The Kingmaker's Daughter by Philippa Gregory Book Summary

In this New York Times bestseller that inspired the critically acclaimed Starz miniseries The White Queen, Philippa Gregory tells the tale of Anne Neville, a beautiful young woman who must navigate the treachery of the English court as her father, known as the Kingmaker, uses her and her sister as pawns in his political game.

The Kingmaker’s Daughter—Philippa Gregory’s first sister story since The Other Boleyn Girl—is the gripping tale of the daughters of the man known as the Kingmaker, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick: the most powerful magnate in fifteenth-century England. Without a son and heir, he uses his daughters, Anne and Isabel, as pawns in his political games, and they grow up to be influential players in their own right.

At the court of Edward IV and his beautiful queen, Elizabeth Woodville, Anne grows from a delightful child to become ever more fearful and desperate when her father makes war on his former friends. Married at age fourteen, she is soon left widowed and fatherless, her mother in sanctuary and her sister married to the enemy. Anne manages her own escape by marrying Richard, Duke of Gloucester, but her choice will set her on a collision course with the overwhelming power of the royal family.

Always amazing!. Philippa Gregory never disappoints, and this is another example of just that. I find myself wanting to read it again and I just finished it! Such a treat. Thank you Mrs. Gregory!

Dejavu. As I read through this latest book by Ms. Gregory, I was so very disappointed to repeatedly get the feeling of dejavu. I can completely understand the necessity for an author to remind their readers of some important details from previous books. Especially books of the historical type, but almost the entire book could have been included in her prior works. There was very little new material, facts, and especially the all important main characters perspective. I think I will pass on her next book when it arrives as I feel let down for having spent the money on her latest novel.

Fabulous Read. The Kingmaker's Daughter is a fabulous read; I couldn't put it down. I fell in love with Gregory after The Other Boleyn Girl, and I've read many of her novels. This is the first one that I've enjoyed as much as The Other Boleyn Girl.

The Kingmaker's Daughter. Amazing read, I could not put it down and I finished it in two days. I a most read!

Buy it!!!!!!. I love the book so much I didn't want it to end!!! Thank goodness it's a series.

A good read. I love Gregory and this was a typical book by her. I really enjoyed it and could not put it down. I was so happy to read about this side of the story as the white queen was from Elizabeth Woodville's point of view.

The Kingmaker's Daughter. Captivating.

Boring. Same storyline for the entire book so little excitement or conclusion. Kept waiting for the character to step up to the title of the book but she just never got it together.

The Kingmaker's Daughter. Normally I love Philippa Gregory's books. In addition to rich history woven into gripping fiction she usually builds a reasonable and believable psychological profile of her characters. Their thoughts, needs, expectations are often very consistent with human psychological patterns and drives while also molded by the times in which the character lived. This book is not like the others. The profiles are inconsistent and unreasonable and unbelievable. For the first time I found myself skipping pages and rolling my eyes during parts of a character's internal dialogue. The narrative thoughts and beliefs just do not have psychological realism. This book has multiple characters that quite frankly live amongst the normal people in their time while being completely delusional yet nobody notices? This ruined the book for me.

Awesome. Anyone who enjoys philippa Gregory and the English court should not miss this tale

Another great Phillippa read!. This book is told from a young girls voice, perhaps that is what some readers find annoying? She is redundant, excitable, and silly at times....but she is a young girl. The author stays true to her voice. I could not put this book down. It's the second in the Cousins War series, and it's fantastic. Dont let the bad reviews scare you. It was a great read. Can't wait for her next one. I also just finished the Second Empress by Michelle Moran which was also great if you like historical fiction.

I love this book!!!!!!. Anne is my favorite character in this series. Her development from a girl to a strong woman is intriguing, she has been through a lot of terrible situations in life, And comes out on top. Her and Richards love for each makes me giddy. Spoiler: I don't like the ending because I don't believe Richard had an affair with Elizabeth of York.

Not a great read. Was very repetitive. Read about 1000 pages (on iPad) then skipped to the last 2 pages.

Another great book by Philippa Gregory. This is the fourth book in The Cousin's War series by Philippa Gregory, and it is a great read. The story is about Anne Neville and her sister, Isabel, the daughter's of the Earl of Warwick, also known as "the kingmaker". The story begins with Elizabeth Woodville, Edward IV's wife, coming to court after marrying the king in secret. At first everyone is in awe of the queen but soon Warwick changes sides and attempts to put George, Edward's brother, onto the throne by marrying his daughter Isabel to him and waging war against the king. Warwick, however, fails and is defeated and soon directs his attention on a new ally, Margaret of Anjou. A fierce and very powerful woman, she is the wife of Henry VI, the heir of Lancaster who Edward dethroned. This attempt fails and Warwick again is defeated and his daughter, Anne, is brought to live with her sister. Anne soon marries Edward's brother, Richard, for love and the story follows her rise to Queen of England. Overall this story was good. I definitely recommend it to anyone that love Philippa Gregory's novels as well as those that are interested in Richard III and Anne Neville.
