Frey by Melissa Wright Book Summary

Nothing is as it seems.

Frey's life is a lie. She doesn't remember being bound from magic. She didn't intend to discover this dangerous secret, to get entangled in Council business. But she did.

And now she's on the run.

With the aid of a stranger, she discovers a world beyond the elves who bound her. But it's a world of shadows and dark magic, a world she's been warned not to trust. The farther she strays, the more she finds a forgotten past. As she fights to reclaim her true identity, Council trackers hunt her down.

If they find her, she will burn.

The stranger offers her a way out, but it's a path of no return. How do you know who to believe when you don't even know who you are?

Pretty Good for All Ages. I'm not sure what age group the target is, but I'm 30-something and found this an easy and enjoyable read. Didn't completely care for the ending, the end developed a little too quickly. But I look forward to the next book

Okay. Good story but it is a little hard to follow sometimes. Definitely couldn’t put it down at some parts!

Only half told. I had high hopes for becoming immersed in yet another epic full of magic and mystery and action and adventure, but I am struggling to convince myself the story will come if I just keep on reading. Well, I am half way through, and have yet to find substance. There have been incidences and encounters and questions, but absolutely no directive or answers. The characters are only minimally developed. Frey is still only a partially sketched outline. And the story feels more abstract than epic. I'm surprised the editor allowed this to publish without more substance. Readers need substance.

Freya. Engaging, hard to put it down!

Frey. I truly enjoyed this novel, it is very well written, with plenty of action and a very good storyline. Give it a try you will not be sorry.

Fortnite. Good

Somewhat interesting. The main character seems clueless. Dialogue is rudimentary and plot predictable.

Solid. Solid book. For fantasy it did a great job of steering away from most cliches’, I was actually wondering “what will happen next”, which is very rare in a fantasy novel. So yeah a solid fun light read suitable for a broad age range. Well done author.

Captivating. Very enjoyable story told at a pace that holds your attention.

Part of a book.... This short novel should have included the next five or six in the series and called it a decent sized book. Instead, it followed the main character through a lot of places and headaches as she was “blocked” from knowing who she was. She is led by possible friends who will not disclose their secrets because she has to figure it out for herself. At the end, she probably has the identity she was searching for (I long to tell you who she is and save you the trouble). Then the book is over and you’re supposed to buy the next book. Ummm, no. Nice cover art, though.

Hard to follow. This has possibilities of a good story line but so confusing. The book is hard to follow, feels dragged, a whole bunch of nothing I can’t connect because the main character is in the dark. I hate how it’s only her point of view. I want to like the book but I’m on number 2 and I want to stop.

Frey. Twists and turns on every page. Captivating.

Ok. I thought the book had the potential to be great but nothing was answered in this story at all. I understand “suspense” but too many unanswered questions

Rambles on and on. The main Character Frey is a bad main character. She doesn’t have the curiosity that would allow the reader to gain new insights. She just sits there and lets the story pass her by. If she asks a question and the other characters brush her off or don’t answer it frey retreats into her mind and just RAMBLES. Soooo much rambling paragraphs. It’s literally so *ucking uneeded. The reader literally never gets any of the beginning questions answered. Ike I said a horrible main character. The lack of chapters makes transitions indistinguishable to freys rambling paragraphs. Much of this book is literally PAGES of frey rambling that you can just scroll past before a character talks again. They also never touch on why all of these people come together to back her. She has zero life purpose. Frey just simply exists. Really a terrible waste of your time. It would have been a great story if written by someone else or just written a lot better. The book is littered frequently with grammatical errors as well.

Good read. I didn’t want the story to end I can’t wait to read the next book

Do not torture yourself with this.. If you prefer your main character to have depth, do more than sleep, and the book to have a distinguishable plot, do not read this book. The main character sleeps through most of the book. When she manages to stay awake, she must go on the run for...reasons. When they ride horses, they gallop everywhere for hours on end (horses don’t work that way). After sleeping some more, she, never having held a sword before, practices once with a sword against a master swordsman and not only holds her own but impresses him. Then she sleeps some more. She gathers a ragtag crew who are loyal to her for some reason, although she does nothing to earn it. Then she sleeps some more. She finds out a little about her history. She sleeps some more. Suddenly, she’s queen. The book ends. Yes. It is literally that bad.

