Into the Fire by Dakota Meyer & Bing West Book Summary

“The story of what Dakota did . . . will be told for generations.”—President Barack Obama, from remarks given at Meyer’s Medal of Honor ceremony

In the fall of 2009, Taliban insurgents ambushed a patrol of Afghan soldiers and Marine advisors in a mountain village called Ganjigal. Firing from entrenched positions, the enemy was positioned to wipe out one hundred men who were pinned down and were repeatedly refused artillery support. Ordered to remain behind with the vehicles, twenty-one year-old Marine corporal Dakota Meyer disobeyed orders and attacked to rescue his comrades.

With a brave driver at the wheel, Meyer stood in the gun turret exposed to withering fire, rallying Afghan troops to follow. Over the course of the five hours, he charged into the valley time and again. Employing a variety of machine guns, rifles, grenade launchers, and even a rock, Meyer repeatedly repulsed enemy attackers, carried wounded Afghan soldiers to safety, and provided cover for dozens of others to escape—supreme acts of valor and determination. In the end, Meyer and four stalwart comrades—an Army captain, an Afghan sergeant major, and two Marines—cleared the battlefield and came to grips with a tragedy they knew could have been avoided. For his actions on that day, Meyer became the first living Marine in three decades to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

Into the Fire tells the full story of the chaotic battle of Ganjigal for the first time,  in a compelling, human way that reveals it as a microcosm of our recent wars. Meyer takes us from his upbringing on a farm in Kentucky, through his Marine and sniper training, onto the battlefield, and into the vexed aftermath of his harrowing exploits in a battle that has become the stuff of legend.

Investigations ensued, even as he was pitched back into battle alongside U.S. Army soldiers who embraced him as a fellow grunt. When it was over, he returned to the States to confront living with the loss of his closest friends. This is a tale of American values and upbringing, of stunning heroism, and of adjusting to loss and to civilian life.

We see it all through Meyer’s eyes, bullet by bullet, with raw honesty in telling of both the errors that resulted in tragedy and the resolve of American soldiers, U.S. Marines, and Afghan soldiers who’d been abandoned and faced certain death.

Meticulously researched and thrillingly told, with nonstop pace and vivid detail, Into the Fire is the unvarnished story of a modern American hero.

Praise for Into the Fire

Outstanding Book. Great book being a retired Recon Marine Nam Vet. This story bring back a lot of memory's of my time in the Corps. Thank you for your service to our country. Semper Fi ! Marine Gunny T Campbell

Spectacular. This book is like watching a great movie But based on a real story and better because you imagine the screens in your head there is no limit to how good this book is.

Amazing. I loved it

Indomitable Spirit. Dakota Meyer is a true American warrior and hero. Read this book and stand in awe of and appreciation for Meyer's intrepid drive to serve in the face of death and despair. A complex and frustrating story told in excruciating but necessary detail. Worth every effort to understand the military terms. Every American should really understand just what we ask our service men and women to suffer for our peace, prosperity, and safety.

Moving. God bless our troops!

Into the fire. This was great reading. You realize that heros come in al sizes and shapes. I liked that he was no super hero, an ordinary guy doing extraordinary things. This book helped me answer a requirement for a class that I am taking. I would recommend this book, well worth the time.

Into the fire. Not many books have moved me to tears. When Dakota met with the president I cried like a baby. Something has to be done to eliminate wars that tie our soldiers hands. If they can't call in, and receive support from the scene we have no business putting them in harms way. The lessons learned in Afghanistan, certainly weren't applied to Benghazi, as the same mistakes were made. What a shame. Dakota, you are a great humanitarian, you showed that as you bandaged and saved numerous lives. You were taught to be a killer, you are not a killer. Focus you energy, and your superhuman willpower on doing good, and being the inspiring person you are. Hang in there, you'll make a great father. Mr. West, well done, you captured the story in a engaging, and riveting way. It comes across that this was a labor of love. Thank you both for your work relaying this unbelievable story. Into the Fire. This was a very compelling story of a great young American warrior's unbelievable grit, determination, loyalty and dedication to duty under extreme combat conditions. I am a former Marine and I was moved to tears several times during the reading of this story. The depictions of his courage under fire were very inspiring. My heart is lifted and encouraged to know our country still breeds men of Dakota's Caliber. Semper Fi

Absolutely unreal. This young man's spirit, work ethic and grit is why I love this country. I've read a number of books about the Afghan/Iraq war, but none as moving as this one. The author and soldier provide a great deal of perspective into life as a soldier, the realities of war, and transitioning home. While reading, keep in mind this young man was in his early 20s when all of this happened. Just unreal. This was a quick read for me, read it over two days.

Breath taking recount. Fantastic read of his first hand experience.

I could not put it down. First I will say that I'm an average reader and I've never written a review before. I usually read for entertainment, but this book was much more than just entertainment it is an unbelievable account of what happened on the battlefield, who true heroes are, and represents what military men and women sacrifice for our country. It was an unfiltered view both while in service and at home. It reads like a good fiction book, then I remind myself, wow this all really happened. Great writing, I recommend this to anyone. A much deserved Medal of Honor.

