The Big Miss by Hank Haney Book Summary

The Big Miss is Hank Haney’s candid and surprisingly insightful account of his tumultuous six-year journey with Tiger Woods, during which the supremely gifted golfer collected six major championships and rewrote golf history. Hank was one of the very few people allowed behind the curtain. He was with Tiger 110 days a year, spoke to him over 200 days a year, and stayed at his home up to 30 days a year, observing him in nearly every circumstance: at tournaments, on the practice range, over meals, with his wife, Elin, and relaxing with friends.

The relationship between the two men began in March 2004 when Hank received a call from Tiger in which the golf champion asked him to be his coach. It was a call that would change both men’s lives.

Tiger—only 28 at the time—was by then already an icon, judged by the sporting press as not only one of the best golfers ever, but possibly the best athlete ever. Already he was among the world’s highest paid celebrities. There was an air of mystery surrounding him, an aura of invincibility. Unique among athletes, Tiger seemed to be able to shrug off any level of pressure and find a way to win.

But Tiger was always looking to improve, and he wanted Hank’s help.

What Hank soon came to appreciate was that Tiger was one of the most complicated individuals he’d ever met, let alone coached. Although Hank had worked with hundreds of elite golfers and was not easily impressed, there were days watching Tiger on the range when Hank couldn’t believe what he was witnessing. On those days, it was impossible to imagine another human playing golf so perfectly.

And yet Tiger is human—and Hank’s expert eye was adept at spotting where Tiger’s perfection ended and an opportunity for improvement existed. Always haunting Tiger was his fear of “the big miss”—the wildly inaccurate golf shot that can ruin an otherwise solid round—and it was because that type of blunder was sometimes part of Tiger’s game that Hank carefully redesigned his swing mechanics.

Hank’s most formidable coaching challenge, though, would be solving the riddle of Tiger’s personality. Wary of the emotional distractions that might diminish his game and put him further from his goals, Tiger had developed a variety of tactics to keep people from getting too close, and not even Hank—or Tiger’s family and friends, for that matter—was spared “the treatment.”

Toward the end of Tiger and Hank’s time together, the champion’s laser-like focus began to blur and he became less willing to put in punishing hours practicing—a disappointment to Hank, who saw in Tiger’s behavior signs that his pupil had developed a conflicted relationship with the game. Hints that Tiger hungered to reinvent himself were present in his bizarre infatuation with elite military training, and—in a development Hank didn’t see coming—in the scandal that would make headlines in late 2009. It all added up to a big miss that Hank, try as he might, couldn’t save Tiger from.

There’s never been a book about Tiger Woods that is as intimate and revealing—or one so wise about what it takes to coach a superstar athlete.

Good read. If you are a Tiger fan and want to learn more about his game and career, read this book! Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Outstanding. If you are a golf fan, or a tiger fan (or like myself-both), this is the book you absolutely need to read. Hank haney did a great job writing a detailed account of his experiences with tiger. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and finished it in less than 24 hours. I thought he was fair to tiger as well-this was not a "bash tiger" book no matter what you've heard or read about it

The Big Miss...Missed. Terrible read. I found this book very boring. It seemed to me that Hank was making subtle excuses for no longer working with Tiger and suggesting that Tiger was better with him then he will be without. Sorry I wasted my $$$ on it and time reading it.

My Review. I found Hanks book to be very insightful and detailed about his time with Tiger Woods. Mr. Haney's book to be a very honest assessment of both his relationship and work with Tiger. This book also helped me take a look at my own golf game differently and strive for further improvement based on the details of Hank's comments in the book. I will keep this book as a treasured golf book in my personal library for future reference. Thanks for a great book. Ken Merbler

Enjoyed this a lot. This book gave me a fly-on-the-wall perspective of the greatest golfer and one of the greatest athletes of all time. There are a lot of references to past professional events and language that is geared towards golfers. If you have a limited amount of golf knowledge, you may get lost with some of the terminology (though there is a glossary of terms included). Hank did a great job of telling the story how it unfolded with tact.

The Big Miss. This is an excellent book. If you like golf and are interested in the complicated psyche of a true golf genius like Tiger Woods you will really enjoy what Hank has to say in The Big Miss. On top of everything else it is well written and an easy read. I highly recommend this book.