Frey. Frey lives with her aunt...not a pleasant time for either of them. She was a young elf who couldn’t do any magic...I actually take that back. She could produce fire. At least she could produce a small flame...enough to light a candle, or light a flame in the fireplace. She loved when she got to go to Junnie’s house which was on the other side of the village, in a tree. She was sent there every day to study and try to learn magic. But usually it was boring reading...but it was away from her own home. Actually her aunt’s home. You see, her mother had died somehow, but no one talked about her. It was so frustrating to not know anything about her. One day she sees a tall, handsome elf male go to Junnie’s house. She tries to sneak in and overhear their conversation to discover who he is. Needless to say she gets caught. They’re elves, remember? And things go downhill from there. Her adventures start when she is called before the Council because she pulled a trick on another young girl from the village. Anyway, she decides to run away, only to be followed by the same elf male, who decides to take her away on a trip through the forest. As they travel, she learns he was sent after her to be her watcher. She just knows he hates her! He treats her rather rudely, and tries to make her practice her magic...what little there is of it! Come along with her on her journies, as she learns more about the elf that she is somehow drawn to, where they are going and some of the missing information about her Mother and Father.

Amazing. Read from cover to cover, Couldn't look away. Couldn't put it down, not even to pee. completely defenseless- mentally, visually, and physically; a slave to each and every turn of page. Addicted before you even open the book to read it's first sentence. 10/10 would recommend

I love it!. This was the best! I couldn’t stop reading!

Loooonnnnnnggggg !. The story itself is way tooooo long! What was it! Apparently a woman born of elf and human blood, jailed by her grandfather, because he wanted power! Only to find out he’d done it to her grandmother and mother as well! The 6 protectors and two wolves attempting to get her to someplace! Being attacked and bound by counselors! She didn’t trust any of them! Didn’t know who she was for 7/8ths of the story!! The plot was too long in forthcoming, I was bored most of the way thru only because it repeated events over and over again, but, changing the backdrop a little every time! Probably a good writer except her characters weren’t very well defined, their actions and feelings were muddled!! Sorry!

Good, left me wanting more. Watching Freya learn who she is as she is battling to keep her life was perfect. Her mind clears and she is remembering things that have been blocked from her. The artistry of the words was great. The scenery was set very well. You can visualize the people around her. The story line has some twists that aren’t expected. Love that! My only complaint was that it was too short. Ready to dive into book 2

Light and ineffrctive. Interesting concept of magic and redemption, told in a disjointed patchwork of romance, dreams, fighting, and a journey (of course) North. The writing is unfortunately weak, and the characters beyond the protagonist are cardboard. I enjoyed the story far more than the book.

Need More!!. I was just looking for a book to read and decided to look under the free books to see if anything sounded good. And boy was I pleasantly surprised that this book was what I was looking for! Something interesting, easy reading and entertaining. I did not want to stop reading! I am excited to see what happens in the next book! I must keep reading!!

Frey. I enjoyed the experience of visualizing Frey's world and I look forward to reading the next part of her story.

It’s very good but needs to be better. Gotten into this book but part of me when I was reading it made me feel like I was somewhat in a stand still.

Harlequin romance plus decent fantasy short story plot in novel length format. Harlequin romance plus decent fantasy short story plot in novel length format.

Frey. couldn’t stop reading this....very captivating..loved it

Frey. Very good read ! I could not but it down ❤️

Ehhh. Too many unnecessary details and not enough details to explain what’s actually happening. Seems to skip scenes.

Frey. Great read

Eeee. Eeee

Frey. I really enjoyed the book. Kept me me coming back for more. Author writings was excellent. I would recommend this book to all fantasy readers. Can’t wait to start the next book in the series.

Frey. Very well written book. Character development took time which was nice. Story line was great and very readable .

Splendid!. Very good book. Can’t wait to buy the others in the series!

AHHHHHHH. THE BOOK WAS AWESOME!!! Super interesting storyline and many unexpected plot twists. Does not have any ‘scenes’ if you get my drift. Recommend this book, and the rest of the series as well!!!!

Frey. Interesting storyline, but it plods along slowly

Entertaining. It was entertaining but some parts were cringe worthy. Especially the internal dialogue of the main character at least for the first half, as well as the exchanges between characters.

