Darth Plagueis: Star Wars by James Luceno Book Summary

He was the most powerful Sith lord who ever lived.
But could he be the only one who never died?

“Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise? It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise that he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create life. He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying.”
—Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith

Darth Plagueis: one of the most brilliant Sith Lords who ever lived. Possessing power is all he desires. Losing it is the only thing he fears. As an apprentice, he embraces the ruthless ways of the Sith. And when the time is right, he destroys his Master—but vows never to suffer the same fate. For like no other disciple of the dark side, Darth Plagueis learns to command the ultimate power . . . over life and death.

Darth Sidious: Plagueis’s chosen apprentice. Under the guidance of his Master, he secretly studies the ways of the Sith, while publicly rising to power in the galactic government, first as Senator, then as Chancellor, and eventually as Emperor.

Darth Plagueis and Darth Sidious, Master and acolyte, target the galaxy for domination—and the Jedi Order for annihilation. But can they defy the merciless Sith tradition? Or will the desire of one to rule supreme, and the dream of the other to live forever, sow the seeds of their destruction?

QwQ. I have not read it but I watched all the movies and Star Wars is a love movie so meh fam liked it

A good Star Wars book but not the best. This book was a good read and I would recommend it. However, the book is more about the intellectual side of how Palpatine becomes emperor and his cunning manipulation of politics rather than about Darth Plageus and his reign as Sith master. If you have read other Star Wars books such as the Darth Bane series or the Grand Admiral Thrawn series you will be disappointed in the lack of action and page turning excitement that those two series had to offer. Again I would still recommend this book to anyone who likes the Star Wars universe but beware before you read it isn't an action packed page turner. 7/10

Great Book!. This was my first Star Wars book, and I downloaded it on a whim to try out iBooks. Now I'm hooked on Star Wars again, can't stop reading them. After reading the book I went back and watched Episode 1. Having this story to go with it adds a ton of depth, and I enjoyed the movie even more than ever.

Wow. They don't write them like this anymore. Really enjoyed this novel. Couldn't put it down. Ties in well with the Prequels but gives it the true Star Wars feel

Definitely worth a read. Besides the fact this story was well written, it makes absolute sense if you follow Star Wars. This book explains a lot and should have been made into a movie/film. It was still exciting using my imagination based off of the visual Star Wars I've seen in the movies/comics. Going back and rewatching the movies, it all makes more sense. This book brings much clarity, versus going in blind as many have in regards to the "Prequels".

One Busy Novel. From start to finish Star Wars Darth Plagueis is filled with action, but not a lot of the lightsaber/blater bolts kind of action that all Star Wars novels have at least some amount of. This story is filled with the brilliant scheming, plotting and political maneuvering of the evil mastermind who is said to be the most powerful Sith Lord who ever lived. The origins of Darth Sidious are explored in this story and-despite the novel's title-I found myself even more engrossed in the development of young Sidious than Darth Plagueis. There turned out to be WAY more story in this book than I ever dreamed. Several characters from Star Wars The Clone Wars such as Onaconda Farr and Mother Talzin made appearances or where mentioned, lots of references to Darth Bane where included throughout the book (and although you can easily follow the story without having read the Darth Bane trilogy I am glad that I had already done so before reading this novel), and I was surprised to see that not only did this story take place before the events of The Phantom Menace but some of the story actually at the time of those events. Also I enjoyed a little more in depth info on the origins of Padme' Amidala whom was named Queen of Naboo in this novel. Among many surprises the one that shocked me most was discovering that Jabba the Hutt can speak basic. I never knew. Over all I would suggest this book to a Star Wars fan, especially one who particularly enjoyed titles like The Phantom Menace and Cloak Of Deception which are greatly more involved in the political side of the Star Wars universe.

Amazing. This book is absolutely amazing. The pacing is perfect and the author gives the perfect amount of detail regarding the characters’ thoughts. 10/10

Quite Impressive. An impressive story. It exceeded my expectations.