Amazing book. What a great read! I really enjoyed it from the first page to the last. I recommend you read it if you are on the fence. Ty H. Haney

The big miss. The book was good, a bit of hesitancy on hanks part to upset tiger, or at lease it seems to me. The e book part was the most frustrating three times halfway through the chapter it would hang up and just display the same page over and over again. I would have to go to the next chapter and start from there. Very frustrating and missed some of the book. Boo.

tiger is a interesting fellow.. This book was interesting. Made me see Tiger in a new light.

Not too impressed. A one sided book about Tiger. Hank Haney is a good golf instructor, but not such a good story teller in this instance. In the end, I was reading so as to finish, not for the enjoyment. There were technical glitches, too.

Great read. Right or wrong, hank Haney writes an honest and captivating book about his time with Tiger. If you followed tiger since his amateur days like I have, you won't be able to put this down. I've questioned whether tiger will ever make it back to his previous level and break jacks record, and now i have my answer...

Really surprised me. Very good read. Haney is honest and insightful. Honest about himself as well. Very informative about pro golf and golfers. Mainly, a great case-study in the genius of Tiger Woods. If you love the game, you must read this book.

Eye opening. Gave me a view of Tiger that I probably knew was true but didn't want to believe. Everybody succumbs to the pressure...

Big miss. Title says it all

Great book!. Well written and extremely descriptive. Great insight into the greatest golfer of all time's life. The author (hank Haney) had to put up with quite the personality for a number of years to get the information and experiences for writing this book. 10/10 will read again.

Awesome. Great book with insights into Tigers thinking from a man whose the golf swing. Great book for Golf nerd like me. Thank you Hank for writing it. Very educational.

Great book!. Very much enjoyed hank's writing and telling of the story. Thanks, hank!

The Big Miss. hanks book was enlightening. We have cheered for Tiger thru his ups and downs. He is obviously human as we all make mistakes. He is judged harshly

The Book Miss. Haney was in an extraordinary position working with one of the greatest Golfers ever. His books goes a long way to show that Tiger is not an exemplary person or friend and seems to be selfish and awkward socially. Haney made this point early in the book, but continued to hammer away at it until the end. I was waiting for the Chapter where Haney stood up to Tiger and told him face to face and direct what he thought about Tiger's swing issues and practice habits (or lack of practice, such as on his short game). Not in emails. Why would you work with Tiger for years and not require him to engage in an open and honest conversation with you about what you are both thinking and feeling about your coaching and his learning. Haney feels that it was within his rights to write a book about Tiger because it was His Experiences with Tiger. I believe the book was a total violation of Tiger's personal life and a violation of a Coach-Athlete relationship. Haney spoke about Tiger never really letting him in or never really opening up to him. If Tiger had opened up to Haney, what, Haney would have had a few more chapters in his book and could have further violated Tiger's privacy to the world. I was a big Tiger fan and a Hank Haney fan. I am still a fan of both. But I think less of each of them. Go Tiger! Rich C.

This book is no miss.. There was a lot of negative feedback from many members of the press when this book came out. They hadn't read the book, but they were sure it was nothing more than a hatchet job by a jilted golf coach. That couldn't be further from the truth. Hank has done a great job telling the story of HIS relationship with Tiger Woods. Hank's thoughtful and respectful recap of his time with Tiger shines a whole new light on the sad soul that is Tiger Woods.

Boring and tired. Just seems like Hank has a bone to pick. Done in poor taste.

It's about Revenge. No doubt The Big Miss is an addicting read, it's quite fascinating to get inside the ropes and peer into the life of probably the greatest player who has ever played the game. My biggest gripe is not whether it is a good book, but rather why Hank even decided to write it in the first place. I believe it's Hank's way of getting back at Tiger. Revenge, similar to what happens after a dysfunctional relationship has expired. Hank had felt Tiger betrayed him and Hank abandoned Tiger when he needed him the most. This book largely sheds Tiger in a bad light, giving away a lot of private and personal details. I have no doubt many of the things Hank talk about is true, but this book is self-serving wether it be for money or other personal reasons. They talk about reconciling their friendship, but Hank, a true friend would not have done this.

Not a smear campaign as I had thought it would be..... Gives great insight into the mind and personal interactions that made Tiger the greatest golfer in the world then ultimately led to his personal demise. Well worth the quick read!!

Book review. Thank you Mr. Haney for this great book. I feel it is an honest capsule of the complex life and times of Tiger Woods. Continued success. Ron Patton

BiG Miss. I enjoyed reading this book. It gave the full story of the relationship btw Hank Haney and Tiger Woods. It reveals the reasons behind many of the professional issues affecting Tiger through the years he was with Hank. It also clarifies just how little Hank knew about Tigers fettish and shows insight on how that time affected Tiger both professionally and personally.

