of topic conversation with himself every paragraph. This makes the plot of the story impossible to understand, comprehend, and enjoy. My advice don't waste your time on this book.

I loved this book. My brother is autistic and some of the things Christopher does and likes and dislikes my brother does too, it reminded me off him a lot. Although Christopher is much more severe than my brother is it's still similar. Also I loved the story line and it always kept you thinking because one chapter you'll be talking about one thing and in another chapter be talking about something completely different. It makes you want to keep reading so you find out what is going to happen.

A different world. A gentle take on a totally different way to see the world. Deeply compassionate.

Loooooooove. Lalalalala love itttt!

Tour de Force. I hope anyone who sees this book will read it. Extremely realistic time in the life of a young person with ASD (asperger's). My grandson is of a similar age to the narrator and they share many, many behaviors and thought processes. I wanted to laugh and cry throughout. Fantastic at showing the agony these kids can go through just facing the most ordinary life situations and the terrible demands on families with Aspies they love. Please be kind and tolerant to people who aren't like you. This book could be easily read by middle schoolers & should be a reading requirement for those with bullying problems.

The ending was beautiful it brought a tear to my eyes!. Quick read easy to get lost in the world of the book.

This book was fantastic!. I loved this book so much, it really teaches you a lot and I hope other people enjoyed it as much as I did.

Great. Great Book, loved it

Really good. It's a limitless hard to follow at first but once you understand it's really a good book

Best book ever!. This is a surprising, original and smart book. Anyone who enjoys challenges and likes to think while reading will find this book really enjoyable. Simple, but complex. Basic, fun, smart. Incredible.

Sort of interesting. It's nice to see inside Christopher's brain & think about things in a different way, but a little more than halfway through the book it tells you the solution to the mystery & your left with filler pages throat are a bit boring, but then the story picks up and ends nicely.

very enjoyable read. well written and engaging characterization

Recommend. Great book! It makes you reflect on family relationships, and brings a whole new understanding to how young adults with high functioning autism see the world.

Lobe it.. It was so good and interesting i recommend it to everyone. ❤️❤️❤️❤️.

Eh. It was good. A little boring at times, and nothing too exciting ever happened, but it was entertaining enough for me on my airplane ride.

Haddon, Mark. “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” Knopf. Appallingly ! I've read the book about my son . I've understood how difficult is his life !

Fantastic read!. This book greatly depicts the journey of a mentally-challenged teenager, Christopher Boone, and his rat, Toby, through a rough time in his life. He believes his mother passed away, deals with comprehension issues, as ends up not trusting the one constant figure in his life, his father. With a fantastic plot twist, the author truly writes the book as if he was the main character in this drama-filled novel.

Great book. Book has a great story on real life situations about an autistic boy who's mother and father are having hard relationships. Must read

Not one of my favorites.. This book although at times entertaining, was not my cup of tea. I did not enjoy the random interruptions from the plot to show diagrams and charts or math equations. I think those elements took away from the premise of the book. With that being said its not that bad of a book, just not one of my preferences.

The incident I read a book with almost no story.. I recently read this book. I somewhat enjoyed the book and I liked how it was written and that it brought light to the difficulties of people living with as-burgers. I was however very in happy worth the amount of plot. Almost nothing happens in this book. A boy who is mentally disabled finds his mother he thought was dead then returns home and is given a dog. Almost no elaboration on the journey itself. This book really needed more story. He needed to have a longer journey or one in more detail. Half the book was just background. I recommend reading this book if you don't have to pay more than $1. For anything more I would leave it and it won't change your life at all.

Any favorite book. this book was deeper than what it seems, i loved every aspect of the book all around.

Amazing. The author did an incredible job! I really enjoyed this novel.

This book is amazing. This book was amazing. 10/10 recommend to anyone who is looking for a book to open there eyes and make them think a little differently than normal which I surely did thanks to Mark Haddon's amazing representation of Christopher.

Boring!. Annoying required reading -__-

lovely book. Really shows the perspective and emotions of the world through an autistic persons mind, truly interesting.

Unexpessible in Words. There seems to be no way that I can truly describe how I feel about this book. I hate it. I absolute despise this book. But the way it is written is so different than any book I've ever read that I love the style but would never tolerate it on any book ever. It was a good read and I couldn't put it down, but I really hated it. Christopher is obviously mentally handicapped and an absolute lunatic. I did not enjoy reading a story from the point of view of an antisocial maniac who's favorite dream is one of people dying, but the story itself was enthralling but predicable. Once you learn what really happens it was easy to deduce who actually killed Wellington, and the rest of the book after that felt rushed and unplanned while the whole rest of the book was at a steady pace. The end of the book felt like it was written with a one day deadline, which made the experience end on a very dissatisfying note.

Outstanding. I can’t think of another book in which I hung on to every word but that’s what happened with this one. If a book makes you laugh and cry while teaching you something you didn’t know before then I recommend it. Sometimes that criteria can be met without a great story, but this story is wonderful. Triumph, determination and the unbending will to do what’s right, bravo.

Good book. This book wonderfully written in how it is through Christopher's eyes. There is a bit of language, but I think that it fits with the setting of the story. This book shows how determined Christopher is to finding out who killed Wellington. This book is a great book for teenagers to read.