Good backstory. Overall, a pretty good book, and worthy expansion to the Star Wars cannon. The highlight here is the origin of Palpatine, which will further add to my enjoyment of the movies the next time I watch them. There are a couple of nits to pick however. One, the book does move rather slowly until we meet Palpatine. Also, the pacing is unbalanced, in that it takes its time weaving the story, almost too slowly at the beginning, then picks up steam, then concludes with an ending that seems ridiculously rushed. Overall though, getting to know Star Wars' ultimate villain makes these flaws worth overlooking, and is a worthy read for Star Wars fans.

Good but not canon. It started a little slow, but once it picked up it was hard to put down. Definitely worth a read for fun, just know it might get rewritten later.

Love it. I wish they could make this canon again or make a movie about this book fantastic book

Excellent.. Felt like I was in the Galactic Senate.

Read it twice was That good!. This was by far the Best star wars book I've read in a Long while. Not only revitalized my overall star wars interest but even read it again jus to make certain I absorbed it & loved it even more 2nd read. If any EU book could invigorate a positive feeling about the Fail prequels this is the book!

Do it. Read this book. A friend of mine asked if I had ever heard the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise — and I hadn’t. He recommended me this book after five minutes of him summarizing his back story. Good read.

Truly the BEST Star Wars book. This book is the most well-written Star Wars book to date. It provides so much information in regard to the Emperor’s backstory. I hope they give Luceno to opportunity to write Supreme Leader Snoke’s backstory.

Young Palpatine. The title of this book should have been Young Palpatine. Yes, the book is technically about Darth Plagueis The Wise, but that's not why you should read it. You should read it to find out how a teenager turned to the dark side only to ruse to emperor, and especially to find out some Sith lore and the machinations that led up to Episode I. A pretty good book overall. My few critiques would be that it starts a bit slow and ends a bit fast, and this version of the book includes so many excerpts of other books at the end that the actual text itself is only 2/3 of what you're buying. That last part thoroughly disappointed me because I was reading the climax of the story thinking, "what's the last 1/3 of the book going to be about?!" Great back story, though. They should make a movie out of this!

Absolutely amazing book!!!. This book is one of my favorite Star Wars books, second only to the Darth Bane trilogy (those are great books). This is awesome book really explains a lot about the first episode. Gets you to look at it with a whole new angle. Great read, BUY THIS!!!

Great. Definitely my favorite Star Wars book to date. Great character development of both Plagueis and Palpatine that adds so many new layers to the mythos surrounding the prequel trilogy. This book actually enhanced my viewing experience of the prequel films. The author also does a wonderful job of incorporating references to the overall Sith plan established by Darth Bane and developed for hundreds of years by each pair of Sith up until the point of Sidious himself. Luceno even tackles the controversial topic of midichlorians and develops the biological basis of the Force into a very interesting plot regarding the origins of Anakin and the scientific side of the Sith. Overall, a great read and a great starting point for new readers to the Star Wars books.

Mind blowing!. I've read a ton of Star Wars novels and this is probably the best one yet. Unlike other SW literature, this book weaves in and out of the movies instead of just telling stories outside them. It's a long book and somehow it still leaves you BEGGING for more. I can't read enough about the Sith now!

Amazing read. A great book about one of the most interesting characters of the Star Wars saga.

Could have been much better. This book is very boring to read, at one point a character goes into a fight against two Jedi and there are just a couple of sentences covering the event and the conclusion of the fight is very confusing. This book is focused more on politics than it is action to the point that there is no action. There is very little learned of the Sith at all.

