Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence Book Summary

BOOK ONE IN THE BROKEN EMPIRE TRILOGY

“Prince of Thorns deserves attention as the work of an iconoclast who seems determined to turn that familiar thing, Medievalesque Fantasy Trilogy, entirely on its head.”—Locus

When he was nine, he watched as his mother and brother were killed before him. By the time he was thirteen, he was the leader of a band of bloodthirsty thugs. By fifteen, he intends to be king...

It’s time for Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath to return to the castle he turned his back on, to take what’s rightfully his. Since the day he hung pinned on the thorns of a briar patch and watched Count Renar’s men slaughter his mother and young brother, Jorg has been driven to vent his rage. Life and death are no more than a game to him—and he has nothing left to lose.

But treachery awaits him in his father’s castle. Treachery and dark magic. No matter how fierce his will, can one young man conquer enemies with power beyond his imagining?

Loved it!!!. Great writing!!! Dark story, anti-hero.

Dark and Violent. I just bought this book, and it is amazing to the point of me staying up all night to finish it. But i wish itunes had the audio book too, just so i can be able listen and see if i miss anything while speeding through it

Amazing. The story has some amazing twists but more importantly you love the character. He's clever yet extremely bold. Even at the very end you'll think,"what is he going to do next". Amazing read

Feeling Cheated. A review mentioned name of the wind as a good comparison to guage a reader's response to prince of thorns. I have to disagree. I did this book and the authors style..it is dark, twisted and sharp. It is the style and tone that hides a shallowness that only quickens as the reader approaches the end of this short book. There is much promise here but I am left thinking that this book is more proof of concept, a first draft, broad treatment left on a editor's desk and mistakenly sent to press unfinished. In the end that style, that wit feels like a gimmick as the author cuts to the resolution of each conflict with deus ex machina or some as yet unkown mystery plot line proving in the end to be the device winning the day and not the main characters cunning. I am left unsatisfied and feeling a bit cheated paying a premium $12 for this ibook.

Fantastic. Unique, dark and amazing series. Writing is excellent, funny and engaging. Top marks.

Cripplingly dark excellence. For those of you tired of amoral protagonists in your fantasy novels, here is one who is unrelentingly evil. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Wow a great read. I bought this on a whim my only regret is I didn't buy it sooner. Think The Dark Tower meets a twisted Enders Game and you have this. An excellent read a must read novel that's fast paced and never dull.

Shallow and forgettable. There was no scale to the story. The main character would decide to go somewhere and then he was there. He would decide to do some impossible task and within a paragraph would have a solution. I won't remember this book next week nor will I finish the series.

Strange writing style.. The story line had a lot of potential in a dark, twisted depressing sort of way but disliked much of the author's writing style.

Unsure. Made to page 160ish out of 185. Had to stop reading. I know this isn’t a hero story. He has no loyalty. He kills friends for speaking against him. The one that that gets close to it he does nothing too. He turns from the real enemy to go after count. If you are board it’s something to pass the time but it’s not a story that drags you in.

Different, Exciting, Brutal. If you are looking for high fantasy reminiscent of Salvatore, Jordan, and Tolkien you will not find it here. If you want a palate cleanser from traditional tropes of heroism, then welcome home. Jorg Ancranth, a truly powerful figure in fantasy that can’t be easily placed anywhere on the standard Chaotic, Neutral, Good matrix of character morality, leads a band of of brothers who themselves are neutral on their best days. He is an unstoppable force that brings immovable objects to their knees through sheer ruthlessness and deviousness. While not perfectly evil, Jorg is unstoppable with every one of his actions perfectly reflective of his backstory and who he is as a person. If you want a solid story, in a new world, told from the perspective of an ambitious, conniving anti-hero, read these books.

More like Prince of Bores. I can't believe these outstanding five star reviews. This book is terrible. It is the worst book I've ever listened to. The only reason I finished it is because I had it as an audio book. The main character is static and boring. It doesn't bother me that he is evil, but he's just too arrogant and cocky to relate to. There really isn't one believable character in this book. It's sad that crap like this gets published. What a waste of time and money. Do yourself a favor and read Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun. It's a first person tale written in way better prose.

WotW hole.. This is a very good read, albeit very dark, but with under tones that emphasize humanity, especially towards the end. Very good storyline, complex plot, interesting style, entertaining dialogue, and strong action. If you liked The Name of the Wind, The Warded Man, or the Night Angel trilogy, you will enjoy this book.

