Outlaw Platoon by Sean Parnell & John Bruning Book Summary

A riveting story of American fighting men, Outlaw Platoon is Lieutenant Sean Parnell’s stunning personal account of the legendary U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division’s heroic stand in the mountains of Afghanistan.

Acclaimed for its vivid, poignant, and honest recreation of sixteen brutal months of nearly continuous battle in the deadly Hindu Kesh, Outlaw Platoon is a Band of Brothers or We Were Soldiers Once and Young for the early 21st century—an action-packed, highly emotional true story of enormous sacrifice and bravery.

A magnificent account of heroes, renegades, infidels, and brothers, it stands with Sebastian Junger’s War as one of the most important books to yet emerge from the heat, smoke, and fire of America’s War in Afghanistan.

Awesome. Amazing story of what them Men went through

Outlaw Platoon. This a very well written book. If this depicts the attitude and commitment of the real American soldier, their enemies must take note of this dedication and reconsider taking them on!

Humbled. Thank you. These words seem so small but I do appreciate the sacrifices you and the other men and women of the US military have made for those of us back home. God Bless you all. Thank you for this book to bring to life the bravery and devotion the men of Outlaw Platoon, and so many like it, have displayed.

The smells never leave. Sean, Thank you. Stories need to be told. No matter how difficult. We owe it to those that will never speak again. Joseph F Morgan Maj. US Army (ret.)

Well written story of the best of American individuals.. Great and humbling reading.

Outlaws. F-ing Awesome Read. Someone finally tells it like it is. Even the ugly truth of politics inside a company and the P O S’s Officer’s and NCO’s in the army. We had ours. Lt. thanks for writing this book. HOOAH

Thank You!. Very good read! Been there done that a few times and you're never the same. Thank you Outlaw Platoon, you are America's best!

Incredible!!. It is a rollercoaster from the beginning until the very end. It invoked my full spectrum of emotions and I am even more thankful for our service members after reading about the incredible and sometimes heartbreaking experiences of Outlaw Platoon.

Story of Combat and Brotherhood at its best. I read nightly to help me fall asleep and I solely read about war, mainly conflict in the Middle East, as its an incredible weight that soldiers who have been in combat carry for the rest of their lives. This book will be the reason I re-up to give and serves as these men did. I’m a far better soldier and leader after reading this thank you.

Outlaw Platoon. This was a fantastic read! It was so captivating and graphic, that I felt as if I was right there on the battlefield with the author. But even more impressive was the author's ability to convey the emotional struggle that he went through in trying to cope with the necessary changes he was forced to make in order to survive and be an effective leader. Might have been the best non-fiction book I read in quite sometime. A. Drucker

Excellent. Excellent! Had my heart racing and my gut wrenching at moments.

Outstanding. This book is riveting and hard to put down. It seems that there are so many books on the topic about special forces. This book sheds light on the troops that do the true day to day heavy lifting in combat. It shows their professionalism and bond. This book made me even more proud to be an American. Thank you Sean and Outlaw Platoon for your service and for sharing your story.

Nail biting. A true testimony of leadership, dedication, commitment, unity, selflessness and outstanding courage. It's rare to read a novel that keeps you wanting to turn the next page hoping you never run out of pages. I must extend my extreme appreciation to the men of outlaw platoon who meritoriously served this country and the desperate people of Afghanistan with a commitment only outranked by a nurturing mother. To the author, writer and publisher I say "excellent job and a wonderful tribute to all who has made the ultimate sacrifice that made such an excellent story known". It is certainly a book I will read and read again.

Thank you. Great book! It made me feel for moment as part of Outlaw Platoon! It refreshed my army days and camaraderie we shared that I will never forget! Thank you!

War, honor, sacrifice & Brother’s bonded by love for each other.. A gripping account of the war in Afghanistan brought on by the terrorist attack on 9/11 that killed over 2,000 innocent Americans.

Excellent !!!. Well written and very easy to become connected. Technically accurate and the reader will find a hard edge honesty about most everything in the book. Every time I took a break from reading, I felt exhausted, only to immediately have that overwhelming desire to resume reading. Worth the purchase and will remain a part of your library.

Outlaw Platoon. Excellent read. These guys were true heroes, and patriots.

Powerful. Must read. Speechless

Outstanding!. This book had me gripped from the get go. It isn't normally the type of book I would pick up but I am so glad I did. It's rendition of what these men and women face to protect our freedom and country is incredible. As a person that is so far removed from the situation in the Middle East this was amazingly eye opening. These people serve our country in ways I cannot even fathom. I am more grateful than ever for what they go through for us. An excellent, eye opening read that allows one to see through the eyes and hearts of the men of Outlaw Platoon. Highly recommended.

Great Book. It is a great book. Very well written.

Outlaw Platoon. A true page turner, masterfully written. Heart wrenching yet inspirational.

Beyond amazing. Outlaw platoon was definitely touching and inspiring. One of the best books I've read and for sure could not put the book down. It touched my heart and soul in ways I never thought to be touched. Forever in my heart the men that died for our country and gave their all to the very last and to those that went home safely, as well forever in my heart. God Bless you all for this amazing book.