Choppy. The book gives interesting insights, but bounces around strangely. It does seem like Hank Haney wrote it to make sure everyone knows how important he is.

Good read. Just a good read and really tells the personal side of golf and how it's not so easy being Tiger

A big miss. It's well said who Tiger is... This book would be suitable for those parents who are over pushing their kids to purse on their dreams, not the kids'

Really good book. Really good book but I am surprised that Haney would deem it necessary to air out all of Tiger's dirty laundry. Haney wrote the book as if he were a victim, but instead he made himself out to be an disloyal member of Tiger's team. The insight about Tiger's golf swing is incredible. Read this book!

Axe to grind. I am no apologist for Tiger, but this book was a cheap shot and unprofessional. I am sorry to say I supported it by purchasing.

Phenomenal Book. I'm left with my heart pounding, wanting more.. Why did this book have to end??? I read the last page with Arnold Palmers opinion over and over somehow hoping the book could continue. One could only imagine what served as his ultimate intrinsic motivator and the thoughts pondered upon him as he rests his head on the pillow at night. Witnessing greatness had to have been dream like and Tiger's father Earl was correct in his prediction of his son being more influential than Ghandi because he is. I want to know what makes Tiger tick and like you said Hank, that mystery is what makes him great. We will never see another Eldrick Tont Woods, and this book was fabulous from start to finish. So amazed with the precision of dates in combination with detailed conversations that occurred everyday.. It means you viewed what was occurring as being so special that you kept a journal each day of your every encounter with Tiger Woods. I could hope to one day read a book as great as this one. My fascination with Tiger Woods will never subside.

Much Better Than I Expected. If you appreciate the dedication involved to play competitive sports & you love golf this book is for you. This book was initially advertised as being a dis on Tiger from Haney but it is hardly that. If anything, Haney spends time defending his coaching over Harmon’s.

The Big Miss. Interesting, but highly predictable essay on Haney's six years with Woods. At the halfway point through the book I couldn't decide whether Tiger or Hank was the biggest ego maniac. By the end, the winner was clearly Tiger Woods. He is without a doubt a magnificent golfer. He is also one of the biggest head cases I have ever encountered. Unlike Hank, who is probably just being charitable, I routinely root against this sleaze bag and hope against hope that Jack's 18 holds up.

Missing pages!. I enjoyed the book, but there are several missing pages. It gives a new meaning to the title. Do not buy!

The big miss. I thought it was a well-written book but Haney is a snake...if your looking for juicy behind the scenes type stuff with tiger you'll instead get a self loathing hypocrite that goes by the name of hank Haney.. He ends up being right, nobody will ever hire him as a coach again.

Good Job. Haney was very respectful and complimentary with his comments. Honest appraisal, seems Tiger is a little like Ben Hogan, a man no one gets too close or really knows the inner Tiger. A great read for serious students of the game.

The big mystery. It's all about Hank. If he really had any integrity he would have consulted Tiger beforehand. He has no business writing what he did. The book says more about Hank and his insecurities than anything else. Why else would someone write a book to bring so much attention to himself Too bad!

Great Read!. A "must read" for "golf nuts" like me. I found Haney's observations well reasoned and objective. And, Haney gave much credit to Tiger's previous "coach", Butch Harmon. IMO, Tiger today would be much better with Haney than Sean Foley who is basically "stack and tilt" without the name.

The Big Miss. Talk about a Big Miss! If you want to read a story about why Hank Haney is the greatest golf instructor alive as told by Hank Haney, this is the book for you.

The Big Miss. Good book. It's cool how Hank tries to get in the mind of Tiger and lay it on paper. Hank also seems defensive when compared to Butch in some ways, but overall interesting how Tiger lived pre-scandal.

Decent at best. The book was more of a comparison between Butch Harmon and Hank Haney and how many majors they guided Tiger to victory. I wonder if they truly believe either had anything to do with him winning.

Great book for a Stats guy. A must read!

Not a Terrible Read, Not a Great Read. I enjoyed some of the stories about Tiger but there’s nothing earth shattering in this book that most of the general public doesn’t already know about Tiger. I took this book as Haney trying to “get back” at Tiger in some way because Tiger didn’t give him enough credit. I also took it as Haney being upset because Tiger said some things that Haney perceived as hurtful to his legacy as a swing coach. The entire last chapter is dedicated to Haney comparing Tigers record while he was coaching him to the time Harmon was coaching him. Spoiler alert… he did 0.003% better while Haney was coaching him (depending on how you view the stats).

