The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch Book Summary

Fantasy meets crime caper in the first book of a landmark, enduringly popular epic series about a roguish group of conmen, which George R. R. Martin has called “fresh, original, and engrossing . . . gorgeously realized.”

An orphan’s life is harsh—and often short—in the mysterious island city of Camorr. But young Locke Lamora dodges relentless danger, becoming a thief under the tutelage of a gifted con artist. As leader of the band of light-fingered brothers known as the Gentlemen Bastards, Locke is soon infamous, fooling even the underworld’s most feared ruler. But in the shadows lurks someone still more ambitious and deadly. Faced with a bloody coup that threatens to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the enemy at his own brutal game—or die trying.

See ya. Glimmers of a creative world are let down by everything else. I’ll still finish a book unless it massively assaults my sense of taste, and this book finally managed to do that by having the most tasteless, boring, and counter-productive uses of violence I have ever read.

Amazing. Great book! It's sequel red seas under red skies Is just as good! And written in the same unique style that only scott lynch has used effectively

Cooo book. Book was cooooo

Sadly a Disappointment. A waste of good character development for a plot that is lazily tied together in the last third of the book and a climax mainly driven by characters that we have no reason to care about since most of the setup is spent on characters that get killed off with no payoff and without doing anything useful. Not a heist book, barely even a thief book considering how little it matters by the end of the story. Not to mention that the author wastes your time with endless flashbacks that are supposed to develop the “important” characters, until they start killing off those characters to the point that the only ones left to do anything for the plot are barely developed at all, and the flashbacks feel like nothing more than a cheap ploy to make me feel like it matters when that character gets immediately gutted in the next chapter. Frankly I don’t even want to read any other books by this author considering how disappointed I am about this one. The world had a lot of potential.

Great Concept and Execution. I loved this book. Lynch brings his world alive with a brilliant cast of characters and a concept that brings the mafia and a group of street-smart criminals to a fantasy setting. The backdrop for the story was interesting, as were the characters. Highly recommended!

Don’t bother to even try. Too many words of nothing that it’s impossible to find or follow a character or story line - can’t even begin to finish

A long and thrilling journey. Very good read, highly recommended

Great read. Engaging and thrilling.

Serious readers will love this!. If you enjoy reading 1000+ (printed) page fantasy, you will love this. Smart, fun, witty, and irreverent...If you devour lengthy fantasy series’ you will be satisfied by this read for sure. I have only read this first book, thus far, yet am confident that the remainder will be solid. The reveiws I've read about the remainder of the series bolster my confidence. Read and enjoy!

Tyrion Lannister + Kvothe = Locke Lamora. This book was fantastic. Lynch does a great job of making you invested in his plots and his characters. For me, having read ASOIAF and The Kingkiller Chronicles before reading this, I feel Locke Lamora’s character is like Tyrion and Kvothe all rolled into one. I enjoyed the flow of this book’s magic system, and history. Present day Camorri society is the initial focus, but as the book progresses, Lynch opens up this world to the reader through flashbacks and asides. Also this books hilarious, and gritty at times. I loved it, and I’m excited to start Book 2: “Red Skies Under Red Seas”.

Not the best. Not the best book i have read to bad

A book of truly evil genius. Great book, the characters bend morality with gleeful abandon and you can't help rooting for these "heroes"(?). Besides the main storyline there are a lot of small unanswered statements and loose threads that make it seem like there is a much bigger story coming. Really looking forward to the next installments

Lies of Locke Lamora. Intriguing world. Fun easy romp through a sweltering city of gangsters and mischief. The action is constant but not overwhelming. Can’t wait to read the next installment

Fantastic. Surprisingly engaging and well-paced for a first time author. Very polished introduction to a pseudo-historical epic series. Great character development, while fast moving--the story never gets bogged down in background.

Great storytelling! Great Characters! Great plots!. Definitely recommended read for anyone who loves non-fiction & fantasy genre. Scott Lynch is a master story-crafter. He creates a believable world with characters you will grow to love and plots within plots that keeps you glued to the book. I bought the paperback version and now I got the ebook just so I can carry it around with me and reread it while waiting for the other 5 books to come out. Scott, please continue creating wonderful stories and tales to keep us enthralled and dreaming. Keep up the great work!

So loved this series. The series was just flat out fantastic! Great characters, great stories, great writing. The worst thing I can say about it is that it leaves you wanting much much more.

Wow!. Best high fantasy book. Should be a standalone. Amazing!

Five stars. I absolutely loved this book. It was fun to read from beginning to end. Do yourself a favor and read it immediately.

An excellent start. I really enjoyed this story, it was engaging amd suspenseful, funny and at times heartbreakingly sad.

Can’t wait to start the next one. One of the greatest books I’ve ever read.

Wow!. Undoubtedly one of the most magnificent stories that I have read in a while. The twists in the plot and the details and banter could not have been more satisfying. This is truly a fantastic piece of literature!

This is a great adventure story.. These gentlemen are fun to read about.

Very good character driven novel. Excellent

Well defined new world, riveting story. Fantastically created and completely spell binding. I'm buying the sequel right now.

Good, not great. I heard a lot of great things about this book, and to be fair, my expectations may have been too high. This is still a decent story. However, I had two big issues which detracted from enjoyment. First, was the excessive wordiness of the author that, at times, felt amateurish. Second, an ending which seemed rushed and conveniently handled. Those things meant to feel like surprises were underwhelming, not surprising, & left me saying, "that's it?". Based off the average, mundane feeling I was left with at the ending, I don't think I'd read another book from this author.

Great book. Amazing read. From Malazan to The Name of the Wind, I’ve read many. This. Book. Is. Awesome.

Hard read at first. I almost gave up on it, don’t mind some jumping back and forth but the first half of this book over did it. With that said like I hung in because to second half of the book was really good.

A Masterpiece. An exceptional masterwork of fiction, thrilling from cover to cover. The Lies of Locke Lamora keeps the reader guessing the entire time, all the while savoring every twist that Lynch weaves.