The best Star Wars book ever written. This is the best Star Wars book I have ever read, and I would put money on it being the best Star Wars novel ever published. Telling the story of Darth Sidious's early life and the great works of the life of his master, Darth Plagueis is hard to put down. It answers many questions left hanging by the prequel trilogy and makes you want to go back and watch Episode I again with all the knowledge you now have about the events before and during the movie. If you thought Sidious was an evil mastermind genius before, you will be totally blown away by the scope of his grand plans after reading this book. If next years Darth Maul book, which is supposed to be a follow up to this tale, is half as good as Darth Plagueis, it will definitely be worth the read.

Great book!!. Honestly I love reading books that connect the dots. While the author couldn't go into a lot of detail, he certainly explained a lot. If I had more time I would read this book over and over again...if you are a sith then you will definitely enjoy this book!! Even if you aren't read it anyways! This book deserves five stars every day of the week and twice on Monday...

Very good story!. This is the first Star Wars book I've ever read, and I have to say this book is awesome. I couldn't stop reading it. The story is from the Sith's point of view which is very interesting since I only watched the movies. I would highly recommend this to any Star Wars fan.

Bland. Just wasn't a good story. Mostly because of Palpatine. This book made me glad that Disney did away with these stories being canonical.

Less about Plagueis more about Sideous. Good read, will encourage watching episodes one and two with a new perspective. Although the book is titled Darth Plagueis, there is just as much writing about Palpatine (borderline more) than the subject of the book.

Amazing Experience. I am surprised at the intricate depth of the Character Darth Plagueis. This book weaves together all the patches of the Star Wars story with a fascinating, intelligent and very exciting style. The vocabulary is whimsically challenging. The story was worth my time. I can’t stop thinking about it.

On. Everything

Darth plagueis. Such a great book I loved it

Hi. I haven’t read it yet.😋😋😋😋😋😋😋

Amazing!. I was positively astounded by how much ground this book covered. Once again I will be forced to view subsequent books and even the films with new eyes. Star Wars: Darth Plagueis connects dots that I had not imagined could be connected and reveals just how deeply involved in shaping events the Sith really were. I am reminded of a line from Emperor Palpatine in Return of the Jedi though I may be paraphrasing: "Everything that has transpired has done so according to my plan". I now see that this is no exaggeration. It seems that almost NOTHING happens without the Sith being involved in some way. I will leave is to anyone planning to read this book to see how. If you haven't read this book yet, you absolutely should! It will take you on quite a ride and give you a new perspective on all the events that follow it, including Episode I - The Phantom Menace.

Confirmed!. There's a book about him? Plagueis = Snoke confirmed!

One of the Best. If it was not for the movies , we would of never got this Supreme novel of the Emperor’s background , machinations and betrayal while upholding the rule of two all along . This story can easily be seen throughout the prequel trilogy . James Luceno must be a Sith . I will say no more , Munns the word .

Awesome. This was by far the best Star Wars book I have ever read. This is a political drama within the backdrop of the Star Wars Galaxy. The author did an excellent job of linking The main characters with the Star Wars movies.

Loved it!. First Star Wars book I've read and it's inspired me to read more.

Good story line. It has a very strong beginning with lots of details about plagueis, towards the middle of the story it became much about Darth Sidious which I didn’t like. Plagueis became a second character.

The Force is not strong with this one. This books reads more like a lesson with a sprinkle of story here and there. The characters have no emotional depth and no interesting connections. Friendships are as deep as a couple of phrases. Adversities are a bit more but often fall to be explained by conveniences of the dark force. Only interesting character dives are the ones regarding Dooku and Maul.

awesome book. It is very well written, and added a lot of knowledge to my brain, about star wars.

A Dark Side Masterpiece. STAR WARS: Darth Plagueis is simply an incredible must-read. The backstory, character development, and intimate explorations of the Force make this book a benchmark against which all other Expanded Universe books must measure up to

I really enjoyed this book. There were so many revelations, it's hard to recall which one was my favorite. I would say coming to find out this story reaches into the timeline of Episode 1 was just awesome!

Fantastic!. This book was so good it almost makes you want to re-watch The Phantom Menace.

