Calico Joe by John Grisham Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A surprising and moving novel of fathers and sons, forgiveness and redemption, set in the world of Major League Baseball…

“Grisham knocks it out of the park.”—The Washington Post

It’s the summer of 1973, and Joe Castle is the boy wonder of baseball, the greatest rookie anyone has ever seen. The kid from Calico Rock, Arkansas, dazzles Chicago Cubs fans as he hits home run after home run, politely tipping his hat to the crowd as he shatters all rookie records. Calico Joe quickly becomes the idol of every baseball fan in America, including Paul Tracey, the young son of a hard-partying and hard-throwing New York Mets pitcher. On the day that Warren Tracey finally faces Calico Joe, Paul is in the stands, rooting for his idol but also for his dad. Then Warren throws a fastball that will change their lives forever.

Calico Joe. Very thought provoking. A fun read for the summer.

Calico Joe. An excellent story that takes the reader’s emotion to a high level as Calico Joe succeeds in baseball, and then to a low as he is injured by his “own” father with a baseball to the head. Then as time goes on, and many years pass, his father who apologized infrequently, came back and apologized to Joe before going back to Florida and dying.

I thought it was real!!!. Great book. He really has a nack for getting the reader absorbed into the tale. The final 50 pages are hard to put down. Really knows his baseball.

JG and sports fiction. Being Jg's third book of sports fiction that I have read, I must say I would just prefer he give up writing everything else. Don't get me wrong, I have read or listened to just about every book he has published, but I get much more enjoyment out of his sports novels, even though they are not as well written.

Classic Grisham. I've read nearly everything John Grisham has written, and this is among the best. I was surprised at how quickly I read it (under two days). Grisham has a rare gift for starting out with widely disparate situations and weaving them together in a way that holds my attention and throws in a few surprises along the way.

Out of the park!. Grisham really shows his versatility and his love of baseball. I loved this story!

Calico Joe. Really enjoyed the book. Easy to read. Along the same lines of the novel "Playing for Pizza". If you are a sports fan, you should like the book

Great read. Another well- researched story and thoroughly enjoyable.

Calico Joe. A story of bad behavior and redemption. East to read and feel empathy for the characters.

Good story. Read it as a story about a kid and his abusive dad and not as a story about baseball...although it is a great baseball story, too.

Couldn't put it down. Great book! Only complaint is that I couldn't put it down and finished it way too soon!

Good read. This book was a good read.

Calico Joe. I enjoyed this book but we very disappointed in the product due to many missing pages. I am now afraid to buy another book from ITunes.

Not a fan of Grisham ... I don't really like Grisham books. However, I thought this would be good. Totally waste of $13.

Calico Joe. The story was good but there were pages missing and ones that would repeat themselves 3 or 4 times. A little disappointing.

Calico Joe. Fantastic read. Book club pick, very good choice.

Very easy read. I am normally not a book reader, but I read the sample and decided to buy. So glad I did. I loved this book. Chapters were short so that was a plus. Would def recommend!!

Baseball fans!!!!. This is a must read story for any baseball fan.

Calico Joe. This is a great story about baseball, family, loss and redemption. Baseball is the frame of an artistically written novel of a parent and son who are both victims of a vicious decision made by the father thirty years ago. It's the story of the healing power of acknowledging one's sins and forgiving the wrongs done in the past. The story leaves the reader touched by the sense of having been witness to a morality play.

Best book ever!!!!!!!. This book was the first book I've ever read from John Grisham. Ever since then I only like to read book from this author. I read the series Theodore Boone and I am waiting for the fourth one to come out. Right now I reading Bleachers and so far it has been good. John Grisham is the best author in my opinion and I hope to read more books from this author.

A Grand Slam!. One of the best sports stories I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Mr Grisham unravels the sport and exposes the heart and souls of the players, families, and it's fans. It's a masterful work of art that continues to surprise you even when you think you figured it out. To experience every emotion from laughing, to sadness, to anger and yes, even tears, is a glaring reminder of the wonderful writing that we get to experience in our lifetime with John Grisham. 3 on, 2 out, bottom of the 9th.... KE-RACK....it looks it could be, it might be, it is, it's outta here! A HOME RUN!!

Calico Joe. I am a Phillies fan, and I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. Recently, our hero pitcher Cole Hamels deliberately hit a rookie and I was appalled. After reading Callico Joe, i understand more about the "code" but still don't like it. This story is heartwarming. It is a fast read, mainly because you do not want to put it down!

Calico Joe. This is an incredibly marvelous book. I loved it. It's well written and it felt like it was just happening then and their. Great book.

Calico Joe---in search of closure. Wow! This is not Grisham at his greatest fast action packed self. It's Grisham at his deadliest. He is so good at details that you keep hoping that this book isn't taking you where you are sure he is going! Unfortunately, what should have been a chapter becomes an entire book? Yes folks this is even deadlier that the game of baseball and golf, and did I mention slower

Fast quick great easy read. Awesome book... Fast easy reading luv it

Just too hard to believe. I liked the story of forgiveness, but find it a little hard to believe that the two men meet and joke. Also hard to believe is the meteoric rise of Joe as a rookie. It was just painted with relatively broad strokes. More of a parable than a believable story.

Really good!!. Grisham does a great job in creating this fictitious story around actual events providing the reader with a sense of "true story" telling. It wasn't as heart felt as "bleachers", but really good none the less. Definitely a must read for anybody, regardless if you're a baseball fan or not

Great Audio Book. Traveling to and from work every day makes for a long undesirable time. In addition to having kids at home that want attention constantly, books are not much of an option. Picking this audio book proved great for hearing the “action” of the book and a chance to see Grisham at work. I would highly recommend this as a quick read. I can’t wait for my oldest baseball child to jump into this so we can talk about the greats spotlighted in the novel and how one individual can impact a sport.