One Note Story and Main Character. I was intrigued with the premise of this book, a fantasy novel featuring an anti-hero prince. I thought it would be an interesting departure from the normal good versus evil trope. And at first I really liked it. But halfway through this book and well into the second, I just became bored. I think the problem is that the main character is so selfish and single-minded, so prone to violence without much depth to him, he became a two-dimensional character. He is cunning and smart without any real reason why. And he is surrounded by so many other deplorable characters... his evil father, heartless stepmother, a band of degenerates.... it became too one note. None of the characters have depth, all cardboard players in a very thin plot and story. I started to not care about any of them. So I stopped reading the second book and regretted buying any of them.

Blown away!. Wow! I don’t have words for this book. Everything I thought I knew in the first half is completely turned around in the second half. This book is dark, engaging, gruesome, funny, intelligent, engrossing, all the things. There was so much happening in the story and the world-building, but I was still so drawn to the brilliant and complex character study of Prince Jorg throughout the whole book. Can’t wait to read King of Thorns!!

Now this is what I call a page turner.... Wow! This is not what I expected. I could not stop reading. I finished this book within a couple of hours after I started. Yes, it is one twisted dark fantasy, but its not over-the-top. It combines post apocalyptic horror with a gothic idea of magic, and it has the audacity to misquote Shakespeare. I loved it and cannot wait for second book. Thank you Mr Lawrence for broadening my horizon.

Prince Of Thorns. Amazing... Fast paced and a great start to a trilogy!

Truly unique read!. Not your same old fantasy. The main character is truly evil but you will find yourself routing for him. Reminiscent of Joe abacrombie at his best.

Cool. Awesome book! I don't read much but this book I actually enjoyed!! Looking forward to king or thorns and the next!!

Prince of Thorns. Really fast read. Action and suspense rarely let up. One of the best books I have ever read.

Amazing. This book is great it is simply stellar

Machiavelli's Prince takes shape in the distant future.... Should one ever be an admirer of corruption so terrible that closes fast upon the domain of evil? Should forgiveness be forthcoming if the corruption leading to evil action is borne of suffering and pain? Find your own answer within the authors unique channeling of Machiavelli's "The Prince"; the backdrop of which is a post-apocalyptic world where degenerate feudalism holds sway and our own world is simpler, more pleasant, and long gone away past. Imagine another, more gritty chapter having a place within Leibowitz's Canticle. A FANTASTIC approach to a simple and uncomplicated story that leaves one awaiting anxiously its next installments

Horrific. Literally opens with the lead 13 year old boy raping two girls and then setting them on fire.

Great read. I love the way that these books were written and totally introduced me to an entirely different t type of hero.

Base and not worth your time or money. A morally low book if I’ve ever found one. I kept reading past the beginning hoping that there would be something of redeeming value in this book but there’s not. I can’t speak for the whole book because I only read the first ten percent but nothing later in the book would redeem that beginning. What’s more, I had the sense that it would only get worse from there.

Great villain protagonist. Jorg is a boss

Literally the BEST book out there.. I love the book. I just started reading it a few days ago and the whole dialogue and message inside it gives readers a deep feel inside of it. Like it actually FEELS real and all. I would DEFINITELY recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy and sci-fi and medieval and such. Really good book.

Little bit of everything. Decent book overall. I got a little lost at times with the random mix of magic, illusions, mind control, and modern/futuristic technology though. But it is a fantasy novel so I guess you can’t really complain. Think of Fallout mixed with game of thrones but with less monsters.

Never got off the ground. I know others really enjoyed this book, but the story never took off for me. There were a couple of moments where I thought “finally we’re about to get interesting” and then it was back to boring. The potential was there. The execution was not.

Prince of Depressing. If you like Stories about Dark, unlikable, heroes then Prince of Thorns is for you. Misery apon misery in a spiral of dispare that draws you from beginning to end hoping for a glimmer of redemption. Maybe I won’t find it in the next book but I have to find out.

Pretty good book. I’ve read through the series a few times and it is one of my favorite trilogies. I really like the way that the author brings you into the character of the person.

Prince of thorns. Great book, well written. Gives the reader a first person perspective of the character and the sorrows he has experienced and how he is currently battling his inner demons. Vivid fight scenes that draw you in and make you want to read it all in one sitting.

Thorn of whatever. Too much filler, the story went off in un related rants. Too bad because the story could have been way better if it had been edited.

Garbage. This book makes absolutely zero sense it’d like a crack head wrote it and everything going on in their head is put onto pages terrible