Outlaw Platoon. Great read. I could not put the book down once I began reading. It truly allows you to understand the dangers that our military faces. It is easy to understand and really captures it's audience.

Good.. Enjoyed the leadership role.

Great read!. Hands down one of the best books I have read! I have always been more into the WWII era but this book definitly earned a positive feedback

Outlaw Platoon. Outlaw Platoon is a raw and honest look into the heart of a band of brothers. The courage and sacrifice of men who are bonded by the brotherhood of war and inspired to be fierce warriors out of love for each other. Thank you Sean Parnell for this intimate account of your service and the men of Outlaw.

Outlaw Platoon. A gritty writing of combat and the effects of the human psyche. It tells the true emotions of what is felt but frequently left unsaid. Outlaw Platoon also depicts the lopsided combat setting that American warriors must face while fighting with one arm held behind their back as so called allies aid the enemy. Good book and one that should be required reading to future leaders. Great job Sean and the Outlaws.

OIF Vet. A raw look at war in Afghanistan and readjusting to civilian life.

Outlaw platoon. This book is a great read. As a soldier myself, I had goose bumps more than once during this read. Good bless outlaw platoon.

A Page Turner. Never a dull moment. Nothing superfluous is written, it's hardcore from start to finish. The authors do a great job of setting up the battles by providing context and relevant historical perspective. In the battles you almost feel as if you are there with these brave men.

As An Infantry Officer. This book is my inspiration to lead men in combat. I only hope to one day live up to the expectations that Sean Parnell has established for Infantry Officers in our Army.

Salute to our Military-AWESOME. Truly something of a story to be told and movied as the American Sniper. Awesome story of willpower, teamwork and power to do right. And the need for American justice over horrific mindsets of people and governments with no since of human rights.

Must read!!. A phenomenal story! If you enjoy war stories, this is certainly a must read for you. Loved reading about the hierarchy of the US Armed Forces and the responsibilities, pressures, and difficulty of being a platoon leader. I give it 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 and thank you for your service to our country!

A fine work. The author somehow seamlessly integrates countless orthogonal elements into a cohesive whole in this book; a literal metaphor for the real life equivalent of his Outlaw platoon. He works wonders with his subjects, animating them with a literary talent that becomes even more apparent on successive reads. If Parnell's insight and sentiments about his men are based on reflections developed even only in part while serving as their commander, his men were blessed by the presence of true leadership during their time in hell. So many others who step forward and raise their right hands at crucial times should be as fortunate. A belated, hearty 'well done' to the author for a fine piece of work.

Good read. Really enjoyed reading this. Couldn't put it down. I rarely start and finish a book in a weekend but the action is fast-paced and kept me wanting to know what happened next.

Truly heroes. This book is about a group of heroes doin their job and becoming the heart of America with brotherhood and honor. God bless our service men and women.

A must read for those interested in the phenomenon of war.. This is one of the most dynamic, kinetic, and harrowing works of non-ficion I’ve ever read. Parnell and Bruning present a very readable, enjoyable, and awful taste of war. The book follows Outlaw Platoon of the 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan as they endure (and persevere, barely) battle after battle against the Haqaani Network, the Taliban, Al-qaeda inbeds, and Pakistani Military advisors. A window in to the experiences of those who are willing to give all for their brothers and their country, and return to the US effected (for good and bad) for life. May these men be treated with honor, dignity, and respect for the rest of their days.

Great Americans!. A great story of true American Heroes. A must read for all.

Outlaw platoon. Where do we get such men? Excellent!

Outlaw Platoon. Epic

Honest no BS. Sean’s telling of his and his men’s story is a must read.

Great read. This book is very good and gritty. I loved that the story is all about the troops on the point of the spear. No tales of boot camp and training, just jump onto the front lines and tell about the struggles and fight. Well done!

Amazing. As someone who currently serves in Bravo 2-87, this book reminds me of the dedication of those before and aspire many to achieve a sliver of what these great men did.

This is pretty much a must read for all of us - bottom line.. Thanks so much to Sean and John for writing this amazing book. I could not put it down. It's extremely well written by two very articulate men. The story is one that as Americans we all need to know about. These great and and heroic young men are out there defending us every hour of the day. I can't say enough about their efforts, and this book will enlighten us all about what they have to deal with. We so fortunate that we can only imagine what they are dealing with.

Outlaw platoon. A must read book for everyone who wants to know what happens in war in general. Thanks Sean for the real news.

Wanna Know What Fighting A War Feels Like?. Read Parnell’s book to experience combat first-hand. You’ll go thru the early adrenaline rush of satisfying aggression...but that high is sadly followed with the reality of devastating deaths of his comrades in arms or watching a gate guard’s decapitation or having a little girl die in his arms or finding out his vile new interpreter is spilling his unit’s every secret to the enemy. You’ll share his deep frustration as he struggles with holding his soldiers accountable for making the right ethical calls (think of Vietnam’s Mi Lai massacre). And you’ll sense his utter disbelief of not being allowed to fight back when his troops constantly have visual knowledge of the supposed “good guys” (Pakistani military) clearly merging with the Taliban or the Haqqani network to fight the Americans.