Incredible, Inspiring. I have seen interviews of Cpl Dakota Meyer, and had been curious about the battle in which he earned the Medal of Honor. 4 days ago I downloaded this book and found it hard to put down. I have told several friends about this book and that they need to read about this incredible battle and inspiring young man. Cpl Meyer is a true American hero with a heart the size of Texas. I wish him much happiness and success in his future, he deserves respect and peace. His heroism saved many, and astounds all who know this story. As to the loss of his team, I send condolences to him and their families. They would be proud of the way he has told their story.

Simple Thanks. There are only the Brave that can truly inspire the rest of us to honor our heroes by committing ourselves to the best of American ideals. Dad who passed this year, 6th Division Double Deuce, would add a S/F.

Amazing book. An excellent read. Very emotional at times. I am no soldier and could never do what Dakota did for his team and for those with whom he served. I have nothing but respect for him and his team and those who fought and died on that tragic day. More stories like this need to be published to help the American populous understand what these soldiers, no, these heroes, go through, fighting and dying for what is right and just.

Into the fire. Cried while I felt such tremendous pride In the character of this fine, young, brave serviceman. People like him and his team keep American strong yet we rarely get an opportunity to hear first hand their amazing and heroic stories so well told. These men are born with something good and (often) great that not all of us have. I envy Dakota his ability to care so deeply and to experience such a great love of his country and his soldiers. A fast and absorbing read! I wish everyone could read it so they know what goes on and what kind of people serve the US in these countries that seeming will take another two hundred years to come close to any vague understanding of the west and what freedom and self determination are about. Bless you Dakota Meyer and you entire fire team. RIP those who did not make it.

Amazing. This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. Dakota Myers did more that he could have ever been asked to do and went above and beyond for his country and friends. Thank you so much.

Faithful. What did I learn? Faithful boots on the ground won't guarantee success when you have to depend on incompetent leadership back at headquarters!

Dakota Meyer Is An Everyday Hero. I had the pleasure of seeing Dakota Meyer at The Union League Club of Chicago and I read this book afterward. Talk about a humble hero, Dakota is it. Although given the Medal of Honor, he realizes that everyone in the battle worked together and many everyday heroes were just doing their job by serving their country. A bone chilling account of confusion and the fog of war and failed operational support. These guys were left to die and fend for themselves and repeatedly denied artillery and air support. Thank you for your service.

Magnetic. Read the entire book in one sitting. Gifted six hard copies, b/c I felt it was that good. Enthusiastically recommended for professional military education and Marine Corps required reading; for esprit de corps and the consequences of inaction. -Rod

Great read for vets (and everyone else). After struggling with my own demons from two combat tours and years of searching for understanding I finally turned to reading which was a game changer. I can say this book is easily top 3 for me. I’m not what anyone would consider a “reader” until about the last year and will say I loved every page. So for all you non readers out there, read this book, you will be happy you did. For all the vets out there, read this book, it can help you gain insight. For anyone else out there, read this book! ... in all seriousness, this is a must read book for anyone, easy to read, easy to follow the story, insight into what only few people have experienced....also recommend “You are worth it” by Kyle Carpenter

Fact check and proper use. THE METAL OF HONOR IS NEVER AWARDED TO SOMEONE, IT IS RECEIVED! No one has a raffle for who is going to be a hero on the battlefield, nor does any do those tasks I exchange for a Medal of Honor, and that is part of the reason why it is the Medal of Honor.

Amazing. Like sitting on the edge of your seat in a movie theater. Amazing retelling of how Dakota Meyer earned the MOH. Also, incredibly sad and at the same time Infuriating at how that entire operation went down, from its lackadaisical planning, to forcing Dakota out of the op, to not having air, artillery, and QRF capabilities at their disposal. Once again, the ROE are more political than about defending our own lives down range.

Thank you!. Thank you for defending our country and sharing your story.

Great book!. Good story from beginning to end. Too many of these stories go untold about the brave soldiers defending our country.

Amazing tough read.. Well written first hand account of bravery rarely seen or even heard about. His devotion to his guys is remarkable. I wish him the best life has to offer and hopes his lives the rest of his life in peace.

Unbelievable!!!!!!!. I am not a book reader but I purchased "Into the Fire" on my IPad. As with the books I have read, I was slow in starting but once I got into the actual combat part, I could not put it down. There were several heroes in this book but Sgt. Meyer stood out. You are a true Hero and you single handedly saved lives. Semper Fi Sgt. Meyer. I am proud to call you my Marine brother and STRONGLY suggest reading this book...........

A true hero. Dakota is a true hero! I will probably never have to be in a situation as hectic or crazy as his but if I am, I wish I have half as much guts and drive as this Marine, I mean hero! Thank you Dakota for your and the team's service for this country!

One of the best books ever. This was a very great books!!

Into the Fire by Dakota Meyer & Bing West. Not only one of the finest combat memoirs I've read, but also an amazing story of human dedication, brotherhood and sheer will.

Immersive and Powerful. Heard about this when I was down south in 2009, after all these years to read what happened. It leaves me with no words. Semper Fidelis

Amazing. By far one of the best books I've read in months. The attention to detail allowed me to visualize everything. I could not put down the book.

Wow. What an amazing read. Well worth the time and money.

Into the fire. I enjoyed this book immensely. It was written very well, I found it to be a very fast read. It kept my interest. And it kept me coming back for more. I would rate the Book a ten on a scale of ten. Excellent Job of writing
