Up from Slavery: An Autobiography by Booker T. Washington Book Summary

An Apple Books Classic edition.

“I was born a slave…in the midst of the most miserable, desolate, and discouraging surroundings.” Thus begins Booker T. Washington’s account of his incredible journey from a child enslaved on a Virginia plantation to one of the leading speakers and educators of the late 1800s. Washington shares formative experiences. He recalls carrying books to school for his master’s children while wishing he himself could learn and tells the story of how, after his family was emancipated, he walked almost 500 miles to enroll in a new school for Black people. Washington went on to found the famous Tuskegee Institute so that he could help others in his community receive a good education.

Throughout his personal anecdotes, Washington expresses his belief in the importance of education for creating a future free from oppression, particularly for Black people. His autobiography, and the ideas expressed within its pages, continue to spark conversation today, more than 100 years after its publication.

From Slavery to Success. Booker T. Washington proved that anyone can succeed in America with determination to do your best. He feared GOD and in all he did he worked to do his best and GOD honored that. He established relations with both ethnicities and brought healing to a nation despite great obstacles.

Should be Required Reading in Elementary School. This is an eye opening account of a man of great character. We would all do well to follow Booker T. Washington’s prescriptions for society, which are related as the remarkable story of Tuskegee Institute unfolds.

Loved this book. First book read on iphone. Great story of perseverance and perspective on life in the slave days. Focus on balance of skills and knowledge should be taught

Up From Slavery. Timeless. It is about being a productive member of society. It gives insight to the strength of character and discipline required to serve and command respect.

A great book about a great man. Up from slavery is one of the best autobiographies I have ever read! I strongly recommend its reading to everyone who cares for his fellow man

Mrs. It is amazing to me that I have not read this book before, when I was studying the history of this country. It was totally engaging from beginning to end. My admiration for what this great man accomplished and his selflessness in doing so can hardly be overstated. It saddens me that so many of both races have failed to heed his sage advice concering the basic purposes of education as well as the essentials of racial harmony. Would that his spirit and values were still so prominent today!

In Humble Awe. Booker T. Washington's inspiring autobiography of forgiveness, determination and perseverance offers life lessons for one and all. This book should be require reading in our schools and a point of regular study by men and women of all ages. The Tuskegee method of education is just as applicable today as it was during Mr. Washington's lifetime. Considering the state of so many college graduates that have spent tens of thousands of dollars on an education, yet have no readily employable skills; this should be obvious to all. Nevertheless I am not aware of even one institution that teaches a trade, academics and strong moral character.

Review.. Good book. He left a legacy to all.

Worlds most boring book - piece of trash. Had to read this for a history class. Even the teacher said it was boring but we need to read it. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME THIS BOOK IS TRASH I WOULD RATHER READ POEMS ALL DAY THAN HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK AGAIN. This book is trash, do not get. Would give it 0 stars if I could. There is much better ways to use your time. I would rather read through my whole history book because it would be 100 times more interesting than this piece of trash!

A necessary read for all. As we find ourselves in 2018 part of a country divided, it is eye opening to read of the life, struggles, and successes of Booker T. Washington. His message of encouragement, commitment, and hope is so needed today.

Great read. I grateful for reading this book.

Up From Slavery. This Autobiography of Booker T. Washington is absolutely life-changing. This Book should be Required Reading for ALL Students in America. It shapes one's mind as to achievable pursuit of excellence in education, labor and industry. And if you are grown and have not read this book yet, it's never too late to be enlightened, inspired and empowered. BUY THIS BOOK TODAY. Because Our Nation is in CRISIS And UP FROM SLAVERY, is definitely part of the solution!

Growing. Fascinating account of the growth of racial reconciliation in the post-Civil war nation. Solid lessons for those who seek the betterment of humanity and antidotal insight for those who believe difficulty is insurmountable.

Worlds best book. So wise and optimistic book, teaches how to hold persistence

Truly inspiring. Booker T Washington is one the most inspiring individuals I have ever read about. The things I read in this book I will take with me for the rest of my life.

It is beautifully written and moving!. It is beautifully written and moving! The rich stories Mr. Washington describes places your mind in his life alongside his struggles and triumphs so fully that I wept and rejoiced in equal turns. I felt like a friend taken along for the ride or like I was hearing this tale from a beloved grandfather trying to pass down the wisdom of hard worked years and well earned joys. Thank you for the lessons!

Boring. Most boring book ever

BKFinest. Very good read, informative and inspirational.

Up From Slavery. Wow!! The real history of Tuskegee university every school in the US should have this book on their reading list. It is the first time I have ever heard about the wonders of this school. Thank you Dr. Washington.

A valuable read. This book's greatest value is twofold. It gives insight into the struggles of slavery and reformation during and following the Civil War. Secondly it illustrates the teaching of pupils to embrace hard work and self respect, plus teaching all people of the value of supporting such efforts. While the writing style is dated, the message is as true today as it was then. My only criticism is that Mr. Washington spends too much time quoting sources that praise him. However, I am sure the praise is well deserved, and I wish we had more people like him around today.

Up From Slavery - Great Book. Very informative and interesting read. Booker T. Washington’s life and work should be known to all people, the obstacles he overcame and the people he met and worked with, from the common man to U.S. Presidents. Definite must read.

Hero. Never really knew Booker T Washington’s story. I am forever changed by the events of his life and I’m inspired.

An important message for modern black people. The greatest desire for former slaves was for an education and the right to work to own their own property. Today, we claim the right to reparations for suffering that we never had to endure and the right to be supported by those who work. Where did we go wrong, and how can we claim the dignity that former slaves had? Today we welcome a new form of slavery, as well as enslaving those who support us, because it requires less work and effort than true freedom and respectability.

