Night Film by Marisha Pessl Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY
NPR • Cosmopolitan • Kirkus Reviews • BookPage

A page-turning thriller for readers of Stephen King, Gillian Flynn, and Stieg Larsson, Night Film tells the haunting story of a journalist who becomes obsessed with the mysterious death of a troubled prodigy—the daughter of an iconic, reclusive filmmaker.

On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashley’s life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordova—a man who hasn’t been seen in public for more than thirty years.

For McGrath, another death connected to this seemingly cursed family dynasty seems more than just a coincidence. Though much has been written about Cordova’s dark and unsettling films, very little is known about the man himself.

Driven by revenge, curiosity, and a need for the truth, McGrath, with the aid of two strangers, is drawn deeper and deeper into Cordova’s eerie, hypnotic world.

The last time he got close to exposing the director, McGrath lost his marriage and his career. This time he might lose even more.

Night Film, the gorgeously written, spellbinding new novel by the dazzlingly inventive Marisha Pessl, will hold you in suspense until you turn the final page.

Praise for Night Film

“Night Film has been precision-engineered to be read at high velocity, and its energy would be the envy of any summer blockbuster. Your average writer of thrillers should lust for Pessl’s deft touch with character.”—Joe Hill, The New York Times Book Review

“Mysterious and even a little head-spinning, an amazing act of imagination.”—Dean Baquet, The New York Times Book Review

“Maniacally clever . . . Cordova is a monomaniacal genius who creeps into the darkest crevices of the human psyche. . . . As a study of a great mythmaker, Night Film is an absorbing act of myth-making itself. . . . Dastardly fun . . . The plot feels like an M. C. Escher nightmare about Edgar Allan Poe. . . . You’ll miss your subway stop, let dinner burn and start sleeping with the lights on.”—The Washington Post

“Haunting . . . a suspenseful, sprawling page-turner.”—USA Today

“Entrancing and delightful . . . [a] whipsmart humdinger of a thriller . . . It feels, above all things, new.”—The Boston Globe

“Gripping . . . a masterful puzzle . . . Pessl builds up real suspense.”—Entertainment Weekly

“A very deeply imagined book . . . sprints to an ending that’s equal parts nagging and haunting: What lingers, beyond all the page-turning, is a density of possible clues that leaves you leafing backward, scanning fictional blog comments and newspaper clippings, positive there’s some secret detail that will snap everything into focus.”—New York

“Hypnotic . . . The real and the imaginary, life and art, are dizzyingly distorted not only in a Cordova night film . . . but in Pessl’s own Night Film as well.”—Vanity Fair

Fantastic!. The story, the writing and the style of Night Film is truly awesome. I had a very difficult time putting this novel down. You'll love it :)

Best book in a very long time. I haven't been totally consumed by a book in a very long time. Maybe ever. Until now. Even though I knew it was fiction, within the first 50 pages I found myself googling some of the characters just to make sure they weren't real. And then several hundred pages later, I did it AGAIN. A real tour de force. Well worth your time.

Night Film. Unbelievablely good read. i could not put it down. Congratulations on this book which would make a wonderful film.

Overall---a Disappointment. I was hoping for something better. Atmosphere is good but doesn't really lead anywhere.

Read this book!. Wonderful, imaginative, and far exceeded my expectations. I could not put it down. Great characters, drama, suspense, everything you can ask for in a novel.

Could not put it down!!!. Such a great book! Read it as a summer read but I finished it in two days! Highly recommend.

Best Suspense Novel in a Long Time. Night Film draws you quite willingly through deep, mysteriously dark-night tunnels, twisting you around to lose your way countless times. The mysteries it introduces throw such ranging questions of beliefs, values, and doubts that only enhance and deepen its intrigue. Be sure you download the extra Night Film app to gild your intriguing experience further! Really so much fun to explore these "secrets" within secrets!

Bjue. Compelled to read it to the end. Way too long. Too many threads.

Compelling story, unbelievable dialogue. As much as I enjoyed the plot, the writing itself is no better than good YA fiction, which generally vacillates between erring on the side of too much flourish in an effort to impress or being inanely elementary. What I struggle with most is that although Scott, Nora, and Hopper have distinct voices that fit their respective characters as the author describes them, ancillary characters all have one voice. The author's. Frankly, the voice doesn't always fit character, and therefore the book lacks authenticity. I don't believe the characters so I don't believe the book. Are we truly to think blue collar or lesser educated people speak in formal prose? The eloquent language she gives lesser characters isn't in the ordinary conversational vocabulary of even moderately educated people, and yet I'm supposed to believe the words came from a security guard or an apple farmer? The author either gives too much credit to her characters or too little credit to her readers. Maybe NPR was impressed. I wasn't.

OMG. I'm so into this book, can't put it down. It's amazing how it draws you in, almost immediately, I felt the pull of the city, the characters, the darkness of the situation. Really. Really good. Even though for a while I was getting lost, right along with the character, I liked how it all tied together in the end. It made sense, in an interesting kinda way. Seriously reminded me of other good books like Shadow of the Wind. I recommend this book.