Frey's. Great read it in two days.Kept my interest . Yes I loved it and going to reĂĄd another

Great book!. I enjoyed this series. A few mistakes here and there but still worth the read. I really like that these books all stick with the same characters though every book.

Amazing. Absolutely loved the entire series!

Captivating. The ending left me feeling a little lost, but it’s a good book. I would definitely recommend it.

Outstanding Book. It’s difficult to describe how amazing this book is. The end is the best part and is more than worth reading up to that part.

Wonderful to read!. This book kept me in another world it is a real page turner ! Very glad I found it 🙏🏾

That’s it?. That was the ending?

Tumultuous, magical fun. This is a good book. It is well written, the characters are developed and the plot is somewhat deep and a little intriguing, enough to keep you mildly excited to read the next page, and the next book. The main character is a teenage girl that fits many stereotypes of teenage girls in fantasy books (been seen as weak but is super powerful, falls deeply in love with random hot guy she just met, accidentally hurts someone with her power and runs away. Pretty standard), but has enough depth as a character to not be boring. The supporting characters are pretty typecast as well, we have dangerous vodka aunt who acts as caretaker for orphan main, mysterious hot stranger (Two of them!), mother figure mentor, and dangerous and shady government. As is pretty standard for these kind of books, all her trouble starts when she finds her true powers and runs away, and a large scale, world exploring adventure starts from there. While I have many criticisms of the book, it’s very well written, the magic system is well designed and well written, with the exception of the “ancient language” and how they handle spells vs pure magic. This entire setup is almost identical to that found in Christopher Paolini’s “Inheritance Cycle” and the author doesn’t even try to hide that. However, no characters are clearly copied from anything, just stereotypes. For the YA age group, this is an enjoyable read and I respect the author for being able to tap into this much teenage angst, panic, regret and self-doubt to write the character. Overall, good, but not the best, 4/5, read at your own digression.

This book was awesome. I love all the details the Arthur put in to the books. So many feels I had wile reading this book so many that I hope she put in the other books that Frey have a chance to show people that she is not a monster.

Frey. Great book in series. Terrific fantasy.

A Lot of Nothing. This book is the perfect example of what I dislike about first person. Since the narrator knows nothing, neither do we. I wanted to like Frey, but she was alternately timid and angry, two characteristics I have no respect for. And then to suddenly kill when she doesn’t have a clue what is the truth or a lie? I was done with her (although I finished the book). A perfect example of what a first book in a series should be, I urge you to start with book two. Although, I won’t be reading on because there’s nothing here to compel me. The hints at an interesting story world are not enough for me to invest time in money to discover if there is something there or not.

Confused. This book was amazing it started confusing and ended just as confusing but it makes sense. Every page seemed like it only lasted a second

Frey. I made it halfway through this book and was terribly disappointed and couldn’t even continue because the plot was so slow and confusing and boring. It gives only one point of view and the main character just makes assumptions and never asks any questions to those around her, nor does the author give anything further to the reader.

Frey. Really enjoyed, finished to quick. Must get next book.

Brilliant. I couldn't put it down I had to finish it. Now I am looking to get the next one now

Frey. I really enjoyed this, found it as a free download whilst rummaging through I tunes library and have just bought the second. I love the way it has it's own world which is left for the reader to discover rather than explanation being shoe-horned into the reading. Also ones initial suppositions about the books world turn out to be flawed. Am hoping I enjoy book two as much.

The Freya sagas. I have for the first time read any work from Melisa Wright, the first book Freya is brilliant and I can wait to start the next book. Thank you for a most enjoyable read Bambipeaches

Amazing. I often don't write review for books. But this book was so good I couldn't put it down.

Fast paced.. A good fast paced story but hard to read sometimes when the story line gets lost.

Where Humans are the Fairy Tale.... I thoroughly enjoyed this book, with its beginning of a hero's journey. Frey is really bad at Magic, until she accidentally releases herself from the bonds she was placed under.. From there it is adventures with a bunch of ragtag followers who teach her to use the magic, but who refuse to tell her much about anything else.. I will be immediately buying the second book, the writer has done such a good job of setting up the story to continue, while providing a satisfying conclusion to this volume.

Excellent. This story was excellent. It kept me highly entertained until the very end. Can’t wait to read more in this series.