Calico Joe. A very enjoyable book. Easy to read. Yet hard to put down. It makes you feel that it is a true story. But, that's John Grisham for you....

Hate to read and loved it.. It hate as much as anybody to read, but I LOVED this book. I'm not even a huge baseball fan. It's great for all ages.

Calico Joe. Calico Joe is a fine novel. I must say I was also a big fan of John Grisham's Playing For Pizza. Grisham makes wonderful use of his sports knowledge and delivers a great story in Calico Joe. It isn't a sports book, and it isn't a lovey-dovey feel good novel. It's really a wonderful story of Joe, Warren, and Paul, and how baseball is more than just a sport. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of a good story, and even if you aren't a sports fan, I think you'll enjoy this well written piece. Enjoy!

A baseball enjoyment. I liked this book very much. You gotta love baseball for it to get through but, if you do, it’s a wonderful tale.

Fast read!. Not being a true fan of baseball, I truly enjoyed this book! The story was captivating and, with the mix of fictional and real characters, felt more like a non-fiction book! It was a great summer read and would be enjoyed by all ages!

Great read!!. Great story that will probably be a character piece in the theaters. Might be a little cliche at times and it's extremely short, but overall I was pleased with the content.

Calico Joe. Grisham is an easy to read author who in his early days had a story to tell but no longer. He just phones it in.

Powerful Story. Best book I have read in a while. As a pastor John Grisham is my favorite theologian. Regret, loss, forgiveness, death, life - this is an absolutely beautiful story.

great book. I love John Grishams books especially when he goes in to a sports theme. can't wait for his next sports based book. I have been reading his books since his very first book

Calico Joe. Another great story from one of America's great stoytellers. Grisham's stories about lawyers and legal stuff have all been fantastic, but it's a nice change to see a novel built around baseball, a father and a son. I couldn't put it down until the end!

Calico Joe. Once again, John Grisham has hit it out of the park! A great baseball story you won't put down.

Calico Joe. Quick read, very enjoyable. Love all of John Grisham's novels

Awesome.. Best book for all die hard baseball fans Great story and thanks a lot for another great book John R GA

Calico Joe. A very tedious, bitter story filled with statistics, names and dates. Subpar for Grishom.

Who is Calico Joe?. Almost all American boys and men daydream about being a Major League ball player. I suspect that James Patterson's Calico Joe is his personal "day dream" ballplayer. I know my dream had me going up to the KansasCity Athletics and hitting over .450 for my rookie season. My dream never had an ending. Patterson's is about a comet that was like no other and then came crashing tragically down. Great story, a book I just couldn't put down.

Calico Joe. Story was a fun read, however, it's more a short story than a novel. That said, I think the cost of the book should have been more reflective of the content rather than based on Mr. Grisham's reputation.

Calico Joe. Being a huge baseball fan and being a teenager in '73, this book was a great joy to read. I was taken back in time and reminded of the power of forgiveness in the ending. Excellent story!

Very good!. I haven't had a book grab my attention and imagination this fast in years. For a man this book may be a perfect distraction for remembering ones youth. Impossible to know if a woman would relate or enjoy this book. Seems a simpler time wasn't as simple as we may have romanticized it being. The depiction of childhood dreams and an angry fathers frustrations is right on.

Wonderful story. All baseball fans should read it.. John Grisham is a wonderful story teller. Taking his obvious love for baseball and mixing in the father son story is great. I was afraid it would be too cheesy but its not. It's truthful and pure. If you liked Bleachers and Playing for Pizza then get this book!

Calico Joe. This was the first John Grisham sports book that I read. I actually enjoyed the read and loved the characters. There were no big surprises as he does in his legal thrillers.

Last page of chapters missing. The last page of most chapters is not there. It is only a copy of the second to last page. Has this happened to anyone else? How do you fix it? I want my money back. Overall good book so far though and would be 5 stars if all the pages were there

Wonderful Baseball Tale. This is an absolutely wonderfully marriage of a story about Major League Baseball and of personal redemption/reconciliation. I grew up following the Senators in the late '60s and now the Nationals who are have the kind of season depicted in the story about the '73 Cubs. In fact I was reminded of the similarities between Joe Castle and Bryce Harper. I've long been a fan of Grisham's storytelling and find it quite refreshing to read one of his works that has almost no reference to lawyers. I can only hope that this well written story will find it's way to the big screen before too long.

Kept My Attention.... Bought it in the morning, finished it this afternoon. Enjoyed the read immensely. The story was somewhat predictable though and I would have enjoyed a couple more twists.

Calico Joe. Another home run by Grisham. Story takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of emotion and leaves us wanting to read the final story of these three men .... Warren, Joe and Paul.

Calico Joe. This book was not written by John Grisham. It had to be written by someone who used his name, because it has none of the depth and riveting interest Grisham is known for. In fact, this was the most boring and simple plot one could imagine. No twists, no turns. Just predictable, dull prose. Very disappointing!

Calico Joe. I started this book after lunch and couldn't put it down. It is a fascinating story of father-son relationships and redemption. I grew up with the Expos in Montreal and followed baseball closely but this book will be of interest even if you have never been a fan?

Calico Joe. Although clever in his handling of this fictional conflict, I found the story, while sad, to be a little bit too easy to predict. Grisham uses fictional and real people to recreate a fictitious event, but it was far from a jaw-dropping effort. A good look into what many professional baseball players, and athletes in general may go through. I would think that baseball fans, by and large would appreciate this novel.