Disappointed. I was very disappointed in this book. It seemed to be more of Hank Haney trying to justify what a great coach he was than any inside look at Tiger Woods. The one interesting thought I have is that Hank Haney might have been the biggest detriment to the career of Tiger Woods. Tiger always went for it and would either do miraculous things or not. By training him to play safe and avoid "the big miss" he may have ruined his ability to do what he had always done. My take away from this book is that Hank Haney is very insecure in himself and his time with Tiger. Take that from this review and don't waste your time or money on the book.

Really Enjoyed it. As an avid golfer who follows the PGA, I really enjoyed the book. In the end it really was mostly a golf book as Hank said it was. Maybe a little self serving toward the end. But I enjoyed reading about how Hank tried to figure out an extremely complex, driven, great golfer. Not a Tiger fan, but completely respect what he has accomplished and do believe now more than ever that Tiger is and will be known as the greatest golfer ever. Not so much as a friend, husband, or employer. But no doubt the best ever. Very good read.

Not Your Place to speak, Hank.. Hank Haney was not right to write a book about personal and private moments coaching Tiger Woods. I have no respect for him in writing this book and feel sorry for Tiger having his personal life looked at under a microscope in the book and in other forms of media. I wish there was a way for this book to be taken off the market because Hank Haney should be thanking Tiger for all of the years of coaching him, not selling his private moments with Tiger and looking to make more money. Hank Haney owes all of his fame to Tiger Woods for making his teaching popular. Hank Haney was nothing before Tiger came to him for coaching.

Golf historian. Very interesting. Very self serving. Did Hank's wife die or did he dump her when she got sick? He talked about not being able to be with Tiger because his wife was sick in one chapter and then a divorce and later with his new wife. He should have explained. Not clarifying that made him look like he was running around as well.

Tattletale. Some really interesting stuff here...but this book is like your housekeeper writing a tell-all about your sex life. I do not understand how Haney rationalizes this book to himself. Despite enjoying some of the inside stories and wisdom, I think Haney is a reprehensible opportunist here, willing to sell out his former client for $$$$$$

Unsatisfied. My version had a few sections where the same page was repeated 10 times and the chapter ended out of no where even though it wasn't completed. Please fix the book for future readers.

Interesting. Very interesting and fair read for anyone who has followed Tiger throughout his career and is miffed at his fall from grace. A must read for anyone who is a fan or student of the great game of golf.

Messed Up!. This book would probably be good but it's soooo messed up in iBooks that I can't tell where I left off ... It repeats pages .... Looses bookmarks ... Starts a new chapter without completing the previous!! I even upgraded to the new version and it's still screwed up! It's driving me nuts!!!! I should have bought the frickin' paperback instead. Fix this apple!!!

The Big Miss. I learned two things; how tough it is to coach Tiger and the Ian Poulter snipe about "mooching" a ride on his plane. The rest of the book is fairly boring talk about his swing. Len Biddell, Toronto

Ok but annoying due to publishing errors. Annoying! Multiple pages repeated. Chapter doesn't end after 8 page turns to get to the next sentence. Too much on the intricacies of swing mechanics zzzz. And I care about that! Obviously Hank Haney took detailed notes across all those years with the intent of writing this book. Some interesting points - ie: navy seals training, some insight into relationship with Elin and Steve Williams. Otherwise, difficult to stay on track with all of the publishing errors.

Worth Reading.. I never thought I’d read this book when it first came out but, as a Tiger Woods fan, I wanted to know more about how he ticked. This book didn’t disappoint. A truly in-depth look into the world of a golf genius and champion from an ‘inside the ropes’ perspective. I found Mr. Haney defending himself a little too much throughout the book, but that never really distracted from the book overall. I’m glad Hank Haney shared his experince with us….worth the read!

No Big Miss Here. A very interesting read, appreciate Mr. Haney's "true" comparative numbers. I will however continue to root for Tiger!!!!

waste of money!!. terrible book don't waste your time or your money. you will be very dissapointed, I was

Good read.. Excellent book. For those expecting this to be a bunch of Tiger bashing, it's not at all. It's very interesting getting a behind the scenes look at one the greatest of all time.
