Mile 81 by Stephen King Book Summary

Mile 81 is Stand by Me meets Christine—the story of an insatiable car and a heroic kid.

At Mile 81 on the Maine turnpike is a boarded up rest stop, a place where high school kids drink and get into the kind of trouble high school kids have always gotten into. It’s the place where Pete Simmons goes when his older brother, who’s supposed to be looking out for him, heads off to the gravel pit to play “paratroopers over the side.” Pete, armed only with the magnifying glass he got for his tenth birthday, finds a discarded bottle of vodka in the boarded up burger shack and drinks enough to pass out.

Not much later, a mud-covered station wagon (which is strange because there hadn’t been any rain in New England for over a week) veers into the Mile 81 rest area, ignoring the sign that says “closed, no services.” The driver’s door opens but nobody gets out.

Doug Clayton, an insurance man from Bangor, is driving his Prius to a conference in Portland. On the backseat are his briefcase and suitcase and in the passenger bucket is a King James Bible, what Doug calls “the ultimate insurance manual,” but it isn’t going to save Doug when he decides to be the Good Samaritan and help the guy in the broken down wagon. He pulls up behind it, puts on his four-ways, and then notices that the wagon has no plates.

Ten minutes later, Julianne Vernon, pulling a horse trailer, spots the Prius and the wagon, and pulls over. Julianne finds Doug Clayton’s cracked cell phone near the wagon door – and gets too close herself. By the time Pete Simmons wakes up from his vodka nap, there are a half a dozen cars at the Mile 81 rest stop. Two kids – Rachel and Blake Lussier – and one horse named Deedee are the only living left. Unless you maybe count the wagon.

Mile 81. The story was very good, but I paid $3.99 for a 157 page ebook. S. King is off my list from now on.

Mile 81. This was great work

Great short. A great short story that had me on the edge of my seat the whole time wondering what was going to happen. I only wish it was longer !

Excellent Novella. Read the sample, bought the iBook. Reminiscent of King’s earlier superb works; a combination of ‘It’ and ‘The Body.’

Stephen King's Short Stories Are The Best. Another great short story by the master. Think The Body (Stand by Me) meets Christine.

Boo. Poor writing for an otherwise talented author

So good!. I love this book! ❤️ My dad told me about it when I was little. I haven't touched a strangers car sense. 😂 It was great to finally read it

I was expecting a whole book. Not 200 pages and done!. Not pleased at all

Don't Buy. Ok, it is King, and it is an entertaining story. BUT IT IS A SHORT STORY NOT A BOOK. Whats worse is that about 25% is just a preview for 11/23/66. DAMNED RIPOFF! I'm gonna ask for a refund

Great short story!!. Love the flow of this story!

Mile 81. Short story. Not worth the money I spent

Who Knew a Car Could be Terrifying?. I read this in King’s compilation of short stories “Bazaar of Bad Dreams”. It was the first story in the book and left a solid impression for the rest. This story is not only gruesome and creepy, it has that fantastic touch of the supernatural that I’ve come to love of King. There were several characters that came in and out of this short story, but King developed all of them perfectly which made their dire circumstances all the more chilling. I would even say it is the perfect story to read for any writer struggling with how to portray a character. Read it.

Too short for the $. Good writing but only about 60 pages!??

Not King's best.. I found this to be slightly boring and not very scary/thrilling. It was a quick read and fairly inexpensive. Not one of Stephen King's best. I'd say... Don't waste the money. Save up for one of his better books.

Great till the end. I was really getting into this story then all of a sudden, it was over.

The story that started off an incredible collection!. WARNING: Before you buy this book, READ THE REVIEWS!!! Some have been disappointed to find out that this is just a short story, not a full-length book. As a result, some of the reviews for this story have been unfair because they have been complaints that it wasn’t a novel or novella. Well, guess what, folks?? For years, it has been okay to publish short stories as individual books. I’m not crazy about it myself, but I won’t insult a short story that happens to have been a perfectly good story just because it was published individually. This story, as mentioned by another reviewer, is the first story in Stephen King’s short story collection The Bazaar of Bad Dreams. If you like this story but you don’t want it by itself, buy the “Bazaar” collection so you can review the entire book, this story included, but don’t write a review of this book just to bellyache about it being just one story by itself. Fans HATE that!!! I do, that’s for certain! For me, I have to agree with all of the positive reviews for this story. I’ve never read the book by itself because I don’t want to read ANY short story this way, but I really loved this story! It was a great start to The Bazaar of Bad Dreams, a masterful collection of short stories made even better by the fact that while King tried to scare readers with every story, he succeeded even more brilliantly with some than he did with others. This creepy, perverse story of a car that is actually some sort of strange, bloodthirsty monster in disguise was a perfect opener to an exciting collection and, for me, the biggest reason is because I got a terrifying taste of disturbingly chilling and creepy I knew some of the stories would be. And it was an awesome decision to cast a little boy as the main character. The bravery and courage of children who are ten years or older somehow strikes me as being totally conceivable that they could be very heroic in some very dangerous and scary situations. This is one of the scariest stories from King’s wonderful collection but, as any other King fan could also tell you, there are several other contenders. To me, Bad Little Kid, The Dune, The Little Green God of Agony, and That Bus is Another World are also real nightmares that I think could provide plenty of sleepless nights for those who are interested in reading Stephen King’s The Bazaar of Bad Dreams. And not just because you can’t get enough of the book!!! I recommend reading this if you’re a fan of the King of Horror who is considering whether or not to read his short story collection. Just remember, though. You’ve been warned: You just might lose sleep even after you’ve FINISHED this story!