Mesmerizing and terrifying!. I'm in LOVE with this book. I don't think I've read a thriller with so much attention and so much force ever before. It literally haunted me well after I put it down and at times I needed to take little breaks because it got my heart rate up! So k tense and so imaginative. This book sweeps you up in a whirlwind and takes you places you didn't think a book ever could. Truly the most terrifying book I've ever read, and in a brilliant way. A great great read, especially around the time of Halloween and horror films. You will not be able to put this down, I promise!

Night Film. This book was wonderful in the way it sucked me in and had me not wanting to put it down but towards the end I was very tired of the constant running in a maze of clues and reveals that led to nowhere. It reminded me of taking hold of a thread in a woolen sweater and unraveling it until there was nothing left but a pile of woolen thread. In the end there was no end and the writer cheated the reader out of an ending. It was like sex with no climax. Sex that went on for too long trying to achieve an orgasm but without success, leaving you exhausted and just wishing for it to end. When I put my time and energy into anything, I want to feel satisfaction for having done that, instead of feeling I wasted my time. Early on I knew McGrath was being set up by Cordova and that all these people talking to him were orchestrated by Cordova in a real life movie of his creation. I also knew from the time that exchange of a child's soul was mentioned that Sam was the intended victim. There were too many points in the story never explained. For one the look of triumph on Villarde's face when Sam briefly disappeared in the store and his subsequent rush to run away as though he had accomplished his goal and was done with his part in the real life movie. There are many more but I don't feel that this is worth anymore of my valuable time. In summary, this was a book of great promise and great potential, but like a young life cut too short, it did not fulfill what could have been! Instead it became a wheel stuck in a muddy rut, unable to move out but continually spinning and just slinging mud everywhere over and over.

Too ambitious for its own good. This book had some interesting ideas. However, the author didn’t seem to have the talent to fully develop them. Instead, she threw everything and the kitchen sink at the reader, to the point where it was difficult and frustrating to keep track of the plot. The multimedia approach was interesting at first. However, it quickly became more of a gimmick, i felt, designed to mask the author’s lack of talent. I would’ve gladly sacrificed the “websites”and the “magazine articles” in exchange for a tight and coherent story, instead of one that ran the reader around in circles for no discernible reason. I wasn’t terribly impressed.

Re. Night Film. Recently read Special Topics and was intrigued. Night Film is outstanding. Brilliant, insanely imaginative and uniquely creative. Pessl is on the genius track and I can't wait for more. Mjk.

Exceptional story. This book seriously reignited my love for reading. This is a story that stays with you for a long long time !

Night Film e-book fail. Marsha, if you (or your agent or clip service or intern) read this ask your publisher why they undermined your commendable attempt to integrate novels with the on-line world. I would have written this directly to you and Random House if I had your contact info. This rating only applies to the e-book version, and it is not necessarily a shortcoming of iBooks or Apple per se Given the much hyped inclusion of additional Easter Egg material on the Internet, it is mystifying why the publisher did not allow a means to access that material within the e-book. In fact, since you need to use a separate app to scan an icon on the book page, it is really impossible to access the additional material using a single mobile device. Instead you have to use two devices; one to display the e-book and one to scan the the icon into the separate app. Of course, that totally defeats the purpose of having a e-book in the first place. Or was this an attempt to subject the reader to more of Cordova's world of horror.

Spellbinding!. I'm so sad that it ended! I may have to read it again.

Night Flim. This is an interesting story told in way too many words. It is long and drawn out and then reaches an end that is a huge let down. I enjoyed the characters and their stories, but enough is enough.

Ending is HORRIBLE!. What a letdown! The story builds up into a huge question that in the end does not get answered. Waste of time! Plus the pictures in the book hardly go along with what the author is describing. It's almost as if she took some teenage girls facebook selfie pics and put them in her book.

Not impressed. This was another one of those mysteries/thrillers that was amazing in the first 80% and then went askew.

Fabulous read. I was so sorry that this book ended! It is beautifully written, engaging, intriguing and a great story. loved the interactive Internet portion and the way article, pictures and interviews wer sprinkled through this book. I highly recommend this novel, a really great read!

Dull. Half way through, and am so bored....very wordy, and I have a feeling it's really going to be a let down if I ever finish it. Too long.......... Finally finished this....a most painful read in a long time....and extremely disappointing ending. I must have read a different book then the others that have praised this very long, boring read. Wish I could say it got better..

Night Film. Gripping... Entertaining. A very visual and cinematic experience. Thank you Marisha.

Exhilarating exhausting. Wonderful, deep story that I couldn't put down. Great story-telling and highly suspenseful. I spent three days reading non-stop and couldn't believe it was over....now what for Scott McGrath?

Night Film. I was lucky enough to get my hands on an Advance Reader's Copy of the novel. All I have to say is ; MASTERPIECE!! This book is gonna be a huge BESTSELLER!!

Night Film. The best read this year. Spellbinding with mind twisting intrigue. Absolute must read.