The “Rouge One” for “Phantom Menace". This book make “Phantom”, and all the other prequels…better.

Fave Star Wars book ever. This book will make you view The Phantom Menace in a whole new, considerably less crappy light. Darth Plageuis is responsible in a behind-the-scenes way for so many events that happen in the timeline of the 7 movies. Will really give you a sense of the evil brilliance of Palpatine, and the role of Darth Maul as well. SO good. Should be canon.

Darth Plagueis. This was weak! Who ever guides the broader SW universe story line has missed so many opportunities. There was no story here. The basic outline of the story was poor. You come up with nothing after reading this. You think that an author could really run with this potential story, but that does not happen. It is just another disappointment that shows that George Lucas could not really take his story past the first two tails, the original Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back. Don't buy this.

Best Star Wars Book. I've read just about all of the Star Wars books, and this one by far is the best book of them all! I couldn't put it down, the back story of Palpatine has always interested me, but I never knew it could be this good. This is a great piece of the extended universe.

No surprises or twists.... “Darth Plagueis” by James Luceno was good time pass… In this we mostly follow Darth Plagueis, who was mentioned by Darth Sideous in “The Phantom Menace” as his former Sith master. It opens with Plagueis as an apprentice on a mission with his own master, Darth Tenebrous, that ends with a perfect opportunity for the apprentice to murder his master. Then it backtracks to Plagueis’s birth and the beginning of his apprenticeship. He’s a Muun, and his father’s deal with Tenebrous enables him to become a top ranked executive of the banking clan, something Plagueis continues once he’s grown up, hiding his Sith nature from most of the galaxy while he plots and plans and manipulates star systems and other organizations. Eventually he picks up Darth Sideous as his apprentice, and the story becomes split between the two of them. They work almost as partners in manipulating the rest of the galaxy to do their bidding, until an event sends Plagueis into being a hermit, doing Force experiments while leaving Sideous to handle the galactic matters to bring the pair of them to leadership of the whole galaxy. The last quarter or so of it overlaps with the movie, “The Phantom Menace” but the events are seen from a different perspective than the movie. In this we see Darth Sideous getting his chance to become the Sith Master and picking out Count Dooku as his new, temporary apprentice, to last until Anakin is old enough to replace him. Quite a few minor characters were introduced with a confusing array of names and races, but I found it wasn’t necessary to bother keeping track of them to follow the main parts of the story. What was missing was some follow-up on the manipulation of Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas and the creation of the clone army. They were discussed only as a possible strategy the Sith could use, and from the movies we know they come about, but this book fails to complete that thread of the story. Overall I was entertained while I read it. There was no particular surprise or twist towards the end, as we already know what happens afterwards.

The Best. I have read a number of Star Wars books. "Plagueis" is, quite simply, the best of them all. Well written with an engrossing plot from beginning to end. If you wish to learn as much as you can about how the Force works, especially within Sith, this is your book.

Palpatine has never shined so bright!. Never like Senator Palpatine or thought he was lame or just didn't care for him? This book will make you crave more of him. Bravo, Luceno, bravo.

Excellent Read 10/10 Recommend. An excellent read that truly developes Palpatine’s character. To be provided with the visual of the young senator and his growth over the years, is very entertaining. If you’re a sith fan, this is a MUST. Read.

The Tragedy. "Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plaguies the Wise?" From Palpatines smirk while telling the story in Revenge Of The Sith, fans were curious in the character who was heavily implied to be Sideous' own master. Star Wars is a grand space opera, and this is a piece of it's history you don't want to miss! It tells not only the story of Darth Plagueis but introduces us to a young Palpatine and shows us his rise to power. If you've ever been interested in politics in Star Wars or how the Empire came to be, this is the backstory for you!

Great Book. An exceptionally written story about the shadowy past of the sith.

Best. So far the best Star Wars book ever made Highly recommend the republic commando series
