The Plague Dogs Book Reviews
The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams Book Summary
This modern-day classic is an unforgettable tale of fantasy and adventure, a powerful exploration of the limits of human cruelty and kindness. A “gripping ... compelling tale of emotional force and high suspense” (The Wall Street Journal).
Rowf, a shaggy black mongrel, and Snitter, a black-and-white fox terrier, are among dozens of animals being cruelly held in a testing facility in North West England. When one of the handlers fails to close Rowf’s cage properly, the two dogs make a daring escape into the English countryside, where they befriend a red fox who helps them survive in the wild.
But as rumors circulate that the dogs may have been the test subjects for biological weapons and could be carrying a terrible plague, they soon find themselves targets of a great dog hunt. Local farmers, politicians, scientists, and even the military join in the search to track them down.

Shockingly sad, but good.. Even though the book is about dogs, every time I would take a break the first thing I would do is find my cat and hold her and show her how much I loved her. I rescued her off the street, and the story of these two dogs and their just made me think of her plight. Reading this book is like watching the ASPCA commercials that break your heart. Innocent dogs trying to survive (and longing for a master and a home) while the humans in the story are all looking out for their own interests. If you've seen the movie, you know the plot, although there are some things they left out from the movie, including a new ending! The author attempts to paint the surrounding area very realistically- the places where the dogs travel are real places in England and the drawings in the book are accurate representations. Also, the area has a distinct accent and the author attempts to mimic the dialect in the book- this can make it difficult to read, but there's a forward with some notes on how to read it and when you have trouble figuring out what the character is saying Read the passage aloud and you'll get a better understanding (its English, but heavily accented). Anyway, there are some slow points, Snitter's hallucinations cause some confusion, but overall it's a well written book, although the story is a horror story for animal lovers.
my favorite book. This is my favorite book of the last 25 years. It covers a range of topics way ahead of its time. Take the time and enjoy one of the best pieces of literature in the last century. Over looked by many this is an animals lovers dream. Hard to read yes, hard to take yes, worth the ending YES. I love this story and everything about it.
Good as movie! :D. I liked the movie itself! While I never read this book, I still think it will be awesome when I read it! :)