What was it?. What was it? A sponsored ad for Apple and AT&T? Mr. King has fallen very low...

Evil Station Wagon..... Definitely a good read! Shorter than many books of kings, but I count it as a short story. I highly recommend it if you just wanna pass the time and be amused and shocked at the same time. Amazed by the mind of King!

Rip off. The book is too short. Too much money for a short story!

Great read!. I just love his work.

Mile 81. This book was ok. It started out exciting then flopped at the end. Glad I only paid 3.99, sorry...

Pretty Good for a short. Pretty good for a short, but not enough time to develop characters. Buy this with the knowledge that it is definitely a Short Story, NOT a novella.

Great Book!!!!!. This book is great!!!!! I wish it would have been longer!

Mile 81. I just finished the sample and I guess it was okay. But with saying that, I believe that you have to read the WHOLE thing to get the WHOLE picture. I might buy it. Stephen King has written many masterpieces and this could be another.

Another King gem. Mile 81 ranks right up there with "N" and "UR" as one of King's great shorts. My only problem with his short stories is they are so good you want want them to be longer.

Not well written. This is definitely a product of King, but not a good one.

Wow. It is really hard to wrap my head around this book. 👍👍

Highway to Hell. A great short story by King. I read it in one sitting. I could compare it to two of his previous full length novels but I don't want to give anything away. I read this without knowing the premise and I'm really glad I did... I never saw it coming 😉

Wanted more. Was a little disappointed in ended so quickly, and without further explanation. But it was creepy and I did enjoy it.

Fresh Air. This is a wonderfully creepy little short story that just makes me love Stephen King AND iBooks all the more! Maybe one dollar less would be the best price for something like this, but it's still quality entertainment however you cut it.

Another winner by Stephen King. Awesome read!

Mile 81. This book was kinda disappointing, but sometimes it's like that I guess. The previews of new book was cool.

Eh.... Not a bad story, but definitely not worth the price. Spend the extra $ on one of his longer works.

Loved it!. King did it again, one of his best I couldn't put it down !!!!

Amazing. This book was literally the best book I had ever read in my life, it kept me awake at night wondering what was going to happen next.

Mile 81. Don't wast your $.

Loved it!. I read this story in the book After Sunset and it was one of my favorites then and still is now. Will read over and over again.

Very short quick read but still pretty entertaining. Seemed to get enough bang for my buck. Nice short story in one read.

Not a bad read. Interesting story line...but very short!

Waste of Money and Time. I think I just wasted 14.95 for one really bad short story. I thought it was at least a collection but it was not. Been a fan for a long time and feel cheated.

Good story, but……. Good story! except it just stopped at the end.not worth the price!

Mile 81. VERY good read! Classic King

Waste. Sorry, but this was a waist of time. I read the whole book and the ending was rediculous. I’m almost doubting Stephen King wrote it.

Mile 81. Peeked my interest from the beginning but, the ending wasn't an ending. It was like you stopped writing.

81. As always Stephen King's incredible story telling excels. Great tale again.

Mile 81. I enjoyed reading this book but was very disappointed with the ending. I didn’t like the end. I thought it was pointed and explain a lot.

Those damned cars. Kings short stories are the best.

Damned fine story. Enjoyed this book!!!

2-Star writing. I only give this story 2 stars because the ending was so abrupt I flipped back a few pages to make sure I hadn't missed anything. Turns out, I didn't. This was a cliffhanger that leaves you with more question than you started with when you began reading the book. It's definitely not worth the $3 I paid to read it. Don't waste your money.

Classic King. This is a typical King novella. A young boy is on a spooky adventure. The story contains a strange car that eats people and young kids. Quite the gothic tale. If you like Stephen King you'll like this, but beware it is short.

Good but bad!!. I enjoyed the book...But he should have kept it and put it in a book with other short stories!! Ended too quickly!! I didn't think it was worth the money!!

Awful. I love Stephen King and I have read everything he has ever published, but this one was phoned in. A silly plot with the worst ending I have ever seen King produce - and endings are not exactly his strength. Save your money and go try to thread bailing twine through the eye of a needle. It'll be cheaper and ultimately less frustrating.

A fun read. I enjoyed this story. It is a short story about an abandoned rest stop off I-95.

Short, but entertaining. I enjoyed this quick read.

Mile 81. Bizarre. Liked the first chapter but continued to lose interest as the story "developed". Ending was far too quick - like King just decided to stop writing this one and took the easy way out.

Mike 81. I have the original in hard copy from (? when?) Loved it then and still do!

Mile 81. Classic Stephen King. Good story with an ending that leaves you wondering.

What?!. What?! It's like 250 pages long. Mr King you only wrote the intro! Where's the middle? Where's the ending? What a letdown:(

Good. Good little book!

He's still at it.... As usual, another 'can't put it down' book by Mr. King. As a regular reader of his version of the macabre, he can take a simple story and turn it into great horror. Short, sweet and to the point. You will not be disappointed.

Blech.... Story was really short, ended abruptly and defiantly not worth the three dollars

1963!. It was a year to remember. These is a nice piece of writing Mr. King. I wonder what will happen when we finally break this barrier of traveling back or even forward in time?

Epic form epic games. Super dank the van should be an scp like the “living”room though still super cool

Anita Pilgrim. Classic King.. Love it! Several stories packed into one big mystery... keeps you wondering what's going to happen next!
