Zone One by Colson Whitehead Book Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Underground Railroad and The Nickel Boys: A pandemic has devastated the planet, sorting humanity into two types: the uninfected and the infected, the living and the living dead. • "One of the best books of the year." —Esquire

After the worst of the plague is over, armed forces stationed in Chinatown’s Fort Wonton have successfully reclaimed the island south of Canal Street—aka Zone One. Mark Spitz is a member of one of the three-person civilian sweeper units tasked with clearing lower Manhattan of the remaining feral zombies. Zone One unfolds over three surreal days in which Spitz is occupied with the mundane mission of straggler removal, the rigors of Post-Apocalyptic Stress Disorder (PASD), and the impossible task of coming to terms with a fallen world. And then things start to go terribly wrong…

At once a chilling horror story and a literary novel by a contemporary master, Zone One is a dazzling portrait of modern civilization in all its wretched, shambling glory.

Beyond brilliant. Whitehead is an excellent writer and story teller. Some might call this a literary zombie tale. It is so much more. Beautifully written and constructed. It brought to my mind a saying of Stephen king’s...it is not the end of the book that’s important, but the journey to get there. Some complain about the dense writing style and intricate sentence structure. I’ll admit that I had to slow down my reading speed to truly comprehend the beauty in the prose. He coveys so much story with an economy of word choice and writing style. This man can write!

Worthy. Worthy of four stars... I enjoyed it. I would have given it five but at times I stumbled through a sea of complicated vocabulary much akin to the sea of dead that appears throughout the story. At times I wanted to say, "OK, I get it! I get it! Enough already!" no need to describe and explain something or a minor detail in ten different ways... But at other times, his level of description works and I found myself delaying bedtime or chores just to finish the current daydream or backstory i was currently living.

Book doesn't grab ya.... I was never really able to get into this book due to its lumbering pacing and overly wordy narration. It's like listening to someone talk on and on and on. At the end you just feel exhausted and glad the conversation is over. It's a shame because it held some promise, but sadly it just couldn't deliver. I found myself wanting to skip portions almost from the get go and that's never good.

100 Words or Less. It’s been months since I read this and I still have dreams about some of the scenes. Not that it’s so terrifying, but that it’s so real; not easy with such a worn-out genre as the zombie apocalypse. Whitehead’s writing is detailed and so beautifully constructed. He casts aside any snark (so often seen nowadays in this subject) and treats it with real emotion. It works. He has somehow found a way to tap into the eternal hope we all have, even when the world is ending. This is a great book in that sense. Truly unique among its peers.

Zone One. Thoughtfully dense, yet ultimately rewarding, this story offers a new perspective on the genre. A great read.

Amazing. I couldn’t put it down!

Inveighs. As the title states, this book attacks you verbally with overly difficult vocabulary. I am a big fan of good imagery, but his descriptions were a bit much. Having to stop every so pages to look up a word breaks up the flow, especially when the word in question was not used contextually well. I truly wanted to love this book as I've been searching for good zombie apocalypse books. Unfortunately my search must continue as this book is mediocre at best. Too much up and down in quality and the ending is foreshadowed too early.

Ready to read it again. I waited anxiously for the book to be released, and read it immediately. Now that several months have passed, I'm getting the urge to read it again---it's that good. Yeah, it helps being a fan of the zombie of genre, and a New Yorker living in the neighborhood where most of the book takes place (I suppose I'm horribly biased), but really it's the combination of a horror story with fantastic writing, that makes it so readable and enjoyable.

Couldn't get into it.. Premise sounded promising. Lost me in the first 15 pages. Could not get going.

An intriguing read. I wanted to love this book. Instead, while I found it mostly engaging and unique, it never truly hooked me because the narrative was so ponderous at times. There are some brilliantly written passages, and it is a nifty take on what passes these days for stories about zombies/the apocalypse, but never did I feel I could not put the book down. A good story, but I was left wanting more.

A good read. Whitehead's vision of life after the collapse of civilization is a pleasant departure from the gore laden zombie genre. From the beginning, I felt connected to the protagonists struggle to cope in a doomed civilization. The parallels to life after this world system were not quickly revealed, but upon their discovery, the story comes together. Whitehead explores the importance, or perhaps, lack thereof of community, personal relationships, and inter personal contact through the lens of one man. In his daily grind, the hero contemplates life before and after the plague and from what I gathered, not a lot has changed. Both depressing and interesting, Zone One is a solid read.

Bleak. Even for a post-apocalyptic tale I found this to be pretty miserable. It does not paint a positive picture of this potential future but it seems more disgusted by the way we live now. None of that holds me back from saying I enjoyed the book... though "enjoy" tastes like the ash of incinerated undead on the tongue. This book is all minutiae & banality until its grandiose conclusion. I really appreciate not feeling like I was being sold the TV or film pitch. If you are a fan of genre or shoe gaze protagonist then I recommend this book.

Ugly. Not very entertaining. I have read much better books by lesser authors.

Good story, Wordy execution. Overall, I enjoyed the concept of the story. However, the author's approach made the read disjointed. There was too much detail and description with every thought and it kept the story from "flowing".

Overwritten but thought provoking. Post apocalyptic fan here. But zombie fiction not my cup of tea. Downloaded Zone One after listening to an interview with the author on NPR. Sounded very personable. Zone One is somewhat autobiographical - intriguing how he threaded pieces of his own story into the book. Its exploration of PASD - how an apocalypse would impact survivors psychologically - renders Zone One worth the read. It ends on a shard of hope - nice. BUT the books debit? Heinously overwritten.

Amazing. What a great story! A zombie apocalypse told partly as a flashback. A beautifully written combination of deeply personal novel, and horror mass market paperback.

Helprin meets zombies. A beautifully written meditation on the city, beauty, and zombies. Winters Tale meets The Walking Dead.

Not bad. Overall not a bad tale. I would prefer a little more of a macro perspective and the ending was foreshadowed quite early. Worth a read even if you aren't a zombie fan.

A great zombie apocalypse novel.. Tip for prospective readers - this book is slow to start - you need to push through the first hundred pages and make it past the author's verbosity and flowery descriptions, and you will be rewarded by an excellent story that goes beyond your usual zombie fare. Immerse yourself in the words and let them wash through you and you will end up with an experience you won't other easily. The ending was confronting and very emotive.

Great!. My first zombie novel, and probably my last. I don't think any other could top this.

So Slow. I loved "The Underground Railroad" so I thought I'd give "Zone One" a try. It is a slow read and somewhat tedious. Not a lot of zombie action and it's hard to develop any feelings for the main character because there is no depth to him.