Good Read. Worth the price. A page-turner to the very end. An outstanding portrayal of modern warfare from the perspective of a commissioned officer.

Awesome!. Great book! I loved it!

Simply amazing. Great read

A must read. After reading this book just saying thank you could never be enough. The men put there lives on the line everyday. I am proud to call myself an American if only to stand in their shadow. If after reading this book you are not filled with the passion to go and greet every returning soldier, Marine, airman and Navel personnel then I am afraid you have become too calloused to what happens every day these men and women go "outside the wire" God bless them all, watch over them and protect then

Outlaw platoon. An extremely well written authoritative account of the ground War in Afghanistan. I can say that this concise account gripped me as reader and made me recall my deployments and the many exhaustive operations I conducted over my short military career in the Australian Army. That said this is the first time I can truly say that the tempo of modern military ground operations is conveyed in such a manner as to be truly accepted as reflective of the dangers faced by troops engaged in counter insurgency operations. Lastly, many who read this book must put perspective that what Sean has achieved is not a common occurrence and therefore Outlaw Platoon is a must read for junior Officers and NCO's alike should they ever wish to wield a formidable and effective fighting unit. Message to the Author; as you were aware then your 'warrior brothers' will always need you and you them. As i found the years rolling by all your experiences take years to process sometimes it's a call you didn't expect and I found out the hard way when i/we didn't recognize the signs that our strong personalities weren't doing well after deployment. Look out for each other always as there are hards times ahead made easier by the love and support of all your families.

Outlaw platoon. I had high hopes for this book but after just one chapter found I could not stomach the simplistic writing style. The writing style is so crude I felt like I was reading a piece of schoolboy prose. I don't doubt the author's intent or sincerety, but it's such a basic writing style I just couldn't bring myself to finish it. A decent ghost writer would have made this much more palatable. I am writing this several months later. I finally came back to this book and felt I had probably been a bit harsh in my previous coments and should rectify that. Whilst the writing style still annoys me somewhat (the description of especially the first big engagement sounded more like a hockey match being described rather than life or death combat) I have to say that the book does become very engaging and more competent. the author's dedication to his men comes through and the encounters with the enemy are clearly presented. I guess my (now reduced) missgiving are that it feels like the author is trying to hard to be "author-like" and comes off at times sounding a bit more flowery than sincere. However there is no doubt he has a valuable story to tell and his insider view gives a refreshing insight into what you do NOT read in the papers, such as Pakistan's assistance to the Taliban, what is expected of the men on the ground and the rediculous supply situation. So......whlst it has annopyed me a bit in a literary sense if the reader sticks with it he will be rewarded with a clearer knowledge of what the ordinary soldier and his commander have endured, suffered and triumphed over.

Outlaw platoon. Absolutely an outstanding read which describes the effects of war on all involved. The pain and suffering that these warriors went through to ensure their efforts to change the barbaric ways of the despots they waged war against to protect us and the local villagers was described in a way that those of us who have never faced battle could only shudder when read. Thank you for sharing your military life's story and thank you and all of your men from saving the rest of us from having to experience in real life what you have. God bless you all.

Great Read!. Amazing story of what it is really like over there!

Outlaw Platoon. I've read thousands of books and this is most profound literary experience ever. I wept through the last 20 pages. I'm sick over the residents from the Village of the Damned. That 6 year old boy. This redefines a war story. I'm haunted by simply reading what you and your men went through.

Outlaw Platoon. A good story. A little depressing.

Couldn't put it down.. Couldn't put this book down. This book has told a story which I will be hard pressed to ever forget. I would give this book more stars than spaces offered! Thanks for sharing your story!

An Excellent Read. Very good read and excellent account of the actual life during war.

Outlaw Platoon...Great Read. This is a great book, should be made a mandatory read for all new and existing leaders.

READ IT!. I was so emotionally moved by this book and getting a first hand view of what we never hear on the news. I have so much respect and admiration for all our service men and women and a true admiration for people like Sean Parnell

Amazing and inspiring. Truly an inspiring and fantastic story shared with the rest of us by a loving and devoted leader. Told in engaging and vivid prose easily on par with any account of active duty beyond the wire.

Like being there. An incredible read, this book was hard to put down, even to go to work. I really felt a part of the action with all of its highs and lows. Although I am not a big fan of war, the compassion felt for the Afghan people, not always returned, was inspirational and well-described. The Author was obviously qualified to tell his tale accurately, and tackled his own heroism with humility tempered with the necessary duty to document his own value to the operations. This Platoon served all of us well, and my wish for the surviving members is a long peaceful recovery from the horrors. I envy their brotherhood and earned trust in each other. I feel very real sadness now that the last page has been turned.

Great Read. A great story told in a way that captivates the reader. If you enjoyed the books American Sniper and/or Lone Survivor then you will love this book!

Outlaw Platoon - Could not put it down. A "can't put it down" first hand account of life under fire while fighting internal military politics, spies, and the elements. A fantastic story of leadership and sacrifice that gives new context to the stories of those who defend our freedom.