I highly recommend this book!. An amazing story of one man's dedication, perseverance and hard work and unimaginable success - against all odds - in uplifting the black race and thereby inspiring the whole human race to find joy by serving others. This book is so well-written and extremely interesting that it keeps you captivated as you follow Booker T. Washington from slave to great leader of not only the black race, but of the whole human race.

Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington. Although the book was free, there are considerable errors in the last chapter with respect to the figures that Dr. Washington provides regarding the progress of Tuskegee. Please note that I am am also following along with an audio-book which gives other numbers. I would double check this online version with a print version.

My thoughts. This was a very good book, for it took me on a journey of the birth of Tuskegee University. I now know, understand, appreciate the works of that University. It was a delight to see the progressive side of the Negro after the Emancipation Proclamation. I've always was shown the ugly side of the Negro life, but now knowing there was a more progressive side that was very delightful to read. However, Mr. Washington only captured that nice part of the south. He didn't go into much detail of what others or himself may have went through racially. It's hard to believe that the only struggles he faced was being poor, and finding money for the school. So, there is some questionable parts of this book that have me in wonder. However, great very educational book over all!

Up from Slavery. Beautiful delivery of hope

Great lessons for all time. I did not know the complete history of booker T Washington. I found myself looking forward to my morning reading time to learn more about this remarkable individual who, by fulfilling his life’s purpose, as forever impact of thousands both now and in the future. I highly recommend taking the time to read this book and learn from it on a personal level.

Very inspirational!. I thoroughly enjoyed it; learned a lot.

Up From Slavery. Outstanding! This book should be a part of the curriculum in every school in America. No matter the color of one’s skin, or their financial wherewithal. Booker T. Washington led not by mere words, but through the consistency of his entire life, in using his hands, heart and mind. Clearly one of the greatest Americans ever.

WHAT AN INSPIRATIONAL BOOK ! OMG ! :D. THIS IS A MUST HAVE ! TRUELY ! IT’S INEXPLICABLE HOW TO DESCRIBE THIS LITERATURE & THE EXPERIENCE NOT TO MENTION THE BLINDED FAITH OF ONE’S DREAM TO ARISE LITERALLY FROM THE BOTTOM UP ! BUT MORE ADMIRABLE IS THAT NOT ONLY DID ARISE FROM THE BOTTOM UP BUT BROUGHT A WORLD CLASS ALONG WITH HIM! MR. WASHINGTON MAKES ME SO PROUD! I AM FROM DOMINICAN DESCENT BUT THIS FAITH THAT BLINDED HIM TO SUCCESS MAKES ME PROUD AS AN EDUCATOR OF CHILDREN, AS A COLLEGE STUDENT AND AS A HUMAN BEING TO CARE SO MUCH FOR ONE’S RACE AMONG OTHER AND COMING TOGETHER FOR THE SAME CAUSE: TO ARISE ! :D IT’S A MUST READ FOR THE AUDIENCE TO BELIEVE MY PERSPECTIVE ! TRUELY INSPIRATIONAL !

Up from slavery review. Great book. Inspirational and motivational.

Up from slavery. BTW's philosophy of education and beliefs about racial unity are important to today's America. We should all read and discuss this book.

Nice read!. The heartwarming adventures of a black boy of the south becoming an educated man and teaching his race how the love of labor and education could lift his race to a new station in life. In this way, he taught the white race that that the black man was more than a slave and a servant. And so slowly the black man of the south was assimilating into the white culture. The south would never be the same!

Up From Slavery, an Autobiography. Wonderful read! The many pithy sayings and the powerful resolution to do right for all humans shine through this tale of possibility and personal success at the expense of no one but himself. Booker T. Washington's story ought to be part of every American history book and taught taught to all our young people yet to experience life in the trenches.

Review of Up From Slavery. Very uplifting memoir of a great pioneer . Many of the principles of his era are very much relevant today . Slavery is still very prevalent today, especially in the mind . I first read this book as a teenager . It greatly assisted me then as it does now 40+ years later .

Booker T Washington. Book should be required reading in our schools.

Very Good Historical Read. I had not read about the life of Booker T. Washington before. He lead a very impressive life during a period in our history that deserved his forward thinking, stamina and dedication to the cause of racism in our Country. This autobiography has left me with a heartwarming feeling knowing in his time, post-slavery era, that there were people, both white and black, willing to help with the education and self-supporting work opportunities for those who were so neglected in these areas in the past. I think this book, in my opinion, with its historical significance should be read by all.

Enlightening. For a west coast northerner, this was a wonderful experience. It truly helps me understand the culture of the south in which I now live. Some of my best friends are black people and I have a greater respect for them, even though I respected them before. Thank you IBooks for a great read!

Time-Capturing and Phenomenal. Booker T. Washington's autobiography was a phenomenal and well written piece of literature. I hope to be able to read some of Washington's other works in hopes of getting a better view of the South.

Amazing. Amazing!!!!!

From Aboriginal Australia. Conciliation at its best. If only Australia could learn from this history of how to free slaves.

Good. Apparently

Up from slavery. Booker T Washington is now one of my favourite people. Great book. He is one of the noble and best people who have walked this earth.

Up From Slavery. Excellent read! Always upbeat, optimistic, and yet loaded with common sense, Mr. Washington's approach to the often difficult issues of racial interaction are both refreshing and timeless. A fascinating peek into the past.

Great book!. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this autobiography. It's a hopeful story of one man'a rise out of slavery and on to greatness. I highly recommend it!

Up from slavery. A great read! An exceptional individual! As I write this, George Zimmerman is acquitted of the murder of Trayvon Martin. Racism is still very much a part of society. Washington showed a great deal of optimism, wrote with a great deal of deference but I think would be disappointed with the status of the "races".