Freya. A lovely YA story. Well written and full of adventure.

Frey. Totally spellbinding.

Awesome. This book was great!! Full of adventure and surprises!! It was cool because it was about elfs :) which is cool. Its a must read!! Recommend for all ages

Loved it!. This was a great easy read.

Disappointing. Wanted to like it but the writing style was a let down.

Disappointing. This was the hardest book to follow. It was confusing and disjointed. I kept hoping that it would eventually come together, but it never happened. It was a miracle that I even finished it.

Boring. I won’t be continuing the series.

Few minor Problems. Read this a few weeks ago and then looked at cover and read it again realising they do not match but to be honest I have around 181 books on my iPad and I keep expanding but this book has always stuck with me for being such a good book. Keep writing what you love...🥰😊😁

Never read it. Idk so yeah btw I'm at school

Targeted towards tweenage girls I suspect. The storyline was a bit slow paced for me but interesting enough to keep me reading to the end. I didn't realize before what other reviewers meant when they say the heroine sleeps a lot - she faints a lot in crucial events to avoid having to explain what has happened and keep the mystery. Also a lot of dream sequences. This gets old after the first few times. As a male who has read a lot of the classic fantasy novels where the plot is basically: farm boy discovers he has magic powers, saves the world and saves the damsel in distress, I thought it would be refreshing to read a fantasy story about a female protagonist, written by a female author. I was disappointed that there wasn't a strong female lead - she spends a lot of time being saved by the male characters and then fainting. But I am probably being too critical, I'm sure the lead will develop into a strong character over the next few books in the series. I think the fault lies with me. I am not the target audience, it will appeal most (from my experience of nil) to young teenage girls.

didnt work. did not work on my ipod touch

Could be a great story. Don't get me wrong this book is a really lovely read but I felt the auto rushed the story and it made me the reader feel slightly detached from the characters. If more detail was out into the story it would have been a lot more enjoyable

Intriguing but. Intriguing storyline but why does the heroine sleep so much?

Another that could have been better. I like the plot but Frey sleeps aaaaa lot 😑 extremely dull in that sense. It was an ok read

Freyda. Good story horrible ending. You get dragged along in this confusing story then the end is rushed for completion. That sucked I feel I was left hanging with out any answers.

beautiful. glorious in a perfectly dark magical way

Could have been good but Mostly a romance. Ugh I just want to read a good fantasy story w a female main character. Why do they always turn into harlequin romances.

Great potential. Poor Execution.. I don't know what it was about this book, but it always felt a little too disconnected. Perhaps the pacing was too fast. Nothing ever really felt like it flowed from moment to moment. Perhaps expanding on each event just a little would have made the difference to me. I enjoy just about everything in this book, characters and setting and lore. But the writing made it a chore to read. I really wanted to love this book, but I was never drawn in well enough to forget the real world.

Excellent read.. Melissa’s narratives take you away with the characters.

Amazing. Loved the entire series! Can't wait for the new book.

Freya- exciting story. I loved this book but the end was confusing.

Oh my Stars.. Lived this book. Can hardly wait for the next one. Highly recommend this book. I had trouble putting the book down. Bravo.....

Frey. Totally captivated me! I bought the next one and plan to buy the rest! Some parts could be written better, but it was easy to ignore. Overall, one of the most addictive stories I've read in awhile!

Hard to follow. I liked the book but found it hard to follow along at times. The book felt like it should have been longer. More development of characters would have been nice. Still a good one!

Missing so many things. If you’re looking for a quick read, this is the book. Suspense wise, the author did a decent job but this seems to be counteracted with the sexuality of the protagonist. Not really sure what her personality was aside from the worst type of rebellious and eavesdropper. The plot was lacking, not really sure what was happening and a lot of that is because of the protagonist’s perspective, which was just all over the place. I feel like the memory issue doesn’t get resolved and this impacts the ending badly. Stereotypes are everywhere. Perhaps this is due to being the author’s initial works that the absence of substance proves to be process work. I haven’t read their recent works so I give this 2 stars instead of one.

Has potential, but nothing actually happens.. Repetitive and full of unnecessary interruptions whenever anything interesting is about to happen to the main character. She knows too little, and doesn’t motivate her own story.
